RESUMO

Background: The role of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) in the treatment of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is unconfirmed. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) plus anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) antibody/tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) with or without TACE as first-line treatment for advanced HCC. Methods: This nationwide, multicenter, retrospective cohort study included advanced HCC patients receiving either TACE with ICIs plus anti-VEGF antibody/TKIs (TACE-ICI-VEGF) or only ICIs plus anti-VEGF antibody/TKIs (ICI-VEGF) from January 2018 to December 2022. The study design followed the target trial emulation framework with stabilized inverse probability of treatment weighting (sIPTW) to minimize biases. The primary outcome was overall survival (OS). Secondary outcomes included progression-free survival (PFS), objective response rate (ORR), and safety. The study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT05332821. Findings: Among 1244 patients included in the analysis, 802 (64.5%) patients received TACE-ICI-VEGF treatment, and 442 (35.5%) patients received ICI-VEGF treatment. The median follow-up time was 21.1 months and 20.6 months, respectively. Post-application of sIPTW, baseline characteristics were well-balanced between the two groups. TACE-ICI-VEGF group exhibited a significantly improved median OS (22.6 months [95% CI: 21.2-23.9] vs 15.9 months [14.9-17.8]; P < 0.0001; adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 0.63 [95% CI: 0.53-0.75]). Median PFS was also longer in TACE-ICI-VEGF group (9.9 months [9.1-10.6] vs 7.4 months [6.7-8.5]; P < 0.0001; aHR 0.74 [0.65-0.85]) per Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumours (RECIST) version 1.1. A higher ORR was observed in TACE-ICI-VEGF group, by either RECIST v1.1 or modified RECIST (41.2% vs 22.9%, P < 0.0001; 47.3% vs 29.7%, P < 0.0001). Grade ≥3 adverse events occurred in 178 patients (22.2%) in TACE-ICI-VEGF group and 80 patients (18.1%) in ICI-VEGF group. Interpretation: This multicenter study supports the use of TACE combined with ICIs and anti-VEGF antibody/TKIs as first-line treatment for advanced HCC, demonstrating an acceptable safety profile. RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate distribution and drug resistance of pathogens of bloodstream infection in patients with hematological malignancies, in order to provide reference for clinical infection control and treatment. METHODS: The clinical information of blood culture patients in the hematology department of our hospital from January 2016 to December 2021 was reviewed. They were divided into transplantation group and non-transplantation group according to whether they had undergone hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The types of pathogens and their drug resistance were analyzed. RESULTS: Two hundred and ninety-nine positive strains of pathogenic bacteria were detected. In the transplantation group, Gram-negative bacteria accounted for 68.5% (50/73), Gram-positive bacteria accounted for 6.8% (5/73), and fungi accounted for 24.7% (18/73). The resistance rate of Escherichia coli to the third-generation cephalosporins was 77.8%, and 11.5% to carbapenems. The resistance rate of Klebsiella pneumoniae to the third-generation cephalosporins was 50.0%, and 56.2% to carbapenems. In the non-transplantation group, Gram-negative bacteria accounted for 64.1% (145/226), Gram-positive bacteria accounted for 31.0% (70/226), and fungi accounted for 4.9% (11/226). Gram-positive bacteria were mainly Enterococcus faecium (6.6%, 15/226) and Coagulase-negative Staphylococci (6.2%, 14/226). The fungi were all Candida tropicalis. The resistance rate of Escherichia coli to the third-generation cephalosporins was 63.8%, and 10.3% to carbapenems. The resistance rate of Klebsiella pneumoniae to the third-generation cephalosporins was 46.3%, and 26.8% to carbapenems. CONCLUSION: The types of pathogenic bacteria in bloodstream infection in patients with hematological malignancies are varied. Gram-negative bacteria is the main pathogenic bacteria. The resistance of pathogenic bacteria to antibiotics is severe. Antibiotics should be used scientifically and reasonably according to the detection and resistance of pathogenic bacteria.

RESUMO

As severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants continuously emerge, an increasing number of mutations are accumulating in the Spike protein receptor-binding domain (RBD) region. Through sequence analysis of various Variants of Concern (VOC), we identified that they predominantly fall within the ο lineage although recent variants introduce any novel mutations in the RBD. Molecular dynamics simulations were employed to compute the binding free energy of these variants with human Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). Structurally, the binding interface of the ο RBD displays a strong positive charge, complementing the negatively charged binding interface of ACE2, resulting in a significant enhancement in the electrostatic potential energy for the ο variants. Although the increased potential energy is partially offset by the rise in polar solvation free energy, enhanced electrostatic potential contributes to the long-range recognition between the ο variant's RBD and ACE2. We also conducted simulations of glycosylated ACE2-RBD proteins. The newly emerged ο (JN.1) variant has added a glycosylation site at N-354@RBD, which significantly weakened its binding affinity with ACE2. Further, our interaction studies with three monoclonal antibodies across multiple SARS-CoV-2 strains revealed a diminished neutralization efficacy against the ο variants, primarily attributed to the electrostatic repulsion between the antibodies and RBD interface. Considering the characteristics of the ο variant and the trajectory of emerging strains, we propose that newly developed antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 RBD should have surfaces rich in negative potential and, postbinding, exhibit strong van der Waals interactions. These findings provide invaluable guidance for the formulation of future therapeutic strategies.

RESUMO

Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) in acid can solve alkalinity issues while highly corrosive and reductive acidic electrolytes usually cause catalyst degradation. Inhibiting catalyst degradation is crucial for the stability of acidic CO2RR. Here, we reveal the microenvironment changes of dynamic Bi-based catalysts and develop a pulse chronoamperometry (CA) strategy to improve the stability of acidic CO2RR. In situ fluorescence mappings show that the local pH changes from neutral to acid, and the in situ Raman spectra reveal the dynamic evolution of interfacial water structures in the microenvironment. We propose that the surface charge properties of dynamic catalysts affect the competitive adsorption of K+ and protons, thereby causing the differences in local pH and CO2RR intermediate adsorption. We also develop a pulse CA strategy to reactivate catalysts, and the stability of acidic CO2RR is improved by 2 orders of magnitude for 100 h operation, which is higher than most reports on the stability of acidic CO2RR. This work gives insights on how microenvironment changes affecting the stability of acidic CO2RR, and provides guidance for designing stable catalysts in acidic electrolytes.

RESUMO

Ultraviolet (UV) A radiation (315-400 nm) is the predominant component of solar UV radiation that reaches the Earth's surface. However, the underlying mechanisms of the positive effects of UV-A on photosynthetic organisms have not yet been elucidated. In this study, we investigated the effects of UV-A radiation on the growth, photosynthetic ability, and metabolome of the edible cyanobacterium Nostoc sphaeroides. Exposures to 5-15 W m-2 (15-46 µmol photons m-2 s-1) UV-A and 4.35 W m-2 (20 µmol photons m-2 s-1) visible light for 16 days significantly increased the growth rate and biomass production of N. sphaeroides cells by 18%-30% and 15%-56%, respectively, compared to the non-UV-A-acclimated cells. Additionally, the UV-A-acclimated cells exhibited a 1.8-fold increase in the cellular nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP) pool with an increase in photosynthetic capacity (58%), photosynthetic efficiency (24%), QA re-oxidation, photosystem I abundance, and cyclic electron flow (87%), which further led to an increase in light-induced NADPH generation (31%) and ATP content (83%). Moreover, the UV-A-acclimated cells showed a 2.3-fold increase in ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase activity, indicating an increase in their carbon-fixing capacity. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-based metabolomics further revealed that UV-A radiation upregulated the energy-storing carbon metabolism, as evidenced by the enhanced accumulation of sugars, fatty acids, and citrate in the UV-A-acclimated cells. Therefore, our results demonstrate that UV-A radiation enhances energy flow and carbon assimilation in the cyanobacterium N. sphaeroides.IMPORTANCEUltraviolet (UV) radiation exerts harmful effects on photo-autotrophs; however, several studies demonstrated the positive effects of UV radiation, especially UV-A radiation (315-400 nm), on primary productivity. Therefore, understanding the underlying mechanisms associated with the promotive effects of UV-A radiation on primary productivity can facilitate the application of UV-A for CO2 sequestration and lead to the advancement of photobiological sciences. In this study, we used the cyanobacterium Nostoc sphaeroides, which has an over 1,700-year history of human use as food and medicine, to explore its photosynthetic acclimation response to UV-A radiation. As per our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate that UV-A radiation increases the biomass yield of N. sphaeroides by enhancing energy flow and carbon assimilation. Our findings provide novel insights into UV-A-mediated photosynthetic acclimation and provide a scientific basis for the application of UV-A radiation for optimizing light absorption capacity and enhancing CO2 sequestration in the frame of a future CO2 neutral, circular, and sustainable bioeconomy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Histone modification has a significant effect on gene expression. Enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) contributes to the epigenetic silencing of target chromatin through its roles as a histone-lysine N-methyltransferase enzyme. The development of anoikis resistance in tumor cells is considered to be a critical step in the metastatic process of primary malignant tumors. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect and mechanism of anoikis resistance in ovarian adenocarcinoma peritoneal metastasis. METHODS: In addition to examining EZH2 protein expression in ovarian cancer omental metastatic tissues, we established a model of ovarian cancer cell anoikis and a xenograft tumor model in nude mice. Anoikis resistance and ovarian cancer progression were tested after EZH2 and N6-methyladenosine (m6A) levels were modified. RESULTS: EZH2 expression was significantly higher in ovarian cancer omental metastatic tissues than in normal ovarian tissues. Reducing the level of EZH2 decreased the level of m6A and ovarian cancer cell anoikis resistance in vitro and inhibited ovarian cancer progression in vivo. M6a regulation altered the effect of EZH2 on anoikis resistance. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that EZH2 contributes to anoikis resistance and promotes ovarian adenocarcinoma abdominal metastasis by m6A modification. Our findings imply the potential of the clinical application of m6A and EZH2 for patients with ovarian cancer.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Galeazzi fracture dislocation is a compound injury that encompasses fractures of the distal third of the radius and dislocation of the distal radial ulnar joint (DRUJ). Clinically, this condition is rare and often leads to distal ulnar bifurcation. In previous similar reports, patients were effectively managed through surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: In this case report, we describe an 11-year-old male child who presented with an ulnar bifida following trauma to the hand, and was treated with manipulation and conservative treatment without surgery. A follow-up performed over the years demonstrated that the patient recovered well, and had normal wrist movements without significant pain, and the patient expressed great satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS: Ulnar diaphyseal fracture may occur in children or adolescents due to injuries, and may be accompanied with manipulation and repositioning. Conservative treatment can be applied to avoid the trauma associated with surgery especially in the absence of severe joint mobility impairment with good outcomes.

RESUMO

Main group indium materials have been known as promising electrocatalysts for two-electron-involved carbon dioxide reduction to produce formate, which is a key energy vector in many industrial reactions. However, the synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) monometallic nonlayered indium remains a great challenge. Here, we present a facile electrochemical reduction strategy to transform 2D indium coordination polymer into elemental indium nanosheets. In a customized flow cell, the reconstructed metallic indium exhibits a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 96.3% for formate with a maximum partial current density exceeding 360 mA cm-2 and negligible degradation after 140 h operation in 1 M KOH solution, outperforming the state-of-the-art indium-based electrocatalysts. Moreover, in and ex situ electrochemical analysis and characterizations demonstrate that the enhanced exposure of active sites and mass/charge transport at the CO2 gas-catalyst-electrolyte triple-phase interface and the restrained electrolyte flooding are contributing to producing and stabilizing carbon dioxide radical anion intermediates, thus leading to superior catalytic performance.

RESUMO

Objective: The head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs) have higher incidence rates in men, but the reasons are still obscure. This study aimed to investigate the sex-specific gene expression patterns and predict the regulatory mechanisms. Design: Data including clinical, survival, RNA-seq, miRNA, and methylation information were derived from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). A total of 131 paired male and female cases were included based on propensity score matching. We concentrated on the prognostic values of the sex-specific pathways enriched by differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and predicted the potential regulatory mechanisms from immune cell infiltration, ceRNA regulatory network, methylation, and differential coexpression analysis. Results: Compared with females, males exhibited a lower activity of immune-related functions and higher activities of mitochondrial and ubiquitination functions. The pathway activities were associated with the prognosis of males but less relevant to females. We extracted eight pathways with sex-biased survival patterns, of which five were about down-regulated immune functions, and three were up-regulated pathways (GTP biosynthetic, DNA polymerase, and spliceosomal complex assembly). The five immune pathways were moderately or strongly correlated with the proportion of macrophages. We identified six over-expressed lncRNAs that might be involved in the regulation of the three up-regulated pathways. These lncRNAs exhibited a lower methylation density in males, which might account for their over-expression. Conclusions: For HNSCCs, males were characterized by immunosuppression. It was a sign of unfavorable prognosis and might be associated the proportion of macrophages. LncRNAs and methylation might be involved in the regulation of these pathways.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Treatment strategy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and Vp4 [main trunk] portal vein tumor thrombosis (PVTT) remains limited due to posttreatment liver failure. We aimed to assess the efficacy of irradiation stent placement with 125 I plus transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) (ISP-TACE) compared to sorafenib plus TACE (Sora-TACE) in these patients. METHODS: In this multicenter randomized controlled trial, participants with HCC and Vp4 PVTT without extrahepatic metastases were enrolled from November 2018 to July 2021 at 16 medical centers. The primary endpoint was overall survival (OS). The secondary endpoints were hepatic function, time to symptomatic progression, patency of portal vein, disease control rate, and treatment safety. RESULTS: Of 105 randomized participants, 51 were assigned to the ISP-TACE group, and 54 were assigned to the Sora-TACE group. The median OS was 9.9 months versus 6.3 months (95% CI: 0.27-0.82; P =0.01). Incidence of acute hepatic decompensation was 16% (8 of 51) versus 33% (18 of 54) ( P =0.036). The time to symptomatic progression was 6.6 months versus 4.2 months (95% CI: 0.38-0.93; P =0.037). The median stent patency was 7.2 months (interquartile range, 4.7-9.3) in the ISP-TACE group. The disease control rate was 86% (44 of 51) versus 67% (36 of 54) ( P =0.018). Incidences of adverse events at least grade 3 were comparable between the safety populations of the two groups: 16 of 49 (33%) versus 18 of 50 (36%) ( P =0.73). CONCLUSION: Irradiation stent placement plus TACE showed superior results compared with sorafenib plus TACE in prolonging OS in patients with HCC and Vp4 PVTT.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aggregation of alpha-synuclein (α-syn) is closely related to the pathogenesis and dysfunction of Parkinson's disease. METHODS: To investigate the potential of nanoparticlemediated therapy, the interactive mechanism between α-syn and n-myristyltrimethylammonium bromide (MTAB) Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with different diameters was explored by molecular dynamics simulations. RESULTS: The results indicated that there was a directional interaction between α-syn and n-MTAB AuNPs, in which the driving force for the binding of the C-terminus in α-syn came from electrostatic interactions and the nonamyloid ß component (NAC) domain exhibited weak hydrophobic interactions as well as electrostatic interaction, thereby preventing α-syn aggregation. Energy statistics and analysis showed that for 5-MTAB AuNPs, acidic amino acids such as Glu and Asp played a very important role. CONCLUSIONS: This study not only demonstrated a theoretical foundation for the behavior of biomolecules directionally adsorbed on the surface of biofunctional nanoparticles but also indicated that 5-MTAB AuNPs may be a potential inhibitor against α-syn protein aggregation.

RESUMO

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the etiological agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), in which the main protease (Mpro) plays an important role in the virus's life cycle. In this work, two representative peptide inhibitors (11a and PF-07321332) were selected, and their interaction mechanisms of non-covalently bound with Mpro were firstly investigated by means of molecular dynamical simulation. Then, using the fragment-based drug design method, some fragments from the existing SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 inhibitors were selected to replace the original P2 and P3 fragments, resulting in some new molecules. Among them, two molecules (O-74 and N-98) were confirmed by molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation, and ADMET properties prediction was employed for further verification. The results shown that they presented excellent activity and physicochemical properties, and had the potential to be new inhibitors for SARS-CoV-2 main protease.

RESUMO

The binding of the spike glycoprotein (S protein) in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) to angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is the main pathway that leads to serious coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. In the biomedical applications of various nanomaterials, black phosphorus nanosheets (BP) have been receiving increasing attention owing to their excellent characteristics. In this study, the biological effect of BP on the interaction between the S protein and ACE2 was investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. The results indicated that the ACE2 could be quickly and stably adsorbed on the BP surface by non-specific binding and retain its structural integrity. Compared with the case without BP, the interaction of the S protein bound to ACE2 adsorbed on the BP surface was greatly weakened, including hydrogen bonds, salt bridges, and van der Waals forces. This study not only reveals that BP could effectively obstruct the binding of S protein and ACE2, which may provide a potential and reasonable drug carrier to further enhance the curative effect of inhibitors against SARS-CoV-2 infection, but also presents a novel interference mechanism for protein-protein interactions caused by nanomaterials.

RESUMO

AIM: To investigate predictors affecting survival in patients with spontaneously ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma (srHCC). METHODS: One-hundred-and-twenty-seven patients experiencing srHCC between January 2010 and December 2020 were enrolled. The clinical features, treatments, and outcomes were reviewed. Statistics included univariate analysis, Kaplan-Meier analysis, multivariate analysis using Cox proportional hazards model and logistic regression model, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. RESULTS: Of the 127 srHCC patients, 24, 42, and 61 patients received conservative treatment, surgical treatment, and transarterial chemoembolization/embolization (TACE/TAE) treatment at HCC rupture, respectively. The largest tumor size [hazard ratio (HR) 1.127; p < 0.001], Barcelona-Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stage (HR 2.184, p = 0.023), international normalized ratio (INR; HR 3.895; p = 0.012), total bilirubin level (TBil; HR 1.014; p = 0.014), TACE after rupture (compared with conservative treatment) (HR 0.549; p = 0.029), TACE/TAE and surgery at rupture, and albumin level (HR 0.949; p = 0.017) were independent predictors affecting overall survival. A survival predictive model for HCC rupture (SPHR) using these predictors was created. ROC analysis showed that the area under the curve (AUC) of the SPHR model for 30 day survival was 0.925, and the AUCs of the model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score and Child-Pugh score for 30 day survival were 0.767 and 0.757, respectively. CONCLUSION: The largest tumor size, advanced BCLC stage, higher INR and TBil, lower albumin, and conservative treatment were negative independent predictors for overall survival. The SPHR model may be more suitable than the MELD score and Child-Pugh score for predicting 30 day survival in srHCC.

RESUMO

As one of the important factors in chemical production, catalyst content directly affects the process of reaction and the quality of products. The quantitative analysis of trace catalyst in homogeneous reaction system is still faced with great challenges. In this work, a simple and effective approach to the rapid determination of trace homogeneous catalyst (THC) was proposed based on UV-vis spectrophotometry. Wavelet transform and Tchebichef curve moment methods were combined with gray wolf algorithm to extract the feature information from the original UV-vis spectra of samples. Then the partial least-squares model was established. The predictive correlation coefficient (Rp2) was 0.9842, and the limit of quantification was 0.07 ‰. The intra-day and inter-day precision were 3.97 % and 4.36 %, respectively. The spiked recoveries of three different concentrations in actual samples were between 97.6 and 101.9 %. The results indicated that the obtained model was satisfactory and could be used in practical measurement. Compared with the conventional modeling methods, the proposed approach was more accurate and reliable, which provided a feasible new pathway for enterprise product quality control.

RESUMO

Reconstruction of cheek skin defects is surgically challenging. We evaluated the outcomes of using cheek skin remaining in the scar area for treating donor site wounds following the repair of cheek skin defects using full-thickness skin. We conducted a retrospective case series study that included 12 patients with a scar of the cheek. The patients included seven females and five males. The donor site was treated using the cheek skin remaining in the scar area following repair of the cheek skin defect with a full-thickness skin graft from the inner side of the upper arm. Minor flap necrosis of the full-thickness skin graft in the cheek developed in one patient. The postoperative esthetic results were excellent and satisfactory in 11 and 1 patient, respectively. Patients were followed up for 18-32 months; no lagophthalmos or ectropion was noted. However, there were two cases of hyperpigmentation in cheek grafts, and two of graft hypertrophy in the arm. The facial skin remaining in the scar area can be used to treat donor site wounds following a full-thickness skin graft from the inner side of the upper arm to repair a large cheek skin defect.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of the multi-institutional retrospective study was to evaluate whether intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) has advantages in the treatment of patients with locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC) compared with concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 103 patients with LAPC whom was treated with IORT (Arm A; n = 50) or CCRT (Arm B; n = 53) from 2015.6 to 2016.7 were retrospectively identified. Data on feasibility, toxicity, and overall survival (OS) were evaluated. RESULTS: Most factors of the two cohorts were similar. The severe adverse events (grade 3 and 4) patients in Arm B were higher than patients in Arm A (34% vs 0%). Disease progression was noted in 38 patients (76%) in Arm A and 37 patients (69.8%) in Arm B. The median survival of patients in Arm A and B were 15.3 months (95% CI, 13.0-17.6 months) and 13.8 months (95% CI, 11.0-16.6 months), respectively. The 1-year survival rate were 66.3% in Arm A (95% CI, 52.3%-80.2%) and 60.9% in Arm B (95% CI, 46.4%-75.4%). There was no significant difference in OS between patients treated with IORT and with CCRT (p = 0.458). CONCLUSION: Our results demonstrated that patients with LAPC treated with IORT showed fewer adverse events, less treatment time, and high feasibility compared to CCRT. Although, IORT has no advantages in survival and tumor control compared with CCRT.

RESUMO

Metal phosphides (MPs) with unique and desirable physicochemical properties provide promising potential in practical applications, such as the catalysis, gas/humidity sensor, environmental remediation, and energy storage fields, especially for transition metal phosphides (TMPs) and MPs consisting of group IIIA and IVA metal elements. Most studies, however, on the synthesis of MP nanomaterials still face intractable challenges, encompassing the need for a more thorough understanding of the growth mechanism, strategies for large-scale synthesis of targeted high-quality MPs, and practical achievement of functional applications. This review aims at providing a comprehensive update on the controllable synthetic strategies for MPs from various metal sources. Additionally, different passivation strategies for engineering the structural and electronic properties of MP nanostructures are scrutinized. Then, we showcase the implementable applications of MP-based materials in emerging sustainable catalytic fields including electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, mild thermocatalysis, and related hybrid systems. Finally, we offer a rational perspective on future opportunities and remaining challenges for the development of MPs in the materials science and sustainable catalysis fields.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: When treating actinic cheilitis (AC), it is essential to minimize the risk of malignant transformation (MT) and maintain lip functionality and cosmesis. AIMS: We evaluated the outcomes of vermilionectomy followed by reconstruction of the vermilion mucosa using allograft dermal matrix (ADM) in patients with AC of the lower lip. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated eight patients with lower lip AC who underwent vermilion mucosa reconstruction using ADM after vermilionectomy. We enrolled five males and three females ranging in age from 55 to 70 years (mean, 62.1 years). The ADM ranged in area from 1.3 × 5.0 to 1.7 × 5.8 cm (median, 1.6 × 5.5 cm). All patients were followed up for at least 3 months postoperatively by a panel of three surgeons who assessed the esthetic results, and orbicularis oris and speech functions. RESULTS: All patients underwent successful reconstruction of the vermilion mucosa using ADM after vermilionectomy, without complications. The postoperative esthetic results, and the orbicularis oris and speech functions, were satisfactory to excellent in all patients. Patients were followed up for 18-38 months (median, 26.1 months). No MT or recurrence was noted. CONCLUSIONS: Vermilionectomy followed by reconstruction of the vermilion mucosa with ADM is safe and feasible for AC patients.
