RESUMO

The electrokinetic (EK) process has been proposed for soil decontamination from heavy metals and organic matter. The advantages of the EK process include the low operating energy, suitability for fine-grained soil decontamination, and no need for excavation. During the last three decades, enhanced and hybrid EK systems were developed and tested for improving the efficiency of contaminants removal from soils. Chemically enhanced-EK processes exhibited excellent efficiency in removing contaminants by controlling the soil pH or the chemical reaction of contaminants. EK hybrid systems were tested to overcome environmental hurdles or technical drawbacks of decontamination technologies. Hybridization of the EK process with phytoremediation, bioremediation, or reactive filter media (RFM) improved the remediation process performance by capturing contaminants or facilitating biological agents' movement in the soil. Also, EK process coupling with solar energy was proposed to treat off-grid contaminated soils or reduce the EK energy requirements. This study reviews recent advancements in the enhancement and hybrid EK systems for soil remediation and the type of contaminants targeted by the process. The study also covered the impact of operating parameters, imperfect pollution separation, and differences in the physicochemical characteristics and microstructure of soil/sediment on the EK performance. Finally, a comparison between various remediation processes was presented to highlight the pros and cons of these technologies.

RESUMO

The aquaporin superfamily of hydrophobic integral membrane proteins constitutes water channels essential to the movement of water across the cell membrane, maintaining homeostatic equilibrium. During the passage of water between the extracellular and intracellular sides of the cell, aquaporins act as ultra-sensitive filters. Owing to their hydrophobic nature, aquaporins self-assemble in phospholipids. If a proper choice of lipids is made then the aquaporin biomimetic membrane can be used in the design of an artificial kidney. In combination with graphene, the aquaporin biomimetic membrane finds practical application in desalination and water recycling using mostly Escherichia coli AqpZ. Recently, human aquaporin 1 has emerged as an important biomarker in renal cell carcinoma. At present, the ultra-sensitive sensing of renal cell carcinoma is cumbersome. Hence, we discuss the use of epitopes from monoclonal antibodies as a probe for a point-of-care device for sensing renal cell carcinoma. This device works by immobilizing the antibody on the surface of a single-layer graphene, that is, as a microfluidic device for sensing renal cell carcinoma.

RESUMO

This paper presents a study on the potential of osmotic energy for power production. The study includes both pilot plant testing and theoretical modelling as well as cost estimation. A projected cost of £30/MWh of clean electricity could be achieved by using a Hydro-Osmotic Power (HOP) plant if a suitable membrane is used and the osmotic potential difference between the two solutions is greater than 25 bar; a condition that can be readily found in many sites around the world. Results have shown that the membrane system accounts for 50%-80% of the HOP plant cost depending on the salinity difference level. Thus, further development in membrane technology and identifying suitable membranes would have a significant impact on the feasibility of the process and the route to market. As the membrane permeability determines the HOP process feasibility, this paper also describes the effect of the interaction between the fluid and the membrane on the system permeability. It has been shown that both the fluid physical properties as well as the membrane micro-structural parameters need to be considered if further development of the HOP process is to be achieved.

RESUMO

The effect of many-body interactions on the electrostatic force between spheres in an array of charged spherical particles has been quantified by solving the non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann equation (PBE) using a finite element method (FEM) model. The equation is solved for conditions of constant surface potential. The effect of the dimensionless Debye length scaled radius of the spheres on the electrostatic force between them has been determined and a significant reduction of the force is observed as the dimensionless Debye radius is decreased. Calculations based on the dimensionless separation distance between a pair of charged spheres in isolation confirm an exponential decay of the repulsive electrostatic force as the surface to surface separation distance is increased. In contrast, calculations based on an array of interacting spheres in certain critical packing conditions reveal considerable reduction in the magnitude of the repulsive electrostatic force at separation distances less than half the sphere radius. The latter results are explained by considering the directional cancellation effects of the electrical double layer between adjacent spheres placed in certain orientations within the array. This is believed to be a surprising many-body effect which has been overlooked in previous studies and whose validity can be used to explain the stability and strength of charged sphere arrays under certain critical geometric configurations.

RESUMO

The effect of wall confinement (wall charge and wall-sphere separation distance) on the electrostatic force between two charged spheres confined in a long charged pore in symmetric and asymmetric electrolytes have been quantified by solving the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equation (PBE), using adaptive finite elements combined with error minimization techniques. The computed force indicated the strong effect of the wall potential on the reduction of the repulsive force for all type of electrolytes. The influence of the wall effect was reduced when the valence of the electrolyte was increased. A significant reduction in the repulsive force between the two spheres was also observed when the distance between the pore wall and the sphere surface was reduced. A smaller long-range repulsive interaction was observed between spheres when the solutions contained multivalent counterions as compared with a monovalent solution. However, at short ranges of separation distances multivalent counterions increase the electrostatic repulsive force between the spheres. The effect of the dimensionless radius of the spheres on the electrostatic force between them has been determined and a significant reduction observed as the dimensionless radius was reduced.
