RESUMO

The skeletal system of young animals undergoes a series of intensive and rapid changes. In this study, we aimed to verify the hypothesis that geese exhibit a distinct pattern of bone growth compared to gallinaceous species. Specifically, we hypothesised that geese would experience an accelerated growth rate in the humerus bone, which can be attributed to the increased wing mobility facilitated by their rearing in free-range systems. This need for access to both ground and water environments contributes to the unique demands placed on their skeletal development. We focused on evaluating the mechanical properties and geometry of the humerus as the forelimb bone, and the tibia as the hindlimb bone. The 320 geese used in this study were divided into 12 groups according to sex (females and males) and age (0-,1-,3-,6-,8-,12-,14-week-old). To assess bone mechanical properties, a three-point bending test was performed, along with densitometry and morphological measurements. The tibiae of the geese showed the most intensive growth until 6 weeks of age and then stabilised. The wing bones (humerus) showed only slight changes in the first weeks after hatching, and then a rapid growth between the third and sixth week, both in terms of mechanical and morphological properties. This is most likely due to a change in the geese's living environment during this period, i.e., allowing them to leave their enclosures and enter open space, which gives them the opportunity to use their wings, resulting in the rapid growth of the wing bones to support increasing muscle mass in this area. This study increases our understanding of bone growth and development in domesticated birds, specifically waterfowl species, and highlights the importance of rearing methods on the proper bone development and functionality of the entire skeletal system, and thus, on their welfare.

RESUMO

Achilles tendon pathologies are a frequent problem in the clinical practice. A distinction must be made between insertional and noninsertional tendinopathies. In addition to intrinsic risk factors, such as diabetes mellitus, there are also extrinsic risk factors, such as overuse and running. Sonography, Xray imaging and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are established imaging methods, depending on the question. The primary treatment includes a conservative approach. First-line treatment includes administration of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), physical rest and the use of assistive devices. Established conservative treatment procedures include eccentric stretching, shockwave therapy and infiltration with, e.g., platelet-rich plasma. There are numerous other conservative treatment options. After exhausting the conservative treatment options, a surgical approach can be considered. The surgical procedure depends on the clinical symptoms and findings. Established procedures are minimally invasive or endoscopic procedures or even open debridement.

RESUMO

The ankle joint has to bear the entire body weight on a relatively small joint surface. Incongruities, instabilities and deformities lead to painful arthrosis and considerable restrictions in everyday life. For many years, arthrodesis has proven to be the gold standard for end stage arthrosis; however, considering modern endoprostheses for the ankle joint it is no longer appropriate to offer only arthrodesis. The very good results of the 3rd generation 3component prostheses and the 4th generation 2component prostheses show how much the surgical treatment options for the ankle joint are currently changing. The simplified implantation techniques enable access to arthroplasty of the ankle joint for a broader spectrum of surgeons and explain the increasing implantation rates in recent years. Decisive for postoperative success are correct planning with knowledge of the leg axes and foot position, correct patient selection and exact surgical placement of the components.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There is an urgent need for improved influenza vaccines especially for older adults due to the presence of immunosenescence. It is therefore highly relevant to compare enhanced influenza vaccines with traditional influenza vaccines with respect to their effectiveness. OBJECTIVE: To compare vaccine efficacy and effectiveness of adjuvanted influenza vaccines (aTIV/aQIV) vs. non-adjuvanted standard-dose (TIV/QIV) and high-dose (TIV-HD/QIV-HD) influenza vaccines regarding influenza-related outcomes in older adults, complementing findings from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC)'s systematic review of enhanced seasonal influenza vaccines from February 2020. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in Embase and MEDLINE to identify randomised controlled trials, observational studies and systematic reviews, published since ECDC's systematic review (between 7 February 2020 and 6 September 2021). Included studies were appraised with either the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool, ROBINS-I or AMSTAR 2. RESULTS: Eleven analyses from nine real-world evidence (RWE) studies comprising ∼53 million participants and assessing the relative vaccine effectiveness (rVE) of aTIV vs. TIV, QIV and/or TIV-HD in adults aged ≥65 years over the 2006/07-2008/09 and 2011/12-2019/20 influenza seasons were identified. Nine analyses found that aTIV was significantly more effective than TIV and QIV in reducing influenza-related outcomes by clinical setting and suspected influenza outbreaks (rVE ranging from 7.5% to 25.6% for aTIV vs. TIV and 7.1% to 36.3% for aTIV vs. QIV). Seven analyses found similar effectiveness of aTIV vs. TIV-HD in reducing influenza-related medical encounters, inpatient stays and hospitalisations/emergency room visits. In three analyses, aTIV was significantly more effective than TIV-HD in reducing influenza-related medical encounters and office visits (rVE ranging from 6.6% to 16.6%). Risk of bias of identified studies was moderate to high. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that both adjuvanted and high-dose vaccines are effective alternatives for vaccination programmes in older adults and preferable over conventional standard-dose vaccines.

RESUMO

Atom Probe Tomography (APT) is currently a well-established technique to analyse the composition of solid materials including metals, semiconductors and ceramics with up to near-atomic resolution. Using an aqueous glucose solution, we now extended the technique to frozen solutions. While the mass signals of the common glucose fragments CxHy and CxOyHz overlap with (H2O)nH from water, we achieved stoichiometrically correct values via signal deconvolution. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to investigate the stability of the detected pyranose fragments. This paper demonstrates APT's capabilities to achieve sub-nanometre resolution in tracing whole glucose molecules in a frozen solution by using cryogenic workflows. We use a solution of defined concentration to investigate the chemical resolution capabilities as a step toward the measurement of biological molecules. Due to the evaporation of nearly intact glucose molecules, their position within the measured 3D volume of the solution can be determined with sub-nanometre resolution. Our analyses take analytical techniques to a new level, since chemical characterization methods for cryogenically-frozen solutions or biological materials are limited.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the radiographic lung pattern and topographical distribution in canine eosinophilic bronchopneumopathy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for dogs diagnosed with eosinophilic bronchopneumopathy. Lateral thoracic radiographs were examined for the presence of increased radiopacity, classification of pattern, topography of lung changes (cranioventral, perihilar, caudodorsal, caudoventral) and severity of pulmonary lesions. RESULTS: Forty-four cases were identified with the Labrador retriever being the most commonly affected breed; there was a mean age of 5 years and an equal gender distribution. Coughing was the most common clinical sign. Circulating eosinophilia was present in 39% of dogs, with a mean peripheral eosinophilia of 5.1×109 cells/L and a mean bronchoalveolar lavage fluid eosinophilia of 40%. Eighty percent of dogs had an abnormal lung pattern in at least one of the four lung fields; the remaining had normal thoracic radiographs. The most common patterns were a bronchial and a bronchointerstitial pattern, with 41 and 89% distribution to the caudodorsal lung field, respectively. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: A bronchial and bronchointerstitial pattern are the most common radiographic lung patterns seen in canine eosinophilic bronchopneumopathy with these patterns most frequently topographically distributed to at least the caudodorsal lung field. Furthermore, within the caudodorsal lung field, a bronchointerstitial pattern predominates. This radiographic and topographical finding may allow eosinophilic bronchopneumopathy to take precedence on a differential diagnoses list before confirmatory bronchoalveolar lavage fluid sampling.

RESUMO

Selection of appropriate housing conditions for sows is critical for their physical health and long-term reproductive success. The present objective was to evaluate the influences of housing system postweaning (i.e., individual stalls (IS) or group pens (GP)), season and parity on piglet productivity of sows in a commercial setting. This study utilized 3 053 Polish Large White×Polish Landrace sows that were weaned at a rate of 20-30 animals per week at the median age of 4 weeks; 1 474 sows were moved into GP of seven to eight animals each, while 1 579 were placed in IS after weaning. Starting 2 days postweaning all animals were checked for estrus with a teaser boar and then artificially inseminated using 3×109 spermatozoa per dose of an inseminate at the onset of heat and 24 h later. The proportion of sows showing the signs of standing heat at or before 6 days postweaning was greater (P < 0.05) for sows moved to GP compared with IS; this difference manifested mainly in second parity sows weaned in the summer and fall. Conception and farrowing rates were significantly higher (P < 0.01) and the weaning-to-estrus interval shorter in GP compared with IS sows in every season but autumn. Mean litter size was lower (P < 0.05) in IS groups in summer, autumn, and winter, and the number of live-born piglets/sow was lower (P < 0.05) for IS sows in the summer and fall. Beneficial effects of group housing on piglet productivity manifested up until the seventh consecutive farrowing and then began to wane. In summary, there was a significantly greater proportion of sows going estrus "on time" (i.e., <7 days) in group housing compared to single stalls but this effect was confined to the second parity sows during the summer and fall months; these results suggest the existence of a seasonal and age-related aspect to sow fertility worthy of further investigation. While both housing systems have their pros and cons, our present results indicate that, in commercial settings, group housing postweaning improved nearly all reproductive parameters of sows.

RESUMO

The specific changes in antral follicle numbers and wave-like development have remained unrevealed in cyclic ewes fed high-protein, high-energy lupin grain for 6 days during the luteal phase of the estrous cycle (i.e., short-term nutritional flushing). This study was mainly conducted to determine ovarian effects of the 6-day lupin grain feeding in non-prolific Polish Mountain ewes, using transrectal ovarian ultrasonography and abdominal videoendoscopy. Estrus and ovulations were synchronized in 24 ewes with progestin-releasing intravaginal sponges for 12 days during the middle portion of the breeding season (September-October; 50.0458°N, 19.8406°E). Twenty-four ewes were assigned to three equal groups (n=8 each), including the Control group being fed the maintenance diet (i.e., hay-only), Treatment 1 receiving 500 g of lupin grain once a day, and Treatment 2 receiving 250 g of lupin grain twice a day, from days 9-14 of the synchronized estrous cycle (day 0=first ovulation of the interovulatory period studied). No differences were observed in the mean ovulation rate among the three groups of Polish Mountain ewes (P>0.05). Ovarian antral follicles emerging in the penultimate wave of the estrous cycle in Treatment 2 ewes had a longer growth phase (p <0.05) and attained a greater diameter (p <0.05) before ovulation, in comparison to those in the other two groups. A final wave of the interovulatory interval emerged ~1 day earlier in Treatment 2 than in Treatment 1 ewes (p <0.05). Nutritional supplementation with lupin grain increased the number of 3-mm follicles in Treatment 2 ewes (p <0.05). The results of this study indicated that short-term nutritional flushing with lupin grain from mid- to late luteal phase did not consistently enhance ovulatory responses in non-prolific genotypes of ewes. Although the administration of lupins altered the timing of wave emergence, ovulatory follicle diameter, or duration of different stages of the follicular lifespan, it failed to increase the number of ovulatory follicles emerging in the penultimate and final waves of the estrous cycle in non-prolific Polish Mountain sheep.

RESUMO

This is the first report of an aortic sinus aneurysm with a communication to the main pulmonary artery, resulting in left-to-right shunting, diagnosed in vivo in a dog. There was also a second left-to-right shunt through a patent ductus arteriosus. Computed tomography (CT) angiography was used to confirm both congenital anomalies and assess the relative contributions of the two left-to-right shunts to left-sided volume overload.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Following the first investigational study on the use of extracorporeal photopheresis for the treatment of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma published in 1983, this technology has received continued use and further recognition for additional earlier as well as refractory forms. After the publication of the first guidelines for this technology in the JEADV in 2014, this technology has maintained additional promise in the treatment of other severe and refractory conditions in a multidisciplinary setting. It has confirmed recognition in well-known documented conditions such as graft-vs.-host disease after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation, systemic sclerosis, solid organ transplant rejection including lung, heart and liver and to a lesser extent inflammatory bowel disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In order to further provide recognized expert practical guidelines for the use of this technology for all indications, the European Dermatology Forum (EDF) again proceeded to address these questions in the hands of the recognized experts within and outside the field of dermatology. This was done using the recognized and approved guidelines of EDF for this task. All authors had the opportunity to review each contribution as it was added. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: These updated 2020 guidelines provide at present the most comprehensive available expert recommendations for the use of extracorporeal photopheresis based on the available published literature and expert consensus opinion. The guidelines were divided into two parts: PART I covers Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, chronic graft-vs.-host disease and acute graft-vs.-host disease, while PART II will cover scleroderma, solid organ transplantation, Crohn's disease, use of ECP in paediatric patients, atopic dermatitis, type 1 diabetes, pemphigus, epidermolysis bullosa acquisita and erosive oral lichen planus.

RESUMO

Measuring biological samples by atom probe tomography (APT) in their natural environment, i.e. aqueous solution, would take this analytical method, which is currently well established for metals, semi-conductive materials and non-metals, to a new level. It would give information about the 3D chemical structure of biological systems, which could enable unprecedented insights into biological systems and processes, such as virus protein interactions. For this future aim, we present as a first essential step the APT analysis of pure water (Milli-Q) which is the main component of biological systems. After Cryo-preparation, nanometric water tips are field evaporated with assistance by short laser pulses. The obtained data sets of several tens of millions of atoms reveal a complex evaporation behavior. Understanding the field evaporation process of water is fundamental for the measurement of more complex biological systems. For the identification of the individual signals in the mass spectrum, DFT calculations were performed to prove the stability of the detected molecules.
