RESUMO

This descriptive study was aimed at identifying the anxiety levels of Turkish people in the first three months of the pandemic, the coping methods they use to control this anxiety, and their knowledge and behavior about protection and prevention against COVID-19. The data were collected from 571 individuals. Of the individuals, 84.6% had anxiety. The anxiety levels of those who kept working during the pandemic were significantly higher than were the anxiety levels of those who did not (p < .05). The participants experienced a moderate level of anxiety, and they mostly used relaxation techniques, music therapy, and prayer/worship to cope with anxiety. The knowledge level of the individuals about COVID-19 was moderate.

RESUMO

AIMS: This study was conducted to examine the effects of using surgical masks on nursing students' cognitive and physiological parameters during full-time face-to-face teaching during the pandemic. BACKGROUND: It is known that the use of surgical masks has effects on health professionals' physiological parameters. DESIGN: A descriptive cross-sectional study with a pretest-posttest design was conducted. The study was carried out at a state university. METHODS: Sixty-one nursing students taking Internal Medicine Nursing course in the fall semester during the COVID-19 pandemic were included in the study. Study data were collected by using a Descriptive Information Form, the Cognitive Fatigue Scale, the One-way Dyspnea Scale and the Cognitive Reaction Time application in a theoretical course that took 310 min on 15 November 2021. Students' physiological parameters were measured by using a thermometer and pulse oximetry. RESULTS: It was found that students' cognitive fatigue levels (p < 0.001) and body temperature increased (p < 0.001) and that cognitive reaction rates (p = 0.05) and pulse rates decreased (p < 0.001). It was determined that after the lesson, there was a weak positive correlation between nursing students' level of dyspnea and body temperature and their cognitive fatigue levels (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: It was determined that the use of surgical masks during full-time face-to-face teaching increased students' cognitive fatigue and decreased their cognitive reaction rates. The research will have an impact on redesigning the curriculum for face-to-face teaching. Lecturers should revise their teaching by taking these findings into account.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Patient-physician interviewing skills are crucial in health service delivery. It is necessary for effective care and treatment that the physician initiates the interview with the patient, takes anamnesis, collects the required information, and ends the consultation. Different methods are used to improve patient-physician interview skills before encountering actual patients. In the absence of simulated patients, peer simulation is an alternative method for carrying out the training. This study aims to show whether patient-physician interview skills training can be implemented using peer simulation in the absence of the simulated patient. METHODS: This is a descriptive quantitative study. This research was conducted in six stages: identification of the research problem and determination of the research question, development of data collection tools, planning, acting, evaluation, and monitoring. The data were collected via the patient-physician interview videos of the students. The research team performed descriptive analysis on quantitative data and thematic analysis on qualitative data. RESULTS: Fifty students participated in the study. When performing peer-assisted simulation applications in the absence of simulated patients, the success rate in patient-physician interviews and peer-simulated patient roles was over 88%. Although the students were less satisfied with playing the peer-simulated patient role, the satisfaction towards the application was between 77.33% and 98%. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: In patient-physician interviews, the peer-simulated patient method is an effective learning approach. There may be difficulties finding suitable simulated patients, training them, budgeting to cover the costs, planning, organizing the interviews, and solving potential issues during interviews. Our study offers an affordable solution for students to earn patient-physician interview skills in faculties facing difficulties with providing simulated patients for training.

RESUMO

AIM/OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop a Faculty Development Program for Coaching that can be used in teaching psychomotor skills in nursing education. BACKGROUND: Knowledge, skills and attitudes of faculty members play a significant role in students acquiring basic nursing psychomotor skills before clinical training. DESIGN: It is a curriculum development process study. METHODS: The study sample comprised 149 nursing faculty members in all nursing faculties in Turkey. This study combines the Delphi survey, analysis of psychomotor skills training programs and a literature review with the Triangulation Strategy. RESULTS: A Faculty Development Program for Coaching consisting of six modules and 34-hours was developed. The program including various teaching strategies. Participant's achievements are assessed by grading individual assignments. CONCLUSIONS: The Faculty Development Program for Coaching was developed to be used in all nursing faculties. When this faculty development program is implemented, it will enable researchers to make national and international comparisons in this field.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of simulation method in nursing education. . METHODS: The experimental study was conducted from February 2013 to January 2014 at the Nursing Faculty of Ege University, Izmir, Turkey, and comprised second-year students. The subjects were randomly assigned to experimental or control groups. The experimental group participated in a simulation laboratory that involved the use of a standardized patient. Data was collected and analysed using SPSS 20. RESULTS: Of the 66 subjects, with a mean age of 20}1.05 years, 62(93.9%) were females and 4(6.1%) were males. There were 32(48.5%) subjects in the experimental group and 34(51.5%) in the control group. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in the mean scores obtained on the pretest, posttest ( and retention test (p>0.05 each). However, experimental group had higher mean retention test scores (1.90}1.96). CONCLUSIONS: The knowledge levels of both groups increased, but lack of significant difference between the scores shows that both methods are successful.
