RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: There is growing recognition in the ranks of the South African government that violence against women is a serious problem facing us all. Until now data on the epidemiology of violence against women in South Africa have been scanty. This report presents the findings of the first major community-based prevalence study. OBJECTIVES: To describe the prevalence of physical, sexual, financial, and emotional abuse of women. METHODS: A cross-sectional study conducted in the Eastern Cape (EC), Mpumalanga (MP) and the Northern Province (NP). The sample included one randomly selected woman aged 18-49 years living in each of 2,232 households. The sample was drawn using stratified, multistage, random methods, and 1,306 questionnaires were completed, giving a 90.3% response rate after adjusting for households without an eligible woman. RESULTS: The prevalences of ever having been physically abused by a current or ex-partner were 26.8% (EC), 28.4% (MP) and 19.1% (NP). The prevalences of abuse in the last year were 10.9% (EC), 11.9% (MP) and 4.5% (NP). The prevalences of rape were 4.5% (EC), 7.2% (MP) and 4.8% (NP). Considerable emotional and financial abuse was also reported, e.g. the prevalences of a partner having boasted about or brought home girlfriends in the previous year were 5.0% (EC), 10.4% (MP) and 7.0% (NP): The prevalences of physical abuse during a pregnancy were 9.1% (EC), 6.7% (MP) and 4.7% (NP). The proportions of abused women who were injured in the year before the survey were 34.5% (EC), 48.0% (MP) and 60.0% (NP). CONCLUSIONS: This study is the first large-scale, community-based prevalence study to be undertaken in South Africa.

RESUMO

Transterm facilitates studies of messenger RNAs and translational control signals. Each messenger RNA (mRNA) from GenBank is extracted and broken into its functional components, its coding sequence, initiation context, termination context, flanking sequence representing its 5' UTR (untranslated region), 3' UTR and translational signals. In addition, numerical parameters characterising each coding region in Transterm, including codon and GC bias, are available. For each species in Transterm, the initiation and termination regions are aligned by their start or stop codons and presented as base frequency matrices and tables of the information content of the bases in the alignments. Users can obtain summaries of characteristics of the mRNAs for species of their choice and search for translational signals both in the Transterm database and in their own sequence. The current release contains data from over 10 000 species, including the complete genomes of 20 prokaryotes and three eukaryotes. Both flat-file and relational database forms of Transterm are accessible via the WWW at http://biochem.otago.ac.nz/Transterm/

RESUMO

Hypopharyngeal perforations are usually seen as a complication of endotracheal intubation by less experienced physicians in emergency situations. The site most commonly perforated is the pharynx, posterior to the cricopharyngeal muscle; the second most common site is the pyriform sinus. We report here an unusual cause of hypopharyngeal perforation from a swallowed plastic fork in a psychiatric patient.

RESUMO

We have developed a monoclonal antibody, anti-1F7, that inhibits soluble Ag-driven T cell proliferation as well as PWM-driven IgG synthesis. Anti-1F7 antibody reacts with approximately 57% of unfractionated T cells, 62% of CD4+ cells, and 54% of CD8+ cells. Although the 1F7 Ag is widely distributed among lymphoid cells, this Ag on CD4+ cells is preferentially expressed on the CDw29(4B4+) helper population. Moreover, anti-1F7 antibody further subdivides the CD4+CDw29+ cell subset into CDw29+1F7+ and CDw29+1F7- populations. The CD4+CDw29+1F7+ population of cells maximally proliferates to recall Ag such as tetanus toxoid, whereas helper function for PWM-driven IgG synthesis by B cells belongs to both the CD4+CDw29+1F7+ and CD4+CDw29+1F7- population of cells. The most prominent structure defined by this antibody is a 110-kDa molecule that is different from the 135-kDa, 160-kDa, and 185-kDa glycoproteins identified by anti-CDw29 antibody and the 180-kDa glycoprotein identified by UCHL-1 antibody. It is, however, related to the molecule recognized by anti-Ta1, an activation Ag on T cells. Furthermore, although the Ta1 molecule is recognized by anti-1F7 mAb, the 1F7 family of structures also includes molecules distinct from Ta1.

RESUMO

Five cell lines that express one of five isoforms of the human leukocyte common Ag (CD45) were established by transfecting a murine pre-B cell line with leukocyte common Ag cDNA constructs. Using these cell lines, the specificities of CD45 and CD45R mAb were examined. Of the 43 mAb tested, 25 antibodies recognized sequences common to all five isoforms, 16 antibodies recognized isoforms that include exon A encoded sequences, one antibody recognized isoforms that include exon B encoded sequences, and one antibody recognized only the isoform that does not include either exon A, B, or C encoded sequences.
