RESUMO

Background: In light of the substantial decline in physical activity during college years, this study aims to examine the relationship between positive self-esteem, physical literacy, and physical activity in order to investigate the mechanisms for improving physical activity in college students and to provide a foundation for future interventions. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was employed in this study. A total of 5,184 Participants, aged between 17 and 21 years (M = 18.97, SD = 1.10), completed the Positive Version of Rosenberg Self-esteem Scales, Perceived Physical Literacy Instruments, and the International Physical Activity Questionnaires. A mediation model was utilized to explore the associations among the three concepts. Results: The three regression models were as follows: Physical literacy = 18.03 + 0.98 *Self-esteem, Physical activity = 43.23 + 0.16 *Self-esteem, and Physical activity = 28.18 + 0.11 *Physical literacy. Positive self-esteem, physical literacy, and physical activity were significantly linked with each other. Physical literacy mediated 26.93% of the effect, indicating a partial mediator in the relationship between positive self-esteem and physical activity. Conclusion: The mediating effect of physical literacy on the relationship between positive self-esteem and physical activity was identified. Our findings support the development of positive self-esteem and physical literacy in college physical education curricula as part of an overall program to address students' physical inactivity at school and in the future. This study provides a new intervention perspective for improving physical inactivity in college students.

RESUMO

We investigate circularly polarized photoluminescence (PL) in the MoS2/MoO3 heterostructure, which was fabricated by transferring MoS2 monolayer to cover the MoO3 few layers on the SiO2/Si substrate. It is shown that the PL with the same helicity as the excitation light is dominant due to the inherent chiral optical selectivity, which allows exciting one of the valleys in MoS2 monolayer. The degree of polarization (DP), which characterizes the intensity difference of two chiral components of PL, is unequal for the right-handed and left-handed circularly polarized excitations in the MoS2/MoO3 heterostructure. This effect is different from the one in pristine MoS2. Our Raman spectra results together with ab initio calculations indicate the p-doped features of the MoS2 when it covers the MoO3 layers. Thus the possible explanation of the unequal DP is that the p-doping process generates a built-in voltage and therefore brings the difference of electron-hole overlaps between K and K' valleys. Namely the asymmetric valley polarization may be obtained in the MoS2/MoO3 heterostructure. Consequently, the circularly polarized PL caused by the electron-hole recombination at K and K' valleys manifests unequal DP for the right-handed and left-handed helix excitations. This asymmetric effect is further enhanced by decreasing the temperature in the MoS2/MoO3 heterostructure. Our investigation provides a unique platform for developing novel two-dimensional valleytronic devices.

RESUMO

Melanoma is responsible for the majority of deaths caused by skin cancer. Antitumor activity of microRNA-329 (miR-329) has been seen in several human cancers. In this study, we identify whether miR-329 serves as a candidate regulator in melanoma. Melanoma-related differentially expressed genes were screened with its potential molecular mechanism predicted. Melanoma tissues and pigmented nevus tissues were collected, where the levels of miR-329 and high-mobility group box 2 (HMGB2) were determined. To characterize the regulatory role of miR-329 on HMGB2 and the ß-catenin pathway in melanoma cell activities, miR-329 mimics, miR-329 inhibitors, and siRNA-HMGB2 were transfected into melanoma cells. Cell viability, migration, invasion, cell cycle, and apoptosis were assessed. miR-329 was predicted to influence melanoma by targeting HMGB2 via the ß-catenin pathway. High level of HMGB2 and low miR-329 expression were observed in melanoma tissues. HMGB2 was targeted and negatively regulated by miR-329. In melanoma cells transfected with miR-329 mimics or siRNA-HMGB2, cell proliferation, migration, and invasion were impeded, yet cell cycle arrest and apoptosis were promoted, corresponding to decreased levels of ß-catenin, cyclin D1, and vimentin and increased levels of GSK3ß and E-cadherin. Collectively, our results show that miR-329 can suppress the melanoma progression by downregulating HMGB2 via the ß-catenin pathway.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Substantial challenges have been reported in China in terms of the large number of adult patients with strabismus and their poor quality of life. Quality of life is a cultural concept that varies according to personal feelings and perceptions, and it is influenced by physical, psychological and social factors. However, to date, there has been no mixed-method research of the quality of life of Chinese adult patients with strabismus, and no conceptual model has been reported. This study aimed to utilize mixed methods to explore the influence of strabismus on health-related quality of life in Chinese adult patients and to develop a conceptual model. METHODS: Thirty adult patients with strabismus from three tertiary hospitals in China participated in the interview. In-depth one-to-one interviews were semi-structured and addressed strabismus-related symptoms and the impacts on the participants' quality of life. Transcripts were analysed to identify themes. A self-designed questionnaire was distributed to 448 patients, 437 of whom returned valid questionnaires. Descriptive statistics and x2 test were conducted. RESULTS: Five themes were revealed regarding the impact of strabismus on patient quality of life: appearance, daily activities, personal development, social interaction, and emotions. In the survey, the top three symptoms (n ≥ 70%) rated by the participants were monocular vision, eye fatigue and physical discomfort. Compared to those without diplopia, the patients who suffered diplopia more often reported experiencing the symptoms of blurred vision, monocular vision, physical discomfort, eye fatigue, cannot estimate depth well and increasing deviation size (all p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This study is the first to examine quality of life among Chinese strabismus patients using both qualitative and quantitative methods and proposing a conceptual model. Symptom burden and appearance were the two original reasons for the decreased quality of life, and they were also the triggers for strabismus patients to visit clinics and undergo surgery. The interventions to treat symptoms burden should be different between patients with and without diplopia.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The impact of strabismus on visual function, self-image, self-esteem, and social interactions decrease health-related quality of life (HRQoL).The purpose of this study was to evaluate and refine the adult strabismus quality of life questionnaire (AS-20) by using Rasch analysis among Chinese adult patients with strabismus. METHODS: We evaluated the fitness of the AS-20 with Rasch model in Chinese population by assessing unidimensionality, infit and outfit, person and item separation index and reliability, response ordering, targeting and differential item functioning (DIF). RESULTS: The overall AS-20 did not demonstrate unidimensional; however, it was achieved separately in the two Rasch-revised subscales: the psychosocial subscale (11 items) and the function subscale (9 items). The features of good targeting, optimal item infit and outfit, and no notable local dependence were found for each of the subscales. The rating scale was appropriate for the psychosocial subscale but a reduction to four response categories was required for the function subscale. No significant DIF were revealed for any demographic and clinical factors (e.g., age, gender, and strabismus types). CONCLUSION: The AS-20 was demonstrated by Rasch analysis to be a rigorous instrument for measuring health-related quality of life in Chinese strabismus patents if some revisions were made regarding the subscale construct and response options.

RESUMO

A large-dynamic-range current probe for microsecond pulsed vacuum breakdown research is fabricated. The basic principle of this probe is to turn the current signal to a voltage one via a load of fixed impedance and to test the voltage signal via a voltage divider of adjustable voltage ratio. With a segment of 40-Ω coaxial line, which is connected to the experimental chamber, and a self-fabricated two-stage resistor-capacitor voltage divider, the current probe is realized and is applied to test the vacuum breakdown current for 3-cm parallel-plate electrodes under microsecond pulses. The results show that the current probe is capable of responding to current signals with an amplitude of 10(-2)-10(3) A and a duration of 10(-2)-10(1) µs. Based on the current probe, the characteristics of the vacuum breakdown current under 30-µs quasi-sinusoidal pulses are summarized. The potential mechanisms for each type of current are also discussed in this paper.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the application of nursing-sensitive quality indicators in evaluating nursing efficacy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study involved the 97 nursing units of four general hospitals, where quality-improvement projects were implemented. The efficacy of the projects was measured through the use of nursing-sensitive quality indicators followed by a Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle. Nursing efficacy was observed before and after the implementation. RESULTS: Indicators revealed that patient satisfaction with basic nursing care, professional skills, and service attitude increased significantly after implementation of the quality-improvement projects (p<0.05). The incidence of nursing adverse events, including deficient care and accidents, also decreased significantly (p<0.01). However, patient satisfaction with the medical environment did not increase. CONCLUSIONS: Nursing-sensitive quality indicators are a valid and reliable way to determine if nursing quality-improvement projects are efficacious. They also promote continual improvement in nursing quality and provide a scientific evidence for setting implementation plan and detecting the implementation efficacy in nursing care, and possess certain promoting effects on the continual improvement of nursing quality.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study the changes of platelet in May-Hegglin anomaly (MHA) and the molecular pathogenesis mechanism. METHODS: Peripheral blood was drawn from the MHA proband, her father and her uncle. Platelet count and morphology were examined by automatic blood cell counter and microscopy, respectively. The platelet membrane protein was examined by flow cytometry. Membrane antibodies were determined by ELISA. PCR was used to amplify the exons 25, 31 approximately 32, 38 and 40 of the MYH 9 gene in the MHA patient and her diseased father. Furthermore, PCR products were sequenced, a specific point mutation was identified and inclusions (Dohle's body) in the neutrophil was detected by indirect immunofluorescence technique. RESULTS: It was proved that in MHA patients, platelet count was higher by cell counter than by microscope (P < 0.01). Giant platelet was 94% but platelet membrane proteins (CD41, CD61, CD42A, CD42b) were in normal range. Membrane antibodies was undetectable. An A5521G mutation (GAG-->AAG) in the exon 38 was found in the proband and her diseased father, resulting in a characteristic change of NMMHC-A1841 (Glutamic acid-->Arginine), which was not found in other members of the family and in normal controls. Spindle-like inclusions with fluorescence were clearly displayed in neutrophil cytoplasm. CONCLUSION: The molecular pathogenesis mechanism of May-Hegglin anomaly is the mutation in MYH 9 gene.

RESUMO

AIM:To investigate the correlation between the serum soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) and the clinicopathologic features and to evaluate the possible prognostic significance of sICAM-1 concentration in gastric cancer.METHODS: Thirty-four patients with gastric cancer were prospectively included and evaluated. Venous blood samples were collected before the surgery. Sera were obtained by centrifugation, and store at -30 degree until assay. The control group consisted of 20 healthy volunteers. Serum concentrations of ICAM-1 were measured with the quantitative sandwich enzyme immunoassay technic. Differences between the two groups were analyzed by Student's t test. x+2s of normal control sICAM-1 was taken as upper limit to calculate the positive rates.RESULTS:The mean value of serum ICAM-1 in patients with gastric cancer was 367.7&mgr;g/L plus minus 104.7&mgr;g/L and that of control group was 236.9&mgr;g/L plus minus 74.3&mgr;g/L, and the difference was significant (P < 0.001). The patients with tumor size of > = 5cm had significantly higher serum concentrations of sICAM-1 than those with smaller ones (406.7&mgr;g/L plus minus 90.2&mgr;g/L vs 319.9&mgr;g/L plus minus 105.3&mgr;g/L,P <0.01). Compared with stages I-II gastric cancer patients, patients with more advanced clinical stage (III-IIV) had higher levels of sICAM-1 (397.1&mgr;g/L plus minus 102.4&mgr;g/L vs 306.0&mgr;g/L plus minus 82.3&mgr;g/L,P <0.05).Difference was significant statistically in sICAM-1 levels between patients with positive lymph node status and those without lymph node involvement (403.6&mgr;g/L plus minus 99.7&mgr;g/L vs 302.7&mgr;g/L plus minus 81.4&mgr;g/L,P <0.01). No relation was observed between the level of sICAM-1 and grade of histological differentiation in the patients with gastric cancer.CONCLUSION:Serum sICAM-1 concentration may be a valuable parameter for predicting the prognosis and degree of the gastric cancer.
