The spread of superbugs in dairy products can jeopardize global public health. To date, information on the incidence rates of virulent and ß-lactams-resistant (BLR) Salmonella in cheeses from rural areas of Egypt has been lacking. Biochemical, serological, antibiotic susceptibility, and multiplex PCR (M-PCR) tests were performed to identify and characterize Salmonella isolates. In this study, 44 (15.71%) Salmonella isolates of eight different serotypes were recovered from 280 samples of Rumi and pasteurized Kariesh cheeses across the Nile Delta region of Egypt. The most predominant serotypes were S. Typhimurium, S. Enteritidis, and S. Infantis. The virulence genes (invA, stn, and hilA) were identified in all isolates. However, spvC was only detected in S. Typhimurium. The highest resistance was developed against Erythromycin and Clindamycin (90.91%), followed by Ceftazidime and Cephalothin (84.09%). Meropenem and colistin were the most effective antibiotics. A high proportion (79.55%) of multi-drug resistance (MDR) isolates carried narrow spectrum (NS), extended-spectrum (ES), and AmpC-BLR genes. The blaOXA-1, blaOXA-2, blaTEM-1, blaCTX-M, blaCMY-1, and blaCMY-2 BLR genes were positive in 37.04%, 29.63%, 25.93%, 14.81%, 37.04%, and 3.70% of isolates, respectively. In conclusion, a high prevalence of virulence and BLR genes harboring Salmonella strains in Egyptian cheeses is considered a great threat to public health.

Concerns regarding the possible hazards to human health have been raised by the growing usage of silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) in a variety of applications, including industrial, agricultural, and medical applications. This in vivo subchronic study was conducted to assess the following: (1) the toxicity of orally administered SiNPs on the liver, kidneys, and adrenal glands; (2) the relationship between SiNPs exposure and oxidative stress; and (3) the role of magnesium in mitigating these toxic effects. A total of 24 Sprague Dawley male adult rats were divided equally into four groups, as follows: control group, magnesium (Mg) group (50 mg/kg/d), SiNPs group (100 mg/kg/d), and SiNPs+ Mg group. Rats were treated with SiNPs by oral gavage for 90 days. The liver transaminases, serum creatinine, and cortisol levels were evaluated. The tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels were measured. Additionally, the weight of the organs and the histopathological changes were examined. Our results demonstrated that SiNPs exposure caused increased weight in the kidneys and adrenal glands. Exposure to SiNPs was also associated with significant alterations in liver transaminases, serum creatinine, cortisol, MDA, and GSH. Additionally, histopathological changes were significantly reported in the liver, kidneys, and adrenal glands of SiNPs-treated rats. Notably, when we compared the control group with the treated groups with SiNPs and Mg, the results revealed that magnesium could mitigate SiNPs-induced biochemical and histopathologic changes, confirming its effective role as an antioxidant that reduced the accumulation of SiNPs in tissues, and that it returns the levels of liver transaminases, serum creatinine, cortisol, MDA, and GSH to almost normal values.

Objectives: To evaluate the impact of silodosin on stages of flexible ureteroscopy (F-URS) procedures, complications, and stone-free rate (SFR). Patients and Methods: A prospective, randomized, controlled comparison research was conducted on 106 patients who were randomly allocated into two groups: the study group (52 patients) received F-URS with preoperative daily uptake of 8 mg silodosin for 10 days, and the control group (54 patients) received F- URS without silodosin uptake. Two patients were lost during the follow up in the study group and four patients were also lost in the controls. Results: Operative time, application access sheath time (AAST), entrance to ureteric orifice time (ETUOT), and entrance to bladder time (ETBT) were significantly lower in the study group compared to controls. Meanwhile, F-URS time & laser time was higher in the study group compared to controls but without statistically significant difference. Complications were insignificalty different between both studied goups with no impact on SFR. Conclusion: Before ureteroscopy, silodosin, an adjunctive alpha-blocker therapy, was successful in treating stones resulting in shortening the procedural time, with no impact on SFR or complication rate.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of daily 5-mg tadalafil treatment for men who have erectile dysfunction (ED) and premature ejaculation (PE), and to assess the long-term follow-up for ED and PE improvement persistence years after the cessation of medication. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective, single-blind, randomised study included 160 patients with ED and PE. All were evaluated using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) questionnaire to evaluate ED and intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT) for PE. Patients were subdivided into two equal groups. Group I (80 patients) treated with daily 5-mg tadalafil for 3 months, and Group II (80 patients) treated with a placebo for the same period. After 3 months of treatment and 2 years later after cessation of tadalafil, all patients were assessed for ED and PE. RESULTS: The mean (SD) IELT and IIEF-5 score pre-treatment were 37 (11.24) s and 13.2 (4.2) for Group I, while in Group II they were 35.98 (10.8) s and 13.12 (4.11), respectively. After 3 months of treatment, the mean (SD) IELT in Group I showed a highly significant improvement from 37 (11.24) s to 120.5 (47.37) s (P < 0.001) but Group II showed no significant improvement from baseline to [39.43 (13.6) s; P > 0.05]. For the IIEF-5 score, there was a highly significant improvement from baseline to 20.45 (4.5) in Group I (P < 0.001), while there was no significant difference in Group II from baseline to [15 (4.84); P > 0.05]. At 2 years after cessation of tadalafil, there was statistically significant improvement in the IELT and IIEF-5 from baseline to endpoint . CONCLUSION: Oral daily 5-mg tadalafil was effective, tolerable, and safe treatment for patients with ED and PE. OBJECTIVE: To detect the possible gonadotoxic effects of tramadol dependence on seminal fluid parameters, and prolactin and testosterone hormone levels. PATIENTS SUBJECTS AND METHODS: There were 94 participants who were divided into a tramadol-dependent group (T-group; 56 patients) and a control group (C-group; 38 healthy volunteers). The following variables were evaluated: testosterone level, prolactin level, erectile function, libido, semen parameters, and effect of tramadol dose and dependence duration. RESULTS: There was a significant increase in erectile dysfunction (ED) and decreased libido in the T-group vs C-group. Also, the serum testosterone level was lower in the T-group vs the C-group, while the serum prolactin level was significantly higher in the T-group vs the C-group. All semen parameters were low in the T-group except for abnormal forms, which were high. As the dose of tramadol increased there was a more negative effect on the previous parameter, while ED, libido, semen volume and concentration showed no significant changes. When comparing tramadol doses of 400-1000 mg/day to >1000 mg/day, the tramadol blood level increased with high doses, while serum testosterone level decreased when the dose increased and the prolactin level increased when the dose increased. Progressive motility of the sperm decreased and abnormal forms increased. Also increased duration of tramadol administration was also accompanied by a more negative effect on these parameters. CONCLUSION: Tramadol administration has a negative effect on hormone levels, libido, erectile function, and semen characters.Abbreviations: ED: erectile dysfunction; EF: erectile function.

BACKGROUND: Hepatic cholesterol accumulation in small breed dogs is a leading risk factor for hepatic fatty changes, gallbladder hypomotility, and cholelith development, which, if not discovered early, could lead to life-threatening choledocholithiasis and acute pancreatitis. OBJECTIVE: This study proposed to assess the use of hepatocyte-derived canine familiaris (cfa)-microRNAs (miRNA-122, -34a, and -21) as new diagnostic serum biomarkers of liver steatosis or fibrosis, for which both processes have been implicated in canine cholecystolithiasis. METHODS: Forty client-owned dogs diagnosed with cholecystolithiasis and hepatic steatosis (C+HS) or fibrosis (C+HF) based on ultrasonographic, biochemical, and histopathologic findings, and 20 healthy dogs used as controls were included in the study. Serum cfa-miRNA expression was determined using a real-time polymerase chain reaction assay. RESULTS: Serum cfa-miRNA-122 and -34a expression was significantly upregulated in the C+HS (P < .001) and C+HF (P < .01) groups compared with the control group and showed a positive correlation with alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total bilirubin (TBIL), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT), total cholesterol (TC), and triglycerides (TG) levels in the C+HS group. Cfa-miRNA-122 and -34a expression discriminated the diseased groups from the control group better than traditional serum-derived liver biomarkers, as evidenced by areas under the receiver operating characteristic (AUC-ROC) curve of 0.99 and 0.97 for cfa-miRNA-122 expression in the C+HS and C+HF groups, and 1.0 and 0.96 for cfa-miRNA-34a in the C+HS and C+HF groups, respectively. Cfa-miRNA-21 expression was upregulated only in the C+HF group compared with the C+HS (P < .01) and control (P < .001) groups and showed a positive correlation with serum ALT, AST, TBIL, ALP, and GGT and negative correlation with serum TC and TG levels. Cfa-miRNA-21 expression could also differentiate the C+HF group from the control and C+HS groups with a diagnostic performance superior to that of the conventional serum biochemical variables as evidenced by AUCs of 1.0 and 0.98, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Serum cfa-miRNA-122, -34a, and -21 expression was significantly upregulated in dogs with cholecystolithiasis with hepatic steatosis or fibrosis compared with control dogs. These miRNAs could serve as novel biomarkers for hepatic steatosis or fibrosis, which have been implicated in the pathogenesis of cholecystolithiasis.

Objectives: To assess the efficacy of intralesional injection of mitomycin C (MMC), using a novel adjustable-tip needle, following visual internal urethrotomy (VIU) in reducing the recurrence of de novo bulbar urethral stricture disease (USD). Patients and methods: Using closed envelopes, 50 patients diagnosed with bulbar USD of <2 cm were randomised to undergo either VIU with MMC injections (Group-A) or VIU alone (Group-B). The urethrotomy was performed under direct vision using a cold-knife and incisions were made at the 12-, 4-, and 8-o'clock positions followed by intralesional injection of 10 mL MMC (0.4 mg/mL) using a novel depth-adjusting needle. All patients were objectively evaluated pre- and postoperatively at 3, 6, and 9 months using uroflowmetry (maximum urinary flow rate), post-void residual urine volume, and retrograde urethrography. Results: Of all 50 patients; five missed follow-up (four in Group-A, one in Group-B), hence 45 cases were available for analysis (21 in Group-A and 24 in Group-B). The mean (SD) age of patients was 34.33 (7.2) and 37.7 (10.2) years in Group-A and Group-B, respectively (P = 0.22). The depth-adjusting needle was easy to use and all injections were successfully completed. In terms of stricture recurrence, there was significant decrease in Group-A (three patients, 14.3%) compared with Group-B; (12 patients, 50%) (P = 0.01). On multivariate Cox regression analysis, the VIU with MMC was found as a sole factor associated with marked decrease in stricture recurrence (hazard ratio 0.23, 95% confidence interval 0.06-0.93; P = 0.04). The Kaplan-Meier survival curve for recurrence-free survival showed a statistically significant difference between both groups (85.7% vs 50.0%; chi-squared = 7.079, P = 0.008). Conclusion: The use of a novel depth-adjusting needle was easily applied and MMC injection after VIU resulted in a significantly lower recurrence of de novo bulbar USD. Introduction: To detect safety and feasibility of miniperc and extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (SWL) for treatment of average-sized (1-2 cm), radiopaque lower pole calculi in a prospective randomized manner. Patients and Methods: In the period from January 2014 to June 2015, 150 patients were attached to this study with single lower pole radiopaque stone ranging from 10 to 20 mm. Patients were divided randomly into two groups using computer-generated randomization in an equal manner. First group patients were subjected to miniperc procedure, while second group patients underwent SWL. Patient's characters, stones' characters, fluoroscopic time, operative time, blood transfusion, hospital stay, retreatment, auxiliary procedure (AP), and complications using modified Clavien grading are tabulated and analyzed. Results: This study included two equal groups with 75 patients in each group. With regard to age (37.75 ± 11.25 vs 40.55 ± 10.55), body mass index (26.92 ± 2.26 vs 27.29 ± 2.87), and stone size (1.55 ± 0.28 vs 1.57 ± 0.26), there was no significant statistical difference in both groups. Stone-free rate (SFR) (76% vs 96%), operative time (44.81 ± 7.06 vs 93.37 ± 12.29 minutes), fluoroscopy time (53 ± 2.45 vs 180 ± 7.31 seconds), hospital stay (5.72 ± 1.01 vs 45.19 ± 8.48 hour), and blood transfusion were significantly more in the miniperc group. Retreatment rate (45.3% vs 2.7%) and AP (24% vs 4%) were significantly greater in the SWL group. Conclusion: SWL is less invasive than percutaneous stone removal, but it is also less effective for lower pole radiopaque calculi. Miniperc has better SFR and lower auxiliary and retreatment rates; however, it resulted in more drawbacks.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate erectile function (EF) after anastomotic (AU) vs substitutional urethroplasty (SU) for bulbar urethral stricture. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a prospective comparative non-randomised clinical study conducted in the Department of Urology, Benha University Hospital, between September 2015 and September 2018, involving 34 male patients with urethral stricture. Preoperatively, all the patients completed the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF)-15 (EF Domain) to establish baseline sexual function. AU was performed in 21 patients and SU in 13. The IIEF-15 (EF Domain) was administered again at 3- and 6-months postoperatively and compared to the preoperative results. RESULTS: A total of 34 patients were included in the study, 21 in the AU group with a stricture length of ≤3 cm, and 13 in the SU group with a stricture length of >3 cm. All patients were sexually active preoperatively. In the AU group, seven patients developed erectile dysfunction (ED) at 3-months postoperatively, with four of them improving during the subsequent 3 months, but three had persistent ED at 6-months postoperatively. In the SU group, two patients developed ED at 3-months postoperatively and they improved during the subsequent 3 months. In the AU group, the mean IIEF-15 (EF Domain) score was 27.6 preoperatively, which decreased to 25.6 at 6-months postoperatively; however, this was statistically insignificant (P = 0.10). While in the SU group, the mean IIEF-15 (EF Domain) score was the same before and at 6 months after SU at 27.2 (P = 1.0). CONCLUSION: At 6-months postoperatively, there was no statistically significant impact of urethroplasty for bulbar urethral stricture on erectile function.Abbreviations: AU: anastomotic urethroplasty; ED: erectile dysfunction; EF: erectile function; IIEF: International Index of Erectile Function; SU: substitutional urethroplasty.

Computed tomography angiography (CTA) and biochemical parameters cannot specify liver pathologies in dogs with congenital portosystemic shunts (CPSS) that are easily determined by invasive histopathology. This study aims to assess the possibility of using circulating serum canine familiaris (cfa) microRNAs (miRNAs) as novel non-invasive serum-based fingerprints for liver injuries associated with various morphologies of extrahepatic and intrahepatic portosystemic shunts (EHPSS and IHPSS). Data were obtained from 12 healthy dogs and 84 dogs confirmed to have EHPSS (splenocaval, splenophrenic, splenoazygos, right gastrocaval (RGC), right gastrocaval with caudal loop (RGC-CL)) and IHPSS (right divisional and left divisional) using CTA. Hepatic pathologies were determined by histopathology. Serum expression of miRNAs was assessed by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Based on the nature of liver injuries in each shunt type, cfa-miR-122 was significantly upregulated in all CPSS groups. Meanwhile, serums cfa-miR-34a and 21 were not significantly expressed in splenophrenic or splenoazygos groups, but they were extensively upregulated in splenocaval, RGC, RGC-CL groups and less frequently in right or left divisional groups. Also, serum cfa-miR126 was significantly upregulated in both IHPSS groups but less significantly expressed in RGC, RGC-CL, and splenocaval groups. Overall, estimated cfa-miRNAs could serve as novel biomarkers to mirror the histopathological and molecular events within the liver in each shunt type.

Cyclophosphamide is an alkylating agent widely used as anticancer drug, reported to exert cytotoxic effects attributed to oxidative stress. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the protective effect of ethanolic extract of garlic (EEG) against cyclophosphamide (Cyp)-induced hematological disturbance and immunosuppressive and hepatotoxic effects. Forty male Wistar albino rats were randomized into four equal groups: the normal control one, the Cyp-treated group (50 mg/kg BW/IM, once weekly), the EEG-treated group (300 mg/kg BW, orally, daily), and the Cyp & EEG group. All rats received their relevant treatments for four consecutive weeks. This study revealed that Cyp significantly decreased erythrocyte count, hemoglobin (Hb), packed cell volume (PCV), and total leukocyte and lymphocyte counts. However, the counts of neutrophils, eosinophils, and toxic neutrophils were elevated. Additionally, hepatic malondialdehyde (MDA) and levels of liver and renal biomarkers were significantly elevated in the Cyp-treated group. Otherwise, hepatic catalase (CAT), reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were significantly lower than the control rats. Furthermore, Cyp significantly reduced whole blood respiratory burst activity (NBT), serum lysozyme and bactericidal activities, interlukin-12 (IL-12), and interferon-γ. In contrast, the levels of nitric oxide (NO), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interlukin-1ß (IL-1ß) were elevated. Additionally, Cyp induced hepatic and renal histopathological alterations. Data in the present study demonstrated that EEG has immunomodulatory and antioxidant effects and has the ability to diminish the alterations induced by Cyp.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness and safety of bipolar plasma kinetic energy for en bloc enucleation of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: In all, 46 patients diagnosed with suspected NMIBC were included. All patients were diagnosed using ultrasonography, computed tomography, and diagnostic cystoscopy, and then underwent bipolar plasma kinetic enucleation of bladder tumour (PKEBT). At the end of the procedure, all patients had a single-dose (40 mg in 40 mL saline) intravesical installation of mitomycin C (<6 h after bipolar PKEBT). Follow-up diagnostic cystoscopy was performed at 3, 6, and 12 months. RESULTS: The mean (SD) enucleation time was 17 (5.4) min, operative time was 27.9 (11.4) min, haemoglobin drop was 1.3 (0.9) g/dL, postoperative irrigation time was 1.7 (2.3) h, and hospital stay was 35.4 (13) h. There was intraoperative bleeding in three patients, with one requiring blood transfusion. There were no other perioperative complications. At the 1-month follow-up, six (13%) patients were diagnosed with residual tumour and underwent repeat bipolar PKEBT. The overall recurrence rate at 12 months' follow-up was 15.2%. CONCLUSION: Bipolar PKEBT is an effective procedure for managing NMIBC, as it preserves the entire lamina propria and detrusor muscle in well-intact specimens, with negligible perioperative complications.

OBJECTIVE: To compare outcomes of the Mathieu incised-plate (Mathieu-IP) technique vs the standard tubularised incised-plate (TIP) technique for primary management of distal hypospadias. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between April 2012 and August 2015, 66 patients (aged 15-60 months) with primary distal hypospadias were randomly allocated to two groups. Group 1 included 34 patients who underwent Mathieu-IP repair and Group 2 included 32 patients managed using the TIP technique for primary management of distal hypospadias. Postoperatively, all patients were examined weekly up to 1 month and then at 3 and 6 months. Perioperative data, complications and outcomes of both procedures were statistically analysed and compared. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences in patient demographics between the groups at baseline. There was no statistically significant difference in the mean (SD) operative time between Groups 1 and 2, at 95 (7.6) and 91.2 (8.1) min, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference in the shape of the urine stream at micturition or the neomeatus between the groups postoperatively. The rate of postoperative fistula was significantly higher in Group 2 (TIP) compared to Group 1 (Mathieu-IP), at 18.7% vs 2.9% (P = 0.004). There was no postoperative meatal stenosis in Group 1, which did occur in five patients (15.6%) in Group 2 (P = 0.002). CONCLUSION: The Mathieu-IP technique appeared to be better than the standard TIP technique with regard to postoperative fistula formation and meatal stenosis, and with acceptable cosmesis.

OBJECTIVE: To prospectively investigate the effectiveness of high single scrotal-incision orchidopexy (HSSIO) for palpable undescended testis (PUDT) in infants aged 6-24 months. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From March 2012 to July 2014, 46 age range-restricted (6-24 months) infants with 57 PUDT underwent HSSIO after obtaining written consent from their parents. The exclusion criteria were ectopic, retractile testes and recurrent cases. All infants were examined before surgery in the outpatient department and after anaesthesia induction immediately before surgery. All infants had general anaesthesia with a caudal block. The operative time, intraoperative and postoperative complications, and follow-up of the infants at 0.5, 3 and 6 months were recorded and analysed. RESULTS: The mean (SD; range) operative time was 23.45 (3.28; 18-29) min. A hernia sac was found in 39 (68.4%) UDTs. For postoperative complications, only one infant developed a scrotal haematoma that was managed conservatively. The procedure was successful in 56/57 PUDT (98%). An auxiliary procedure was needed in one case, to obtain more length of the cord by extension of the incision to the external ring. CONCLUSION: HSSIO is a safe and feasible technique, with many benefits, and as such should be considered as the standard technique for orchidopexy in infants aged 6-24 months.

OBJECTIVE: To prospectively compare the outcome of standard mini-percutaneous nephrolithotomy (SmPCNL) versus tubeless mini-percutaneous nephrolithotomy (TmPCNL) as primary treatments of renal stones. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In all, 80 patients with a solitary radio-opaque renal stone and candidates for PCNL were selected. The patients were randomly divided into two groups of 40, one group treated with SmPCNL and the other with TmPCNL. Patients and stone characters, as well as operative and postoperative data of both groups were compared and statistically analysed. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the two groups for patient demographics and stone characteristics. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups for the mean operative time, mean postoperative drop in haemoglobin, mean postoperative urine leakage, mean hospital stay, and stone-free rate. The mean (SD) postoperative dose of analgesia was statistically significantly higher in the SmPCNL group compared with the TmPCNL group, at 112.5 (48.03) versus 48.8 (43.5) mg, respectively. CONCLUSION: Both procedures are safe and effective for managing renal stones, without any significant difference between the two procedures; however, the postoperative analgesic requirement is significantly higher in SmPCNL.

OBJECTIVE: This was a prospective study to compare the outcome of laparoscopic transperitoneal ureterolithotomy (LTU) with laparoscopic retroperitoneal ureterolithotomy (LRU) as a primary treatment for a large stone in the proximal ureter. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 24 patients with a solitary, large (>1.5 cm), and impacted stone in the proximal ureter was selected and randomly divided into two groups. The first group included 13 patients who were treated by LTU, and the second group included 11 patients who were treated by LRU. Patient demographics and stone characteristics as well as the operative and postoperative data of both groups were compared and statistically analyzed. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the two groups regarding patient demographics and stone characteristics. The mean operative time was significantly shorter in the LTU group than in the LRU group [116.2±21.8 min vs 137.3±17.9 min, respectively (p=0.02)]. The mean time to oral intake was significantly longer in the LTU group than in the LRU group [21.2±4.9 h vs 15.5±2.8 h, respectively (p=0.002)]. There was significant higher rate (27.3%) of changing to open surgery in LRU (p=0.04). The stone-free rate was significantly higher in the LTU group than in the LRU group [100% vs. 72.8%, respectively (p=0.03)]. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups regarding the mean blood loss, mean hospital stay, mean analgesia dose, blood transfusion rate, postoperative fever, and stone migration during surgery. CONCLUSION: Both approaches of laparoscopic ureterolithotomy are effective in treating large impacted stones in the proximal ureter. LTU has significantly shorter operative time and lower rate of open conversion but has a significantly longer time to oral intake.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether a half-dose of bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) can reduce toxicity without affecting its efficacy in the management of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From January 2012 to January 2014, 80 patients with superficial bladder cancer and in the intermediate-risk group were simply randomised to receive two different doses of BCG, i.e., a full dose of 90 mg (group A) or a half-dose of 45 mg (group B). There were no significant differences in clinical and pathological characteristics between the groups. At completion of the study, 40 patients could be evaluated in each group. RESULTS: All patients were evaluated for a follow-up of 12 months after treatment. There was no significant difference in recurrence rate (15 patients, 38%, in group A and 16, 40%, in group B) in the two groups, and no difference in progression rate of the disease, at eight patients (20%) in each group. There were significant differences between groups A and B in toxicity (grade 1 adverse events, 70% vs. 60%; grade 2, 18% vs. 7.5%, respectively). Grade 3 adverse events were only reported in group A (2.5%). CONCLUSION: The half dose of intravesical BCG instillation can reduce the toxicity and side-effects that are associated with the treatment of superficial bladder cancer, without affecting the efficacy of therapy.
