RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The cultural and language diversity across many European countries presents a range of challenges and opportunities for speech and language therapists and other practitioners working with children with developmental language disorders (DLD) and their families. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore practitioners' perceptions of cultural and linguistic differences in response to children with DLD across different countries. METHODS: A survey was developed by practitioners and researchers working with children with DLD across Europe and beyond as part of the work of Cost Action IS1406. Data from 1,358 practitioners from 8 European countries - Ireland, UK, Bulgaria, Poland, Croatia, Spain, Norway and Sweden - and 2 neighbour countries - Turkey and Lebanon - were included in the present analyses, which address two groups of questions. The first focuses on practitioners' perceptions of the way that parents think about cultural differences and their relationship to language development in their children. The second concerns the extent to which practitioners consider themselves to have the skills to work with children from other cultures and using different languages. RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS: Most countries present a similar profile with intermediate results about their perception of cultural issues, but Lebanon and Turkey are the group with the most positive responses. In terms of bilingual issues most practitioners indicated that they only worked in their country's primary language. The only country where this was not the case was Lebanon. Professionals from Spain and Lebanon form a subgroup in terms of their confidence to work with different cultural/language groups. The paper highlights both the universal importance of cultural and linguistic competence in managing young children's needs and indicates that in most cases professionals do not think they have the necessary expertise to work with cultural and linguistic diversity.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The study was aimed to evaluate the physiopathological consideration of the effects of electromagnetic field (EMF) from the radiation of 4.5 G mobile phones on the liver tissue of rats and quercetin (Qu) applied as an antioxidant for reducing these effects. METHODS: Male Wistar-Albino rats were divided into four groups with 8 rats in each group. Group 1 (control group), Group 2 (sham group), Group 3 (EMF group) and Group 4 (EMF + Qu). From the animals sacrificed at the end of the 30th day; liver tissues were taken for histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations. RESULTS: In the liver tissue of the electromagnetic field group; dilatation of sinusitis was determined to be higher than in the sham group. It was concluded that the concentration of caspase-3 and TNF-α immunopositive cells was in the EMF group (+3) level and also the immunostaining was stronger, it caused an increase in malondialdehyde level, the difference between the groups was statistically significant, in terms of superoxide dismutase, catalase activities, the difference was not significant. CONCLUSION: It was determined that 2600 MHz EMF exposure caused damage to the liver, 100 mg/kg/day quercetin was not sufficient to prevent this damage (Tab. 5, Fig. 15, Ref. 27).

RESUMO

This study investigated the long-term effects of electric fields (EF) which might cause physiopathological or morphological changes in the testis tissues of rats. We assumed that using resveratrol (RES) might reduce harmful effects of the EF. Thirty-two male Wistar Albino rats were randomly divided into four groups with eight animals in each; control, EF, EF + RES and RES. Malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and histopathological parameters were evaluated in testis tissue. Epididymal sperm count, motility and DNA damage were studied. Total testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinising hormone, estradiol and growth hormone levels were evaluated in the plasma samples. EF caused statistically significant increase in MDA levels, body weight and DNA damage. A significant decrease was detected in sperm count and motility. The histopathological examination of the testes showed the germ cell decrease in the seminiferous epithelium with oedema and vascular congestion in the interstitial tissue. In immunohistochemical examination, the increase in the apoptotic cells number was detected. RES partially ameliorated biochemical, histopathological and immunohistochemical findings in the EF + RES group. These findings clearly demonstrated that EF can cause damage in rat testis. RES can ameliorate the damage caused by EF.

RESUMO

The distribution and relative frequency of external taste buds (TB) of Garra rufa were studied. TB of Garra rufa were observed on different body location (lips, lateral and ventral areas, forehead, operculum and dorsal-pelvic-pectoral-anal fins). TB are at the highest frequency in lips, forehead, pectoral and anal fins. These structures are moderate as a number in operculum, La2 (between pelvic and anal fins) areas, and then decreased a few in other areas.

RESUMO

The wall of the digestive tract is composed of the tunica mucosa, tunica muscularis and tunica serosa. Lamina-submucosa separation or any glands were not observed in tunica mucosa. Goblet cells were determined to constitute a much larger reserve at digestive tract mucosa. Histochemical analysis of the intestine of flower fish (Pseudophoxinus antalyae) showed that gastrointestinal mucous content included sulphate-esters and/or carboxylic [Alcian blue (AB) 0.06+], glycogene and/or oxidable dioles [periodic acid/Schiff+ (PAS+)], neutral or acid-rich (PAS/AB pH 2.5+), sialic acid residues (KOH/PAS) and strong acid sulphated [Aldehyde fuchsin+ (AF+)] glycoproteins (GPs). Except these mucosubstances to lower densities, densely sulphate (AB pH 2.5+), O-sulphate esters (AB pH 1+) strong and weak sulphated (AB 0.3 M+), GPs were also determined.

RESUMO

Purpose of this study was to determine the distribution of external taste buds of flower fish (Pseudophoxinus antalyae) on different body locations (lip, lateral, ventral and dorsal areas, dorsal-pelvic-pectoral-anal fins). In this species, it was found that the density of taste buds was greater on lip epithelium than that of lateral (between pectoral-anal, anal-caudal fins), ventral (between pelvic and anal fins) and dorsal (close to the head) locations. It was observed that the shape of taste bud changed depending upon the epithelium thickness and it was found that some of these structures protruded towards to the exterior of epithelium.
