RESUMO

Much attention regarding the environmental pollution by plastics had focused on the Oceans. More recently, contamination of freshwater ecosystems has been addressed but information from smaller rivers in moderately populated catchments is still comparatively scarce. This study explored the microplastic (MP) occurrence in the small regional river Oker, Northern Germany (catchment area 1822 km2, population of ca. 500,000, discharge approx. 12 m3 s-1). MPs (fibers and fragments in the size range 0.3-5 mm, identification by microscopy) were found in all 10 in-stream samples collected along the course of the river, ranging between 28 and 134 particles m-3 with an overall average of 63 particles m-3. This MP concentration found in the small river Oker is similar to, or higher than, that reported for larger rivers in similar environments in Central Europe. On average, higher MP concentration was found at urban (71 particles m-3) compared to rural sampling sites (51 particles m-3). Within the Oker catchment, in-stream MP concentration showed no or low correlation to the catchment-scale factors of catchment size and population. Additional samples taken from three locations directly influenced by discharges of potential MP point sources confirmed wastewater treatment plants of different capacities and an urban rainwater sewer as sources. Our results support findings that MP concentrations in small rivers are crucially influenced by local sources, superimposing linear relationships to factors of catchment size and -population. They show that even small rivers draining moderately populated catchments may exhibit comparatively high concentrations of MPs, and thereby represent underestimated pathways of MP in the environment.

We contribute transcriptomic data for two species of Ostracoda, an early-diverged group of small-sized pancrustaceans. Data include new reference transcriptomes for two asexual non-marine species (Dolerocypris sinensis and Heterocypris aff. salina), as well as single-specimen transcriptomic data that served to analyse gene expression across four developmental stages in D. sinensis. Data are evaluated by computing gene expression profiles of the different developmental stages which consistently placed eggs and small larvae (at the stage of instar A-8) similar to each other, and apart from adults which were distinct from all other developmental stages but closest to large larvae (instar A-4). We further evaluated the transcriptomic data with two newly sequenced low-coverage genomes of the target species. The new data thus document the feasibility of obtaining reliable transcriptomic data from single specimens - even eggs - of these small metazoans.

Sediment cores obtained from 11 tropical and subtropical American lakes revealed that local human activities significantly increased mercury (Hg) inputs and pollution levels. Remote lakes also have been contaminated by anthropogenic Hg through atmospheric depositions. Long-term sediment-core profiles revealed an approximately 3-fold increase in Hg fluxes to sediments from c. 1850 to 2000. Generalized additive models indicate that c. 3-fold increases in Hg fluxes also occurred since 2000 in the remote sites, while Hg emissions from anthropogenic sources have remained relatively stable. The tropical and subtropical Americas are vulnerable to extreme weather events. Air temperatures in this region have shown a marked increase since the 1990s, and extreme weather events arising from climate change have increased. When comparing Hg fluxes to recent (1950-2016) climatic changes, results show marked increases in Hg fluxes to sediments during dry periods. The Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) time series indicate a tendency toward more extreme drier conditions across the study region since the mid-1990s, suggesting that instabilities in catchment surfaces caused by climate change are responsible for the elevated Hg flux rates. Drier conditions since c. 2000 appear to be promoting Hg fluxes from catchments to lakes, a process that will likely be exacerbated under future climate-change scenarios.

Geometric morphometric methods are powerful tools to discriminate between closely related ostracods taxa as well as to study the relationship between their morphological variations, taxonomy and paleoecology. In this study, valve outline analysis allows the discrimination between the non-marine ostracod C. silvestrii and R. whatleyi juveniles, pointing out differences in the posterior valve area and surface ornamentation. Modern female specimens of C. silvestrii from 23 sites located in a spatial transect (41 to 51 °S) exhibited extensive morphological variability, on the basis of which three morphotypes (acuminated, transitional, subtruncated) were determined. Multivariate analyses showed that acuminated and transitional shapes are not arranged in groups but the subtruncated morphotype, previously described as E. cecryphalium, seems to be associated with low water conductivity (372 µS cm-1), dominant cold (5 ºC) and windy (8.6 m s-1) climatic conditions. The fossil cluster which included nine cores spanning the last 15.6 kyr, only covered acuminated and transitional shapes, which may indicate that these lineages might be older than the subtruncated morphotype. In addition, morphological differences between reproduction modes suggested that parthenogenetic females exhibit de posterior margin more acuminate than sexual females. These results set the ground for more precise ecological and paleoenvironmental studies in Patagonia.

While there is substantial evidence for art and symbolic behaviour in early Homo sapiens across Africa and Eurasia, similar evidence connected to Neanderthals is sparse and often contested in scientific debates. Each new discovery is thus crucial for our understanding of Neanderthals' cognitive capacity. Here we report on the discovery of an at least 51,000-year-old engraved giant deer phalanx found at the former cave entrance of Einhornhöhle, northern Germany. The find comes from an apparent Middle Palaeolithic context that is linked to Neanderthals. The engraved bone demonstrates that conceptual imagination, as a prerequisite to compose individual lines into a coherent design, was present in Neanderthals. Therefore, Neanderthal's awareness of symbolic meaning is very likely. Our findings show that Neanderthals were capable of creating symbolic expressions before H. sapiens arrived in Central Europe.

Understanding Earth's response to climate forcing in the geological past is essential to reliably predict future climate change. The reconstruction of continental climates, however, is hampered by the scarcity of universally applicable temperature proxies. Here, we show that heterocyte glycolipids (HGs) of diazotrophic heterocytous cyanobacteria occur ubiquitously in equatorial East African lakes as well as polar to tropical freshwater environments. The relative abundance of HG26 diols and keto-ols, quantified by the heterocyte diol index (HDI26), is significantly correlated with surface water temperature (SWT). The first application of the HDI26 to a ~37,000 year-long sediment record from Lake Tanganyika provides evidence for a ~4.1 °C warming in tropical East Africa from the last glacial to the beginning of the industrial period. Given the worldwide distribution of HGs in lake sediments, the HDI26 may allow reconstructing SWT variations in polar to tropical freshwater environments and thereby quantifying past continental climate change.

In order to characterize Patagonian (Argentina) ecoregions using non-marine ostracods, their associations in 69 environments were assessed. Twenty eight taxa were recorded, including 12 endemic of the Neotropical region. Our results indicate that Patagonian ostracods are mainly influenced by electrical conductivity (EC), altitude, pH, and temperature; and shows a correlation with Argentinian ecoregions. Assemblage I is composed of sites located at high altitude in the Andean Patagonian forest ecoregion. Host waters have low temperature, EC and pH, and support as representative species Cypris pubera, Eucypris virens, Bradleystrandesia fuscata, Tonacypris lutaria and Amphicypris nobilis. Assemblage II, related to mid-altitude environments in the Patagonian Steppe ecoregion, thrived in waters with moderate to high EC, and alkaline pH values. Dominant species includes Limnocythere rionegroensis, L. patagonica, E. virgata, Riocypris whatleyi, Riocypris sarsi, Newnhamia patagonica, Kapcypridopsis megapodus, Ilyocypris ramirezi and Penthesinelula incae. Assemblage III inhabited environments within Monte and Espinal ecoregions, situated in the eastern part of the study area at low altitude, EC moderate and temperate waters, supporting Heterocypris hyalinus, Amphicypris argentinensis, Sarscypridopsis aculeata, Cypridopsis vidua, Herpetocypris intermedia and Chlamidotheca incisa. Our results indicates that Argentinian Patagonia hosts a diverse ostracod fauna and highlights their capacity as proxies in ecological and palaeoenvironmental studies.

In order to assess the impact of recent industrialization and land-use changes in the Can Gio Mangrove Forest, a Biosphere Reserve in Southern Vietnam, we analyzed heavy metal (HM), total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) concentrations in a 210Pb-dated sediment core, allowing for the environmental reconstruction of the last three decades. C/N ratios were very high (>20) until ~1990, reflecting highly refractory organic matter. Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQG's) violations were observed particularly after the establishment of industries in the area in the late-1990s. Chromium (Cr) and copper (Cu) exceeded the threshold effect levels (TEL); whereas nickel (Ni) was above the probable effects level (PEL), identifying the risk of potential adverse biological effects. Moderate contamination, mainly from cobalt (Co) and lead (Pb), was detected by the contamination factor (CF) index, with Pb levels likely originating from mainly anthropogenic sources, particularly after ~1992, as indicated by elevated enrichment factor (EF) values. A high positive correlation was found between Pb, Cr, Cu and Ni (r ≥ 0.8), while Co, cadmium (Cd) and TOC were highly positive correlated (r = 0.9). We identified evidence of point sources, atmospheric pollution and erosion as the main contributors to enhanced HM levels. However, negative values of the Geo-accumulation index (I-geo) indicated uncontaminated sediments. This discrepancy in pollution indices was likely due to the use of shale averages instead of regional levels as background values, as well as the influence of multiple stressors.

High mountain ranges such as the Tibetan Plateau with an average altitude above 4500 m are topographically complex formations. Elevational gradients, physiographic diversity and climatic heterogeneity have led to highly biodiverse ecosystems in these regions. Mountain ranges can be seen as cradles of evolution and harbour, due to their unique characteristics, a high number of highly adapted species. At the same time these areas are hard to access and therefore taxonomic information is limited. Here we describe a new Acricotopus (Diptera: Chironomidae: Orthocladiinae) larval morphotype occurring in lakes and ponds of differing salinity and water depths located on the Southern and Central Tibetan Plateau. The description is based on larvae and their genetics (ribosomal 18S, 28S and mitochondrial COI sequences) collected from a shallow pond in close proximity to the large saline lake Selin Co. Larvae of Acricotopus indet. morphotype incurvatus are characterized by a mentum with a cluster of lateral teeth, partially folded inwards, a mandible with a toothed lobe in addition to four inner teeth and a sclerotized plate positioned behind the mentum. Up to now, these morphological features have only been found in early instars of other Acricotopus species. The proposed morphotype name is inspired by the peculiar form of the mentum.

Detailed knowledge of species ecological preferences and robust taxonomy of paleobioindicators are prerequisites for accurate paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental studies. This study aims to expand the knowledge of modern, Neotropical freshwater ostracode fauna, across an altitudinal gradient from the karst lakes in the lowlands of El Petén, Guatemala (100-500 m.a.s.l.), to the mid-elevation lakes of the Lacandón forest (500-1 000 m.a.s.l.), to the higher-altitude lakes of Montebello, Chiapas, Mexico (1 000-1 500 m.a.s.l.). Eighteen ostracode species were identified in 24 lakes. Ostracodes were absent in Lakes Amarillo and Lacandón (mid-altitude), and San Diego (lowlands); probably explained by a structural difference of habitats and species interactions. Statistical analysis indicated that the most abundant species, Cypridopsis vidua (O.F. Müller, 1776), Cytheridella ilosvayi (Daday, 1905), Pseudocandona antillana (Broodbakker, 1983), and Darwinula stevensoni (Brady & Robertson, 1870) have a continuous distribution along the entire altitudinal gradient. Some species display more restricted distributions, determined by temperature, precipitation and conductivity. For example, Eucypris sp. is restricted to the lowlands, Vestalenula sp. and Cypria sp. were found only at middle elevations. Species diversity is slightly greater in lakes at middle altitudes (Haverage = 1.09) than in water bodies in the lowlands (Haverage = 0.94) and in cooler lakes in the highlands (Haverage = 0.94), suggesting that mid-elevation lakes have a high potential for harboring microrefugia. Locally weighted scatterplot smoothing (LOESS regressions) provided ecological preference information for the four most frequent and widely distributed species, with respect to temperature, conductivity, bicarbonate (HCO3 -) concentration, precipitation, and pH. Darwinula stevensoni suggest an association more to cooler temperatures and lower conductivities proving its high tolerance range. Cypridopsis vidua is associated with warm and low-rainfall environments, such as recorded in the lowlands of Guatemala, and can be used as a paleobioindicator of vegetated littoral zones, because we found it always associated to this section of lakes. Cytheridella ilosvayi show preferences for warm and humid conditions, whereas P. antillana prefer colder and humid environments. Such quantitative-ecological information will improve ostracode-based paleoenvironmental reconstructions in Southern Mexico and Northern Guatemala. In addition, our approach serves as a model for future paleoecological studies that employ other aquatic bioindicators, such as testate amoebae, cladocerans, and chironomids.


Los ostrácodos son microcrustáceos acuáticos, que poseen un caparazón bivalvo de carbonato de calcio que se puede preservar en los sedimentos de los ambientes lacustres. Debido a su alta sensibilidad a cambios ambientales y su alta potencialidad de fosilización, los ostrácodos son una herramienta útil para el estudio paleoclimático y paleoambiental, abarcando una temporalidad de décadas hasta millones de años. El conocimiento ecológico de las especies, así como su taxonomía son prerrequisitos para estos estudios. Sin embargo, esta información es aún escasa en diferentes regiones del mundo, incluyendo los Neotrópicos. Hasta el momento, se han realizado únicamente estudios en los lagos kársticos de las tierras bajas de la Península de Yucatán, en el norte del Neotrópico. Sin embargo, los lagos en altitudes medias y altas permanecen poco conocidos. El objetivo de este trabajo es aportar conocimiento de ostrácodos no-marinos neotropicales a lo largo de un gradiente altitudinal que va desde las tierras bajas de El Petén, Guatemala (100-500 m s.n.m.), incluyendo los lagos de tierras medias de la Selva Lacandona (500-1 000 m s.n.m.), hasta las tierras altas de Montebello, Chiapas, México (1 000-1 500 m s.n.m.). Dieciocho especies de ostrácodos se identificaron en 24 lagos, pero estuvieron ausentes en los lagos Amarillo y Lacandón (tierras medias) y San Diego (tierras bajas). La ausencia de ostrácodos podría explicarse por la falta de un muestreo estacional o por variables que no se consideraron en este estudio como sustrato, cobertura vegetal acuática e interacciones interespecíficas. Los análisis estadísticos indicaron que las especies más abundantes son: Cypridopsis vidua (O.F. Müller, 1776), Cytheridella ilosvayi (Daday, 1905), Pseudocandona antillana (Broodbakker, 1983) y Darwinula stevensoni (Brady & Robertson, 1870), con una distribución continua a lo largo del gradiente altitudinal. Algunas especies presentan una distribución más restringida, determinada por la temperatura, precipitación y conductividad. Por ejemplo, Eucypris sp. está restringida a las tierras bajas; mientras que Vestalenula sp. y Cypria sp. se encontraron únicamente en elevaciones medias. La diversidad de especies es ligeramente mayor en lagos cálidos a altitudes medias (Haverage = 1.09) que en las tierras bajas (Haverage = 0.94) y que en lagos de agua más fría en las tierras altas (Haverage = 0.94), sugiriendo que los lagos de tierras medias tienen un alto potencial para albergar micro-refugios. Las regresiones LOESS muestran las preferencias ecológicas de las cuatro especies más frecuentes y altamente distribuidas con respecto a la temperatura, conductividad, HCO3 -, precipitación y pH. Darwinula stevensoni se asocia a temperaturas frías y conductividades bajas, lo que evidencia su alto rango de tolerancia. Cypridopsis vidua se asocia con ambientes cálidos y de baja precipitación, como los registrados en las tierras bajas de Guatemala, y puede usarse como paleobioindicador de zonas de vegetación litoral. Cytheridella ilosvayi es un indicador de condiciones cálidas y húmedas, mientras que P. antillana de frías y húmedas. Esta información ecológica-cuantitativa se podrá utilizar como una herramienta para las reconstrucciones paleoambientales basadas en ostrácodos en el sur de México y norte de Guatemala. Además, este enfoque sirve como modelo para futuros estudios paleoecológicos que emplean otros bioindicadores acuáticos, como las amebas testadas, los cladóceros y los quironómidos.

Paleoecological assessment is challenging in highly dynamic environments such as estuaries, where sedimentation of material derived from the catchment interferes with marine processes. In this study we analyzed sedimentary heavy metal contents of the last decades to assess the impact of recent industrialization and changes in land use of the Thi Vai Estuary in Southern Vietnam. Two sediment cores (upstream and downstream) were dated using 210Pb, allowing the environmental reconstruction of the last three decades. Considering the recent and fast economic growth of this region these results are suitable for the evaluation of anthropogenic impacts. Mean sedimentation rates (9.2 cm yr-1 upstream, 4.7 cm yr-1 downstream) indicate high land erosion likely due to deforestation and dumping of dredged material. Sediment quality guidelines (SQG's) showed that Cr and Cu levels exceed threshold values (TEL) in both cores. Upstream Ni is above the probable effect level (PEL) suggesting risk of potential adverse biological effects. Geo-accumulation (I-geo), enrichment factor (EF) and contamination factor (CF) indices were calculated based on geogenic background values. Most indices show only moderate contamination for different elements, particularly by Cr and Pb. However, considering the historical land use impacts (such as discharge of untreated wastewater, intense agricultural practices, tanning operations, etc.), pollutant concentrations are lower than expected, presumably due to dilution by high sedimentation rates and tidal hydrodynamics. Nonetheless, heavy metal indices and SQG's indicate the ecological condition in the area is of concern, particularly upstream as corroborated by high metal fluxes, highlighting severe impacts in the region.

Lake ecosystems are sensitive recorders of environmental changes that provide continuous archives at annual to decadal resolution over thousands of years. The systematic investigation of land use changes and emission of pollutants archived in Holocene lake sediments as well as the reconstruction of contamination, background conditions, and sensitivity of lake systems offer an ideal opportunity to study environmental dynamics and consequences of anthropogenic impact that increasingly pose risks to human well-being. This paper discusses the use of sediment and other lines of evidence in providing a record of historical and current contamination in lake ecosystems. We present a novel approach to investigate impacts from human activities using chemical-analytical, bioanalytical, ecological, paleolimnological, paleoecotoxicological, archeological as well as modeling techniques. This multi-time slice weight-of-evidence (WOE) approach will generate knowledge on conditions prior to anthropogenic influence and provide knowledge to (i) create a better understanding of the effects of anthropogenic disturbances on biodiversity, (ii) assess water quality by using quantitative data on historical pollution and persistence of pollutants archived over thousands of years in sediments, and (iii) define environmental threshold values using modeling methods. This technique may be applied in order to gain insights into reference conditions of surface and ground waters in catchments with a long history of land use and human impact, which is still a major need that is currently not yet addressed within the context of the European Water Framework Directive.

Enrichment of heavy metals was assessed in the Thi Vai Estuary and in the Can Gio Mangrove Forest (SE, Vietnam). Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn contents in water and in sediments were measured. Total organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and C/N ratios were determined. Cu and Cr values were higher than threshold effect level of toxicity, while Ni exceeded probable effect level, indicating the risk of probable toxicity effects. Enrichment factors (EF), contamination factor (CF) and Geo-accumulation index (I-geo) were determined. CF reveals moderate to considerable pollution with Cr and Ni. EF suggests anthropogenic sources of Cr, Cu and Ni. I-geo indicates low contamination with Co, Cu and Zn and moderate contamination with Cr and Ni. Overall metal contents were lower than expected for this highly industrialized region, probably due to dilution, suggesting that erosion rates and hydrodynamics may also play a role in metal contents distribution.

The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is primarily influenced by the northern hemispheric middle latitude Westerlies and the Indian summer monsoon (ISM). The extent, long-distance effects and potential long-term changes of these two atmospheric circulations are not yet fully understood. Here, we analyse modern airborne pollen in a transition zone of seasonally alternating dominance of the Westerlies and the ISM to develop a pollen discrimination index (PDI) that allows us to distinguish between the intensities of the two circulation systems. This index is applied to interpret a continuous lacustrine sedimentary record from Lake Nam Co covering the past 24 cal kyr BP to investigate long-term variations in the atmospheric circulation systems. Climatic variations on the central TP widely correspond to those of the North Atlantic (NA) realm, but are controlled through different mechanisms resulting from the changing climatic conditions since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). During the LGM, until 16.5 cal kyr BP, the TP was dominated by the Westerlies. After 16.5 cal kyr BP, the climatic conditions were mainly controlled by the ISM. Chironomids, diatoms and microcrustaceans that inhabit aquatic ecosystems of the Northern Neotropics are abundant and diverse. Some species are highly sensitive to changes in water chemical composition and trophic state. This study was undertaken as a first step in developing transfer functions to infer past environmental conditions in the Northern lowland Neotropics. Bioindicator species abundances were related to multiple environmental variables to exploit their use as environmental and paleoenvironmental indicators. We collected and analyzed water and surface sediment samples from 63 waterbodies located along a broad trophic state gradient and steep gradients of altitude (approximately 0-1 560 m.a.s.l.) and precipitation (approximately 400-3200 mm/y), from NW Yucatán Peninsula (Mexico) to southern Guatemala. We related 14 limnological variables to relative abundances of 282 diatom species, 66 chironomid morphospecies, 51 species of cladocerans, 29 non-marine ostracode species and six freshwater calanoid copepods. Multivariate statistics indicated that bicarbonate is the strongest driver of chironomid and copepod distribution. Trophic state is the second most important factor that determines chironomid distribution. Conductivity, which is related to the precipitation gradient and marine influence on the Yucatán Peninsula, is the main variable that shapes diatom, ostracode and cladoceran communities. Diatoms, chironomids and cladocerans displayed higher diversities (H = 2.4-2.6) than ostracodes and copepods (H = 0.7-1.8). Species richness and diversity were greater at lower elevations (< 450 m.a.s.l.) than at higher elevations in Guatemala. Distribution and diversity of bioindicators are influenced by multiple factors including altitude, precipitation, water chemistry, trophic state and human impact.

Los quironómidos, diatomeas y microcrustaceos que habitan ecosistemas acuáticos en el norte de los Neotrópicos son abundantes y diversos. Algunas especies son altamente sensibles a cambios en la composición química del agua y en el estado trófico. Este estudio se realizó como el primer paso para desarrollar funciones de transferencia para inferir condiciones ambientales en el norte de las tierras bajas de los Neotrópicos. Es por esto que las abundancias de especies bioindicadoras se relacionaron con múltiples variables ambientales con el fin de explotar al máximo su uso como indicadores ambientales y paleoambientales. Recolectamos y analizamos muestras de agua y de sedimento superficial de 63 cuerpos de agua, ubicados a lo largo de un gradiente trófico y de gradientes marcados de altitud (~0-1 560m.s.n.m.) y de precipitación (~400-3 200mm/año), desde el NO de la Península de Yucatán (México) hasta el sur de Guatemala. Relacionamos 14 variables limnológicas con las abundancias relativas de 282 especies de diatomeas, 66 morfoespecies de quironómidos, 51 especies de cladóceros, 29 especies de ostrácodos no-marinos y seis especies de agua dulce de cladóceros calanoides. La estadística multivariada indicó que el bicarbonato es el principal determinante de la distribución de quironómidos y copépodos. El estado trófico es el segundo factor más importante en determinar la distribución de quironómidos. La conductividad, que está relacionada con el gradiente de precipitación e influencia marina en la Península de Yucatán, es la principal variable en influir las comunidades de diatomeas, ostrácodos y cladóceros. Las diatomeas, quironómidos y cladóceros (H=2.4-2.6) presentaron diversidades más altas que los ostrácodos y copépodos (H=0.7-1.8). La riqueza de especies y la diversidad fueron más altas en las elevaciones bajas (<450m.s.n.m) que en elevaciones altas en Guatemala. Ostracode taxonomy has been of great interest because of their possible use as indicator species in climate and ecosystem changes. In Central and South America, few studies have been carried out and this study includes a contribution to the group. Eleven ostracode species were collected in Lago Petén Itzá (~100km2), the second largest lowland lake in Guatemala, and from its inflow tributary, Río Ixlú in November 2005 and February 2008. Twenty-seven surface sediment samples were retrieved at water depths from the littoral zone to the lake’s maximum depth (>160m). Hard and soft parts of ostracodes were analyzed, and each ostracode species was described for taxonomy, size, ecology, biology and geographic distribution. Species recorded include: Candonocypris serratomarginata?, Cypretta brevisaepta?, Cypridopsis okeechobei, Cytheridella ilosvayi, Darwinula stevensoni, Heterocypris punctata, Limnocythere opesta, Physocypria globula, Pseudocandona sp., Stenocypris major and Strandesia intrepida. Most of the species have a neotropical distribution, two are distributed world-wide (D. stevensoni and S. major), and C. okeechobei and P. globula display nearctic and neotropical distributions. We present new records of C. brevisaepta?, C. serratomarginata?, S. major, and S. intrepida in Guatemala. Physocypria globula was misidentified previously in Lago Petén Itzá as Cypria petenensis, Pseudocandona sp. was misidentified as Candona sp., and C. okeechobei was identified in the past as C. vidua. Limnocythere opesta is the only endemic species of the Petén Lake District, Guatemala. The most abundant and widely distributed species in the lake are P. globula, C. okeechobei, and Pseudocandona sp. Species restricted to the littoral zones and water depths <15m are C. brevisaepta?, D. stevensoni, H. punctata, and S. intrepida. Limnocythere opesta, C. ilosvayi, C. okeechobei, and Pseudocandona sp. are distributed from the littoral zone to a depth of 40m. Species collected only in the Ixlú tributary and in a littoral zone on the west side of the lake were C. serratomarginata? and S. major. During November, live adult L. opesta and C. okeechobei were abundant, but no C. brevisaepta? or C. serratomarginata? adults were found. Adult specimens of C. ilosvayi were more abundant in February. In general, ostracodes collected were smaller than those reported in the literature. An accurate taxonomy will improve the use of ostracode fossil assemblages in long sediment cores when reconstructing past climatic and environmental changes in the northern lowland Neotropics. Rev. La taxonomía de los ostrácodos ha sido de gran interés debido a su posible uso como especies indicadoras de cambios del clima y de los ecosistemas. En América Central y del Sur se han llevado a cabo pocos estudios. Once especies de ostrácodos fueron colectadas en el 2005 y 2008 en el Lago Petén Itzá (~100km²), el segundo lago más grande de Guatemala y en su afluente, el Río Ixlú. Veintisiete muestras de sedimentos superficiales fueron extraídas a diferentes profundidades desde la zona litoral hasta la profundidad máxima (160m) del lago. Partes duras y blandas de los ostracódos colectados fueron analizadas. Este estudio describe cada especie de ostrácodo con respecto a su taxonomía, tamaño, ecología, biología y distribución geográfica. Especies reportadas incluyen: Candonocypris serratomarginata?, Cypretta brevisaepta?, Cypridopsis okeechobei, Cytheridella ilosvayi, Darwinula stevensoni, Heterocypris punctata, Limnocythere opesta, Physocypria globula, Pseudocandona sp., Stenocypris major y Strandesia intrepida. La mayoría de las especies poseen una distribución neotropical, dos tienen una distribución mundial (D. stevensoni and S. major) y C. okeechobei y P. globula tienen una distribución neártica y neotropical. Presentamos un nuevo récord de C. brevisaepta?, C. serratomarginata?, S. major y S. intrepida para Guatemala. Physocypria globula fue identificada erróneamente en el Lago Petén Itzá como Cypria petenensis, Pseudocandona sp. había sido identificada como Candona sp. y C. okeechobei como C. vidua. Limnocythere opesta es una especie endémica de la región. Las especies más abundantes y de mayor distribución en el lago son P. globula, C. okeechobei y Pseudocandona sp. Especies restringidas a zonas litorales y aguas con una pronfundidad <15m son: D. stevensoni, H. punctata y S. intrepida. Limnocythere opesta y C. ilosvayi están distribuidas de la zona litoral a una profundidad de 40m. Especies recolectadas solamente en el afluente Ixlú y en la zona litoral oeste, fueron C. serratomarginata? y S. major. En general, los ostrácodos adultos identificados fueron más pequeños que los tamaños reportados en la literatura. Una correcta taxonomía mejorará el uso de las comunidades de ostrácodos fósiles de núcleos de sedimentos para la reconstrucción climática y ambiental de la región neotropical.
