RESUMO

Layered double hydroxides (LDH) have significant attention in recent times due to their unique characteristic properties, including layered structure, variable compositions, tunable acidity and basicity, memory effect, and their ability to transform into various kinds of catalysts, which make them desirable for various types of catalytic applications, such as electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and thermocatalysis. In addition, the upcycling of lignocellulose biomass and its derived compounds has emerged as a promising strategy for the synthesis of valuable products and fine chemicals. The current review focuses on recent advancements in LDH-based catalysts for biomass conversion reactions. Specifically, this review highlights the structural features and advantages of LDH and LDH-derived catalysts for biomass conversion reactions, followed by a detailed summary of the different synthesis methods and different strategies used to tailor their properties. Subsequently, LDH-based catalysts for hydrogenation, oxidation, coupling, and isomerization reactions of biomass-derived molecules are critically summarized in a very detailed manner. The review concludes with a discussion on future research directions in this field which anticipates that further exploration of LDH-based catalysts and integration of cutting-edge technologies into biomass conversion reactions hold promise for addressing future energy challenges, potentially leading to a carbon-neutral or carbon-positive future.

Metal phosphides are promising catalysts for hydrogenation reactions due to their unique ability to generate active hydrogen species which are essential for desired reactions. In this work, the hydrogenation potential of nickel phosphide (Ni2P) is explored for the transfer hydrogenation of aromatic nitro compounds using hydrazine hydrate as hydrogen source. The Ni2P was supported on activated carbon (AC) to facilitate highly exposed active reaction sites. The as-synthesized Ni2P-AC catalyst showed excellent catalytic potential for the hydrogenation of nitro compounds to corresponding amines with 100% conversion efficiency and resulted in excellent yields. The reaction conditions were optimized by varying different reaction parameters, such as time, temperature, solvents, catalyst amount and hydrogen sources. The developed reaction protocol is highly selective for nitro compounds having reduction susceptible functional groups like -Cl, -Br, -CHO, etc. The structure-activity relationship of the Ni2P-AC was also examined which suggested that both acidic and basic sites present in Ni2P-AC catalyst plays crucial role in hydrogenation reaction. Besides, an in-depth insight into the reaction mechanism illustrates that the reaction proceeds via N-phenyl hydroxylamine as the reaction intermediate. In addition, decent recyclability and stability of Ni2P-AC catalyst demonstrates its highly versatile nature for potential large-scale applications. The use of highly efficient Ni2P-AC catalyst for hydrogenation reactions can lead the way towards sustainable and effective industrial organic catalysis.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most prevalent cancers among men in India. Although studies on PCa have dealt with genetics, genomics, and the environmental influence in the causality of PCa, not many studies employing the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) approaches of PCa have been carried out. In our previous study, we identified some causal genes and mutations specific to Indian PCa using Whole Exome Sequencing (WES). In the recent past, with the help of different cancer consortiums such as The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC), along with differentially expressed genes (DEGs), many cancer-associated novel non-coding RNAs have been identified as biomarkers. In this work, we attempt to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) including long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) associated with signature pathways from an Indian PCa cohort using the RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) approach. From a cohort of 60, we screened six patients who underwent prostatectomy; we performed whole transcriptome shotgun sequencing (WTSS)/RNA-sequencing to decipher the DEGs. We further normalized the read counts using fragments per kilobase of transcript per million mapped reads (FPKM) and analyzed the DEGs using a cohort of downstream regulatory tools, viz., GeneMANIA, Stringdb, Cytoscape-Cytohubba, and cbioportal, to map the inherent signatures associated with PCa. By comparing the RNA-seq data obtained from the pairs of normal and PCa tissue samples using our benchmarked in-house cuffdiff pipeline, we observed some important genes specific to PCa, such as STEAP2, APP, PMEPA1, PABPC1, NFE2L2, and HN1L, and some other important genes known to be involved in different cancer pathways, such as COL6A1, DOK5, STX6, BCAS1, BACE1, BACE2, LMOD1, SNX9, CTNND1, etc. We also identified a few novel lncRNAs such as LINC01440, SOX2OT, ENSG00000232855, ENSG00000287903, and ENST00000647843.1 that need to be characterized further. In comparison with publicly available datasets, we have identified characteristic DEGs and novel lncRNAs implicated in signature PCa pathways in an Indian PCa cohort which perhaps have not been reported. This has set a precedent for us to validate candidates further experimentally, and we firmly believe this will pave a way toward the discovery of biomarkers and the development of novel therapies.

One of the important industrial processes commonly employed in the pharmaceutical, explosive, and plastic manufacturing industries is ipso-hydroxylation of arylboronic acids. In this work, a straightforward, metal-free methodology for the synthesis of phenols from arylboronic acids has been demonstrated using hydroxyl functionalized boron nitride (BN-OH) nanosheets. The functionalized hydroxyl groups on the BN nanosheets act as the active sites for the hydroxylation reaction to take place. The detailed optimization of reaction parameters was done in order to attain high catalytic efficiency, and the reactions were conducted in water, which eliminates the use of toxic solvents. The as-synthesized catalysts exhibited excellent recyclability and reusability in addition to high product yields and good turnover numbers. The green metrics parameters were also evaluated for the model reaction to examine the sustainable nature of the developed protocol. The use of BN-OH catalysts for the ipso-hydroxylation reactions under base-free and metal-free conditions using environmentally benign solvents is utmost desired for industrial processes and can pave a way toward sustainable organic catalysis.

Transition metal phosphides (TMP) posses unique physiochemical, geometrical, and electronic properties, which can be exploited for different catalytic applications, such as photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, organic catalysis, etc. Among others, the use of TMP for organic catalysis is less explored and still facing many complex challenges, which necessitate the development of sustainable catalytic reaction protocols demonstrating high selectivity and yield of the desired molecules of high significance. In this regard, the controlled synthesis of TMP-based catalysts and thorough investigations of underlying reaction mechanisms can provide deeper insights toward practical achievement of desired applications. This review aims at providing a comprehensive analysis on the recent advancements in the synthetic strategies for the tailored and tunable engineering of structural, geometrical, and electronic properties of TMP. In addition, their unprecedented catalytic potential toward different organic transformation reactions is succinctly summarized and critically analyzed. Finally, a rational perspective on future opportunities and challenges in the emerging field of organic catalysis is provided. On the account of the recent achievements accomplished in organic synthesis using TMP, it is highly anticipated that the use of TMP combined with advanced innovative technologies and methodologies can pave the way toward large scale realization of organic catalysis.

Background: Currently, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is commonly used as a prostate cancer (PCa) biomarker. PSA is linked to some factors that frequently lead to erroneous positive results or even needless biopsies of elderly people. Objectives: In this pilot study, we undermined the potential genes and mutations from several databases and checked whether or not any putative prognostic biomarkers are central to the annotation. The aim of the study was to develop a risk prediction model that could help in clinical decision-making. Methods: An extensive literature review was conducted, and clinical parameters for related comorbidities, such as diabetes, obesity, as well as PCa, were collected. Such parameters were chosen with the understanding that variations in their threshold values could hasten the complicated process of carcinogenesis, more particularly PCa. The gathered data was converted to semi-binary data (-1, -0.5, 0, 0.5, and 1), on which machine learning (ML) methods were applied. First, we cross-checked various publicly available datasets, some published RNA-seq datasets, and our whole-exome sequencing data to find common role players in PCa, diabetes, and obesity. To narrow down their common interacting partners, interactome networks were analysed using GeneMANIA and visualised using Cytoscape, and later cBioportal was used (to compare expression level based on Z scored values) wherein various types of mutation w.r.t their expression and mRNA expression (RNA seq FPKM) plots are available. The GEPIA 2 tool was used to compare the expression of resulting similarities between the normal tissue and TCGA databases of PCa. Later, top-ranking genes were chosen to demonstrate striking clustering coefficients using the Cytoscape-cytoHubba module, and GEPIA 2 was applied again to ascertain survival plots. Results: Comparing various publicly available datasets, it was found that BLM is a frequent player in all three diseases, whereas comparing publicly available datasets, GWAS datasets, and published sequencing findings, SPFTPC and PPIMB were found to be the most common. With the assistance of GeneMANIA, TMPO and FOXP1 were found as common interacting partners, and they were also seen participating with BLM. Conclusion: A probabilistic machine learning model was achieved to identify key candidates between diabetes, obesity, and PCa. This, we believe, would herald precision scale modeling for easy prognosis.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac remodeling and diastolic dysfunction may occur, in women with early-onset preeclampsia, following raised total vascular resistance in response to the impaired placentation. These changes can increase the risk of premature cardiac morbidity and mortality later in life. According to updated guidelines by the American and European Societies of Echocardiography (ASE/ESE) to diagnose diastolic dysfunction, using a simpler criterion is not yet used in pregnant women. OBJECTIVE: To compare the maternal cardiovascular changes and the variation in the diastolic dysfunction using the 2009 and 2016 criteria by ASE/ESE among women with early onset preeclampsia and gestational age-matched normotensive controls. METHODS: A prospective matched cross-sectional study conducted in a tertiary hospital in South India, involving 40 women with early and 40 women with gestational age-matched normotensive controls. Cardiac function and remodeling were assessed by conventional 2D, M-mode, and Doppler echocardiography. RESULTS: Compared to the controls, women with early-onset preeclampsia had significantly higher. Total vascular resistance index (2867.6 vs. 2277.2 dynes/s/cm5/m2, p = .035) and median end-systolic stress index (5.2 vs. 9.2 dyne/cm2/m2), suggesting a higher afterload. Cases had a significant rate of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction using the 2009 criteria (grade II/III: 21 (52%) vs. 0 (0%), p<.001) whereas the rates were much lower when the updated 2016 guidelines were used (grade II/III: 9 (22.5%) vs. 1 (2.5%), p<.001). CONCLUSIONS: In women with early-onset preeclampsia, cardiovascular adaption occurs to minimize wall stress and myocardial oxygenation. The prevalence of diastolic dysfunction was observed to be lower with the 2016 criteria. Further studies involving pregnant women are required to assess the impact of newer guidelines on association with short- and long-term cardiovascular outcomes in high-risk women.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to report the outcome of cataract surgery with different surgical techniques in eyes with coexisting coloboma and to define factors of prognostic importance. Methods: Retrospective case sheet review of patients presenting between January 2016 and December 2018, who underwent cataract surgery in eyes with coexisting coloboma. Results: Of the 3,30,231 cases operated during the study period, 280 eyes of 276 patients had associated colobomatous malformation. The prevalence of coloboma in eyes undergoing cataract surgery was 0.085%. The mean age of the patients was 46.4 years (range 19 -88 years). Phacoemulsification (PE) was performed in 130 eyes (46.4%), manual small incision cataract surgery (M-SICS) was done in 115 eyes (41.1%), and 35 eyes (12.5%) underwent intra capsular cataract extraction. Intra-operative complications were noted in 26 (9%) eyes. Incidence of intra-operative and post-operative complications was comparable between PE and M-SICS groups (p = 0.94). The mean corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) improved from logMAR 1.71 ± 0.62 to 0.87 ± 0.61 (p = 0.00009). On multivariate analysis, microcornea (p = 0.002), type 1 and 2 coloboma (p < 0.001), and intraoperative complications (p = 0.001) were associated with poor visual outcome. Conclusion: Favorable functional outcomes can be achieved with phacoemulsification in eyes with softer cataract and corneal diameter >8 mm and with M-SICS in eyes with hard cataracts and corneal diameter of 6-8 mm. PE should be considered as the primary choice whenever permissible by the corneal diameter and severity of nuclear sclerosis. Poor functional outcomes were seen in eyes with smaller corneal diameter, extensive chorioretinal coloboma, and intraoperative complications.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the third most common cancer among men in India, and no next-generation sequencing (NGS) studies have been attempted earlier. Recent advances in NGS have heralded the discovery of biomarkers from Caucasian/European and Chinese ancestry, but not much is known about the Indian phenotype/variant of PCa. In a pilot study using the whole exome sequencing of benign/PCa patients, we identified characteristic mutations specific to the Indian sub-population. We observed a large number of mutations in DNA repair genes, viz. helicases, TP53, and BRCA besides the variants of unknown significance with a possibly damaging rare variant (rs730881069/chr19:55154172C/TR136Q) in the TNNI3 gene that has been previously reported as a semi-conservative amino acid substitution. Our pilot study attempts to bring an understanding of PCa prognosis and recurrence for the Indian phenotype.

In the present investigation, several residues from agro-forestry industries such as rice straw acid hydrolysate, corn cob acid hydrolysate, tomato juice, cane molasses and orange pulp were evaluated as the economical source for the production of bacterial cellulose. The bacterial cellulose attained the significant yield of 7.8 g/L using tomato juice, followed by 3.6 g/L using cane molasses and 2.8 g/L using orange pulp after 7 days of incubation. Furthermore, the optimum pH and temperature of fermentation for maximum production of bacterial cellulose was 4.5 and 30 ±â€¯1 °C. The identified bacterium Acetobacter pasteurianus RSV-4 has been deposited at repository under the accession number MTCC 25117. The produced bacterial cellulose was characterized through FTIR, SEM, TGA and DSC and found to be of very good quality. The bacterial cellulose produced by identified strain on these various agro-waste residues could be a cost effective technology for commercial its production.

BACKGROUND: The study aim was to investigate the immediate and long-term results of balloon aortic valvuloplasty (BAV) in young patients (aged ≤20 years) with congenital bicuspid aortic valve presenting with severe aortic stenosis. METHODS: The study involved a single tertiary care center-based retrospective data analysis of immediate and long-term outcomes in patients following balloon valvuloplasty between 2000 and 2011. A total of 92 young patients (mean age 12.7 years; 95% CI 8.3-16.7 years) with aortic stenosis due to congenital bicuspid aortic valve and who underwent BAV were studied. RESULTS: The mean follow up period was 5.7 ± 1.3 years. Intervention resulted in successful BAV (≥50% reduction in baseline gradient) in 79 patients (85.9%; group A) and partially successful BAV (<50% reduction in baseline gradient) in eight patients (8.7%; group B). BAV failed in five patients (5.4%; group C). The mean left ventricular systolic pressure was decreased from 155.6 mmHg (95% CI 132.7-186.3 mmHg) to 100.9 mmHg (95% CI 82.1-119.6 mmHg; p <0.001), and the mean aortic valve gradient from 40.7 mmHg (95% CI 25.12-56.22 mmHg) to 17.2 mmHg (95% CI 15.83- 21.23 mmHg; p <0.001). Mean changes in aortic valve area and mean gradient were significantly different between successful BAV groups (A and B) and the failed BAV group (p = 0.001). Different grades of aortic regurgitation were noted in 32 patients (34.78%) after BAV (severe regurgitation in 2.18%). A post hoc analysis showed sustained gradient reductions at one- and five-year follow up investigations (p <0.05). The need for surgery was much lower in the successful BAV groups. CONCLUSIONS: The success of BAV in bicuspid aortic valve stenosis in younger patients was approximately 85%. Although 10% of patients developed re-stenosis and required surgical intervention, the majority did well during the follow up period. It was concluded that BAV is a viable option in adolescents and young children with bicuspid aortic valve without severe calcification.

CONTEXT: Selection of first help in psychiatric illnesses depends on various sociodemographic and environmental factors. In integrated societies like India careers also contribute in deciding help-seeking behavior of psychiatric patients. In this study, we explored these factors and the role of education of decision maker, i.e., person who is final authority in deciding the course of management. AIMS: This study aims to study sociocultural factors and patterns of help-seeking behavior of psychiatric patients in rural sub-Himalayan region. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: A cross-sectional study conducted in a tertiary care teaching hospital. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Factors affecting help-seeking behavior such as age, sex, education, occupation, income, accessibility to psychiatric treatment, expenses on faith healers and general practitioners, and education of "decision maker were assessed. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: Data were analyzed with GraphPad InStat, using appropriate statistical tests. RESULTS: In this study of 250 patients, psychiatrists were chosen as first help by 98 (39%), faith healers by 84 (34%), and general medical practitioners (GMPs) by 68 (27%) patients. Mean "years of education" of patients in psychiatrist group, faith healer group, and GMP group were 9.98, 8.81, and 7.99, respectively (P = 0.08). Mean "years of education" of decision makers for these groups were 11.64, 8.36, and 10.93, respectively (P < 0.001). Time required in reaching psychiatric facility form the residence of patient was maximum in those who consulted faith healers first compared to those who consulted psychiatrist (P < 0.001) or GMP (P < 0.01). Expenses on faith healers were significantly high compared to GMPs (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Psychiatrists, faith healers, and GMPs were equally chosen as first help for psychiatric illness. Education of decision maker and accessibility affect help-seeking behavior significantly. Faith healers were more expensive than GMPs.

The vortex structures in a cloud of electrically suspended dust in a streaming plasma constitutes a driven system with a rich nonlinear flow regime. Experimentally recovered toroidal formations of this system have motivated study of its volumetrically driven-dissipative vortex flow dynamics using two-dimensional hydrodynamics in the incompressible Navier-Stokes regime. Nonlinear equilibrium solutions are obtained for this system where a nonuniformly driven two-dimensional dust flow exhibits distinct regions of localized accelerations and strong friction caused by stationary fluids at the confining boundaries resisting the dust flow. In agreement with observations in experiments, it is demonstrated that the nonlinear effects appear in the limit of small viscosity, where the primary vortices form scaling with the most dominant spatial scales of the domain topology and develop separated virtual boundaries along their periphery. This separation is triggered beyond a critical dust viscosity that signifies a structural bifurcation. Emergence of uniform vorticity core and secondary vortices with a newer level of identical dynamics highlights the applicability of the studied dynamics to gigantic vortex flows, such as the Jovian great red spot, to microscopic biophysical intracellular activity.

We study the effect of time delay on the dynamics of a system of repulsively coupled nonlinear oscillators that are configured as a geometrically frustrated network. In the absence of time delay, frustrated systems are known to possess a high degree of multistability among a large number of coexisting collective states except for the fully synchronized state that is normally obtained for attractively coupled systems. Time delay in the coupling is found to remove this constraint and to lead to such a synchronized ground state over a range of parameter values. A quantitative study of the variation of frustration in a system with the amount of time delay has been made and a universal scaling behavior is found. The variation in frustration as a function of the product of time delay and the collective frequency of the system is seen to lie on a characteristic curve that is common for all natural frequencies of the identical oscillators and coupling strengths. Thus time delay can be used as a tuning parameter to control the amount of frustration in a system and thereby influence its collective behavior. Our results can be of potential use in a host of practical applications in physical and biological systems in which frustrated configurations and time delay are known to coexist.

Flow structure of a dust medium electrostatically suspended and confined in a plasma presents a unique setup where the spatial scale of a volumetric drive by the plasma flow might exceed that of the boundaries confining the dust. By means of a formal implementation of a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model to a confined dust flow and its analytic curvilinear solutions, it is shown that the eigenmode spectrum of the dust vortex flow can lose correlations with the driving field even at the low dust Reynolds numbers as a result of strong shear and finer scales introduced in the equilibrium dust vorticity spectrum by the boundaries. While the boundary effects can replace the desired turbulent processes unavailable in this regime, the shear observable in most of the dust vortex flows is identified to have a definite exponent of dependence on the dust viscosity over a substantially large range of the latter. These results and scalings allow quantification of the notion of dusty plasma medium as a paradigm for a wide range of natural flow processes having scales inaccessible to ordinary laboratory experiments.

We investigate the influence of time-delayed coupling on the nature of the aging transition in a system of coupled oscillators that have a mix of active and inactive oscillators, where the aging transition is defined as the gradual loss of collective synchrony as the proportion of inactive oscillators is increased. We start from a simple model of two time-delay coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators that have identical frequencies but are located at different distances from the Hopf bifurcation point. A systematic numerical and analytic study delineates the dependence of the critical coupling strength (at which the system experiences total loss of synchrony) on time delay and the average distance of the system from the Hopf bifurcation point. We find that time delay can act to facilitate the aging transition by lowering the threshold coupling strength for amplitude death in the system. We then extend our study to larger systems of globally coupled active and inactive oscillators including an infinite system in the thermodynamic limit. Our model system and results can provide a useful paradigm for understanding the functional robustness of diverse physical and biological systems that are prone to aging transitions.

Tics are rapid and repetitive muscle contractions resulting in stereotype movements and vocalizations that are experienced as involuntary. Onset before 18-year is a diagnostic criterion for tic disorders. Children and adolescents may exhibit tic behaviors after a stimulus or in response to an internal urge. Tic behaviors increase during physical or an emotional stress. Adult onset tic disorders are reported by infections, drugs, cocaine, toxins, chromosomal disorders, head injury, stroke, neurocutaneous syndromes, neurodegenerative disorders and peripheral injuries. Only few cases have yet been reported having onset after surgery though surgery brings both physical and emotional stress to the patient. We report a case of a 55-year-old lady who developed tic disorder as post-operative event of cataract surgery. Our patient had a dramatic response to haloperidol which is in contrast to all earlier reports.

OBJECTIVES: To compare propofol and thiopental as anesthetic agents for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) with respect to seizure duration, stimulus charge, and clinical effects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Randomized, blinded study of 28 patients of depression treated with bilateral ECT. In group P (n = 14), sedation was achieved with propofol 1.5 mg/kg, whereas in group T (n = 14), it was achieved with thiopentone 3 mg/ kg IV. Succinylcholine 0.4 mg/kg intravenous was given in all patients as for neuromuscular blockade. RESULTS: The mean seizure duration of the patients in the thiopental group was 83 ± 34.43 seconds vs. 94.45 ± 21.37 seconds in the propofol group (P < 0.01). The energy delivered per treatment was 10.88 ± 4.78 J in the thiopental group vs. 12.20 ± 4.53 J in the propofol group (P < 0.05). Number of ECTs required were significantly higher in propofol group (9.71 ± 2.87) as compared to thiopental group (5.86 ± 0.36) P < 0.0001. No significant difference in duration of hospitalization was seen in both groups. The mean score on Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was 29.14 in the thiopental group vs. 29.57 in the propofol group (P > 0.05). The mean score on Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was 7.14 in the thiopental group vs. 3.29 in the propofol group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Propofol significantly increases number of ECT required to treat although the patients received higher electrical charge and had longer seizure duration. BDI scores suggest this resulted in better outcome. Results, however, might be confounded by the differences in pharmacological treatment in the groups.

A source-driven magnetized presheath is analyzed in an obliquely incident magnetic field. The conventional fluid treatments of the collisionless and collisional magnetized presheath use standard fluid equations to recover the velocity profiles that satisfy the Bohm sheath criterion at the electrostatic sheath edge. In a purely source-driven collisionless presheath, however, there is no mechanism to redistribute the change in parallel energy in the perpendicular direction and therefore the boundary values of flow velocities are strong functions of angle of incidence. In the present treatment, numerical solutions are obtained for a set of fluid equations derived from the moment description of a generalized gyrokinetic equation. The density, velocity, and temperature profiles in a source-driven presheath are computed, which show a dependence on the angle of incidence of the magnetic field on a perfectly absorbing solid surface.
