RESUMO

Plasmonic coatings can absorb electromagnetic radiation from visible to far-infrared spectrum for the better performance of solar panels and energy saving smart windows. For these applications, it is important for these coatings to be as thin as possible and grown at lower temperatures on arbitrary substrates like glass, silicon, or flexible polymers. Here, we tune and investigate the plasmonic resonance of titanium nitride thin films in lower thicknesses regime varying from ~ 20 to 60 nm. High-quality crystalline thin films of route-mean-square roughness less than ~ 0.5 nm were grown on a glass substrate at temperature of ~ 200 °C with bias voltage of - 60 V using cathodic vacuum arc deposition. A local surface-enhanced-plasmonic-resonance was observed between 400 and 500 nm, which further shows a blueshift in plasmonic frequency in thicker films due to the increase in the carrier mobility. These results were combined with finite-difference-time-domain numerical analysis to understand the role of thicknesses and stoichiometry on the broadening of electromagnetic absorption.

BACKGROUND: Since the dawn of civilization, medicinal plants have been essential in the treatment of numerous human ailments. Medicinal plants have been the reliable sources to treat various diseases. Over 25% of prescription medications on the market today are made from natural resources. In the present study the selected medicinal plant, is Adenium obesum, of family Apocynaceae. The plant contains various chemical groups, including carbohydrate, cardiac glycoside, flavonoid, polyphenols, terpenoids, pregnanes, etc. OBJECTIVE: Millions of peoples worldwide are affected with neurodegenerative diseases. Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease & Huntingtons disease are important among them. Since ancient times, medicinal herbs have been used to treat illnesses. The objective of present study is to prepare an effective & safe drug formulation to treat neurological diseases. MATERIAL & METHODS: Methanolic extract of A. obesum (200 mg/kg, 400 mg/kg) alone as well as with diacerein (100 mg/kg) is used to treat the haloperidol (1 mg/kg) & iron (10 mg/kg) induced Parkinsonism & Isotretinoin induced depression in albino wistar rats. The efficacy of plant extract as well as diacerein were measured by various behavioral models, with the help of histopathological studies & antioxidant assay like GSH, SOD, CAT, and LPO. RESULTS: A. obesum alone & with diacerein is effective to treat neurological complications like Parkinson's disease & depression which can be seen in various behavioral models like, staircase test, rotarod test, forced swim test, hole board test etc. Histopathological evidences also suggest the significance of plant extract alone & with diacerein. CONCLUSION: The findings of present research work revealed the neuroprotective effect of both A. obesum extract as well as diacerein.

This paper presents the Coswara dataset, a dataset containing diverse set of respiratory sounds and rich meta-data, recorded between April-2020 and February-2022 from 2635 individuals (1819 SARS-CoV-2 negative, 674 positive, and 142 recovered subjects). The respiratory sounds contained nine sound categories associated with variants of breathing, cough and speech. The rich metadata contained demographic information associated with age, gender and geographic location, as well as the health information relating to the symptoms, pre-existing respiratory ailments, comorbidity and SARS-CoV-2 test status. Our study is the first of its kind to manually annotate the audio quality of the entire dataset (amounting to 65 hours) through manual listening. The paper summarizes the data collection procedure, demographic, symptoms and audio data information. A COVID-19 classifier based on bi-directional long short-term (BLSTM) architecture, is trained and evaluated on the different population sub-groups contained in the dataset to understand the bias/fairness of the model. This enabled the analysis of the impact of gender, geographic location, date of recording, and language proficiency on the COVID-19 detection performance.

This letter presents a reaction time analysis of a sound lateralization test. Sounds from various directions were synthesized using interaural time-level difference (ITD-ILD) combinations, and human subjects performed left/right detection. Stimuli from the sides yielded quicker reactions and better class accuracy than from the front. Congruent ITD-ILD cues significantly improved both metrics. For opposing ITD-ILD cues, subjects' choices were mostly driven by the ITD, and the responses were significantly slower. The findings, obtained with an easily accessible methodology, corroborate the integrated processing of the binaural cues and promote the use of multiple congruent binaural cues in headphone reproduction.

ABSTRACTChemical fertilizers boost crop production; however, their continued use decreases soil fertility in the long run. Nutrient recycling by the beneficiation of poultry manure into biochar and application as a soil amendment is a long-term solution for plant nutrition. The effect of poultry manure, poultry biochar and crop irrigation with 50% and 100% greywater (GW) was assessed on soil properties and growth of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. HD-2967) on the 7th and 14th day of sowing. This resulted in greater nutrients (OC, OM, C:N have values of 3.51%, 6.58%, and 16.52, respectively) in soil on the 14th day after sowing irrigated with 100% GW for soil and 10 g biochar amendments than manure. The germination and growth were boosted to 100% on day 6 after seed sowing soil and 5 g biochar. The maximum number of leaflets (4), rootlets (7) and shoot length (26.58 cm) was obtained for soil and 10 g biochar amendments with 100% GW on the 14th day of sowing. The significance of the work is that greywater and poultry biochar has been used for the irrigation of wheat as a step towards the management of both solid and liquid waste. Biochar being a potential adsorbent reduces the pollutant load of greywater while increasing the nutritive value of soil substratum and influencing plant growth. The findings could offer crucial knowledge for creating agronomic procedures to repurpose the nutrients in poultry manure and biochar to grow crops by adding value to waste and meeting the goal of bioeconomic sustainability.

The technology development for point-of-care tests (POCTs) targeting respiratory diseases has witnessed a growing demand in the recent past. Investigating the presence of acoustic biomarkers in modalities such as cough, breathing and speech sounds, and using them for building POCTs can offer fast, contactless and inexpensive testing. In view of this, over the past year, we launched the "Coswara" project to collect cough, breathing and speech sound recordings via worldwide crowdsourcing. With this data, a call for development of diagnostic tools was announced in the Interspeech 2021 as a special session titled "Diagnostics of COVID-19 using Acoustics (DiCOVA) Challenge". The goal was to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in developing acoustics-based COVID-19 POCTs by enabling them to work on the same set of development and test datasets. As part of the challenge, datasets with breathing, cough, and speech sound samples from COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 individuals were released to the participants. The challenge consisted of two tracks. The Track-1 focused only on cough sounds, and participants competed in a leaderboard setting. In Track-2, breathing and speech samples were provided for the participants, without a competitive leaderboard. The challenge attracted 85 plus registrations with 29 final submissions for Track-1. This paper describes the challenge (datasets, tasks, baseline system), and presents a focused summary of the various systems submitted by the participating teams. An analysis of the results from the top four teams showed that a fusion of the scores from these teams yields an area-under-the-receiver operating curve (AUC-ROC) of 95.1% on the blind test data. By summarizing the lessons learned, we foresee the challenge overview in this paper to help accelerate technological development of acoustic-based POCTs.

Severe symptomatic tricuspid regurgitation (TR) with right heart failure is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Medical therapy is often ineffective and surgical correction is not feasible due to prohibitive perioperative risk. Transcatheter caval valve implantation (CAVI) is an evolving therapeutic option for this condition. It refers to the heterotopic placement of a valve into the inferior vena cava alone or with a second valve in the superior vena cava to restrict the backflow from the failing tricuspid valve. We hereby describe a patient with previous mitral valve surgery with chronic severe TR who underwent successful CAVI at our institute.

A listening test is proposed in which human participants detect talker changes in two natural, multi-talker speech stimuli sets-a familiar language (English) and an unfamiliar language (Chinese). Miss rate, false-alarm rate, and response times (RT) showed a significant dependence on language familiarity. Linear regression modeling of RTs using diverse acoustic features derived from the stimuli showed recruitment of a pool of acoustic features for the talker change detection task. Further, benchmarking the same task against the state-of-the-art machine diarization system showed that the machine system achieves human parity for the familiar language but not for the unfamiliar language.

AIM: The present study aimed to explore the ameliorative role of alpha7 (α7) neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) modulation in epilepsy and associated comorbidities in postpentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-kindled mice. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The subconvulsive dose of PTZ (35 mg/kg, i.p.) was used to induce kindling-associated epileptogenesis in mice. After successful kindling, animals were treated intraperitoneally with saline, phenytoin (35 mg/kg), valproate (300 mg/kg), choline chloride (α7 agonist; 400 mg/kg and 800 mg/kg), and methyllycaconitine citrate (α7 antagonist; 3.5 mg/kg and 7.0 mg/kg) for 10 days. All the groups except naive were exposed to PTZ injections on day 3, 6, and 9 of treatment to assess seizure severity score. Epilepsy-associated comorbid depression was evaluated by tail suspension test, sucrose preference test, and plasma corticosterone levels, whereas epilepsy-associated memory deficit condition was assessed by step-through paradigm, Morris water maze, and nitrite levels. Neurochemical perturbations related to epilepsy and associated depression and memory deficit were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). RESULTS: Post-PTZ-kindled mice displayed significant depressive behavior and memory impairment as compared with naive mice as evidenced by corresponding behavioral and biochemical observations. Methyllycaconitine citrate treatment was unable to produce any ameliorative effect in diseased condition. Choline administration dose dependently ameliorated depression, memory impairment, and seizure severity in post-PTZ-kindled mice. The behavioral findings of the study were concurred with neurochemical and biochemical findings. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the present study demonstrated the amelioration of epilepsy, comorbid depression, and memory deficit by α7 nAChR agonist choline chloride in PTZ-kindled mice model.

The automatic analysis of conversational audio remains difficult, in part, due to the presence of multiple talkers speaking in turns, often with significant intonation variations and overlapping speech. The majority of prior work on psychoacoustic speech analysis and system design has focused on single-talker speech or multi-talker speech with overlapping talkers (for example, the cocktail party effect). There has been much less focus on how listeners detect a change in talker or in probing the acoustic features significant in characterizing a talker's voice in conversational speech. This study examines human talker change detection (TCD) in multi-party speech utterances using a behavioral paradigm in which listeners indicate the moment of perceived talker change. Human reaction times in this task can be well-estimated by a model of the acoustic feature distance among speech segments before and after a change in talker, with estimation improving for models incorporating longer durations of speech prior to a talker change. Further, human performance is superior to several online and offline state-of-the-art machine TCD systems.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is caused by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). The UPEC initiate pathogenesis by expressing type 1 pili, which attach to membrane receptors on the uroepithelial cells. Inhibition of attachment can provide a valuable target for prophylaxis in symptom-free milieu. METHODS: The antibacterial efficacy of alcoholic, hydroalcoholic and aqueous extracts of four plants namely Achyranthes aspera, Andrographis paniculata, Artemissia vulgaris and Glycyrrhiza glabra was evaluated against seven isolated bacterial strains and procured E. coli (UTI89/UPEC) strain. Screening of isolated strains was based on morphological characteristics and biofilm forming ability followed by physiological and biochemical analysis. RESULTS: The hydroalcoholic extracts of G. glabra at 50 µg/ml showed an impending antioxidant (DPPH) effect of 95.65% compared to ascorbic acid. The MIC values of all the plant extracts against selected bacterial strains ranged between 125 to 1000 µg/ml. In silico molecular docking performed to make out the antiadhesive role of 115 documented phytochemicals from selected plants identified quercetin-3-glucoside, ethyl caffeate, liquiritoside, liquiritin and isoliquiritigenin as potential phytochemicals. Molecular dynamics simulation performed by PTRAJ module of Amber11 package to monitor the stability of hydrogen bond showed that quercetin-3-glucoside and ethyl caffeate are potential phytochemicals as antiadhesive forming H-bonds with the FimH protein ligand. CONCLUSIONS: Aforesaid phytochemicals demonstrate effective antibacterial activity through the anti-adhesion mechanism.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to analyze cancer pattern among adolescents and young adults (AYA) in a tertiary care center in North India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study from January 2011 to December 2014 was undertaken on AYA cancer patients (aged 15-39 years). RESULTS: Totally 1077 cases of AYA cancers were identified for analyzing the frequency and pattern of cancer distribution. The most common cancer was head and neck (32%) followed by breast (14.2%). The distribution pattern was observed to be varying in different age groups with lymphoma, leukemia, bone tumors, and sarcomas in adolescents while carcinomas being more frequent in young adults. CONCLUSION: Cancer distribution patterns are distinct among AYA in terms of epidemiology and biology.

We studied the season dependent thermal tolerance, oxygen consumption, respiratory burst response and antioxidative enzyme activities in juveniles of Barilius bendelisis. The critical thermal maximum (CTmax), lethal thermal maximum (LTmax), critical thermal minimum (CTmin) and lethal thermal minimum (LTmin) were significantly different at five different seasons viz. winter (10.64°C), spring (16.25°C), summer (22.11°C), rainy (20.87°C) and autumn (17.77°C). The highest CTmax was registered in summer (36.02°C), and lowest CTmin was recorded during winter (2.77°C). Water temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH were strongly related to CTmax, LTmax, CTmin and LTmin suggesting seasonal acclimatization of B. bendelisis. The thermal tolerance polygon area of the B. bendelisis juveniles within the range of seasonal temperature (10.64-22.11°C) was calculated as 470.92°C(2). Oxygen consumption rate was significantly different (p<0.05) between seasons with maximum value during summer (57.66mgO2/kg/h) and lowest in winter (32.60mgO2/kg/h). Total white blood cell count including neutrophil and monocytes also showed significant difference (p<0.05) between seasons with maximum value during summer and minimum number in winter and were found correlated to temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and respiratory burst activity. Respiratory burst activity of blood phagocytes significantly differed (p<0.05) among seasons with higher value during summer (0.163 OD540nm) and minimum in winter season (0.054 OD540nm). The activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione-s-transferase both in liver and gill, also varied significantly (p<0.05) during different seasons. Overall results of this study suggest that multiple environmental factors play a role in seasonal acclimation in B. bendelisis, which modulate the thermal tolerance, oxygen consumption, respiratory burst activity and status of anti-oxidative potential in wild environment.

This study evaluates the antidiabetic activities of methanolic extract of Withania coagulans Dunal (Ashutosh booti) fruit (WCFE) in poloxamer-407 induced type 2 diabetic Wistar rats. The electrochemical behaviour of WCFE with anodic peak of 1.19± 0.01V was found similar to standards used indicating that extract is antioxidant in nature. Unlike diabetic control rats, the WCFE treated diabetic rats presented significant amelioration of glycaemia, insulinamia and lipid dysmetabolism, remarkable reduction of oxidative markers and improved cecal and pancreatic characteristics. HYBRID and FRED docking were performed for 25 documented WCFE botanicals for putative action mechanism concerning three diabetic therapeutic proteins namely PTP-1B, PPAR-γ and DPP-IV fully support the in vivo findings. Botanicals like nicandrenone10 and Acnistin F have shown considerable interaction potential with aforesaid proteins. Results provide pharmacological evidence of WCFE as antihyperglyceamic mediated by interaction of various botanicals with various targets operating in diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: African Americans (AA) have more pronounced insulin resistance and higher insulin secretion than European Americans (Caucasians or CA) when matched for age, gender, and body mass index (BMI). We hypothesize that physiological differences (including insulin sensitivity [SI]) between CAs and AAs can be explained by co-regulated gene networks in tissues involved in glucose homeostasis. METHODS: We performed integrative gene network analyses of transcriptomic data in subcutaneous adipose tissue of 99 CA and 37 AA subjects metabolically characterized as non-diabetic, with a range of SI and BMI values. RESULTS: Transcripts negatively correlated with SI in only the CA or AA subjects were enriched for inflammatory response genes and integrin-signaling genes, respectively. A sub-network (module) with TYROBP as a hub enriched for genes involved in inflammatory response (corrected p = 1.7E-26) was negatively correlated with SI (r = -0.426, p = 4.95E-04) in CA subjects. SI was positively correlated with transcript modules enriched for mitochondrial metabolism in both groups. Several SI-associated co-expressed modules were enriched for genes differentially expressed between groups. Two modules involved in immune response to viral infections and function of adherens junction, are significantly correlated with SI only in CAs. Five modules involved in drug/intracellular transport and oxidoreductase activity, among other activities, are correlated with SI only in AAs. Furthermore, we identified driver genes of these race-specific SI-associated modules. CONCLUSIONS: SI-associated transcriptional networks that were deranged predominantly in one ethnic group may explain the distinctive physiological features of glucose homeostasis among AA subjects.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a common metabolic disorder which is caused by multiple genetic perturbations affecting different biological pathways. Identifying genetic factors modulating the susceptibility of this complex heterogeneous metabolic phenotype in different ethnic and racial groups remains challenging. Despite recent success, the functional role of the T2D susceptibility variants implicated by genome-wide association studies (GWAS) remains largely unknown. Genetic dissection of transcript abundance or expression quantitative trait (eQTL) analysis unravels the genomic architecture of regulatory variants. Availability of eQTL information from tissues relevant for glucose homeostasis in humans opens a new avenue to prioritize GWAS-implicated variants that may be involved in triggering a causal chain of events leading to T2D. In this article, we review the progress made in the field of eQTL research and knowledge gained from those studies in understanding transcription regulatory mechanisms in human subjects. We highlight several novel approaches that can integrate eQTL analysis with multiple layers of biological information to identify ethnic-specific causal variants and gene-environment interactions relevant to T2D pathogenesis. Finally, we discuss how the eQTL analysis mediated search for "missing heritability" may lead us to novel biological and molecular mechanisms involved in susceptibility to T2D.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Tocopherol from raw pumpkin seeds has been reported to be effective in the alleviation of diabetes through its antioxidant activities. This study evaluates the antidiabetic activities of the tocopherol fraction of raw seeds of Cucurbita pepo L. (CPSE) in a diabetic rat model. In addition, the putative action mechanisms of its botanicals were computationally investigated. METHODS: Seed water activity (Aw) was assessed. Tocopherol was extracted and quantified from raw seed oil. The effect of CPSE was studied in poloxamer-407 (PX-407)-induced type 2 diabetic Wistar rats. Glycemic, insulinemic, and lipid profiles, as well as lipid peroxidation status, were evaluated. Glucagon like peptide-1 (GLP-1) content in the cecum was evaluated and histopathological analysis of the pancreas was performed. Further, HYBRID and FRED docking were performed for 10 documented CPSE botanicals, for putative action mechanisms concerning three proteins [protein-tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP-1B), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ), and dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV)] known to have diabetic therapeutic potential. RESULTS: The Aw of raw seeds was found to be 0.544 ± 0.002. Using tocopherol standards, HPLC determination of CPSE revealed the presence of tocopherol isomers (α, ß, γ, and δ). The tocopherol content was found to be 107.4 ± 2.9 mg/100 g of CPSE. When compared to diabetic control (DC) rats, the CPSE-treated diabetic rats presented a significant amelioration of glycemia, insulinemia, and lipid dysmetabolism. A remarkable reduction in oxidative markers and improved cecal and pancreatic characteristics were also observed. Tocopherol isomers have shown a considerable interaction potential with the aforesaid proteins in docking. CONCLUSION: The results provide pharmacological evidence of CPSE as an antihyperglycemic mediated by the interaction of various botanicals with multiple targets operating in diabetes mellitus (DM).

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of plumbagin-free alcohol extract (PFAE) of Plumbago zeylanica Linn. (Plumbaginaceae) (P. zeylanica) root, on female reproductive system and fertility of adult female wistar rats. METHODS: After the oral acute toxicity study, the PFAE was administered at two dose levels to perform the estrous cycle study, anti-implantation and abortifacient activity and hormonal analysis. However, the estrogenic/antiestrogenic activity was evaluated at only one most effective dose. RESULTS: LD(50) cut-off was 5,000 mg/kg body weight. The extract exhibited significant anti-implantation and abortifacient activity at the tested dose levels (300 and 500 mg/kg, p.o.) (P<0.01). The extract dose-dependently decreased the levels of serum progesterone, follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone, while a dose-dependent increase was observed in the concentration of serum prolactin. The extract did not show any significant changes in structure and function of uterus when given alone, but when given along with ethinyl estradiol, it exhibited significant antiestrogenic activity in immature overiectomized female rats(P<0.001). Biochemical parameters in the serum/blood and haematological parameters did not show appreciable changes throughout and after the course of investigation. However, all the altered parameters returned to normalcy within 30 days following withdrawal of treatment. CONCLUSIONS: All findings suggest that the antifertility activity of extract could possibly be through the changes in the implantation site, altered hormonal levels, prolonged estrous cycle and anti-estrogenic activity. Hence, the extract possesses reversible antifertility activity without adverse toxicity in female rats.
