RESUMO
Nineteen men who had been exposed to asbestos for long periods were subjected to an examination of the lungs by means of computerised axial tomography (CT). Some features of asbestos-related disease are shown better on CT than on conventional roentgenograms, and occasionally features not shown at all on conventional films may be demonstrated on CT. It was concluded that CT may be useful in cases with borderline and doubtful signs on conventional films, and very occasionally in persons with long exposure who have normal conventional films.

Early changes in reflux oesophagitis are difficult to assess on radiological criteria (Torrance, 1973). The later manifestations, particularly with stricture formation, are best assessed by barium swallow. Apart from stricture formation, marked reflux oesophagitis with coarsened folds may lead to a mistaken diagnosis of varices or carcinoma. The various radiological appearances that have been encountered are described.

Three cases of established reflux oesophagitis resembling varices are presented. Although the condition is rare, the importance of distinguishing oesophagitis from varices is pointed out in order to avoid unnecessary arteriography and surgery.
