RESUMO

A polymesomorphic thermal phase-transition of a macrocyclic amphiphile consisting of aromatic groups and oligoethylene glycol (OEG) chains is reported. The macrocyclic amphiphile exists in a highly-ordered liquid crystal (LC) phase at room temperature. Upon heating, this macrocycle shows phase-transition from columnar-lamellar to nematic LC phases followed by crystallization before melting. Spectroscopic studies suggest that the thermally induced crystallization is triggered by a conformational change at the OEG chains. Interestingly, while the macrocycle returns to the columnar-lamellar phase after cooling from the isotropic liquid, it retains the crystallinity after cooling from the thermally-induced crystal. Thanks to this bistability, conductance switching was successfully demonstrated. A different macrocyclic amphiphile also shows an analogous phase-transition behavior, suggesting that this molecular design is universal for developing switchable and memorizable materials, by means of hysteretic phase-transition processes.

RESUMO

Formation of multiple crystalline phases of a multiblock amphiphilic macrocycle AT2B is demonstrated. AT2B forms a single crystal (Cr-α) by vapor diffusion and shows reversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal transition between two crystalline phases (Cr-α and Cr-ß) by a temperature change, and crystalline AT2B (Cr-ß) melts at 422 K, and the cooling rate from the melt influences the phase of the solid formed. By cooling at 1.0 K min-1, AT2B forms crystalline phases (Cr-γ and Cr-δ), which are different from both Cr-α and Cr-ß. On the other hand, cooling at 2.0 K min-1 results in the formation of an amorphous phase, and a mechanical stress also triggers a crystal-to-amorphous solid transition. Interestingly, the amorphous solid crystallizes to give the fifth crystalline phase (Cr-γ) upon heating before melting. It is suggested that these multiple phase transitions are driven by thermal conformational changes at the tetraethylene glycol chains of AT2B.

Vesicle formation is a fundamental kinetic process related to the vesicle budding and endocytosis in a cell. In the vesicle formation by artificial means, transformation of lamellar lipid aggregates into spherical architectures is a key process and known to be prompted by e.g. heat, infrared irradiation, and alternating electric field induction. Here we report UV-light-driven formation of vesicles from particles consisting of crumpled phospholipid multilayer membranes involving a photoactive amphiphilic compound composed of 1,4-bis(4-phenylethynyl)benzene (BPEB) units. The particles can readily be prepared from a mixture of these components, which is casted on the glass surface followed by addition of water under ultrasonic radiation. Interestingly, upon irradiation with UV light, micrometer-size vesicles were generated from the particles. Neither infrared light irradiation nor heating prompted the vesicle formation. Taking advantage of the benefits of light, we successfully demonstrated micrometer-scale spatiotemporal control of single vesicle formation. It is also revealed that the BPEB units in the amphiphile are essential for this phenomenon.

RESUMO

The amplification of molecular motions so that they can be detected by the naked eye (10(7) -fold amplification from the ångström to the millimeter scale) is a challenging issue in the development of mechanical molecular devices. In this context, the perfectly ordered molecular alignment of the crystalline phase has advantages, as demonstrated by the macroscale mechanical motions of single crystals upon the photochemical transformation of molecules. In the course of our studies on thermoresponsive amphiphiles containing tetra(ethylene glycol) (TEG) moieties, we serendipitously found that thermal conformational changes of TEG units trigger a single-crystal-to-single-crystal polymorphic phase transition. The single crystal of the amphiphile undergoes bending and straightening motion during both heating and cooling processes at the phase-transition temperatures. Thus, the thermally triggered conformational change of PEG units may have the advantage of inducing mechanical motion in bulk materials.

A multiblock amphiphilic molecule 1, with a tetrameric alternating sequence of hydrophilic and hydrophobic units, adopts a folded structure in a liposomal membrane like a multipass transmembrane protein, and is able to transport alkali metal cations through the membrane. Hill's analysis and conductance measurements, analyzed by the Hille equation, revealed that the tetrameric assembly of 1 forms a 0.53 nm channel allowing for permeation of cations. Since neither 3, bearing flexible hydrophobic units and forming no stacked structures in the membrane, nor 2, a monomeric version of 1, is able to transport cations, the folded conformation of 1 in the membrane is likely essential for realizing its function. Thus, function and hierarchically formed higher-order structures of 1, is strongly correlated with each other like proteins and other biological macromolecules.

RESUMO

Alternating amphiphilic multiblock molecules 1-4, involving fluorescent hydrophobic units, were designed as mimics for multipass transmembrane proteins. Fluorescence spectroscopy of 1-4 in liposomal membranes suggested the face-to-face stacking of the hydrophobic units to give folded structures as well as intermolecular assemblies.

Studies on the population dynamics of sea turtles require histological evaluation of the ontogenetic development and the activity of the gonads for reproduction. To investigate the growth-related changes of gonads in the immature male green turtle (Chelonia mydas), the histological changes of testes and epididymides and the localization of the androgen receptor, estrogen receptor alpha, estrogen receptor beta, and progesterone receptor were examined. The testes were categorized histologically into six developmental stages, and a scarce relationship between straight carapace length and gonadal development was confirmed based on the histological analysis. Several kinds of steroid hormone receptors were examined to show distributions in both testes and epididymides, for which their immunoreactivities were enhanced according to the developmental stage of the testes. These results suggest that straight carapace length is not an adequate indicator of maturity determination, whereas histological and immunohistochemical evaluations are useful in identifying the growth stages of green turtles, owing to the higher sensitivity to steroid hormones that appear during growth.
