RESUMO

In this study, we developed a colorimetric ozone passive sampler (OPS) incorporating o-dianisidine, a redox dye, into a polydimethylsiloxane sheet. The reaction between ozone (O3) and o-dianisidine result in a visible yellowish color change. Unlike previous passive methods that rely on nitrate extraction or the color disappearance of indigotrisulfonate, the OPS offered improved recognition of average O3 exposure. To optimize OPS based on time-weighted average (TWA), we extracted and quantified the amount of reacted o-dianisidine after exposing OPS to O3 by varying concentrations (0-200 ppb) within 8 h. Colorimetric changes of OPS were further analyzed by capturing images, and the effective absorbance of blue scale showed the best fit (EAB, R2 =0.997). OPS validation on visual detection assessed by six parameters: limit of detection, limit of quantification, reproducibility, sampling rate, selectivity to interfering gases, and sensitivity to environmental factors. To enhance visibility, the OPS was assembled with coloration exposure guidelines, and a smartphone app was developed to quantify average O3 exposures. We further conducted field tests that showed the significant disparity between O3 concentrations and personal O3 exposures, which is considered more crucial for assessing health risks. The OPS was optimized to monitor O3 exposure levels and raise awareness among workers and occupants regarding invisible indoor hazards.

RESUMO

The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of polymer solar cells (PSCs) has recently reached >19% through the development of photoactive materials, particularly non-fullerene acceptors. Interfacial layers (ILs) have been another essential factor in optimizing device charge extraction. In this study, we propose a series of ILs, in which ionic iridium(III) (Ir(III)) complexes of different alkali metal cations (Li+, Na+, and K+) enhance the charge collection efficiency between zinc oxide and active layers through an induced internal electric field. The anionic coordinate sphere and counter-cations of the Ir(III) complexes are distributed according to the operating voltage of the PSCs, causing electric dipoles that enhance the internal electric field and charge collection efficiency. Ion species migration in the ILs is confirmed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The PCE of the PM6:Y6-based PSCs was improved from 14.0% to 15.6% by introducing an IL (Ir-K+). Furthermore, the stability of PSCs containing ionic Ir(III) complexes is enhanced significantly under ultraviolet (UV) light and AM 1.5 G one-sun irradiation owing to the intense UV absorption capacity and photo durability of the ILs. A device containing the Ir(III) complex-based ILs retained ∼60% of its initial PCE after UV irradiation, whereas the control device retained only ∼20%.

RESUMO

Fused aromatic rings are widely employed in organic solar cell (OSC) materials due to their planarity and rigidity. Here, we designed and synthesized four two-dimensional non-fullerene acceptors, D6-4F, D6-4Cl, DTT-4F, and DTT-4Cl, based on two new fused planar ring structures of f-DTBDT-C6 and f-DTTBDT. Owing to the desirable phase separation formed in the blend films and the higher energy levels induced by the extra alkyl groups, PM6:D6-4F-based devices achieved a high VOC = 0.91 V with PCE = 11.10%, FF = 68.54%, and JSC = 17.75 mA/cm2. Because of the longer π-conjugation of the f-DTTBDT core with nine fused rings, DTT-4F and DTT-4Cl showed high molar extinction coefficients and broad absorption bands that enhanced the current density of OSCs. Finally, the PM6:DTT-4F-based devices achieved a JSC = 19.82 mA/cm2 with PCE = 9.68%, VOC = 0.83 V, and FF = 58.85%.

RESUMO

Long-term exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and carbonyl compounds in beauty products may adversely impact the health of beauty salon technicians. Previous studies have focused on assessing indoor air concentrations of chemicals, such as benzene and toluene, and not on personal exposure concentrations. This study measured the indoor and personal exposure concentrations of VOCs and carbonyl compounds in fifty-three beauty salons in Korea. Non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks and sensitivity were analyzed using the Monte Carlo simulation technique. The indoor and personal exposure concentrations of acetone were 82.24 µg/m3 and 104.97 µg/m3, respectively, the highest among all measured chemicals. Beauty salon technicians who experienced adverse health effects had significantly higher concentrations of acetone, benzaldehyde, and toluene than those who did not experience adverse health effects (p-value < 0.05). The average hazard quotients of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were higher than the acceptable risk level (1), and the average cancer risks of formaldehyde exceeded the acceptable risk level (10-6). Wearing personal protective equipment was the most efficient risk reduction strategy for reducing the non-cancer risks of acetaldehyde and formaldehyde and the carcinogenic risks of formaldehyde. The results of this study can be used as a basis for reducing exposure to VOCs and carbonyl compounds among salon technicians.

RESUMO

Indoor microbiological air quality, including airborne bacteria and fungi, is associated with hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) and emerging as an environmental issue in hospital environment. Many studies have been carried out based on culture-based methods to evaluate bioaerosol level. However, conventional biomonitoring requires laborious process and specialists, and cannot provide data quickly. In order to assess the concentration of bioaerosol in real-time, particles were subdivided according to the aerodynamic diameter for surrogate measurement. Particle number concentration (PNC) and meteorological conditions selected by analyzing the correlation with bioaerosol were included in the prediction model, and the forecast accuracy of each model was evaluated by the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE). The prediction model for airborne bacteria demonstrated highly accurate prediction (R2 = 0.804, MAPE = 8.5%) from PNC1-3, PNC3-5, and PNC5-10 as independent variables. Meanwhile, the fungal prediction model showed reasonable, but weak, prediction results (R2 = 0.489, MAPE = 42.5%) with PNC3-5, PNC5-10, PNC > 10, and relative humidity. As a result of external verification, even when the model was applied in a similar hospital environment, the bioaerosol concentration could be sufficiently predicted. The prediction model constructed in this study can be used as a pre-assessment method for monitoring microbial contamination in indoor environments.

RESUMO

Facilities for sensitive populations have increased in Korea; and its indoor air quality (IAQ) was strictly regulated by the Korean government compared to other facilities. However, merely public facilities on certain level of total floor area were lawfully regulated. This study aims to characterize the indoor environment at facilities for sensitive populations in Korea and investigate the effects of legal regulation on IAQ throughout the duration of 1 year. Sixty facilities for sensitive populations were investigated. Particulate matter (PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), total bacteria count (TBC), total volatile organic compound (TVOC), formaldehyde (HCHO), radon (Rn), ozone (O3), asbestos, fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were target pollutants. As a result, none of the rooms' concentration of CO, NO2, O3, Rn, asbestos, and VOCs exceeded the Korean Standard of Indoor Air Quality, while some rooms' concentration of other pollutants exceeded the KSIAQ. Statutory facilities had lower indoor pollutant concentrations and exceedance rates due to efficient ventilation system and the lack of kitchen location within the building, as opposed to non-statutory facilities. In addition, the VOCs had significant differences depending on the number of years it took for the building to be constructed. To reduce the indoor pollutants concentrations, efficient ventilation systems should be installed while controlling the main sources of pollutants. In addition, construction and remodeling using eco-friendly materials should be considered. The standards of IAQ for small size facilities should be included in the KSIAQ in the future.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Elevated high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has prognostic value for future cardiovascular events. This study aimed to ascertain a valid prognostic time-period for predicting cardiovascular outcome based on baseline hs-CRP in AMI patients undergoing successful PCI on statin therapy. METHODS: Overall, 4410 AMI patients were enrolled from the Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction-National Institutes of Health (KAMIR-NIH) registry. Participants were divided into groups according to cut-off values of baseline hs-CRP (1.0, 3.0, and 10.0mg/L) and statin therapy intensity. The primary outcome was 36-month major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), a composite of all-cause mortality, any myocardial infarction, and repeat revascularization. The secondary outcome was MACE developed 0-6, 6-12, and 12-36 months after AMI. RESULTS: The overall incidence of 36-month MACE was significantly higher as baseline hs-CRP increased (by groups: 8.8% vs. 8.6% vs. 10.7% vs. 15.4%, log-rank p<0.001). The prognostic effect of baseline hs-CRP was mostly confined to the first 6 months after AMI (0-6 months MACE by groups: 1.6% vs. 2.3% vs. 4.3% vs. 6.1%, log-rank p<0.001) and attenuated in high-intensity statin users. Six months after AMI, this prognostic effect of baseline hs-CRP was remarkably reduced (6-12 month MACE by groups: 2.4% vs. 2.1% vs. 2.8% vs. 4.0%, log-rank p=0.111, 12-36 month MACE by groups: 4.7% vs. 4.1% vs. 4.0% vs. 6.2%, log-rank p=0.218); however, high-intensity statin treatment showed a consistent improvement in outcome. The observed time-dependent prognostic effects remained consistent following multivariate analysis. CONCLUSIONS: The prognostic impact of elevated hs-CRP at baseline was most evident during the first 6 months after AMI; however, the use of high-intensity statin persistently improved the clinical outcome even after the resolution of inflammatory reactions.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of herbal extracts on bone regeneration. Two known samples were screened. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We previously established a rat calvaria defect model using a combination of collagen scaffold and herbal extracts. An 8 mm diameter trephine bur with a low-speed dental hand piece was used to create a circular calvaria defect. The experimental group was divided into 4 classifications: control, collagen matrix, Danshen with collagen, and Ge Gan with collagen. Animals in each group were sacrificed at 4, 6, 8, and 10 weeks after surgery, and bone regeneration ability was evaluated by histological examination. RESULTS: Results revealed that both Danshen and Ge Gan extracts increased bone formation activity when used with collagen matrix. All groups showed almost the same histological findings until 6 weeks. However, after 6 weeks, bone formation activity proceeded differently in each group. In the experimental groups, new bone formation activity was found continuously up to 10 weeks. In the Danshen and Ge Gan groups, grafted materials were still present until 10 weeks after treatment, as evidenced by foreign body reactions showing multinucleated giant cells in chronic inflammatory vascular connective tissue. CONCLUSION: Histological analyses showed that Danshen and Ge Gan extractions increased bone formation activity when used in conjunction with collagen matrix.

RESUMO

The aim of this study is to introduce a surgical technique that can maintain blood supply to prevent condylar resorption in the extracorporeal reduction of condylar fracture. Neither the medial pterygoid muscle on the ramal bone nor the lateral pterygoid muscle on the condylar fragment was detached after vertical ramal osteotomy. Thus, reduction was performed in the intracorporeal state. Therefore, blood supply was expected to be maintained to the fragments of both the condylar and ramal bones. On postoperative radiographs, the anatomical outline of the fractured condyle was well restored, and the occlusion was stable. In the unilateral case, there were no signs of mandibular condylar resorption until postoperative 3 weeks. In the 2 bilateral cases, condylar displacements with plate fractures and screw loosening were observed at postoperative 1 month or 5 months, but radiodensity at the displaced fracture site increased during the follow-up period. Finally, complete remodeling of the condylar fragments with restored anatomic appearance was observed on 8-month or 2-year follow-up radiographs. All cases exhibited good healing aspects with no signs or symptoms of mandibular condylar dysfunction during the postoperative remodeling period after intracorporeal reduction of condylar fracture.

RESUMO

Transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs) are considered to be an essential structural component of flexible organic solar cells (FOSCs). Silver nanowire (AgNW) electrodes are widely used as TCEs owing to their excellent electrical and optical properties. The fabrication of AgNW electrodes has faced challenges in terms of forming large uniform interconnected networks so that high conductivity and reproducibility can be achieved. In this study, a simple method for creating an intimate contact between AgNWs that uses cold isostatic pressing (CIP) is demonstrated. This method increases the conductivity of the AgNW electrodes, which enables the fabrication of high-efficiency inverted FOSCs that have a power conversion efficiency of 8.75% on flexible polyethylene terephthalate with no short circuiting occurring as the CIP process minimizes the surface roughness of the AgNW electrode. This allows to achieve 100% manufacturing yield of FOSCs. Furthermore, these highly efficient FOSCs are proven to only be 2.4% less efficient even for an extreme bending radius of R ≈ 1.5 mm, compared with initial efficiency.

RESUMO

We designed and fabricated a random-size inverted-pyramid-structured polydimethylsiloxane (RSIPS-PDMS) sticker to enhance the light absorption of solar cells and thus increase their efficiency. The fabricated sticker was laminated onto bare glass and crystalline silicon (c-Si) surfaces; consequently, low solar-weighted reflectance values were obtained for these surfaces (6.88 and 17.2%, respectively). In addition, we found that incident light was refracted at the PDMS-air interface of each RSIPS, which redirected the incident power and significantly increased the optical path length in the RSIPS-PDMS sticker which was 14.7% greater than that in a flat-PDMS sticker. Moreover, we investigated power reflection and propagation through the RSIPS-PDMS sticker using a finite-difference time-domain method. By attaching an RSIPS-PDMS sticker onto both an organic solar cell (OSC) based on a glass substrate and a c-Si solar cell, the power conversion efficiency of the OSC and the c-Si solar cell were increased from 8.57 to 8.94% and from 16.2 to 17.9%, respectively. Thus, the RSIPS-PDMS sticker is expected to be universally applicable to the surfaces of solar cells to enhance their light absorption.

RESUMO

Intramuscular hemangioma (IMH) is a rare vascular disease involving skeletal muscle, comprising only 0.8% of hemangiomas. About 10% to 15% of IMHs occur in the head and neck region, mostly involving the masseter muscle. IMH occurs mostly in childhood, but is often not found until unexpected enlargement, pain, or cosmetic asymmetry occurs in adulthood. Several non-surgical treatments including cryotherapy, sclerosant injection, and arterial ligature have been described, but complete surgical resection is the curative intervention. In this report, we present two rare cases of IMH. One IMH case in a 48-year-old male occurred in the masseter muscle feeding from the transverse facial artery. Embolization of the distal branch of the facial artery was first conducted, and then the buccal mass was removed surgically via the intraoral approach. A second IMH case in a 58-year-old female occurred in the orbicularis oris muscle feeding from the superior labial artery, and the mass was excised surgically without embolization.

RESUMO

We demonstrate here an embedded metal electrode for highly efficient organic-inorganic hybrid nanowire solar cells. The electrode proposed here is an effective alternative to the conventional bus and finger electrode which leads to a localized short circuit at a direct Si/metal contact and has a poor collection efficiency due to a nonoptimized electrode design. In our design, a Ag/SiO2 electrode is embedded into a Si substrate while being positioned between Si nanowire arrays underneath poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), facilitating suppressed recombination at the Si/Ag interface and notable improvements in the fabrication reproducibility. With an optimized microgrid electrode, our 1 cm2 hybrid solar cells exhibit a power conversion efficiency of up to 16.1% with an open-circuit voltage of 607 mV and a short circuit current density of 34.0 mA/cm2. This power conversion efficiency is more than twice as high as that of solar cells using a conventional electrode (8.0%). The microgrid electrode significantly minimizes the optical and electrical losses. This reproducibly yields a superior quantum efficiency of 99% at the main solar spectrum wavelength of 600 nm. In particular, our solar cells exhibit a significant increase in the fill factor of 78.3% compared to that of a conventional electrode (61.4%); this is because of the drastic reduction in the metal/contact resistance of the 1 µm-thick Ag electrode. Hence, the use of our embedded microgrid electrode in the construction of an ideal carrier collection path presents an opportunity in the development of highly efficient organic-inorganic hybrid solar cells.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study is to report a rare case of mandibular adenocarcinoma that was diagnosed due to metastasis from the prostate. Numb chin syndrome (NCS), which was associated with this case, is also discussed. Computed tomography (CT) and an intraoral incisional biopsy of the left mandibular area were performed. Urology consultation, hormone therapy, chemotherapy and follow-up radiographic images were administered. Histological examination of the incised specimen revealed moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma. The Gleason score was 8 (primary 4/secondary 4). Immunohistochemical features and radiographic results confirmed the diagnosis of metastasis from prostate adenocarcinoma, moderately differentiated. The patient's prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level was very high. After hormone treatment, the patient's PSA levels dropped gradually. Seventeen months later, in May 2015, the PSA level was elevated. The 18-month follow-up CT image indicated that the patient's condition was aggravated. Docetaxel chemotherapy was started in June 2015 (18 months later), and the sixth cycle of the therapy is in progress. Oral metastases that originate from prostate adenocarcinoma are rare and can induce various periosteal reactions. Hormone therapy, chemotherapy and close follow-up could be additional, appropriate treatment, and were applied in this case. Finally, NCS is a valuable indicator of metastatic disease in the mandible.

RESUMO

We report a case of retiform hemangioendothelioma (RH) located in the infratemporal fossa and buccal area in a 13-year-old Korean boy. The tumor originated from the sphenoid bone of the infratemporal fossa area and spread into the cavernous sinus, orbital apex, and retro-nasal area with bone destruction of the pterygoid process. Tumor resection was conducted via Le Fort I osteotomy and partial maxillectomy to approach the infratemporal fossa and retro-nasal area. The diagnosis of RH was confirmed after surgery. In the presented patient, surgical excision was incomplete, and close follow-up was performed. There was no evidence of expansion or metastasis of the residual tumor in the 8 years after surgery. In cases of residual RH with low likelihood of expansion and metastasis, even though RH is an intermediate malignancy, close follow-up can be the appropriate treatment choice over additional aggressive therapy. To date, 29 papers and 48 RH cases have been reported, including this case. This case is the second reported RH case presenting as primary bone tumor and the first case originating in the oromaxillofacial area.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The association of biomaterial combined with repair factor-like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has prospective values. Bovine-derived xenograft has been identified as an osteoconductive and biocompatible grafting material that provides osseointegration ability. PRP has become a valuable adjunctive agent to promote healing in a lot of dental and oral surgery procedures. However, there are controversies with respect to the regenerative capacity of PRP and the real benefits of its use in bone grafts. The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of PRP combined with xenograft for the repair of peri-implant bone defects. METHODS: Twelve rabbits were used in this study, and the experimental surgery with implant installation was performed simultaneously. Autologous PRP was prepared before the surgical procedure. An intrabony defect (7.0 mm in diameter and 3.0 mm deep) was created in the tibia of each rabbit; then, 24 titanium dental implants (3.0 mm in diameter and 8.5 mm long) were inserted into these osteotomy sites. Thus, a standardized gap (4.0 mm) was established between the surrounding bony walls and the implant surface. The gaps were treated with either xenograft alone (control group) or xenograft combined with PRP (experimental group). After healing for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 weeks, the rabbits were sacrificed with an overdose of KCl solution. Two rabbits were killed at each time, and the samples including dental implants and surrounding bone were collected and processed for histological analysis. RESULTS: More newly formed bone and a better bone healing process were observed in control group. The histomorphometric analysis revealed that the mean percentage of bone-to-implant contact in the control group was significantly higher than that of the experimental group (25.23 vs. 8.16 %; P < 0.05, independent-simple t test, analysis of variance [ANOVA]). CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that in the addition of PRP to bovine-derived xenograft in the repair of bone defects around the implant, PRP may delay peri-implant bone healing.

RESUMO

Frequency combs, millions of narrow-linewidth optical modes referenced to an atomic clock, have shown remarkable potential in time/frequency metrology, atomic/molecular spectroscopy and precision LIDARs. Applications have extended to coherent nonlinear Raman spectroscopy of molecules and quantum metrology for entangled atomic qubits. Frequency combs will create novel possibilities in nano-photonics and plasmonics; however, its interrelation with surface plasmons is unexplored despite the important role that plasmonics plays in nonlinear spectroscopy and quantum optics through the manipulation of light on a subwavelength scale. Here, we demonstrate that a frequency comb can be transformed to a plasmonic comb in plasmonic nanostructures and reverted to the original frequency comb without noticeable degradation of <6.51 × 10(-19) in absolute position, 2.92 × 10(-19) in stability and 1 Hz in linewidth. The results indicate that the superior performance of a well-defined frequency comb can be applied to nanoplasmonic spectroscopy, quantum metrology and subwavelength photonic circuits.

RESUMO

We demonstrate novel all-back-contact Si nanohole solar cells via the simple direct deposition of molybdenum oxide (MoOx) and lithium fluoride (LiF) thin films as dopant-free and selective carrier contacts (SCCs). This approach is in contrast to conventionally used high-temperature thermal doping processes, which require multistep patterning processes to produce diffusion masks. Both MoOx and LiF thin films are inserted between the Si absorber and Al electrodes interdigitatedly at the rear cell surfaces, facilitating effective carrier collection at the MoOx/Si interface and suppressed recombination at the Si and LiF/Al electrode interface. With optimized MoOx and LiF film thickness as well as the all-back-contact design, our 1 cm(2) Si nanohole solar cells exhibit a power conversion efficiency of up to 15.4%, with an open-circuit voltage of 561 mV and a fill factor of 74.6%. In particular, because of the significant reduction in Auger/surface recombination as well as the excellent Si-nanohole light absorption, our solar cells exhibit an external quantum efficiency of 83.4% for short-wavelength light (∼400 nm), resulting in a dramatic improvement (54.6%) in the short-circuit current density (36.8 mA/cm(2)) compared to that of a planar cell (23.8 mA/cm(2)). Hence, our all-back-contact design using MoOx and LiF films formed by a simple deposition process presents a unique opportunity to develop highly efficient and low-cost nanostructured Si solar cells.

RESUMO

Surgical procedures for parotidectomy had been developed to gain adequate approach, prevent morbidity of nerve, and give esthetic satisfaction. We performed two cases of parotidectomy through facelift incision. One case was reconstructed with superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) flap and sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle rotated flap at the parotid bed. In second case, same procedures were performed, but collagen membrane was additionally implanted for prevention of Frey's syndrome. After surgery, two cases showed esthetic results without neck scar and hollow defect on parotid bed area.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The posterior movement of mandible was known as the main cause of the changes in the pharyngeal airway space (PAS) and the postoperative obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The purpose of this study was to know the changes of PAS and position of hyoid bone. METHODS: Lateral cephalographies of 13 patients who had undergone sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) setback surgery were taken preoperatively (T1), postoperatively within 2 months (T2), and follow-up after 6 months or more (T3). On the basis of F-H plane, diameters of nasopharynx, oropharynx, and hypopharynx were measured. The movements of the soft palate, tongue, and hyoid bone were also measured. RESULTS: The amount of mandible setback was 7.5 ± 3.8 mm. In the measurements of PAS, there was a statistically significant decrease of 2.8 ± 2.5 mm in nasopharynx (P < 0.01), and 1.7 ± 2.4 mm in oropharynx (P < 0.01) were observed after surgery. The hypopharynx decreased 1.0 ± 2.1 mm after surgery and continuously decreased 1.0 ± 2.8 mm at follow-up. The changes in hyoid bone position showed the posterior movement only after surgery and posteroinferior movement at follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: The PAS such as nasopharynx, oropharynx, and hypopharynx showed relatively high correlation with the amount of mandibular setback. The change of resistance in upper airway may be important for the prevention of OSA after mandibular setback surgery.
