RESUMO

PURPOSE: Studies have shown that inflammation plays a key role in etiology of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, human studies which have evaluated association between PD and serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1ß) have reported conflicting results. In this study, serum and striatum levels of these cytokines were evaluated in 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) animal model of PD. METHOD: The neurotoxin of 6-OHDA was injected into medial forebrain bundle of right hemisphere and behavioral tests were carried out to eight weeks thereafter to evaluate severity of PD and its progress. Blood was collected before the toxin and in second and eight weeks after that. Survival of dopaminergic (DAergic) neurons in substantia nigra was assessed by immunohistochemistry. TNF-α and IL-1ß levels were determined using ELISA kits. RESULT: Severity of behavioral symptoms was gradually increased in 6-OHDA-treated rats. They showed a decrease in serum TNF-α level in the eight week and increase in IL-1ß both in the second and eight weeks. They were divided into two subgroups, symptomatic and asymptomatic with severe and moderate degrees in DAergic neuronal death. Significant decrease in serum TNF-α was only observed in the symptomatic subgroup but IL-1ß increased in both subgroups. Also, striatal levels of both cytokines were higher in the lesioned hemisphere. CONCLUSION: Increase in serum IL-1ß level can reflect moderate degree of lesion in substantia nigra and thereby is used for prognosis of PD before its clinical symptoms are appeared. On the other hand, an increase in serum TNF-α is appeared in advanced stage of PD.

BACKGROUND: Due to the high toxicity of chromium, particularly as Hexavalent chromium Cr (VI), it is removed from industrial effluents before their discharge into the environment by a variety of methods, including loading catalysts onto the polymeric supports. This study focused on the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions using Amberlite XAD7 resin loaded titanium dioxide (Ti-XAD7). METHODS: Ti-XAD7 was synthesized using Amberlite XAD-7 impregnated with titanium tetraethoxide. The prepared Ti-XAD7 was characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Isotherms and kinetic studies were carried out to describe the adsorption behavior of adsorbent for the removal of Cr(VI) ions. Quadratic models considering independent variables, i.e. the initial Cr(VI) concentration, adsorbent dosage, time, and pH, were evaluated and optimized to describe the behavior of Cr(VI) adsorption onto the Ti-XAD7 using RSM based on a Five-level-four-factor CCD approach. RESULTS: The accuracy and the fitting of the model were evaluated by ANOVA with R2 > 0.725 and P value = 5.221 × 10-5. The optimum conditions for the adsorption process were an initial Cr(VI) concentration 2750 ppb, contact time of 51.53 min, pH of 8.7, and Ti-XAD7 dosage of 5.05 g/L. The results revealed that the Langmuir and Sips isotherm models with R2 = 0.998 and 0.999 were the best models fitting the experimental data. The adsorption capacity of Ti-XAD7 and RL constant were 2.73 mg/g and 0.063-0.076 based on the Langmuir isotherm, respectively. Kinetic studies also indicated that the adsorption behavior of Cr(VI) was acceptably explained by the Elovich kinetic model with a good fitting (R2 = 0.97). CONCLUSIONS: Comparison of the Ti-XAD7 and XAD7 yield in chromium adsorption showed that modified XAD7 had higher removal efficiency (about 98%) compared to XAD7 alone.

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to establish the comparative effects of carbohydrate versus fat restriction on metabolic indices in Type 2 diabetic (T2D) patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). METHODS: This randomized, clinical trial was done among 56 overweight persons with T2D and CHD aged 40-85 years old. The patients were randomly allocated to take either a high-carbohydrate (HC) diet (60-65% carbohydrates and 20-25% fats) (n = 28) or a restricted carbohydrate (RC) diet (43-49% carbohydrate and 36-40% fats) (n = 28) for 8 weeks to determine metabolic status. RESULTS: After 8 weeks of treatment, RC diet decreased fasting plasma glucose (FPG) (-11.5 ± 28.3 vs. +7.0 ± 26.9 mg/dl, P = 0.010) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) (-564.3 ± 1280.1 vs. +286.1 ± 1789.2 ng/ml, P = 0.040) compared with a HC diet. Moreover, compared with a HC diet, RC diet increased total antioxidant capacity (TAC) (+274.8 ± 111.5 vs. +20.2 ± 82.5 mmol/l, P < 0.001) and glutathione (GSH) levels (+51.6 ± 111.5 vs. -32.6 ± 88.5 µmol/l, P = 0.003). No significant alterations between the two groups were found in terms of their effect on other metabolic profiles. CONCLUSION: RC diet in overweight T2D with CHD had beneficial effects on FPG, hs-CRP, TAC, and GSH values.

The application of almond shell as a low cost natural adsorbent to remove Hg(2+) from aqueous solution was investigated. Batch experiments were carried out to evaluate the adsorption capacity of the material. The chemical and physical parameters such as pH, sorbent amount, initial ion concentration, and contact time were optimized for the maximum uptake of mercury onto the solid surface. Adsorption isotherms were expressed by Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models, and the experimental data were found to fit the Langmuir model rather than the Freundlich. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained from the Langmuir isotherm was 135.13 mg/g. A kinetic study was carried out with pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order reaction equations and it was found that the Hg(2+) uptake process followed the pseudo-second-order rate expression. The thermodynamic values, ΔG(0), ΔH(0) and ΔS(0), indicated that adsorption was an endothermic and spontaneous process. The potential of this material for mercury elimination was demonstrated by efficient Hg(2+) removal from a synthetic effluent.
