RESUMO

The majority of mortalities after car accidents are due to head injuries. These are followed by injuries to the thorax, abdomen, and extremities. Correctly used seat belts may prevent up to 70% of the head injuries and decrease the effects of other injuries as well. At least half of those who are killed in car accidents would be alive today if they had worn a seat belt.

RESUMO

The cases of seven patients with different lesions of the base of the skull and the orbits are demonstrated, where CT was performed in horizontal and coronal sections. The results make obvious that only the combination of both planes can provide optimal information in these cases. The existence of a basal or orbital lesion, its size and location, and whether or not it penetrates through the base of the skull, can easily be detected. This is of great help in determining the therapy of choice, i.e. operability or radiation therapy treatment planning.

RESUMO

Although multicentric glioblastomas are relatively rare, their occurrence is not an extreme rarity. A multicentric lesion should always be thought of when the symptoms cannot be related to a single focus and when the special investigations do not confirm a single lesion. In our opinion the brain scintigram and the computer tomogram offer the best diagnostic possibilities at present. If the preoperative diagnosis has been made, then an indication for operation can be justified only if multiple tumours can be removed through one approach and, what is even more important, at one sitting. The cases demonstrated prove that this procedure can be successful. If, on the other hand, only one of several tumours is excised, then a fatal outcome is almost certain.
