The pathophysiological understanding of dental caries explains that the primary factor responsible is linked to an imbalance in microbial composition within the oral cavity, stemming from both artificial and natural sources. Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) is the most accountable and prevalent pathogen for caries development among the diverse pool. S. mutans, an acidogenic bacterium, lowers oral pH through the metabolic conversion of dietary sugar into organic acids, leading to enamel demineralization and dental caries. Numerous antibacterial interventions have been employed in the past to address this issue. However, adopting such an approach poses the risk of exacerbating concerns related to Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and long-term oral cytotoxicity. In response to this, a sustainable strategy is suggested, involving the utilization of L-Arginine (L-Arg) as a probiotic nutrient supplement for non-pathogenic microbes. It will help in creating a natural competitive environment against the pathogenic microbes responsible for initiating dental caries. The hypothesis involves utilizing a combination of a nutrient supplement and the repurposed drug Piceatannol, specifically for its anti-biofilm properties. This combination synergistically improves the effectiveness of the therapy by converting the complex microbial biofilm into a planktonic state.

Medicinal plants are rich sources of pharmaceutically important compounds and have been utilized for the treatment of various diseases since ancient times. Valeriana jatamansi Jones, also known as Indian valerian, holds a special place among temperate Himalayan medicinal plants and is renowned for its therapeutic properties in addressing a variety of ailments. The therapeutic potential of V. jatamansi is attributed to the presence of valuable compounds such as valepotriates, sesquiterpenoids, valeriananoids, jatamanins, lignans, cryptomeridiol, maaliol, xanthorrhizzol, and patchouli alcohol found in its rhizome and roots. This study employed various treatments, including the cultivation of V. jatamansi with the inoculation of Funneliformis mosseae, F. constrictus, and a consortium of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), to investigate their influence on biomass production, chlorophyll content, and the accumulation of bioactive compounds in V. jatamansi. The results revealed significant improvement in these parameters in the inoculated plants. The parameters of plants inoculated with F. mosseae were the highest, followed by those of plants inoculated with F. constrictus and a mixture of AMFs. This study not only underscores the potential of native AMF for promoting the growth of V. jatamansi but also elucidates their role in influencing the synthesis of bioactive compounds. The cultivation of V. jatamansi with native AMF has emerged as a sustainable and eco-friendly approach, providing the dual benefit of enhancing both the medicinal and economic value of this valuable plant. This research contributes valuable insights into the practical application of mycorrhizal associations for the cultivation of medicinal plants, bridging the realms of agriculture and pharmaceuticals.

In the performed study, a novel fabrication of agar-based nanofibers was electrospun in an asymmetric bilayer dressing for biomedical transdermal patches. The optimal parameters for the fabrication of agar-based nanofibers after optimization were a feed rate of 10 µL/min, a 7 cm collector-to-nozzle distance, a 15 kV applied voltage, and a 700-rpm rotating collector speed. Coaxial nanofibers, as a second asymmetric layer, were produced using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with cephalexin hydrate, an antibacterial drug, as the core and agar-PCL as the sheath. The morphology of the developed uniaxial and coaxial nanofibrous layers was analysed using a scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. For the formation of bilayer asymmetric structures, the agar-PCL uniaxial layer was fabricated over the layer of coaxial PVA and agar-PCL layers for sustained drug release. The agar-based nanofibrous mats exhibited tensile strength of 7 MPa with 40 % elongation failure, 8-fold increased swelling, enhanced wettability (60° contact angle), and a moisture transmission rate of 2174 g/m2/day. The developed coaxial bilayer mats exhibited antimicrobial activity, hemocompatibility, and cytocompatibility. Overall, this novel agar nanofibrous dressing offers promising potential for advanced biomedical applications, particularly as transdermal patches for efficient drug delivery systems.

BACKGROUND: Several non-invasive technologies are nowadays available in the market which claim to determine the hemoglobin levels instantly without the requirement of the blood sample. But no study has shown the significance of such non-invasive devices on a routine basis for determining their impact on anemia reduction programs. This study is conducted to determine the impact of regular hemoglobin screening on the women population to determine its potential in reducing anemia, using a digitalized non-invasive device. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 203 women of reproductive age group, residing in the Moradabad district. Repetitive readings were taken after a time interval of a minimum of 1 month for determining the impact of regular screening. The entire data collection process was carried out using the EzeCheck mobile app. RESULTS: It was observed that the prevalence of anemia was reduced upon the second time screening and was accepted by the women population. Repetitive testing has a significant impact on reducing anemia prevalence. Also, the simplified non-invasive technology for estimating the hemoglobin values, makes the user more comfortable to take the test. CONCLUSION: Non-invasive devices should be used regularly to keep track of hemoglobin levels which will help in the effective treatment of anemia. The mobile app-based testing could help to easily evaluate the reports of the patients from any remote location with instant result interpretation and health assistance.

INTRODUCTION: Streptococcus pneumoniae cause a significant global health challenge. We aimed to determine nasopharyngeal carriage, serotypes distribution, and antimicrobial profile of pneumococci among the children of Aden. METHODOLOGY: A total of 385 children, aged 2-17 years, were included. Asymptomatic samples were randomly collected from children in selected schools and vaccination centers. Symptomatic samples were obtained from selected pediatric clinics. The nasopharyngeal swabs were tested for pneumococci using culture and real time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Serotyping was done with a pneumotest-latex kit and antimicrobial susceptibility was tested by disc diffusion and Epsilometer test. RESULTS: The total pneumococcal carriage was 44.4% and 57.1% by culture and RT-PCR, respectively. There was a statistically significant association between carriage rate and living in single room (OR = 7.9; p = 0.00001), sharing a sleeping space (OR = 15.1; p = 0.00001), and low monthly income (OR = 2.02; p = 0.007). The common serotypes were 19, 1, 4, 5, 2, and 23. The proportion of non-pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (non-PCV13) serotypes was 24%. Pneumococci were resistant to penicillin (96.5%), cefepime (15.8%), ceftriaxone (16.4%), and amoxicillin-clavulanate (0%). Erythromycin, azithromycin, and doxycycline had resistance rates of 48%, 31%, and 53.3%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: A high pneumococcal carriage rate was observed in Yemeni children, particularly in low-income households and shared living conditions. There was significant penicillin resistance at meningitis breakpoint. Furthermore, non-PCV13 serotypes were gradually replacing PCV13 serotypes. The findings underscore the urgent need for enhanced surveillance and stewardship to improve vaccination and antibiotic policies in Yemen.

Anaemia is a major public health problem, especially in resource constrained settings. Dependency on assessment of blood hemoglobin (Hgb) concentration impedes anemia detection, risk stratification and intervention. Thus, valid, frugal and scalable technologies are needed. EzeCheck is a noninvasive portable device developed in India for predicting hemoglobin levels in human beings aged 4 years and above using a finger-tip biosensor. In this assessment, we aimed to: (i) evaluate EzeCheck's performance with an automated whole blood hemato-analyzer (Sysmex XN 1000) as the gold standard, and (ii) estimate EzeCheck's agreement with Sahli's method and HemoCue (Hb-301) in real-world primary and higher care facilities. Paired assessments were done at five sites across India i.e., Bhubaneshwar, Shimla, Solan and Mashobra and Ulhasnagar. Participants across all age groups (4 years and above) were assessed. We used a range of statistical tests to evaluate the performance of EzeCheck. It was found that EzeCheck performed well across age and gender categories with convincing validity, concordance, precision and accuracy, and acceptable bias. While comparing EzeCheck with Hemato-analyzer, no statistically significant systematic bias was found. However, EzeCheck showed significant systematic bias when compared to Sahli's method and HemoCue. We concluded that EzeCheck could detect anemia (as per WHO Hgb cut-offs) in 'real-world settings' and 'across age and gender categories', with high sensitivity, specificity and accuracy, and can serve as a replacement to traditional methods of hemoglobin assessment. Further, for countries with higher prevalence of anemia where universal screening may be mandated, the positive predictive value of EzeCheck will be higher. The likelihood ratios also indicated that the device had moderate-to-good utility. EzeCheck is suitable for embedment into program and out-patient health care settings in resource constrained contexts as a spot-check hemoglobinometer.

In winter, the paddy residues become wet during morning and late evening due to dew, which restricts the operation of sowing machines (Happy Seeder and Super Seeder) into paddy residues, as wet residues do not slide on furrow openers/tines. A PAU Smart Seeder (PSS) was developed and evaluated for a four-wheel tractor that can sow wheat with optimum crop establishment in combined harvested rice fields. The PSS were evaluated for its performance under varying straw load, forward speed, and rotor speed in terms of fuel consumption, field capacity, seed emergence, and grain yield. The crop establishment and wheat yield of PSS was also compared with the existing straw management machines Happy Seeder (HS) and Super Seeder (SS) under heavy paddy residue conditions. The effect of the straw load was more pronounced on dependent variables than the effect of the speed index. PSS performance was best at a forward speed of 2.6 km h-1, rotor speed of 127.5 rpm, and a straw load of 6 t ha-1. Average fuel consumption using PSS was lower than SS but higher than HS. Wheat emergence was higher by 15.6 and 25.7% on the PSS plots compared to HS and SS, respectively. Average wheat grain yield in PSS plots was significantly higher by 12.7 and 18.9% than SS and HS, respectively in one experiment, while the grain yield was similar for both PSS and HS in other experiments. PSS has a novel mechanism to manage paddy straw and simultaneously sow wheat into a heavy straw load (> 8 t ha-1) mixture of anchored and loose straw. In conclusion, PSS showed promise for in-situ management of rice straw as it eliminates most of the operational problems encountered by the existing seeders (HS and SS).

Plastics are ubiquitous in today's lifestyle, and their indiscriminate use has led to the accumulation of plastic waste in landfills and oceans. The waste accumulates and breaks into micro-particles that enter the food chain, causing severe threats to human health, wildlife, and the ecosystem. Environment-friendly and bio-based degradable materials offer a sustainable alternative to the vastly used synthetic materials. Here, a polylactic acid and carbon nanofiber-based membrane and a paper-based colorimetric sensor have been developed. The membrane had a surface area of 3.02 m2 g-1 and a pore size of 18.77 nm. The pores were evenly distributed with a pore volume of 0.0137 cm3 g-1. The membrane was evaluated in accordance with OECD guidelines and was found to be safe for tested aquatic and terrestrial models. The activated PLA-CNF membrane was further used as a bio-based electrode for the electrochemical detection of nitrates (NO3-) in water samples with a detection limit of 0.046 ppm and sensitivity of 1.69 × 10-4 A ppm-1 mm-2, whereas the developed paper-based colorimetric sensor had a detection limit of 156 ppm for NO3-. This study presents an environment-friendly, low-carbon footprint disposable material for sensing applications as a sustainable alternative to plastics.

Multifocal nodular hepatic steatosis (MFNHS) is a rare benign clinical entity mimicking metastatic disease. This study is designed to describe the imaging and histopathologic findings and clinical course of patients with MFNHS. In this retrospective study during 2005 and 2023, 10 patients with an imaging and pathologic diagnosis of MFNHS were included. The imaging and histopathology findings were reviewed in each case. The follow-up images were reviewed to assess the clinical course of the disease. The mean age was 50.0 ± 10.5 years, and the male-to-female ratio was 4:6. Three patients had a past medical history of cancer. All patients were found to have lesions suspicious of malignancy on either ultrasound (US) or computed tomography (CT) requiring further workup. Six patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and 4 patients underwent an image-guided biopsy which resulted in hepatic steatosis. During the follow-up period, the majority of patients (71.5%) remained unchanged or improved, while 2 patients (28.5%) progressed. MRI is a reliable modality in detecting and characterizing MFNHS and should be considered to further assess multiple hepatic lesions in cases where the clinical suspicion is not high for metastasis.

A comprehensive investigation of the solution-phase photophysics of tetracene bis-carboxylic acid [5,12-tetracenepropiolic acid (Tc-DA)] and its related methyl ester [5,12-tetracenepropynoate (Tc-DE)], a non-hydrogen-bonding counterpart, reveals the role of the carboxylic acid moiety in driving molecular aggregation and concomitant excited-state behavior. Low-concentration solutions of Tc-DA exhibit similar properties to the popular 5,12-bis((triisopropylsilyl)ethynl)tetracene, but as the concentration increases, evidence for aggregates that form excimers and a new mixed-state species with charge-transfer (CT) and correlated triplet pair (TT) character is revealed by transient absorption and fluorescence experiments. Aggregates of Tc-DA evolve further with concentration toward an additional phase that is dominated by the mixed CT/TT state which is the only state present in Tc-DE aggregates and can be modulated with the solvent polarity. Computational modeling finds that cofacial arrangement of Tc-DA and Tc-DE subunits is the most stable aggregate structure and this agrees with results from 1H NMR spectroscopy. The calculated spectra of these cofacial dimers replicate the observed broadening in ground-state absorption as well as accurately predict the formation of a near-UV transition associated with a CT between molecular subunits that is unique to the specific aggregate structure. Taken together, the results suggest that the hydrogen bonding between Tc-DA molecules and the associated disruption of hydrogen bonding with solvent produce a regime of dimer-like behavior, absent in Tc-DE, that favors excimers rather than CT/TT mixed states. The control of aggregate size and structure using distinct functional groups, solute concentration, and solvent in tetracene promises new avenues for its use in light-harvesting schemes.

Crop residue management has become more challenging with intensive agricultural operations. Zero tillage and crop residue returns, along with the enhancement of in-situ residue decomposition through microbial intervention, are essential measures for preserving and enhancing soil quality. To address this problem in view of stubble burning, field experiments were conducted in rice-rice (variety Swarna) cropping systems under lowland conditions, wherein the following different residue management practices were adopted viz., conventional cultivation (CC), residue incorporation (RI @ 6 t paddy straw ha-1), residue retention (RR @6 t paddy straw ha-1), and zero tillage (ZT). In this experiment, two microbial products i.e. solid microbial consortium (SMC) at 2.0 kg ha-1) and capsule (10 numbers ha-1), were evaluated in both Rabi (dry) and Kharif (wet) seasons under different residue management practices. The results on soil microbial properties showed that application of either SMC or capsule based formulation could significantly improve the soil organic carbon (SOC) content in ZT (9.51 g/kg), followed by RI (9.36 g/kg), and RR (9.34 g/kg) as compared to CC (7.61 g/kg). There were significant differences in the soil functional properties (AcP, AkP, FDA, and DHA) with microbial interventions across all residue management practices. SOC was significantly positive correlated with cellulase (R2 = 0.64, p < 0.001), ß-glucosidase (R2 = 0.61, p < 0.001), and laccase (R2 = 0.66, p < 0.001) activity; however, the regression coefficients varied significantly with microbial intervention. Moreover, the availability of N, P, and K in soil was significantly (p < 0.05) improved under microbial treatments with either RR or RI practices. Among the different methods of residues management practices, RI with microbial intervention registered a consistent yield improvement (8.4-17.8%) compared to conventional practices with microbial intervention. The present findings prove that the application of decomposing microbial consortia for in-situ rice residue management under field conditions significantly enhances soil quality and crop yield compared to conventional practices.

The continuously rising atmospheric CO2 concentration potentially increase plant growth through stimulating C metabolism; however, plant C:N:P stoichiometry in response to elevated CO2 (eCO2) under low P stress remains largely unknown. We investigated the combined effect of eCO2 and low phosphorus on growth, yield, C:N:P stoichiometry, and remobilization in rice cv. Kasalath (aus type), IR64 (a mega rice variety), and IR64-Pup1 (Pup1 QTL introgressed IR64). In response to eCO2 and low P, the C accumulation increased significantly (particularly at anthesis stage) while N and P concentration decreased leading to higher C:N and C:P ratios in all plant components (leaf, sheath, stem, and grain) than ambient CO2. The remobilization efficiencies of N and P were also reduced under low P with eCO2 as compared to control conditions. Among cultivars, the combined effect of eCO2 and low P was greater in IR64-Pup1 and produced higher biomass and grain yield as compared to IR64. However, IR64-Pup1 exhibited a lower N but higher P concentration than IR64, indicating that the Pup1 QTL improved P uptake but did not influence N uptake. Our study suggests that the P availability along with eCO2 would alter the C:N:P ratios due to their differential partitioning, thereby affecting growth and yield.

Solution-processed high-performing ambipolar organic phototransistors (OPTs) can enable low-cost integrated circuits. Here, a heteroatom engineering approach to modify the electron affinity of a low band gap diketopyrrolopyrole (DPP) co-polymer, resulting in well-balanced charge transport, a more preferential edge-on orientation and higher crystallinity, is demonstrated. Changing the comonomer heteroatom from sulfur (benzothiadiazole (BT)) to oxygen (benzooxadiazole (BO)) leads to an increased electron affinity and introduces higher ambipolarity. Organic thin film transistors fabricated from the novel PDPP-BO exhibit charge carrier mobility of 0.6 and 0.3 cm2 Vs⁻1 for electrons and holes, respectively. Due to the high sensitivity of the PDPP-based material and the balanced transport in PDPP-BO, its application as an NIR detector in an OPT architecture is presented. By maintaining a high on/off ratio (9 × 104), ambipolar OPTs are shown with photoresponsivity of 69 and 99 A W⁻1 and specific detectivity of 8 × 107 for the p-type operation and 4 × 109 Jones for the n-type regime. The high symmetric NIR-ambipolar OPTs are also evaluated as ambipolar photo-inverters, and show a 46% gain enhancement under illumination.

Biodiversity research is essential for addressing the global biodiversity crisis, necessitating diverse participation and perspectives. However, the field currently faces a significant inclusivity problem as local expertise from biodiversity-rich but economically disadvantaged regions is often underrepresented. The underrepresentation of local experts is driven by four main challenges: linguistic bias, undervalued contributions, parachute science practices, and capacity constraints. While fragmented solutions exist, a unified multi-stakeholder approach is necessary to address these interconnected and systemic issues. Here, we introduce a holistic framework of collective responsibility, integrating tailored strategies that embrace diversity and dismantle systemic barriers for equitable collaboration. This framework delineates the diverse actors and practices required for promoting inclusivity in biodiversity research, assigning clear responsibilities to researchers, publishers, institutions, and funding bodies. Strategies for researchers include cultivating self-awareness, expanding literature searches, fostering partnerships with local experts, and promoting knowledge exchange. For institutions, we recommend establishing specialized liaison roles, implementing equitable policies, allocating resources for diversity initiatives, and enhancing support for international researchers. Publishers can facilitate multilingual dissemination, remove financial barriers, establish inclusivity standards, and ensure equitable representation in peer review. Funders should remove systemic barriers, strengthen research networks, and prioritize equitable resource allocation. Implementing these stakeholder-specific strategies can help dismantle deep-rooted biases and structural inequities in biodiversity research, catalyzing a shift towards a more inclusive and representative model that amplifies diverse perspectives and maximizes collective knowledge for effective global conservation.


A pesquisa em biodiversidade é essencial para enfrentar a crise global de biodiversidade, exigindo perspectivas diversificadas. No entanto, este campo do conhecimento enfrenta um significativo problema de inclusão, uma vez que os conhecimentos ecológicos produzidos em áreas ricas em biodiversidade, mas economicamente desfavorecidas, são frequentemente sub-representados. Esta sub-representação é impulsionada por quatro desafios principais: viés linguístico, contribuições científicas subvalorizadas, colaborações baseadas em práticas colonialistas (parachute science) e lacunas na capacitação e no acesso a dados. Embora soluções fragmentadas existam, uma abordagem multilateral unificada é necessária para abordar estas questões sistêmicas. Aqui, introduzimos uma abordagem holística de responsabilidade coletiva, integrando estratégias personalizadas que abraçam a diversidade e desmantelam barreiras sistêmicas para uma colaboração equitativa. Esta abordagem delineia os diversos atores e práticas necessárias para promover a inclusão na pesquisa sobre biodiversidade, atribuindo responsabilidades claras a pesquisadores, editoras, instituições e órgãos de fomento. As estratégias para os investigadores incluem o cultivo da autoconsciência, a expansão das pesquisas bibliográficas, o fomento de parcerias com especialistas locais e a promoção do intercâmbio de conhecimentos. Para as instituições, recomendamos o estabelecimento de funções de intermediação especializadas, a implementação de políticas equitativas, a alocação de recursos para iniciativas de diversidade e o reforço do apoio a pesquisadores internacionais. As editoras podem facilitar a divulgação multilíngue, eliminar barreiras financeiras, estabelecer normas de inclusão e assegurar uma representação equitativa na avaliação pelos pares. Os financiadores devem eliminar barreiras sistêmicas, fortalecer redes de pesquisa e dar prioridade à distribuição equitativa de recursos. A implementação dessas estratégias específicas para as partes interessadas pode ajudar a desmantelar vieses profundamente enraizados e desigualdades estruturais na pesquisa de biodiversidade, catalisando uma mudança para um modelo mais inclusivo e representativo que amplifica perspectivas diversas e maximiza o conhecimento coletivo para uma eficaz conservação da biodiversidade global.

Biodiversity research is essential for addressing the global biodiversity crisis, necessitating diverse participation and perspectives. However, the field currently faces a significant inclusivity problem as local expertise from biodiversity-rich but economically disadvantaged regions is often underrepresented. The underrepresentation of local experts is driven by four main challenges: linguistic bias, undervalued contributions, parachute science practices, and capacity constraints. While fragmented solutions exist, a unified multi-stakeholder approach is necessary to address these interconnected and systemic issues. Here, we introduce a holistic framework of collective responsibility, integrating tailored strategies that embrace diversity and dismantle systemic barriers for equitable collaboration. This framework delineates the diverse actors and practices required for promoting inclusivity in biodiversity research, assigning clear responsibilities to researchers, publishers, institutions, and funding bodies. Strategies for researchers include cultivating self-awareness, expanding literature searches, fostering partnerships with local experts, and promoting knowledge exchange. For institutions, we recommend establishing specialized liaison roles, implementing equitable policies, allocating resources for diversity initiatives, and enhancing support for international researchers. Publishers can facilitate multilingual dissemination, remove financial barriers, establish inclusivity standards, and ensure equitable representation in peer review. Funders should remove systemic barriers, strengthen research networks, and prioritize equitable resource allocation. Implementing these stakeholder-specific strategies can help dismantle deep-rooted biases and structural inequities in biodiversity research, catalyzing a shift towards a more inclusive and representative model that amplifies diverse perspectives and maximizes collective knowledge for effective global conservation.


La investigación sobre la biodiversidad es esencial para hacer frente a la crisis mundial de la biodiversidad, lo cual requiere una participación y perspectivas diversas. Sin embargo, el estudio de la biodiversidad se enfrenta actualmente a un importante problema de inclusión, ya que los conocimientos locales de regiones altamente biodiversas, aunque económicamente desfavorecidas, suelen tener menor representación. La escasa representación de los expertos locales se debe a cuatro retos principales: el sesgo lingüístico, la subestimación de contribuciones, las prácticas científicas de paracaídas y las limitaciones de capacidad. Si bien existen soluciones fragmentadas, es necesario un enfoque unificado de múltiples partes interesadas para abordar estos problemas interconectados y sistémicos. Aquí, presentamos un marco holístico de responsabilidad colectiva, integrando estrategias personalizadas que abrazan la diversidad y desmantelan las barreras sistémicas para una colaboración equitativa. Este marco delinea los diversos actores y prácticas necesarias para promover la inclusión en la investigación sobre biodiversidad, asignando responsabilidades claras a investigadores, editores, instituciones y organismos de financiación. Las estrategias para los investigadores incluyen cultivar la autoconciencia, la ampliación de las búsquedas bibliográficas, el fomento de asociaciones con expertos locales y la promoción del intercambio de conocimientos. En el caso de las instituciones, recomendamos establecer funciones de colaboración especializadas, implementar políticas equitativas, asignar recursos para iniciativas de diversidad y mejorar el apoyo a los investigadores internacionales. Meat adulteration and admixing are prevalent malpractices observed in processed and raw meat samples, where the consumption of adulterated meat has been associated with food allergies, financial losses, and consumer distrust. Meat authentication is pivotal to address these concerns. The meat authenticity can be determined through genetic, protein, and immunological markers and advanced detection methods. However, these methods often target a single species and lack the specificity to distinguish closely related species. Here, in the present study, we have developed a multiplex detection method based on the species-specific primers and probes, that can target four meat species in one reaction. The developed method amplifies the mitochondrial genomic regions of chicken, pork, sheep and goat using TaqMan multiplex probe-based RT-qPCR assay. Unique pairs of species-specific primers and probes that target specific mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) regions of each species were designed and screened for specificity and sensitivity. The detection limit for species identification using the designed primers in real-time qPCR assays was 0.1 picogram per microliter (pg/µL) DNA detected in singleplex reaction and facilitates the simultaneous detection of closely related species, such as goat and sheep. Further, DNA-based probes were utilized in a multiplex real-time qPCR assay to identify chicken, pork, sheep and goat DNA in a single tube reaction. The multiplex assay was validated for raw and processed meat products, demonstrating its applications in ensuring the quality of meat products and safeguarding consumer interests.

The continuous depletion of fossil resources, energy-crisis and environmental pollution has gained popularity for careful selection of suitable microbial consortium to efficiently decompose crop residue and facilitate nutrient cycling. While crop residue is commonly incorporated into soil, the impact of the heterogeneity of residue on decomposition and biological mechanisms involved in extracellular carbon (C) cycle related enzyme activities remain not fully understood. To address this problem, an incubation study was conducted on chemical heterogeneity of straw and root residue with indigenous ligno-cellulolytic microbial consortium on extracellular enzymes as their activity is crucial for making in-situ residue management decisions under field condition. The activity of extracellular enzymes in different substrates showed differential variation with the type of enzyme and ranged from 16.9 to 77.6 µg mL-1, 135.7 to 410.8 µg mL-1, 66.9 to 177.1 µg mL-1 and 42.1 to 160.9 µg mL-1 for cellulase, xylanase, laccase and lignin peroxidase, respectively. Extracellular enzyme activities were sensitive to heterogeneity of biochemical constituent's present in straw and root residues and enhanced the decomposition processes with indigenous ligno-cellulolytic microbial consortium (Bacillus altitudinis, Streptomyces flavomacrosporus and Aspergillus terreus). Correlation matrix elucidated A. terreus and B. altitudinis as potential indigenous ligno-cellulolytic microbial inoculant influencing soil enzymatic activity (p < 0.001). This research work demonstrates a substantial impact of chemically diverse crop residues on the decomposition of both straw and root. It also highlights the pivotal role played by key indigenous decomposers and interactions between different microorganisms in governing the decomposition of straw and root primarily through release of extracellular enzyme. Consequently, it is novel bio-emerging strategy suggested that incorporation of the crop residues under field conditions should be carried out in conjunction with the potential indigenous ligno-cellulolytic microbial consortium for efficient decomposition in the short period of time under sustainable agriculture system.

BACKGROUND: In alignment with the Measles and Rubella (MR) Strategic Elimination plan, India conducted a mass measles and rubella vaccination campaign across the country between 2017 and 2020 to provide a dose of MR containing vaccine to all children aged 9 months to 15 years. We estimated campaign vaccination coverage in five districts in India and assessed campaign awareness and factors associated with vaccination during the campaign to better understand reasons for not receiving the dose. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Community-based cross-sectional serosurveys were conducted in five districts of India among children aged 9 months to 15 years after the vaccination campaign. Campaign coverage was estimated based on home-based immunization record or caregiver recall. Campaign coverage was stratified by child- and household-level risk factors and descriptive analyses were performed to assess reasons for not receiving the campaign dose. Three thousand three hundred and fifty-seven children aged 9 months to 15 years at the time of the campaign were enrolled. Campaign coverage among children aged 9 months to 5 years documented or by recall ranged from 74.2% in Kanpur Nagar District to 90.4% in Dibrugarh District, Assam. Similar coverage was observed for older children. Caregiver awareness of the campaign varied from 88.3% in Hoshiarpur District, Punjab to 97.6% in Dibrugarh District, Assam, although 8% of children whose caregivers were aware of the campaign were not vaccinated during the campaign. Failure to receive the campaign dose was associated with urban settings, low maternal education, and lack of school attendance although the associations varied by district. CONCLUSION: Awareness of the MR vaccination campaign was high; however, campaign coverage varied by district and did not reach the elimination target of 95% coverage in any of the districts studied. Areas with lower coverage among younger children must be prioritized by strengthening the routine immunization programme and implementing strategies to identify and reach under-vaccinated children.

Broadband dielectric spectroscopy, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry are used to investigate the molecular dynamics, free volume and thermal behaviour of a poly(ethyleneimine), PEI, canopy in liquid-like nanoparticle-organic hybrid materials (NOHMs) consisting of alumina nanoparticles and nanorods as inorganic nanocores. It is confirmed that the highly branched PEI canopy in liquid-like NOHMs possesses an ordered structure having less entanglements of the side chains as compared to neat PEI. The size of the free volumes associated with the PEI canopy for nanoparticle- and nanorod-based NOHMs is larger and smaller, respectively, as compared to neat PEI. The time scales characterizing the segmental dynamics and side chain relaxations of the canopy in the nanorod-based NOHM are slowed down drastically as compared to the nanoparticle-based NOHM and neat PEI. These results confirm that the shape of the inorganic cores plays a deterministic role toward the structural arrangement (free volume) and segmental dynamics of the canopy polymer in liquid-like NOHMs.

Among the primary causes of mortality in today's world is cancer. Many drugs are employed to give lengthy and severe chemotherapy and radiation therapy, like nitrosoureas (Cisplatin, Oxaliplatin), Antimetabolites (5-fluorouracil, Methotrexate), Topoisomerase inhibitors (Etoposide), Mitotic inhibitors (Doxorubicin); such treatment is associated with significant adverse effects. Antitumor antibiotics have side effects similar to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for humans and animals, and additional Se supplementation is required, particularly for individuals deficient in Se. Due to its unique features and high bioactivities, selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), which act as a supplement to counter Se deficiency, have recently gained worldwide attention. This study presented a safer and more economical way of preparing stable SeNPs. The researcher has assessed the antiproliferative efficiency of SeNPs-based paclitaxel delivery systems against tumor cells in vitro with relevant mechanistic visualization. SeNPs stabilized by Pluronic F-127 were synthesized and studied. The significant properties and biological activities of PTX-loaded SeNPs on cancer cells from the lungs, breasts, cervical, and colons. In one study, SeNPs were formulated using chitosan (CTS) polymer and then incorporated into CTS/citrate gel, resulting in a SeNPs-loaded chitosan/citrate complex; in another study, CTS was used in the synthesis of SeNPs and then situated into CTS/citrate gel, resulting in Se loaded nanoparticles. These formulations were found to be more successful in cancer treatment.
