RESUMO

In spite of the prevalence of temporary rivers over a wide range of climatic conditions, they represent a relatively understudied fraction of the global river network. Here, we exploit a well-established hydrological model and a derived distribution approach to develop a coupled probabilistic description for the dynamics of the catchment discharge and the corresponding active network length. Analytical expressions for the flow duration curve (FDC) and the stream length duration curve (SLDC) were derived and used to provide a consistent classification of streamflow and active length regimes in temporary rivers. Two distinct streamflow regimes (persistent and erratic) and three different types of active length regimes (ephemeral, perennial, and ephemeral de facto) were identified depending on the value of two dimensionless parameters. These key parameters, which are related to the underlying streamflow fluctuations and the sensitivity of active length to changes in the catchment discharge (here quantified by the scaling exponent b), originate seven different behavioral classes characterized by contrasting shapes of the underlying SLDCs and FDCs. The analytical model was tested using data gathered in three study catchments located in Italy and USA, with satisfactory model performances in most cases. Our analytical and empirical results show the existence of a structural relationship between streamflow and active length regimes, which is chiefly modulated by the scaling exponent b. The proposed framework represents a promising tool for the coupled analysis of discharge and river network length dynamics in temporary streams.

Looking across a landscape, river networks appear deceptively static. However, flowing streams expand and contract following ever-changing hydrological conditions of the surrounding environment. Despite the ecological and biogeochemical value of rivers with discontinuous flow, deciphering the temporary nature of streams and quantifying their extent remains challenging. Using a unique observational dataset spanning diverse geomorphoclimatic settings, we demonstrate the existence of a general hierarchical structuring of river network dynamics. Specifically, temporary stream activation follows a fixed and repeatable sequence, in which the least persistent sections activate only when the most persistent ones are already flowing. This hierarchical phenomenon not only facilitates monitoring activities, but enables the development of a general mathematical framework that elucidates how climate drives temporal variations in the active stream length. As the climate gets drier, the average fraction of the flowing network decreases while its relative variability increases. Our study provides a novel conceptual basis for characterizing temporary streams and quantifying their ecological and biogeochemical impacts.

Understanding the expansion and contraction dynamics of flowing drainage networks is important for many research fields like ecology, hydrology, and biogeochemistry. This study analyzes for the first time the network shrinking and dry down in two seasonally dry hot-summer Mediterranean catchments (overall area 1.15 km2) using a comprehensive approach based on monitoring and modeling of the flowing network. A field campaign consisting of 19 subweekly visual surveys was carried out in the early summer of 2019. These observations were used to calibrate and validate an integrated model aimed to estimate the time evolution of the total flowing drainage network length based on meteorological drivers and define the position of the stretches with flowing water based on topographic and geological information. We used a statistical model to describe the observed variations in the total flowing length based on the accumulated difference between antecedent precipitation and evapotranspiration. The study emphasizes the relevant role of evapotranspiration in the seasonal network contraction. Then, we modeled spatial patterns of the flowing channels using an empirical approach based on topographic data, achieving satisfactory performances. Nevertheless, the performance further increased when site-specific geological information was integrated into the model, leading to accuracies up to 92% for cell-by-cell comparisons. The proposed methodology, which combines meteorological, topographic, and geological information in a sequential manner, was able to accurately represent the space-time dynamics of the flowing drainage network in the study area, proving to be an effective and flexible tool for investigating network dynamics in temporary streams.

The summer of 2017 in the Calabria Region (South Italy) was an exceptional wildfire season with the largest area burned by wildfires in the last 11 years (2008-2019). The equivalent black carbon (EBC) and carbon monoxide (CO) measurements, recorded at the high-altitude Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) Monte Curcio (MCU) regional station, were analyzed to establish the wildfires' impact on air quality, human health, and the ecosystem. A method was applied to identify the possible wildfires that influenced the air quality based on the integration of fire data (both satellite and ground-based) and the high-resolution WRF-HYSPLIT trajectories. The satellite-based fires applied to WRF-HYSPLIT with 10 km of spatial resolution allowed us to establish that for 52.5% of total cases, wildfires were located outside the Calabria Region, and they were influenced by long-range transport. Nonetheless, the impact on human health, qualitatively evaluated in terms of passively smoked cigarettes (PSC) corresponding to the EBC, was greater when wildfires were local. Indeed, for wildfires located mainly in Calabria, the equivalent PSC ranged from 2.75 to 11.08. This maximum PSC value was close to the daily number of smoked cigarettes in Calabria (approximately 12.4). Even if this analogy does not imply a proportional effect between the estimated number of cigarettes smoked and the effective wildfire EBC exposure, this result suggests that wildfire emissions may have negative effects on people's health. Moreover, a focus on the Calabria Region was conducted using high-resolution ground-based GPS and higher resolution WRF-HYSPLIT back-trajectories (2 km) to measure wildfires. The validity of the methodology was confirmed by the EBC and CO positive correlation with the ratio between the identified ground-based burned areas and the distance from the sampling station. Moreover, the impact on the ecosystem was studied by analyzing the land vegetation loss due to the wildfires that contributed to air quality reduction at the MCU station. A total of more than 1679 ha of vegetation burned, the main losses comprising forests and shrubland.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the relationship between retinal vascularization and macular function in patients with cone dystrophies (CDs). METHODS: Twenty CD patients (40 eyes) and 20 healthy controls (20 eyes) were enrolled in this prospective case-control study. Patients underwent full ophthalmological examination, microperimetry, full-field, pattern and multifocal electroretinogram (ERG, PERG, mfERG) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Main outcome measures were as follows: foveal and parafoveal inner and outer retinal thickness; microperimetry sensitivity in the central 4° and 8°, ERG b wave amplitudes and peak times, PERG P50 and N95 amplitudes and latencies, and mfERG N1 to P1 amplitudes; and superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP) and choriocapillary (CC) plexus vessel densities, divided into foveal and parafoveal region. RESULTS: Retinal thickness, SCP and DCP densities were significantly related to PERG. A significant relationship was found between foveal and parafoveal retinal thicknesses and foveal SCP density (p < 0.001 and p = 0.018, respectively) and between parafoveal retinal thickness and parafoveal SCP density (p = 0.002). Foveal and parafoveal retinal thicknesses were significantly related to parafoveal DCP density (p = 0.007 and p < 0.001). Foveal and parafoveal retinal thicknesses, foveal SCP and parafoveal DPC densities were significantly reduced in CD patients compared to controls (p < 0.001; p = 0.010 and p = 0.008, respectively). PERG and mfERG amplitudes were significantly reduced in CD patients compared to controls (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: CD eyes showed reduced retinal thickness significantly related to reduced vessel density, possibly caused by a decreased metabolic demand. In addition, vessel density significantly correlated with loss of function.

(1) Background: To evaluate superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP), choriocapillaris (CC), perfusion density (PD), and vessel length density (VLD) in macular and near/mid periphery regions in patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) using widefield swept source optical coherence tomography angiography (WSS-OCTA). (2) Methods: Twelve RP patients (20 eyes) and 20 age-matched subjects (20 eyes) were imaged with the SS-OCTA system (PLEX Elite 9000, Carl Zeiss Meditec Inc., Dublin, CA, USA). Quantitative analysis was performed in the macular and peripheral regions. The main outcome measures were SCP, DCP, CC, PD, and VLD in central and peripheral areas. (3) Results: Mean visual acuity, central macular thickness, and microperimetry were significantly reduced in RP patients compared to normal subjects (p < 0.05). The perfusion density and VLD of SCP, DCP, and CC were significantly reduced in RP patients compared to normal controls both in the central and peripheral retina (p < 0.05). A significant direct correlation was found in RP patients between PD of the 1.5 mm central retina both in DCP and CC and microperimetry at 4° and 8°. (4) Conclusions: Widefield SS-OCTA shows an impairment of retinal and choroidal perfusion density and vessel length density in central and peripheral retina of RP patients. The reduction of flow features correlates with the macular function.

AIM: To investigate the efficacy and safety of ranibizumab (RZB group) and dexamethasone implant (DEX group) intravitreal treatments in patients with treatment-naïve center involved diabetic macular edema (DME) by means of functional and morphological assessments. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 50 eyes of 50 patients with DME treated either with RBZ or DEX. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and microperimetry were evaluated at baseline and during a 6-month follow-up. In addition, central macular thickness (CMT) by means of structural optical coherence tomography (OCT) and retinal capillary plexus density and choriocapillary density by means of OCT angiography were assessed in all cases. RESULTS: Functional and morphological parameters significantly improved during the study period in both groups. BCVA improved significantly in both groups with a greater increase in the DEX group compared to the RBZ group (P=0.030). Microperimetry significantly differed during follow-up between the two treatments (P=0.031). In both groups CMT significantly decreased (P<0.001) without statistically significant differences between the two groups. A statistically significant increase of deep capillary plexus density was detected in both groups at 30d after therapy. The retreatment rate was 0.70±0.10 and 0.65±0.10 in the RBZ group and 0.65±0.10 and 0.50±0.11 in DEX group at 120 and 180d respectively. Two out of 25 patients in DEX group showed intraocular pressure increase requiring hypotonic eye drops. CONCLUSION: Both treatments are very effective for DME treatment during 6mo of follow-up with a lower retreatment rate in DEX group.

The aim of this work was to characterize the choriocapillaris (CC) in patients with Stargardt disease (STGD) using the swept source widefield optical coherence tomography angiography (SS WF OCTA) and to compare CC perfusion density to retinal sensitivity, analyzed using microperimetry (MP). This cross-sectional study included 9 patients (18 eyes) with STGD and central CC atrophy (stage 3 STGD). The CC was analyzed using SS WF OCTA and areas of different CC impairment were quantified and correlated with retinal sensitivity analyzed using MP. The main outcome measures were the percent perfused choriocapillaris area (PPCA), retinal sensitivity, and correlation between PPCA and retinal sensitivity. Seventeen eyes of 9 patients suffering from stage 3 STGD were analyzed. SS WF OCTA revealed a vascular rarefaction in central atrophic zones and a near atrophy halo of choriocapillaris impairment. In all eyes were noticed a central atrophy (CA) area with absolute absence of CC that corresponded to 0 dB points at MP, a near atrophy (NA) zone of PPCA impairment that included points with decreased sensitivity at MP and a distant from atrophy (DA) zone with higher PPCA and retinal sensitivity values. The mean difference of PPCA and retinal sensitivity between NA and CA and DA and CA was statistical significantly different (p < 0.01), the latter showing higher values. A direct relationship between PPCA and retinal sensitivity was found (p < 0.001). Choriocapillaris damage evaluated using SS WF OCTA correlates with MP, these data suggest that CC impairment may be a predictor of retinal function in patients with STGD.

PURPOSE: To investigate the scleral and conjunctival features in patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) undergoing scleral buckling (SB), using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) and in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM). METHODS: Twenty RRD eyes were consecutively enrolled. AS-OCT was performed at RRD diagnosis (RRD-D) and day 1, week 1, month 1 and month 6 after SB to evaluate the sclera, in the affected and unaffected quadrants (AQ, UQ). IVCM was performed at RRD-D, and at month 1 and month 6, to evaluate the conjunctiva in AQ and UQ. The main outcomes were as follows: mean intra-scleral hypo-reflective spaces area (MIHSA) at AS-OCT; mean density and area of microcysts (MMD, MMA) at IVCM; and intra-ocular pressure (IOP). The relations between MIHSA, MMA, MMD and IOP were evaluated. RESULTS: Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment- diagnosis (RRD-D) overall-mean intra-scleral hypo-reflective spaces (MISHA), -MMD and -MMA were significantly higher in affected eye (AE) compared with UE (p < 0.05) and in AQ compared with UQ (p < 0.05). After SB, overall-, AQ- and UQ-MISHA further increased (p < 0.05), whereas overall-MMD and -MMA did not change. At all follow-up, AQ and UQ parameters did not show significant differences between them. RRD-D IOP was 14.3 ± 2.8 and 15.5 ± 2.7 mmHg in the AE and UE, respectively (p < 0.05). After SB, week-1, month-1 and -6 IOP was significantly lower than RRD-D (p < 0.05). Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment- diagnosis (RRD-D), 1- and 6-month overall and AQ-MISHA and AQ-MMD negatively correlated with IOP (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) and SB induced scleral and conjunctival changes that suggested an activation of fluid outflow through the entire unconventional aqueous humour pathway; these modifications may in part account for the relative hypotony after RRD and SB.

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between perfusion of the choriocapillaris (CC) and macular function in eyes with intermediate age-related macular degeneration. Methods: In this prospective, observational, cross-sectional study, macular optical coherence tomography angiography images and multifocal electroretinograms were obtained in 20 eyes with intermediate age-related macular degeneration from 20 patients. The main outcome measures were (1) the percent nonperfused choriocapillaris area (PNPCA), which represents a measure of the total area of CC vascular dropout, and (2) the average size of the CC signal voids, which represent contiguous regions of CC dropout. Furthermore, amplitude and implicit time of multifocal electroretinograms N1 and P1 waves in the two central rings (R1 and R2) were included in the analysis. Results: Of the 20 patients enrolled, only 17 eyes from 17 patients (13 women) were included in this analysis. Three patients were excluded because of poor scan quality. Mean ± SD age was 75.1 ± 7.9 years (range, 62-89 years). The best corrected visual acuity was 0.17 ± 0.13 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution. In univariate analysis, both the PNPCA and average signal void size were found to have a significant direct relationship with N1 implicit time in the R2 ring (P = 0.006 and P = 0.035, respectively). Neither PNPCA nor the average signal void size was associated with P1 or N1 implicit times in R1. Conclusions: In intermediate age-related macular degeneration eyes, PNPCA and average signal void size are related to N1 multifocal electroretinogram implicit times, which suggests an association between CC perfusion and photoreceptor function.

PURPOSE: To report clinical features of Susac's syndrome (SS) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A 25-year-old Caucasian female with a history of non-pulsatile migraine, tinnitus, and verbal apraxia complaining of peripheral scotoma in left eye due to branch retinal arteriole occlusion (BRAO) was diagnosed as having SS after audiometric test, brain magnetic resonance imaging, and multimodal retinal imaging. Fundus biomicroscopy and fluorescein angiography (FA) revealed the presence of retinal ischemia in the area of BRAO. The OCTA images showed decreased vascular perfusion of both superficial and deep plexuses in the area of the occluded arteriole with increase of vascular density values after treatment with intravenous glucocorticoids, cyclophosphamide, and aspirin. CONCLUSIONS: OCTA offers a valid alternative to the standard invasive FA, evaluating vascular perfusion in all capillary plexuses, and monitoring retinal microvascular flow changes during the course of BRAO, without dye injection.

PURPOSE: To investigate radial peripapillary capillary (RPC) network in patients affected by retinitis pigmentosa (RP). METHODS: Eleven patients (22 eyes) with previous diagnosis of RP and 16 age-matched healthy subjects (16 eyes) were enrolled. The diagnosis of RP was made based on both clinical features and electrophysiological examination. All patients underwent a complete ophthalmologic examination, including optical coherence tomography angiography and visual field (VF). The primary outcomes were the RPC vessel density in the peripapillary and disk areas; the secondary outcomes were the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and the mean defect at VF. RESULTS: A total of 19 eyes of 11 RP patients (5 males, 6 females) and 16 eyes of 16 healthy subjects (10 males, 6 females) were included for the analysis. RPC vessel density in the disk area was 46.5 ± 7.1% in the RP group and 45.4 ± 10.6% in the control group (p = 0.754). RPC vessel density in the peripapillary area was significantly reduced in the RP group after the comparison with the control group (52.5 ± 5.0 and 57.2 ± 5.1%, respectively, p = 0.011). RNFL thickness was 85.9 ± 20.4 µm in the RP group and 104.0 ± 6.4 µm in the control group (p = 0.002). RPC vessel density was significantly correlated with RNFL thickness values in RP patients, both in the disk and in the peripapillary area (Rho = 0.599 and p = 0.007 in the disk area, Rho = 0.665 and p = 0.002 in the peripapillary area, respectively). CONCLUSION: We showed that density of RPC is reduced in these patients in the peripapillary area. Moreover, the RPC vessel density correlates with the RNFL thickness.

BACKGROUND: to assess vessel density of superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP) and choriocapillaris (CC) in advanced Stargardt disease (STGD) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and correlate these findings with macular function using pattern electroretinogram (PERG) and multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG). METHODS: Twelve patients (24 eyes) with advanced STGD underwent vessel densities and macular thickness measurements using OCTA. A control group of 24 healthy controls (24 eyes) was chosen for comparison. In the STGD group correlation between vessel density and macular thickness and between macular function and morphologic parameters were evaluated. RESULTS: Whole parafoveal vessel density (VD) of SCP was significantly lower in STGD group compared to the control group (p<0.05). Foveal VD and whole parafoveal VD of the DCP were significantly lower in STGD group compared to the controls (p<0.05). CC was significantly decreased in STGD compared to controls (p<0.05). Foveal macular thickness (MT), full parafoveal MT, and inner limiting membrane (ILM)-inner plexiform layer (IPL) parafoveal MT thickness were decreased in STGD eyes compared to controls (p<0.001). PERG and mfERG were both significantly reduced in STGD compared to controls (p<0.001). A direct correlation was found between full parafoveal MT and vessel density in the STGD group. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with advanced STGD showed a reduction of SCP, DCP and CC compared to healthy eyes related to a reduction of total and ILM-IPL macular thickness. These results suggest that both retinal capillaris plexuses and choriocapillaris reduction occur in STDG along with inner and outer retinal thinning.

The aim of this study was to evaluate retinal and choriocapillaris vessel density using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in eyes with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) and branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) complicated by macular edema (ME). Sixty eyes of 60 patients with CRVO or BRVO and ME and 40 healthy subjects underwent measurements of superficial and deep foveal and parafoveal vessel density (FVD, PFVD) and choricapillary density using OCTA at baseline and 60 days after intravitreal dexamethasone implant (IVDEX). FVD and PFVD of the superficial plexus were not significantly lower in CRVO group compared to the controls while in the BRVO group overall PFVD were significantly lower compared to control group (p < 0.001). Overall PFVD of the deep plexus was significantly lower in CRVO and BRVO groups compared to the control group (p < 0.001). FVD and overall PFVD of choriocapillaris were significantly reduced compared to controls in CRVO group (p < 0.001) and PFVD of choriocapillaris was significantly reduced compared to controls in the affected hemi fields in BRVO groups (p < 0.001). OCTA showed vessel density reduction in BRVO and CRVO with main involvement of the deep retinal plexus compared to the superficial retinal plexus due to ischemia that did not recover after intravitreal dexamethasone implant.

Purpose: To investigate correlations among macular ganglion cell complex (GCC) layer thickness, macular capillary density, and macular function in patients affected by retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Methods: Fourteen patients (28 eyes) with previous diagnosis of RP were enrolled. The diagnosis of these conditions was made based on both clinical features and electrophysiological examination. All patients underwent a complete ophthalmologic examination, including optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG). Main outcome measures were macular GCC layer thickness; superficial capillary plexus (SCP) vessel density; deep capillary plexus (DCP) vessel density; choriocapillaris plexus (CCP) vessel density; and amplitudes of mfERG N1 and P1 waves. Results: Average GCC thickness was significantly thinner in RP patients (76.0 ± 25.1 and 109.2 ± 17.5 µm, P = 0.028). Superficial capillary plexus density was 42.2 ± 3.4% in the RP group and 51.4 ± 2.3% in the control group (P < 0.001). Deep capillary plexus density was reduced in RP patients (42.7 ± 6.2%) after the comparison with healthy subjects (56.6 ± 2.2%, P < 0.001). Choriocapillaris plexus density was significantly less in RP patients than in the control group (65.3 ± 2.7% and 67.2 ± 1.4%, P = 0.024). Superficial capillary plexus and DCP density were significantly correlated with both mfERG values and GCC thickness. Conclusions: We showed that both choroid and retinal vessels were modified in RP patients after comparison with healthy subjects. Moreover, we demonstrated that the SCP and DCP vessel densities are correlated with the macular function, as well as with the GCC thickness.
