BACKGROUND: The mental health of university students during the COVID-19 pandemic has attracted the attention of researchers. For the present study researchers constructed a mediation model to explore the relationship between psychological resilience and post-traumatic growth, the mediating role of negative emotions and the moderating role of deliberate rumination in students. METHODS: The Psychological Resilience Scale, Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale (DASS-21) and Event Related Rumination Inventory were used in a survey of 881 college students. The data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and the PROCESS plugin (version 3.3). RESULTS: (1) Psychological resilience is positively related with post-traumatic growth. Deliberate rumination is positively related to psychological resilience, posttraumatic growth, and negative emotions. Psychological resilience, post-traumatic growth and negative emotions are negatively related. (2) Negative emotions mediated the relationship between psychological resilience and post-traumatic growth. (3) Deliberate rumination plays a moderating role in psychological resilience affecting negative emotions. Deliberate rumination plays a moderating role in the extent to which psychological resilience influences PTG through negative emotions. CONCLUSIONS: Psychological resilience affects post-traumatic growth directly and also indirectly through negative emotions. With the increase of mental resilience, the level of negative emotion tended to decrease. When individuals are experiencing negative emotions, high levels of active rumination are more likely to promote post-traumatic growth. This study helps to explore the factors affecting the mental health of college students during the epidemic, thus providing guidance for appropriate mental health interventions.

Background: Neuroinflammation plays an important role following intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated pyroptosis contributes to the mechanism of neuroinflammation. It has been reported that dendritic cell-associated C-type lectin-1 (Dectin-1) activation triggers inflammation in neurological diseases. However, the role of Dectin-1 on NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated pyroptosis after ICH remains unclear. Here, we aimed to explore the effect of Dectin-1 on NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated pyroptosis and neuroinflammation after ICH. Methods: Adult male C57BL/6 mice were used to establish the ICH model. Laminarin, an inhibitor of Dectin-1, was administered for intervention. Expression of Dectin-1 was evaluated by Western blot and immunofluorescence. Brain water content and neurobehavioral function were tested to assess brain edema and neurological performance. Western blot was conducted to evaluate the level of GSDMD-N. ELISA kits were used to measure the levels of IL-1ß and IL-18. qRT-PCR and Western blot were performed to evaluate the expressions of NLRP3 inflammasome, IL-1ß, and IL-18. Results: The expression of Dectin-1 increased following ICH, and Dectin-1 was expressed on microglia. In addition, inhibition of Dectin-1 by laminarin decreased brain edema and neurological impairment after ICH. Moreover, inhibition of Dectin-1 decreased the expression of pyroptosis-related protein, GSDMD-N, and inflammatory cytokines (IL-1ß and IL-18). Mechanistically, Dectin-1 blockade inhibits NLRP3 inflammasome activation, thereby alleviating neuroinflammatory injury by attenuating NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated pyroptosis both in vivo and in vitro. Conclusion: Our study indicates that the inhibition of Dectin-1 alleviates neuroinflammation by attenuating NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated pyroptosis after ICH.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to use a moderated mediation model to understand and examine the relationship between negative emotions and creativity among college students during the COVID-19 pandemic, using psychological resilience as a mediator and posttraumatic growth as a moderator. METHODS: A sample of 881 college students in mainland China completed a self-report questionnaire that included four scales: the Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale, Psychological Resilience Scale, Runco Ideational Behavior Scale and Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. RESULTS: Findings indicated that:(1) negative emotions were a strong predictor of creativity; (2) psychological resilience partially mediated the association between negative emotions and creativity; and (3) posttraumatic growth moderated the positive effect of psychological resilience, such that the indirect effect between negative emotions and creativity via psychological resilience was stronger for someone with a low level of resilience. CONCLUSION: The findings further clarify the mechanisms that affect the relationship between negative emotions and creativity among college students.

Purpose: This study used a moderated mediation model to explore the relationship between general self-efficacy (GSE) and psychological resilience (PR) and the associated mechanisms, the mediating role of posttraumatic growth (PTG), and the moderating role of deliberate rumination (DR) during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Knowledge of the relationship between these four variables examined further understanding of the PR improvement mechanism of college students and even the general public. Methods: The college students who participated in this study came from an independent college in Guangdong Province, China. A total of 918 college students completed the survey, and the final data sample size was 881. SPSS 23.0 and PROCESS (version 3.3) were used to conduct Pearson's correlation analysis and hierarchical regression linear analysis on the data. Results: (1) The correlation analysis showed that GSE and PR were positively correlated and that PTG was positively correlated with GSE and PR. DR was positively correlated with GSE, PTG, and PR. (2) The results of mediation analysis showed that GSE had a direct predictive effect on DR, and PTG partially mediated the relationship between the two. (3) The results of moderating effect analysis showed that DR hindered the effect of GSE on PTG but enhanced the positive impact of PTG on PR. Conclusions: General self-efficacy can improve PR under the mediating influence of PTG. DR played a positive moderating role in the relationship between GSE and PTG, and played a negative moderating role in the relationship between PTG and PR. These results advance the understanding of the mechanism between GSE and PR.

Purpose: This study used a moderated mediation model to test the mediating effect of general self-efficacy on the relationship between post-traumatic growth (PTG) and creativity and the moderating effect of deliberate rumination in the second path of the indirect mediation path during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A sample of 881 university students from Guangdong Province, China, was surveyed with the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, the Runco Ideational Behavior Scale, the General Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Deliberate Rumination Inventory. SPSS (23 version) and PROCESS (3.3 version) were used for correlation analyses, mediation analysis, and moderated mediation analysis. Results: (1) PTG was positively correlated with creativity, self-efficacy, and deliberate rumination. Creativity was positively correlated with self-efficacy and deliberate rumination. Deliberate rumination was positively correlated with self-efficacy. (2) Self-efficacy mediated the relationship between PTG and creativity. (3) Deliberate rumination moderated the second half of the path of "PTG → self-efficacy → creativity." Conclusions: PTG affected creativity directly and also indirectly through self-efficacy. In particular, deliberate rumination moderated the relationship between self-efficacy and creativity, such that the association was stronger when the incidence of deliberate rumination was low. These results provide a more comprehensive understanding of the positive link between PTG and creativity.

Purpose: The pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which has had a significant impact on people's lives, has apparently increased the incidence of depression. Although the topic of how depression affects creativity is contested, previous research has revealed a significant relationship between the two. The purpose of this study is to further investigate the relationship and the mechanisms that operate between depression and creativity. Methods: A total of 881 students at an independent college in China completed a questionnaire consisting of the Self-Reported Depression Scale, Runco Ideational Behavior Scale, Psychological Resilience Scale, Deliberate Rumination Scale and demographic information. Among the respondents, 317 (36.0%) were male and 564 (64.0%) were female, all of whom were from the same grade. Correlation analyses were conducted, and then the researchers carried out mediation analysis and developed a moderated mediation model. Results: The results indicated that (a) depression was positively related to creativity (r = 0.085, p < 0.05); (b) psychological resilience mediated the relationship between depression and creativity; specifically, psychological resilience was negatively related to depression (r = -0.462, p < 0.01), which in turn was positively related to creativity (r = 0.198, p < 0.01); and (c) deliberate rumination moderated the relationship between depression and psychological resilience, showing a significant negative correlation with depression (r = 0.138, p < 0.01), psychological resilience (r = 0.078, p < 0.05), and creativity (r = 0.288, p < 0.05); specifically, higher levels of deliberate rumination strengthened the negative correlation between psychological resilience and depression. Conclusion: The results suggest that depression is a positive predictor of creativity and may promote creativity to some extent. Further, individuals with greater psychological resilience are more creative than those with less psychological resilience, as it is a question of whether they can and to what extent they can effectively use depression as an emotional resource. Last, an individual's level of deliberate rumination moderates the mediating process, especially at the stage where depression is associated with psychological resilience. These findings advance understanding of the mechanisms that operate between depression and creativity.

BACKGROUND: This study was aimed to investigate the associations among Chitinase 3-like 1 (CHI3L1) polymorphisms, asthma and plasma YKL-40 levels in Chinese population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Four CHI3L1 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were genotyped. The YKL-40 level in plasma and eosinophil percentage in peripheral blood were quantified. RESULTS: A SNP (rs4950928) in the CHI3L1 promoter was associated with elevated plasma YKL-40 levels (p = .02), asthma (p = .042) and lung function (p = .029 to .002) in this Chinese population. Plasma YKL-40 levels were significantly elevated in patients with asthma compared to those in control subjects (p < .05). Plasma YKL-40 levels were significantly correlated with forced expiratory volume per cent (FEV1%) measurements (p < .05). Although plasma YKL-40 levels were decreased after treatment, the correlation with FEV1% still existed. CONCLUSIONS: CHI3L1 locus is a risk factor for asthma in Chinese population.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlation between MD-1 gene single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and bronchial asthma in adults of the Han nationality in Southern China as well as their lung functions. METHODS: From 2006 to 2010, 332 adult asthmatic patients of the Han nationality diagnosed in Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, and 276 healthy volunteers were recruited for the study. The SNPs of MD-1 gene loci rs2233128 and rs7740529 were genotyped by using MassARRAY-IPLEX technology and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry platform (MALDI-TOF-MS). In addition, the lung function of 105 cases initially diagnosed with asthma was measured. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in sex (χ(2) = 0.50, P = 0.824) and age (t = 0.930, P = 0.357) between the asthma and the healthy groups. Genotypes AG and GG were detected in MD-1 gene at rs2233128 locus and genotypes CC, CT and TT at rs7740529 locus in this Han population at Southern China. Genotyping success rate was 94.74%. The rs2233128 genotype distribution (χ(2) = 0.030, P = 0.863) and allele (χ(2) = 0.029, P = 0.865) showed no significant difference between the asthma and the control groups. However, the rs7740529 genotype distribution (χ(2) = 8.681, P = 0.013) and allele (χ(2) = 8.005, P = 0.005) were significantly different in the asthma group as compared to the control group. Compared with the TT genotype, the rs7740529 of the CC and CC + CT genotypes could dramatically increase the risk of asthma, the odds ratio (95% confidence interval) being 2.451 (1.299 - 4.9626) and 2.172 (1.173 - 4.020), respectively. In the 105 patients initially diagnosed with asthma, FVC% and FEV(1)% were significantly different among the 3 different genotypes (CC, CT and TT) of the rs7740529 locus (F = 18.405, P = 0.000 and F = 25.700, P = 0.000). The percentages of predicted value of FVC and FEV(1) were decreased [(65 ± 12)%, (64 ± 11)%] in the CC genotype as compared to the TT genotypes [(86 ± 9)%, (88 ± 8)%], P < 0.05. There was no significant difference of genotype distribution of rs7740529 in different grades of severity of newly diagnosed asthma (χ(2) = 5.017, P = 0.081). CONCLUSIONS: MD-1 may be a susceptible gene for adult asthma in a Southern Han population in China. Genotype distribution of rs7740529 locus in newly diagnosed patients with asthma may be related to their lung function changes.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical indications of asthma control test (ACT). METHODS: A total of 120 asthmatic patients with a diagnosis in line with the American Thoracic Society criteria and treated for over a month were enrolled in this study. The patients were asked to complete a survey to assess their symptoms and asthma attacks, and ACT evaluation was conducted by physicians familiar with ACT evaluation. The patients were classified into two groups based on the pulmonary function test (positive for bronchodilator test and provocation test) or based on disease severity (mild and moderate-to-severe asthma groups). The effect of ACT evaluation was graded as good (no less than 4 item available for evaluation), fair (2-3 items available) and poor (no more than 1 item). To further analyze the ACT sensitivity in relation to different disease severity, 29 asthmatic patients with an initial diagnosis and BDT positivity were included, and the ACT score of the patients with mild, moderate and severe asthma based on FEV1% were compared. RESULTS: In patients positive for bronchodilator test, good, fair and poor evaluation effects were found in 48, 15, and 5 cases, as compared to 10, 15, and 27 in those positive for provocation test, respectively, showing significant differences between the two groups (P < 0.001). In mild asthma group, good, fair and poor evaluation effects were found in 12, 15, and 18 cases, respectively, significantly different from those in moderate-to- severe asthma group (50, 21, and 4 cases, P < 0.001). ACT scores showed a positive correlation to FEV1% in 29 patients with positive BDT (r = 0.55, P = 0.003). ACT scores had no significant difference between mild and moderate asthma groups (P > 0.05), but showed significant differences between mild and severe groups (P = 0.009) and between moderate and severe groups (P = 0.008). CONCLUSION: ACT is more suitable for evaluating patients positive for bronchodilator test or with moderate to severe asthma.
