RESUMO

Foams are commonly used as sound absorbers and thermal insulators for many industrial and construction applications. The insulating materials market is currently dominated by inorganic fibres like glass and mineral wool, as well as plastic foams. However, worldwide plastics consumption produces huge amounts of waste, generating concerns about soil, air and especially seawater pollution. Hence, new methods for recycling marine microplastic litter according to cleaner production criteria are being sought. This paper presents a novel, sustainable and eco-friendly foamy material made of microplastic waste, namely polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polystyrene (PS), incorporated into a bio-based matrix. Samples with different compositions were prepared and then characterized for sound absorption properties. Evidence is presented of very good acoustic performances and of how the acoustic characteristics of the end product can be customized using different microplastic content and type. This allows envisioning many industrial and civil applications for this novel open-cell material.

A multi-instrumental approach combining highly sensitive Synchrotron Radiation-based techniques was used to provide information on the real composition of a dry black ink powder found in a bronze inkwell of the first century AD. The presence of Pb, Cu and Fe in the powder, revealed by XRF and ICP-OES data, leads to raise several hypotheses on their origin. The inkpot and its lid were also investigated by Hand-Held XRF, revealing a bronze alloy (Cu-Sn) with a certain amount of Fe and Pb. The lid was found to be particularly enriched in lead. XRPD, XAS and FTIR measurements showed a substantial presence of silicates and common clay minerals in the ink along with cerussite and malachite, Pb and Cu bearing-carbonates, respectively. These evidences support the hypothesis of an important contamination of the ink sample by the burial environment (soil) and the presence of degradation products of the bronze inkpot. The combined use of IR, Raman, and GC-MS evidenced that the black ink is mainly composed of amorphous carbon deriving from the combustion of organic material mixed with a natural binding agent, Arabic gum.

Marine litter affects various habitats across the world. This review focuses on the Adriatic region, considering the presence of marine litter as well as microplastics (mPs) and macroplastics (MPs) in different environments (water, beach, seabed and biota). Data from 53 scientific papers were critically analysed, providing a snapshot of this type of contamination, and evidencing critical issues. The final part of the review provides considerations on spatial and temporal trends, comparing data with the available information provided by transport forecasting models. It emerges that the most investigated areas are those most subjected to the contribution of rivers, tourism or have the greatest relevance to nature conservation. Our analysis also reveals that, even though many international research projects have played a fundamental role in the creation of shared methods and protocols, currently available data are difficult to compare. Nevertheless, our results enhance knowledge of the state of the art in the research carried out so far, and on the situation regarding pollution due to the marine litter in the Adriatic Sea, as well as highlighting avenues for future investigation.

The problem of microplastic pollution is now the order of the day in front of everyone's eyes affecting the environment and the health of leaving creature. This work aims to retrace the history of microplastics in a critical way through a substantial bibliographic collection, defining the points still unresolved and those that can be resolved. Presence of marine litter in different environments is reviewed on a global scale, focusing in particular on micro and macro plastics definition, classification and characterization techniques.

While the addition of zinc ions to bioactive ceramics has been shown to enhance the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of osteoblast-like cells, contradictory results have been found. Therefore, the effect of zinc-releasing ceramics on cell proliferation and differentiation into osteogenic lineages requires further clarification. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of zinc addition on the degradation profile of three-dimensional bioactive glass scaffold, and on the proliferation and osteogenesis of human adipose stem cells (hASCs) in these scaffolds. Bioactive glass scaffolds containing Na(2)O, K(2)O, MgO, CaO, B(2)O(3), TiO(2), P(2)O(5) and SiO(2) were prepared. The degradation was evaluated by weight loss measurement, scanning electron microscopy and elemental analysis. The degradation profile of bioactive glass was shown to slow down with the addition of zinc. Qualitative live/dead staining showed that zinc addition to bioactive glass inhibits cell spreading and proliferation of hASCs. However, zinc addition had no significant effect on DNA content, alkaline phosphatase activity and osteopontin concentration of hASCs when measured quantitatively. Our results suggest that the possible stimulatory effect of addition of zinc on hASC proliferation and osteogenesis was not detected because addition of zinc slowed down the degradation rate of the studied bioactive glass scaffolds.

Bioactive glass composed of Na2O-K2O-MgO-CaO-B2O3-P2O5-SiO2 is used in this study to manufacture three-dimensional glass fibre scaffolds for a synthetic bone filler material for the treatment of bone defects. The glass is characterized by a large working range, which is the temperature interval at which forming of glass can take place. A preliminary in vivo study on New Zealand skeletally mature rabbit's tibia is reported here. Bone defects were prepared in the medial surfaces of the diaphyses of the tibia. For the first time melt derived three-dimensional bioactive glass fibre constructs were used to fill the cavities. The different implants investigated here were a scaffold with a porosity of 45-50%, scaffold with a porosity of 55-60% and morsels with a porosity of 55-60%. The implanted bone substitutes were dissected after 6 months and evaluated by histological and synchrotron radiation micro tomography analysis. PerioGlas and empty defects were used as positive and negative controls, respectively. The result was that the surgically created tibial defects were healed and new bone formation was found in the medullary cavities. Despite the intrinsic limitations of a pilot study, the preliminary results indicate that in 6 months the glass fibre scaffolds are completely resorbed and that the osteoconductive properties of the filling material are strictly correlated with the structural and morphological characteristics of the bone substitute.
