BACKGROUND: The present study was designed to implement an interprofessional simulation-based education program for nursing students and evaluate the influence of this program on nursing students' attitudes toward interprofessional education and knowledge about operating room nursing. METHODS: Nursing students were randomly assigned to either the interprofessional simulation-based education or traditional course group. A before-and-after study of nursing students' attitudes toward the program was conducted using the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale. Responses to an open-ended question were categorized using thematic content analysis. Nursing students' knowledge about operating room nursing was measured. RESULTS: Nursing students from the interprofessional simulation-based education group showed statistically different responses to four of the nineteen questions in the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale, reflecting a more positive attitude toward interprofessional learning. This was also supported by thematic content analysis of the open-ended responses. Furthermore, nursing students in the simulation-based education group had a significant improvement in knowledge about operating room nursing. CONCLUSIONS: The integrated course with interprofessional education and simulation provided a positive impact on undergraduate nursing students' perceptions toward interprofessional learning and knowledge about operating room nursing. Our study demonstrated that this course may be a valuable elective option for undergraduate nursing students in operating room nursing education.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to precisely illustrate the pedicle-ossification tunnel (POT)-a spinal cord-free pathway in upper facet joint en bloc resection, which was reported as a comparatively neurological safer decompression surgery for thoracic ossification of ligamentum flavum (OLF). METHODS: From 1998 to 2009, 151 patients with thoracic spinal stenosis from OLF were diagnosed by CT, MRI, neurological examinations and confirmed by postoperative pathological examination. The existence and configuration of the POT were observed by interactive CT virtual endoscopic (CTVE) image with multiplanar reconstructions and confirmed by intraoperative observation. Posterior decompression by upper facet joint en bloc resection via POT was conducted in all patients and the advantage of surgery was evaluated by modified Japanese Orthopedic Association scores pre- and post-operatively. RESULTS: Through CTVE and intraoperative observation, no spinal cord was found present in POTs. OLF bloc divided the foramen into three parts: upper POT, OLF bloc and lower POT. The POT was the epidural space between the lateral border of OLF and its neighboring pedicles inner cortex. The recovery rate of upper facet joint en bloc resection via POT was 75.24 ± 18.01 %. CONCLUSIONS: POT is a spinal cord-free pathway between OLF bloc and its neighboring pedicles in thoracic spinal stenosis which can be applied in neuron preserved decompression surgery.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of Icariine on the expression of Smadl and Smad5 mRNA and protein levels in MC3T3-E1 cells in vitro. MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured in the presence of different concentrations of Icariine (0, 10, 40 and 80 ng/ml). Smad1 and Smad5 mRNA levels were detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and the expression of proteins was determined by western blotting, immunohistochemistry staining and immunofluorescence. Smad1 and Smad5 mRNA levels continuously increased in 10, 40 and 80 ng/ml of Icariine with time and the differences indicated statistical significance. Western blot analysis demonstrated that the Smad1 and Smad5 protein levels in the 10, 40 and 80 ng/ml groups were higher compared with the 0 ng/ml group at 24, 48 and 72 h, and the difference was statistically significant. Immunohistochemistry staining and immunofluorescence showed that the expression of the Smad1 and Smad5 proteins was higher in the cytoplasm and nuclei in the 10, 40 and 80 ng/ml groups compared with the 0 ng/ml group. Icariine has a direct stimulatory function on the differentiation of MC3T3-E1 osteoblastic cells in vitro, which may be mediated by increasing the production of Smad1 and Smad5 in osteoblasts.
