RESUMO

For a large population of elderly who live alone, a continuous long-term daily monitoring system is critical and imminently needed to enhance the quality of their lives. Continuous monitoring of vitality information (i.e., which area the elder is staying in, the motion state and activity intensity of an elder) is essential for elderly care. In this paper, we use existing commodity Wi-Fi devices to design and implement a long-term device-free human daily vitality system, WiMonitor. Our system can continuously capture the target's vitality information in a multi-room home environment without compromising the privacy of the target. In a continuous 22-day experiment, WiMonitor successfully captures the human vitality information accurately. We believe our system can provide valuable long-term monitoring data for both researchers and health care personnel.

RESUMO

Table-top laser-plasma ion accelerators have many exciting applications, many of which require ion beams with simultaneous narrow energy spread and high conversion efficiency. However, achieving these requirements has been elusive. Here we report the experimental demonstration of laser-driven ion beams with narrow energy spread and energies up to 18 MeV per nucleon and ∼5% conversion efficiency (that is 4 J out of 80-J laser). Using computer simulations we identify a self-organizing scheme that reduces the ion energy spread after the laser exits the plasma through persisting self-generated plasma electric (∼10(12) V m(-1)) and magnetic (∼10(4) T) fields. These results contribute to the development of next generation compact accelerators suitable for many applications such as isochoric heating for ion-fast ignition and producing warm dense matter for basic science.

RESUMO

We demonstrate the use of low-gain optical parametric amplification (OPA) as a means of improving temporal contrast to a detection-limited level 10(-10). 250 microJ, 500 fs pulses of 1053 nm are frequency doubled and subsequently restored to the original wavelength by OPA with >10% efficiency.
