New medical standards for Virginia's high school athletes.

Virginia physicians administering preparticipation physicals to high school athletes this fall are using the new, expanded examination form that appears in this issue. Representing multidisciplinary input and incorporating current sports medicine information, the form is designed to identify the student at high risk for injury and to evaluate for a specific sport. After a two-year pilot program conducted by the authors the new form was officially adopted by the Virginia High School League.

Reconstruction after the Tikhoff-Linberg procedure.

The Tinhoff-Linberg operation is a limb salvage technique that permits intercapulothoracic resection of malignant neoplasms of the shoulder with preservation of neuromuscular function of the upper extremity. A metallic interpositional device can be used to fix the humerus to the second rib, thus increasing stability and function. This device was used in a patient with a proximal humeral osteosarcoma who was also treated with radiation and chemotherapy and who has reasonably good extremity functional and is free of tumor at one year postoperatively.

Lacrosse Injuries.

Lacrosse injuries are fewer and less severe than expected considering that sticks are used, checking is permitted, and protective gear is sparse.
