RESUMO

The 400 Years of Inequality Project was created to call organizations to observe the 400th anniversary of the first Africans landing in Jamestown in 1619. The project focused on the broad ramifications of inequality. Used as a justification of chattel slavery, structures of inequality continue to condition the lives of many groups in the US. Over 110 organizations joined this observance and held 150 events. The highlight of the year was the homily given by Reverend William Barber II, co-chair of the Poor People's Campaign, who described the "seven sins" that link the concept of inequality to every aspect of national life, from politics to militia. These "seven sins" help us to analyze and address crises, such as the COVID pandemic.

RESUMO

Person-centered care has yet to be widely implemented in health care settings, a circumstance that disproportionately affects individuals with behavioral health disorders and those with trauma histories. A need exists for a universal approach to care that encompasses compassionate, collaborative relationships between providers and service users. Person-centered care, enhanced by recovery-oriented care and trauma-informed care, forms the basis for a universal approach to health care. For this paper, we adopted a modified Delphi method to establish consensus on a set of basic principles and practices for developing a universal design based on these three frameworks. We used a two-stage process to arrive at guidelines for use in health and human service settings by: 1) convening an expert panel to draft guidelines; and 2) conducting an online survey of multidisciplinary experts to refine the guidelines. We conclude with recommendations for implementation.

RESUMO

This article tracks the conjunction between the social, cultural, political, and economic changes taking place on a global level and the shift in sexuality research from primarily biomedical and behavioral concerns to those of rights and social justice. Particular attention is paid to how transnational public health and human rights discourses, and social movements concerned with gender inequality and the oppression of sexual minorities, have influenced the field of sexuality research. This influence is especially clear in the emergence of the concepts of sexual health and sexual rights, which have enabled researchers to draw clear connections between highly localized phenomena and transnational systems. The importance of rights-based approaches, in particular, has supported an explicit politicization of research and the engagement of researchers in social justice causes. To illustrate the interests and approach of contemporary sexuality research, the article includes a review of recent literature on sex trafficking and same-sex marriage. These cases are used to outline the negative and positive use of rights-the former a means to control harm and the latter a means to advance freedoms. Addressing the tension between these two strategies is a core challenge for the field of sexuality research.
