RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated the Botswana Presidential Task Force, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MoHW), to devise strategies to utilize the already overburdened health personnel to combat the spread of the coronavirus. This descriptive case study aimed to describe nurses' role during COVID-19 in Botswana. DESIGN AND METHODS: A case study analysis was used to describe nurses' roles during COVID-19. Data were collected through observing events in various health facilities and various media platforms that described how nurses had to position themselves to combat the pandemic. Content analysis was done by coding and developing categories that put like content together and generate thematic areas. RESULTS: Nurses from different sectors were redeployed to assist in setting up different units at the COVID-19 makeshift hospital, taking away from the already understaffed section of health care workers resulting in the overburden and work overload. Furthermore, nurses continued with their regular day-to-day nursing care duties in various healthcare settings, albeit under a severe shortage due to the national response to COVID-19. CONCLUSION: Adaptations and experiential strategies enabled the distribution of the nursing workforce to cover all locations to curb the spread of COVID-19 despite the challenges encountered. Recommendations and lessons learned on how to prepare for future pandemics are also discussed. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Due to their large numbers, nurses formed the backbone of the Botswana COVID-19 response strategy. Therefore, policy-makers should be responsive to the nurses' perspectives when developing strategic policies on how to deal with pandemics based on their experiences.

RESUMO

Background: Caregivers; when providing care under the community home-based care (CHBC) programme; experience many burdens of a physical; emotional; financial or social nature. However; these problems are hardly ever considered by the planners of CHBC programmes. A comprehensive overview of the experiences of caregivers is desirable to help policy makers and public health planners formulate intervention measures to address caregivers' burdens. Methods: The sample size calculator programme that allows for 95 confidence (and an error margin of 4) was used: the estimated sample size for the study was 272. This number was derived from the eight sampled CHBC groups using probability proportional to size. Simple random sampling was employed in identifying the specific caregivers to be interviewed. Questionnaires were administered on this selected sample at their homes or CHBC headquarters by trained research assistants who ensured that all ethical considerations were observed. In the end; 169 caregivers responded within the study period. Results: The study shows that very little support is given to caregivers. In addition; while men's burdens are mainly economic; those of women are overwhelmingly emotional. Furthermore; there is an insignificant association between caregivers' expected and received support while providing care to people living with HIV/AIDS. Conclusion: The study concludes that; to reduce caregivers' burdens; a comprehensive CHBC programme; that will ensure that the role of CHBC caregivers is adequately recognised by the government and community; is needed

RESUMO

A Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenological approach was used to investigate the lived experience of women in Botswana who had experienced emotional abuse in intimate relationships. Hermeneutic phenomenology is concerned with the human experience as it is lived. Ten educated Botswana women who had formal employment and have been in intimate relationships for longer than ten years, narrated their life experiences with abusive men. Extensive interviews took place over a six month period. Sociocultural practices in Botswana emerged as salient factors that contribute to emotional abuse and predispose women to mental illness. Entwined in these cultural practices are issues of age, ethnicity, payment of lobola (bride price), financial standing, change of name, and relocation to the man's residence. Education and employment seem to worsen the abuse. Depression and anxiety are common results of abuse. Understanding how the sociocultural factors perpetuate abuse can assist nurses in the way they provide health care services to women.

RESUMO

The presence of sexual abuse among societies in Botswana is a phenomenon whose occurrence is usually denied albeit the police report on it and legal frameworks have been established to combat it. Several factors influence the concealment of sexual abuse among adolescent girls, which includes cultural factors and social status of the perpetrators. This paper espouses the concept of sexual abuse among adolescent girls, the existence of the problem, its magnitude, the factors that increase vulnerability to violence and abuse, and how these factors intersect with HIV and AIDS. Two case studies using a discovery method were used to explore the phenomenon under the study. The findings of the study indicated that sexual abuse and violence have profound mental health consequences including guilt, anxiety, depression and anger. Future research is suggested to explore this problem on a wider scale and develop interventions that can assist victims and perpetrators to cope with the situation.

RESUMO

HIV and AIDS are a major problem in Botswana. Studies have revealed that they have mostly affected young people, most of whom will have been infected with HIV during their teenage years. The prevalence among young people aged 15-24 is 16.9% and 6.6% among adolescents aged 15-19 years. It is therefore crucial to examine perceived contextual factors that influence adolescents living with HIV and AIDS, the risks that they encounter, and the behaviors that they use to reduce such risks. A qualitative exploratory descriptive design will be used to describe the HIV and AIDS knowledge risk and protective factors in general and sexual factors in particular of adolescents living with HIV and AIDS. Focus group discussions and individual in-depth interviews will be conducted among female and male adolescents aged 13 to 19 years. Content analysis will be utilized.
