INTRODUCTION: Emotional words in comparison with neutral words have different hemispheric specialization. It is assumed that the right hemisphere has a role in processing every kind of emotional word. The objective of the present study was the development of a Persian version of the dichotic emotional word test and evaluate its validation among adult Persian speakers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was done on 60 adults, with the age ranging from 18-30 years for both genders, who had no history of neurological disorders with normal hearing. The developed test included eight main lists; each had several dichotic emotional/ neutral pairs of words. Participants were asked to recall as many words in each list as they could after they listened to them. A content validity index was used to analyze the validity of the test. RESULTS: The mean content validity index score was 0.94. The findings showed that in the left ear, emotional words were remembered more than neutral ones (P=0.007). While in the right ear, neutral words were remembered more (P=0.009). There were no significant differences in male and female scores. CONCLUSION: Dichotic emotional word test has a high content validity. The ability to remember emotional words better in the left ear supports the dominant role of the right hemisphere in emotional word perception.

PURPOSE: To determine the effect of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) on involuntary eye movements, visual acuity, and contrast sensitivity in myopic patients with infantile nystagmus syndrome. DESIGN: Prospective interventional case series. METHODS: This study was conducted on patients with infantile nystagmus syndrome and myopia equal to or more than -1 diopter (D), who were referred to our clinic over a 2-year period. Patients older than 18 years of age with a stable refraction for at least 1 year who were good candidates for PRK were included. Complete ophthalmologic examinations including assessment of best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), contrast sensitivity, and videonystagmography were performed for all patients before and 3 months after surgery. RESULTS: Twenty-four eyes of 12 patients with mean age of 23 ± 2 years were enrolled in this study. Spherical equivalent refractive error was -2.82 ± 1.65 D and -0.26 ± 0.25 D before and after PRK, respectively (P < .001). Monocular BCVA improved from 0.36 ± 0.21 logMAR to 0.27 ± 0.25 logMAR and binocular BCVA improved from 0.33 ± 0.2 logMAR to 0.17 ± 0.16 logMAR (P < .001). Contrast sensitivity significantly improved at low (P < .001), intermediate (P < .001), and high frequencies (P = .01). The frequency, amplitude, and intensity of nystagmus were significantly decreased after PRK (P < .001). There was no correlation between the degree of myopia correction and improvement in sensory and motor indices of nystagmus (P > .1, Spearman correlation coefficient). CONCLUSION: PRK in patients with infantile nystagmus syndrome and myopia improved monocular and binocular BCVA and contrast sensitivity. Furthermore, motor indices of nystagmus (frequency, amplitude, and intensity) were significantly improved after surgery in these patients.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is a significant global health problem with serious short- and long-term consequences. This study examined the long term effects of preterm birth on vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) among preschool-aged children. METHODS: Thirty-one children with preterm and 20 children with term birth histories aged 5.5 to 6.5 years were studied. Each child underwent VEMPs testing using a 500 Hz tone-burst stimulus with a 95 dB nHL (normal hearing level) intensity level. RESULTS: The mean peak latencies of the p13 and n23 waves in the very preterm group were significantly longer than for the full-term group (p≤ 0.041). There was a significant difference between very and mildly preterm children in the latency of peak p13 (p= 0.003). No significant differences existed between groups for p13-n23 amplitude and the interaural amplitude difference ratio. The tested ear and gender did not affect the results of the test. CONCLUSION: Prolonged VEMPs in very preterm children may reflect neurodevelopmental impairment and incomplete maturity of the vestibulospinal tract (sacculocollic reflex pathway), especially myelination. VEMPs is a non-invasive technique for investigating the vestibular function in young children, and considered to be an appropriate tool for evaluating vestibular impairments at the low brainstem level. It can be used in follow-ups of the long-term effects of preterm birth on the vestibular system.

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus is a perception of sound without external source. The exact etiology of tinnitus is not fully understood, although some researchers believe that the condition usually starts in the cochlea. The aim of this study was to determine the potential contribution of outer hair cell dysfunction to chronic tinnitus, by application of Distortion-Product Evoked Otoacoustic Emission (DPOAE) and Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emission (TEOAE) and also to determine the relationship between tinnitus loudness and the amplitude of these two potentials. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted on 20 tinnitus patients aged 20-45 years and 20 age- and gender-matched control subjects. DPOAE and TEOAE were performed on each subject. RESULTS: The difference in the amplitudes of TEOAE between the two groups was not significantly different (P=0.08), but the amplitude of DPOAE in patients with tinnitus was significantly lower than the corresponding value in the control subjects (P=0.01). There was no correlation between tinnitus loudness and the amplitudes of neither DPOAE nor TEOAE. CONCLUSION: Abnormal findings in the DPOAE of tinnitus sufferers suggest some form of cochlear dysfunction in these patients. As there was no correlation between the amplitude of the recorded potentials and tinnitus loudness, factors other than cochlear dysfunction may also influence the loudness of tinnitus.
