RESUMO

Chitosan nanoparticles (CS-NPs) and chitosan/polyacrylic acid hydrogel nanoparticles (CS/PAA-HNPs) were obtained by ionic gelation with tripolyphosphate anions and copolymerization of CS with acrylic acid (AA), respectively. The prepared NPs were loaded by different concentrations of copper (1, 2 and 3% with respect to CS) to obtain chitosan/copper nanocomposites (CS/Cu-NCs) and chitosan/polyacrylic acid/copper hydrogel nanocomposites (CS/PAA/Cu-HNCs). The prepared NPs and their NCs were characterized by different techniques. The swelling properties and copper release from CS/Cu-NCs and CS/PAA/Cu-HNCs were evaluated. The antibacterial activity of the prepared samples against bacteria (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa), fungi, and yeast were investigated. The results displayed that the copper release, as well as the swelling percentage of CS/PAA/Cu-HNCs, were higher than that of CS/Cu-NCs. Furthermore, the impact of using CuSO4, CS/Cu-NCs, and CS/PAA/Cu-HNCs as a different source of copper on chlorophyll content, vegetative growth, minerals content, and the yield of onion plants during two seasons 2016 and 2017 were studied. It was found that the yield, plant growth, and nutrient content of onion bulbs were improved using CS/PAA-HNPs, which was loaded with 75 ppm copper, as foliar spray for onion plants.

RESUMO

The present study was designed to prepare a specific safe antiserum for Naja nigricollis using γ-irradiated (1.5KGy and3KGy) venoms. Rabbits were used for active immunization using irradiated venoms (1.5 and 3 kGy) as a toxoid, mice were used for determination of LD50 post immunization and the rats were used for neutralization of the cardiotoxic effect of venom. Results of the immunodiffusion test indicated that the sera of rabbits raised against non-irradiated, 1.5- and 3-kGy γ-irradiated venom, had the same results of precipitin bands. A significant inhibition of phospholipase A2 activities was obtained when neutralized with native, γ-irradiated (1.5KGy and3KGy) venoms. On the other hand, preincubation of the venom ½ LD50 (0.154 mg/kg i.p.) with each antiserum (non-irradiated or irradiated venom) at 37°C for 1 h in a ratio (1:4) produced a significant reduction in the values of creatine kinase and creatine kinase isoenzyme-MB. However, significant elevation in aspartate aminotransferase level and no change in lactate dehydrogenase level were observed. So the results of this study indicated that the irradiated venom treatment reduces the cardiotoxic effect of venom in immunized immunization animals for preparing vaccines.

RESUMO

A cell surface adsorption isotherm approach is investigated with normal and diabetic (streptozotocin-induced) rat hepatocytes utilizing mathematical modeling. Freshly prepared monodispersed viable rat hepatocytes in Ca(2+)- and Mg(2+)-free phosphate buffer are obtained by collagenase perfusion and used in this study. [3H]ouabain is used as a ligand that specifically binds with the alpha 1 and alpha 2 isoforms of the alpha-protein subunit of the hepatocyte-membrane-incorporated Na-K-ATPase. The model that fits the experimental data assumes the presence of multiple receptors on the cell surface, and only when a specific fraction of the total number of one receptor have effectively reacted will the other receptor initiate reaction with the ligand. The results suggest the existence of two receptors, in normal and diabetic hepatocytes, interacting with ouabain and having different equilibrium constants. The alpha 2 isoform interacts more strongly with ouabain than the alpha 1 isoform in both types of cells. The alpha 1 isoform of the diabetic hepatocytes has stronger affinity with the glycoside than the alpha 1 isoform of the normal hepatocytes, while alpha 2 of the diabetics shows weaker affinity than alpha 2 of the normal hepatocytes. Therefore, the alpha 1 and alpha 2 isoforms of Na-K-ATPase in hepatocyte-cell-membrane have different affinities for ouabain and have been conformationally and/or structurally altered in chronic diabetes.

RESUMO

This study aimed at the assessment of the nurses' knowledge and attitudes towards epilepsy. A sample consisting of 273 nurses working in different hospital departments, at three University hospitals in Tanta, Menoufiya and Zagazig was chosen. The results revealed a deficiency in the nurses' knowledge about epilepsy. However, they had a moderately positive attitude towards epilepsy. Although more than half of them considered epilepsy a mental illness, they agreed that epileptics must learn in special schools. It is recommended that all in-service training programs for nurses should emphasize epilepsy management, rehabilitation of epileptics, and how to change public attitudes towards epilepsy.

RESUMO

This study was conducted to determine the elderly health problems and family care presented to them. The study was carried out in four MCH centers in Zagazig. The sample was composed of 275 women, having elderly members in their families, they were interviewed individually at the MCH center. The results showed that the main elderly physical problems were decline in daily activities, impairment of vision & digestive and urinary disorders. Psychological problems as mentioned by their families were agitation, depression and low body image. While the main identified socio-economic problems were loneliness and limited income. Regarding the family care presented to the elderly, the results showed that the low social class families had poor consideration as regards nutrition of elderly, regular physician visit, foot care, and personal hygiene. It is recommended to provide health education programs for the family about aging process, problems and needs of elderly people. As well as health education to the elderly themselves to motivate them to seek medical advice at regular intervals and integration of geriatric care in MCH centers.
