RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to identify internal and external factors associated with outdoor winter walking in older adults. In this scoping review, 12 databases were searched. Inclusion criteria included English language, focus on adults 65 years of age or older, and evaluation of factors associated with outdoor winter walking. Two authors screened titles/abstracts and full text. Conflicts were resolved by consensus. Data were extracted, organized into tables, and summarized as pertaining to barriers/facilitators and internal/external factors associated with outdoor winter walking. A total of 6,843 articles were identified, 1,898 duplicates were removed, 4,789 were excluded during title/abstract screening, and 148 were excluded during full-text review. Eight studies were included. Four categories of factors affecting outdoor winter walking in older adults were identified: adverse weather conditions, physical environment, physical function, and perceptions relating to winter walking conditions. Rehabilitation and exercise professionals can use the results to educate their clients and implement the facilitators of and alternatives and solutions to barriers to outdoor winter walking.

RESUMO

Many evolutionary biologists collect genetic data from natural populations and then need to investigate the relationship among these populations to compare different biogeographic hypotheses. MIGRATE, a useful tool for exploring relationships between populations and comparing hypotheses, has existed since 1998. Throughout the years, it has steadily improved in both the quality of algorithms used and in the efficiency of carrying out those calculations, thus allowing for a larger number of loci to be evaluated. This efficiency has been enhanced, as MIGRATE has been developed to perform many of its calculations concurrently when running on a computer cluster. The program is based on the coalescence theory and uses Bayesian inference to estimate posterior probability densities of all the parameters of a user-specified population model. Complex models, which include migration and colonization parameters, can be specified. These models can be evaluated using marginal likelihoods, thus allowing a user to compare the merits of different hypotheses. The three presented protocols will help novice users to develop sophisticated analysis techniques useful for their research projects. © 2019 The Authors. RESUMO

Lymphocytic hypophysitis is an unusual inflammatory condition of the pituitary gland, classically seen in females during the peripartum periods. The clinical presentation is varied and depends on hormonal deficiencies and pathophysiological effects on the target organs. Although involvement of the neurohypophysis and secondary diabetes insipidus are rare, progression to multiple organ endocrinopathies is common. Pathologically, the condition is characterized by lymphocytic infiltration of the hypophysis with occasional involvement of the thyroid and adrenal glands. Here, we present the case of a 23-year-old woman diagnosed at autopsy with lymphocytic hypophysitis, with concomitant infiltrates in the thyroid gland and adrenal medulla, who died suddenly and unexpectedly with no other apparent cause of death. This case stresses the importance of greater awareness of the entity, and prompt treatment. Moreover, although the precise mechanism of death is unclear, this case raises the possibility of endocrine dysfunction as a contributing factor to sudden death and emphasizes the need to routinely sample the pituitary gland in young women with sudden unexpected death and no apparent cause.
