RESUMO

The key technological implementation of sodium-ion batteries is converting biomass-derived hard carbons into effective anode materials. This becomes feasible if appropriate knowledge of the relations between the structure of carbonized biomass products, the mineral ash content in them, and Na storage properties is gained. In this study, we examine the simultaneous impact of the ash phase composition and carbon structure on the Na storage properties of hard carbons derived from spent coffee grounds (SCGs). The carbon structure is modified using the pre-carbonization of SCGs at 750 °C, followed by annealing at 1100 °C in an Ar atmosphere. Two variants of the pre-carbonization procedure are adopted: the pre-carbonization of SCGs in a fixed bed and CO2 flow. For the sake of comparison, the pre-carbonized products are chemically treated to remove the ash content. The Na storage performance of SCG-derived carbons is examined in model two and three Na-ion cells. It was found that ash-containing carbons outperformed the ash-free analogs with respect to cycling stability, Coulombic efficiency, and rate capability. The enhanced performance is explained in terms of the modification of the carbon surface by ash phases (mainly albite) and its interaction with the electrolyte, which is monitored by ex situ XPS.

RESUMO

This work presents the enhanced corrosion resistance of newly developed two-layer composite coatings deposited on low-carbon steel: electrodeposited zinc alloy coatings (Zn-Ni with 10 wt.% Ni (ZN) or Zn-Co with 3 wt.% Co (ZC), respectively) and a top ZrO2 sol-gel layer. Surface morphology peculiarities and anti-corrosion characteristics were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), atomic force microscopy (AFM), water contact angle (WCA) measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses, potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) curves, corrosion potential (Ecorr), polarization resistance (Rp) measurements (for a prolonged period of 25 days) and open-circuit potential (OCP). The results were compared with the corrosion peculiarities of usual zinc coating. The zirconia top coatings in both systems were amorphous and dense, possessing hydrophobic nature. The experimental data revealed an increased corrosion resistance and protective ability of the ZC system in comparison to that of ZN due to its smooth, homogeneous surface and the presence of poorly crystallized oxides (ZnO and Co3O4), both later playing the role of a barrier for corrosive agents.

RESUMO

In our study, transparent and conductive films of NiOx were successfully deposited by sol-gel technology. NiOx films were obtained by spin coating on glass and Si substrates. The vibrational, optical, and electrical properties were studied as a function of the annealing temperatures from 200 to 500 °C. X-ray Photoelectron (XPS) spectroscopy revealed that NiO was formed at the annealing temperature of 400 °C and showed the presence of Ni+ states. The optical transparency of the films reached 90% in the visible range for 200 °C treated samples, and it was reduced to 76-78% after high-temperature annealing at 500 °C. The optical band gap of NiOx films was decreased with thermal treatments and the values were in the range of 3.92-3.68 eV. NiOx thin films have good p-type electrical conductivity with a specific resistivity of about 4.8 × 10-3 Ω·cm. This makes these layers suitable for use as wideband semiconductors and as a hole transport layer (HTL) in transparent solar cells.

RESUMO

The present work explores in detail the effect of alkaline-basic electrolytes on the capacitance performance of biomass-derived carbonaceous materials used as electrodes in symmetric supercapacitors. The proof-of-concept is demonstrated by two commercial carbon products (YP-50F and YP-80F, Kuraray Europe GmbH, Vantaa, Finland), obtained from coconuts. The capacitance performance of YP-50F and YP-80F was evaluated in three types of basic electrolytes: 6 M LiOH, 6 M NaOH and 6 M KOH. It was found that the capacitance performance of YP-50F improved in the following order: NaOH < LiOH < KOH; Meanwhile, for YP-80F, the order changes to LiOH < NaOH < KOH. After 1000 cycles, the cycling stability of both YP-50F and YP-80F increased in the order NaOH < LiOH < KOH. This order of performance improvement is determined by both the electrolyte conductivity and the interaction between the functional groups of carbonaceous materials and alkaline electrolytes. The reactivity of the functional groups was assessed by postmortem SEM/EDS and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses of the electrodes after prolonged cycling.
