RESUMO

Modulation of lithium-ion battery (LIB) anodes/cathodes with three-dimensional (3D) topographical hierarchy ridges, surface interfaces, and vortices promotes the power tendency of LIBs in terms of high-energy density and power density. Large-scale meso-geodesics offer a diverse range of spatial LIB models along the geodetically shaped downward/upward curvature, leading to open-ended movement gate options, and diffusible space orientations. Along with the primary 3D super-scalable hierarchy, the formation of structural features of building block egress/ingress, curvature cargo-like sphere vehicles, irregularly located serrated cuticles with abundant V-undulated rigidness, feathery tube pipe conifers, and a band of dagger-shaped needle sticks on anode/cathode electrode surfaces provides high performance LIB modules. The geodetically-shaped anode/cathode design enables the uniqueness of all LIB module configurations in terms of powerful lithium ion (Li+) movement revolving in out-/in- and up-/downward diffusion regimes and in hovering electron density for high-speed discharge rates. The stability of built-in anode//cathode full-scale LIB-model meso-geodesics affords an outstanding long-term cycling performance. The full-cell LIB meso-geodesics offered 91.5% retention of the first discharge capacity of 165.8 mAhg-1 after 2000 cycles, Coulombic efficiency of ~99.6% at the rate of 1 C and room temperature, and high specific energy density of ≈119 Wh kg-1. This LIB meso-geodesic module configuration may align perfectly with the requirements of the energy density limit mandatory for long-term EV driving range and the scale-up commercial manufactures.

RESUMO

To control the power hierarchy design of lithium-ion battery (LIB) built-up sets for electric vehicles (EVs), we offer intensive theoretical and experimental sets of choice anode/cathode architectonics that can be modulated in full-scale LIB built-up models. As primary structural tectonics, heterogeneous composite superstructures of full-cell-LIB (anode//cathode) electrodes were designed in closely packed flower agave rosettes TiO2@C (FRTO@C anode) and vertical-star-tower LiFePO4@C (VST@C cathode) building blocks to regulate the electron/ion movement in the three-dimensional axes and orientation pathways. The superpower hierarchy surfaces and multi-directional orientation components may create isosurface potential electrodes with mobile electron movements, in-to-out interplay electron dominances, and electron/charge cloud distributions. This study is the first to evaluate the hotkeys of choice anode/cathode architectonics to assemble different LIB-electrode platforms with high-mobility electron/ion flows and high-performance capacity functionalities. Density functional theory calculation revealed that the FRTO@C anode and VST-(i)@C cathode architectonics are a superior choice for the configuration of full-scale LIB built-up models. The integrated FRTO@C//VST-(i)@C full-scale LIB retains a huge discharge capacity (~ 94.2%), an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.85% after 2000 cycles at 1 C, and a high energy density of 127 Wh kg-1, thereby satisfying scale-up commercial EV requirements.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To devise a rapid, sensitive method to quantify tactile threshold of finger pads for early detection and staging of peripheral neuropathy and for use in clinical trials. METHODS: Subjects were 166 healthy controls and 103 patients with, or at risk for, peripheral neuropathy. Subjects were screened by questionnaire. The test device, the Bumps, is a checkerboard-like smooth surface with 12 squares; each square encloses 5 colored circles. The subject explores the circles of each square with the index finger pad to locate the one circle containing a small bump. Bumps in different squares have different heights. Detection threshold is defined as the smallest bump height detected. In some subjects, a 3-mm skin biopsy from the tested finger pad was taken to compare density of Meissner corpuscles (MCs) to bump detection thresholds. RESULTS: The mean (±SEM) bump detection threshold for control subjects was 3.3 ± 0.10 µm. Threshold and test time were age related, older subjects having slightly higher thresholds and using more time. Mean detection threshold of patients with neuropathy (6.2 ± 0.35 µm) differed from controls (p < 0.001). A proposed threshold for identifying impaired sensation had a sensitivity of 71% and specificity of 74%. Detection threshold was higher when MC density was decreased. CONCLUSIONS: These preliminary studies suggest that the Bumps test is a rapid, sensitive, inexpensive method to quantify tactile sensation of finger pads. It has potential for early diagnosis of tactile deficiency in subjects suspected of having neuropathy, for staging degree of tactile deficit, and for monitoring change over time.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Autonomic neuropathy is a frequent diagnosis for the gastrointestinal symptoms or postural hypotension experienced by patients with longstanding diabetes. However, neuropathologic evidence to substantiate the diagnosis is limited. We hypothesized that quantification of nerves in gastric mucosa would confirm the presence of autonomic neuropathy. METHODS: Mucosal biopsies from the stomach antrum and fundus were obtained during endoscopy from 15 healthy controls and 13 type 1 diabetic candidates for pancreas transplantation who had secondary diabetic complications affecting the eyes, kidneys, and nerves, including a diagnosis of gastroparesis. Neurologic status was evaluated by neurologic examination, nerve conduction studies, and skin biopsy. Biopsies were processed to quantify gastric mucosal nerves and epidermal nerves. RESULTS: Gastric mucosal nerves from diabetic subjects had reduced density and abnormal morphology compared to control subjects (p < 0.05). The horizontal and vertical meshwork pattern of nerve fibers that normally extends from the base of gastric glands to the basal lamina underlying the epithelial surface was deficient in diabetic subjects. Eleven of the 13 diabetic patients had residual food in the stomach after overnight fasting. Neurologic abnormalities on clinical examination were found in 12 of 13 diabetic subjects and nerve conduction studies were abnormal in all patients. The epidermal nerve fiber density was deficient in skin biopsies from diabetic subjects. CONCLUSIONS: In this observational study, gastric mucosal nerves were abnormal in patients with type 1 diabetes with secondary complications and clinical evidence of gastroparesis. Gastric mucosal biopsy is a safe, practical method for histologic diagnosis of gastric autonomic neuropathy.

RESUMO

IFN-gamma, a Th1 cytokine was quantitatively estimated using EASIA in the sera of patients with different stages of schistosomiasis mansoni autoimmune diseases and schistosomal arthropathy. Level of IFN-gamma was significantly elevated in all the test groups compared to the control group. The highest level of IFN-gamma observed was in RA and SLE, with insignificant statistical difference (P > 0.05) between them. Cases with early S. mansoni infection showed significant higher level (P < 0.05) of IFN-gamma compared to hepatosplenic schistosomiasis with and without ascites. A significant statistical difference (P < 0.05) concerning IFN-gamma level was observed when comparing RA and SLE to different stages of S. mansoni infection and schistosomal arthropathy. This might lead to a conclusion that IFN-gamma estimation in sera of patients having joint complaint could be a good marker for differentiation between autoimmune collagen induced arthritis and schistosomiasis induced arthropathy.

RESUMO

Seventy-six patients with extensive pityriasis versicolor were divided into 3 groups and treated orally with ketoconazole, 200 mg daily, for 10, 20 or 30 days respectively. 50 patients out of this number completed the study. After 6 months, 46 patients were checked up. Eight of them developed relapses effectively treated with ketoconazole for another 15 days. Six out of these 8 patients belonged to the first group using ketoconazole for 20 days only. On the basis of this observation, we do not consider a 10 days' treatment to be sufficient and recommend that the patient should be treated for at least 20 days. As a preventive measure we recommend a daily bath with salicylic acid and sulphur soap. The frequency of the infection was higher in males (71.4%) than in females (28.6%). The youngest of the male patients was 4 months of age and the oldest 70 years. The youngest female was 4 months old and the oldest 50 years. Pityriasis versicolor was found to be predominant in the age group of 21--30 years. The sites most commonly involved were back, chest and the upper extremities.

RESUMO

The proportion of T lymphocyte populations was assessed using monoclonal antibodies (OKT3, OKT4, OKT8) and spontaneous E-rosette tests with SRBC (for total and active TE cells) in 36 patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis subdivided according to the clinical variety. The T cell profile was normal in patients with simple cutaneous leishmaniasis of early ulcerative type whereas active TE cells and OKT4 positive cells were reduced in some cases of late ulcerative type. A significant reduction of active TE cells and of OKT4 positive cells (helper/inducer phenotype) and increase of OKT8 positive cells (suppressor/cytotoxic phenotype) was observed in peripheral blood of all patients with persistent active lesions and leishmaniasis recidivans. In patients with highly ulcerated persistent lesions a low proportion of active TE cells was also demonstrated in cellular extracts from dermal tissue. The results support the data obtained in experimental leishmaniasis that lack of helper/inducer cells and generation of suppressor T cells may be responsible for the development of chronic leishmaniasis.

RESUMO

A clinical picture of familial continual peeling of the skin is described and discussed together with light and ultramicroscopic manifestations in one of the probands. The pattern of splitting distinguishes this condition from keratolysis exfoliativa. The ultramicroscopy exhibited mainly predominance of low-density keratocytes in the corneal layer, abnormalities in distribution of lamellar granules and disrupted coating of the cells in the intercellular spaces of the corneal layer.

RESUMO

Four cases of tyrosinaemia with cutaneous manifestations, but without ocular involvement, are reported in a family with consanguineous parents. The tyrosine levels in the serum and in the urine were normal in both parents, while in the offsprings the tyrosine levels were elevated 7 1/2-13 times in the serum and 3-13 times in the urine. Although the serum tyrosine levels in our cases were higher than most of the cases reported in the literature the eyes of all our patients were normal. The skin manifestations were very impressive, and varying degrees of mental retardation were present in all patients. The patients put on a low-protein diet improved considerably and have been kept symptom-free for 1 1/2 years. The possible implication of the discrepancy between the high serum levels and lack of ocular changes is discussed. Our results suggest that the Richner-Hanhart syndrome may include more than one distinct biochemical entity.
