RESUMO

PURPOSE: To show the cornea/transplantation activity of our clinic in 2009 and 2010 METHODS: We assessed: The number of corneal prelevations. The number of surgeries. The etiology of the disesses which need cornea/transplantation. CONCLUSIONS: Although there is a slow increase, the activity of corneal transplantation has not a satisfactory level.

RESUMO

Diabetus mellitus is associated with numerous ocular complications. Diabetic keratopathy occurs in response to a neuropathy of the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve, but also as a result of epithelial subclinical abnormalities, limbal vasculopathy and decrease in tear production. It comprises several symptomatic corneal conditions inducing superficial punctate keratopathy and persistent corneal epithelial erosions; the latter can progress to corneal ulceration and is often resistant to routine clinical management.

RESUMO

Corneal wound healing is divided into several phases that, in reality are part of a continuous process, involving the corneal epithelium and stroma, corneal nerves, inflammatory cells, lacrimal glands. The layers of the cornea interact through autocrine and paracrine modulation, mediated by cytokines, growth factors, proteolytic enzymes. Corneal healing is affected by many factors, including: wound size and depth, causative agent, age, medication, preexisting diseases.

RESUMO

Congenital ocular melanocytosis (COM) is an extremely rare melanocytic hyperplasia (0.038% in Caucasian population); it affects episclera and sclera. The conjunctival epithelium is not affected, as opposed to conjunctival melanosis. The pigmentation is grayish-blue and its consistency with the underlying tissues as the conjunctiva moves (deep pigmentation) is an essential diagnostic clue. COM may be isolated or associated with facial pigmentation, in the area innervated by the trigeminal nerve--known as oculodermal melanocytosis or nevus of Ota. COM may associate the following findings: iris hypercromia, iris mammillations, fundus hypercromia, uveal melanoma (most frequent choroidal melanoma) and glaucoma (10%). Melanocytes have been found in the brain, orbit, bucal mucosa in COM.

RESUMO

The authors present the case of a female patient, 72 years old, smoker for 50 years, with a complex pathology--cardiovascular (coronary artery disease with heart failure, hypercoagulable state and 40% left carotid artery stenosis) and breast carcinoma--surgically treated, who was admitted in the Ophthalmology Clinic of the Emergency Central Military Hospital Bucharest, with the diagnosis of Left Eye Branch Retinal Artery Occlusion (temporal inferior) acute form--which occurred 10 days ago. The reason of the hospital admission was left eye visual field deficit--horizontal (altitudinal), in the superior 1/2 of the visual field, but not accompanied by the left eye visual acuity decrease (left eye best-corrected visual acuity was 20/20--due to the particularity of the case by the existence of 2 cilio-retinal arteries at the left eye). Complete ocular and systemic work-up was performed. It was decided that at this stage from the beginning of the Branch Retinal Artery Occlusion, can be tempted trans-luminal photo-embolysis of the embolus located at the origin of the temporal inferior branch of the Central Retinal Artery with the Nd: YAG laser--technique which was used as national premiere in Romania.
