RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A hyperintense putaminal rim, putaminal hypointensity, and putaminal atrophy on T2-weighted MR images are findings suggestive of parkinsonian-dominant multiple system atrophy (MSA-P). However, putaminal hyperintensity on T1-weighted images, which has not been discussed in previous reports, is also frequently observed in patients with MSA-P. Here, we investigated whether putaminal hyperintensity on T1-weighted images is helpful to diagnose MSA-P. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with MSA-P (n = 17), Parkinson disease (PD; n = 37) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP; n = 11), and healthy control subjects (n = 16) were enrolled in this study. Two examiners, who were blind to the diagnoses, independently rated the putaminal hyperintensity on T1-weighted images (T1H), hyperintense putaminal rim on T2-weighted images (T2H), putaminal hypointensity on T2-weighted images (T2 L), and putaminal atrophy by using a visual analog scale, and performed a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. The area under the curve (AUC; minimum, 0.5; maximum, 1.0) was automatically calculated as a positive parameter, indicating its usefulness to differentiate between diseases. RESULTS: For differentiating patients with MSA-P from healthy control subjects, AUC values were 0.983 for T1H, 0.923 for T2H, 0.726 for T2 L, and 0.967 for putaminal atrophy. Between MSA-P and PD, the respective AUC values were 0.990, 0.921, 0.739, and 0.923; and between MSA-P and PSP, the respective AUC values were 0.984, 0.923, 0.727, and 0.967. CONCLUSIONS: All putaminal findings except T2 L were useful for the diagnosis of MSA-P. T1H was superior to T2H to differentiate MSA-P from other diseases.

RESUMO

SUMMARY: We report 3 patients with myoclonic epilepsy with ragged-red fibers (MERRF) diagnosed by mitochondrial A8344G mutation. Cerebellar ataxia was the first symptom in all patients. Conventional brain MR imaging showed atrophy of the superior cerebellar peduncles and the cerebellum in all patients and brain stem atrophy in 2 patients. In diffusion tensor analysis, fractional anisotropy of the superior cerebellar peduncles was mildly decreased in 1 patient. There was a discrepancy between clinical disabilities (severe) and radiologic abnormalities (mild). This discrepancy and atrophy of the superior cerebellar peduncles and the cerebellum may be important findings suggesting a diagnosis of MERRF.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Linear hyperintensity along the medial margin of the internal segment of the globus pallidus (GPi) on T2-weighted images from patients with Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) was recently reported. In this study, we aimed to compare the prevalence of this linear hyperintensity between patients with MJD and patients with Parkinson disease, and in control subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report the prevalence of linear hyperintensity along the GPi in 10 consecutive patients with MJD, 38 with Parkinson disease (PD), and 25 control subjects. We evaluated the prevalence of linear hyperintensities on T2-weighted axial images in these groups, and in nearly age-matched subjects younger than 60 years. We performed statistical analysis using the chi(2) test and Fisher exact test to compare the prevalence of the hyperintensity in each group. RESULTS: The prevalence of the linear hyperintensity in patients with MJD was significantly higher than that in patients with PD and in control subjects (P = .014 and .006, respectively). In subjects younger than 60 years, the prevalence of the hyperintensity in patients with MJD was significantly higher than that in patients with PD and control subjects (P = .011 and P < .001, respectively). In the control subjects, the linear hyperintensity tended to be greater in subjects older than 60 years (8/14 [57%] patients) than in subjects younger than 60 years (2/11 [18%] patients; P = .058). In patients with PD, the prevalence did not differ between patients older than 60 years and patients younger than 60 years. CONCLUSION: Linear hyperintensity along the globus pallidus is frequently found in patients with MJD, but it can be also found in patients with PD and in control subjects, probably because of the normal aging process.

RESUMO

The intra-abdominal tumor developing in the uterus and lung of a domestic Shorthair cat was examined histopathologically and immunohistochemically. The tumor showed a proliferation of both endometrial stromal and smooth muscle cells accompanied by prominent vasculature. There were well-differentiated endometrial glands, and tubuli made up a monolayer of eosinophilic cuboidal epithelium. Immunohistochemically, the spindle-shaped cells and half of the stromal-like cells reacted to caldesmon and desmin antibodies. The neoplastic epithelium expressed AE1/AE3 cytokeratin. Feline endometrial stromal tumor has, to the best of our knowledge, not been reported previously and has smooth muscle and glandular components that are a unique variant to the human counterpart.

RESUMO

Uterine leiomyosarcoma occurring spontaneously in a domestic golden hamster was examined histologically and immunohistochemically. The histological findings for this tumour were similar to those for leiomyosarcomas described in other species. Immunohistochemical examination demonstrated the positivity of neoplastic cells with alpha-smooth muscle actin and desmin. From the results mentioned above, the tumour of this case was revealed to be of smooth muscle origin. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a uterine leiomyosarcoma in domestic golden hamsters.

RESUMO

In 117 livers with fascioliasis, this study was focused on the number of Fasciola, the number and intrahepatic localization of affected hepatic ducts and bile ducts, and the degree of fibrosis in the hepatic segments and bile ducts. The degree of pathological changes in bile ducts caused by fascioliasis was classified into five levels. The site of Fasciola habitation was most often the hepatic ducts of the porta hepatis: it was the left hepatic duct in 101 livers and the right hepatic duct in 88 livers. Casts were prepared by infusing synthetic resin into the hepatic arterial, portal, hepatic venous and biliary systems of 15 bovine livers with fascioliasis and then examined. In the left lobe, quadrate lobe, and caudate process where atrophic fibrosis was noted, the bile ducts became rod-shaped by losing branches, and the samples resembled dead branches of liver. Portal branches were thinned or completely terminated with marked fibrosis. Fine and irregular newly formed bile ducts not parallel with portal branches were observed in livers with markedly chronic fascioliasis. Distal portal branches in the right lobe, caudate lobe, and papillary process showed hypertrophic proliferative changes. The arterial system was generally well developed in thickened walls of bile ducts and formed vascular beds, and surrounded the bile ducts as tubes. In livers with severe fibrosis, capillaries were markedly developed and resembled glass cotton.

RESUMO

Spontaneously occurring cutaneous tumours in three golden hamsters were characterized using histological, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural methods. Histologically, the tumours were composed of sheets of round to oval plasmacytoid cells with eccentrically placed nuclei. Tissue sections were weakly positive for anti-B lymphocyte antigen (BLA) staining. Ultrastructurally, large amounts of rough endoplasmic reticulum in the cytoplasm were observed. BLA positivity and characteristics of ultrastructure showed the plasma cell origin.

RESUMO

To clarify anatomical distribution of Fasciola infection, the vascular and ductal architectures of the liver were studied by means of corrosion cast technique using synthetic resin. The arteria hepatica propria (AP) passes as the arteria gastroduodenalis (AG); AP becomes the left trunk after the porta hepatis; AP passes on the right side of vena porta communis (VPC) and projects AG while curving in a U-shape below the portal vein. Hepatic veins located between the vena hepatica media (HM) and vena hepatica dextra (HD) varied widely among specimens and were irregular, including the vena hepatica dorso-lateralis sinistra (Hds), vena hepatica dorso-lateralis dextra (Hdd), vena hepatica lobi caudati (Hlc), venae hepaticae processus caudati (Hpc), venae hepaticae processus papillaris (Hpp), and the hepatic vein to the dorsal intermediate part, which directly or indirectly drained into the vena cava caudalis. The courses of the bovine hepatic veins were markedly diverse, and anastomoses between vena hepatica sinistra (HS) and Hds were observed in about a half of the livers. The portal vein entered the liver as VPC slightly above the centre of the right lobe on the visceral surface. The intermediate or transverse part [pars transversa trunci sinistri (PTS)] of truncus sinister (TS), which extends from the entry of the portal vein into the left lobe of the liver, was slightly arched downward [pars umbilicalis trunci sinistri (PUS)]. The portal vein further arched from the distal end of TS to the umbilical vein and ran towards the inter-lobar incision between the left lobe and quadrate lobe. Based on these branches, hepatic segments were determined as 13 or 14 areas. A total of 15 bile ducts were derived from various lobes. The hepatic duct was about 2.6-6 cm long from the confluence of the right and left hepatic ducts to the division of the cystic duct and the common hepatic duct.

RESUMO

'Granular cell' tumor observed in the malar subcutis of a Djungarian hamster was examined to determine its cellular origin. Histologically, the tumor consisted of a solid growth of oval or spindle-shaped large cells with abundant cytoplasm filled with eosinophilic granules that were periodic acid-Schiff-positive and diastase-resistant. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive to anti-vimentin and anti-desmin antibodies and a few cells showed positivity to anti-actin antibody as well. They did not react to myoglobin, S-100 protein, and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). Electron microscopic studies revealed that the tumor cells had pinocytotic vesicles, dense plaque and microfilaments. The first granular cell variant of myogenic tumor reported here in Djungarian hamsters was differentiated from granular cell tumor of Schwann cell origin.

RESUMO

A 17-year-old female crossbred cat developed a mass on the left ovary. The mass was solid, firm, 5.5 x 3.5 x 4.5 cm. The mass contained ectodermal components (skin and appendages), mesodermal components (osseous, cartilaginous and adipose structures), and endodermal components (glandular structures lined by columnar epithelium). The tumor was diagnosed as a solid, mature teratoma of the ovary.

RESUMO

A cerebral tumour was found in the right frontal lobe of a 7-year-old female mongrel cat. The mass showed infiltrative growth and caused deformation of the corpus callosum. Histopathologically, the tumour cells showed anaplasia, pleomorphism and mitotic figures. Necrosis and vascular proliferation were prominent. The neoplastic cells surrounded areas of necrosis, but as an indistinct pseudopalisade formation. Immunohistochemically, low numbers of tumour cells labelled positively for anti-glial fibrillary acidic protein and anti-S100 protein. Electron microscopically, the majority of tumour cells had no filaments and cytoplasmic processes, but the differentiated cells presented cytoplasmic filaments and glycogen granules. Based on these findings, the tumour was diagnosed as cerebral high-grade astrocytoma, glioblastoma.

RESUMO

Necropsy was performed on a mongrel male cat of unknown age weighing 1.3 kg, which probably encountered a traffic accident. Gross pathological examination of the brain revealed reddish colour of the right cerebral hemisphere and haemorrhages on the surface of the right frontal lobe to temporal lobe. Histologically, there was diffuse vacuolation in the cortex of the right frontal lobe and extensive haemorrhages in the base of brain. These histopathological findings were consistent with areas of abnormal signals found on post-mortem magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In this study, the MRI findings were identical to that reported in human cases of head trauma as well as histopathological changes.

RESUMO

Pulmonary hypertension syndrome (PHS), also known as ascites, in broiler chickens prevailed in the local area of Ibaraki prefecture, Japan, and was investigated epidemiologically, serologically, and pathologically. PHS developed in chickens older than 35 days of age when rapid increase of body weight started. Approximately 90% of affected birds were males, in which weight increase was greater than in females. Serologic test revealed that PHS broilers had an increase of hematocrit value. Pathologic studies indicated that the heart of affected birds had an obese-induced pressure and cold exposure triggered congestion in the right ventricle/cava and an increase in peritoneal fluid. These changes were consistent with the previous reports of PHS, so we designed the experiment of effects on cold-induced PHS birds in a temperature-controlled house. After the 10 PHS birds at 55 days were reared for 14 days in a temperature-controlled house at 20 +/- 5 C, ascites disappeared in eight birds and hematocrit values decreased to normal range in nine birds. Our finding indicated that temperature-controlled environment may be one solution to reduce mortality in PHS birds.

RESUMO

A leiomyosarcoma was found in the gizzard of a 57-day-old female broiler chicken weighing 1.8 kg. Grossly, the tumor mass, 13.0 x 8.5 x 10.0 cm, enveloped the gizzard and had a gelatinous appearance due to the rich production of mucin. Miliary metastatic tumors were noted in the liver. Histopathologically, there was marked production of mucus throughout the tumor tissue, and densely or loosely arranged long spindle-shaped leiomyosarcoma cells proliferated. The tumor cells had a low rate of mitosis, showed slight cellular atypia, and, immunohistochemically, were positive for actin, alpha-smooth muscle actin, and desmin. Electron microscopically, various amounts of microfibrils with focal densities, dense patches, and basal plates were observed.

RESUMO

A 20-year-old female Japanese macaque, weighing 8.7 kg, developed severe pulmonary acariasis. Numerous whitish nodules, 2-4 mm, were scattered throughout the lungs. Histologically multifocal granulomatous lesions consisting of a large number of eosinophils, epithelioid cells, foreign body type giant cells, and collagen fibers were aggregated around the mait bodies. Numerous mast cells were also detected in the lesions by toluidine blue staining, and tested positive for tryptase by immunohistochemistry. This may be the first reported case of severe pulmonary acariasis in a Japanese macaque.

RESUMO

An apocrine adenocarcinoma was observed in the subcutis of the abdomen of golden hamster. Histologically, the tumor cells irregularly formed multiple layers of cysts and some detached cells were presented in the cystic space. PAS stain with alpha-amylase digestion revealed PAS-positive alpha-amylase-resistant granules in the cytoplasm. Immunohistochemically, cytokeratin was demonstrated in the tumor cells. By electron microscopy, the tumor cells had an oval nucleus with invagination, abundant cytoplasmic organelles and microvilli protruding into the intercellular spaces.

RESUMO

A subcutaneous malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) was observed in the region between the right posterior trunk and right hind limb of a 2-year-old male Djungarian hamster weighing 45 g. Histologically, the tumor consisted of bizarre multinucleated giant cells, histiocytic cells, and fibroblastic cells with a storiform pattern, and was considered to be of the storiform-pleomorphic type of MFH. Severe nuclear atypia with prominent nucleoli and many mitotic figures was also observed. Electron microscopy demonstrated fibroblastic cells and histiocytic cells. The fibroblastic cells were spindle-shaped, and sometimes had an invaginated nucleus. The histiocytic cells were polygonal with an oval or kidney-shaped nucleus. The cytoplasm of both cells contained numerous free ribosomes, small amounts of rough endoplasmic reticulum, and round mitochondria. Tumor cells were immunohistochemically positive for vimentin, and were thought to be of undifferentiated mesenchymal cell origin. This is the first report of spontaneous MFH in a hamster.

RESUMO

We have reported that collagen metabolism was improved by the administration of Eucommia ulmoides OLIVER leaf. In this paper, we examine the granuloma maturation and deposition of collagen in the granuloma of rats due to the oral administration of this leaf. After 3 weeks of the oral administration, granuloma formation was induced by the formalin soaked filter paper-pellet method. A week later, the developing granuloma was dissected. Granuloma formation was significantly increased due to ingestion of the dried leaf at a dose of 1.8 g/kg of body weight/d. The collagen content in the granuloma was also significantly increased. In the case of the collagen profile, the pepsin-solubilized collagen content and its relative percentage to the total collagen were significantly higher than in the control. Histochemical examination showed that the granuloma tissues were well developed, and displayed many newly synthesized capillary vessels and a greater quantity of fibroblasts and monocytes in the 1.8 g leaf group. High density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol and triglyceride content in the blood plasma were significantly higher than in the control. These results show that granuloma maturation was accelerated and the energy was supplied from fatty acid metabolism. The administration of Eucommia ulmoides OLIVER leaf may be effective at speeding up the wound healing process.

RESUMO

A case of dissecting aortic aneurysm in a 4-year-old male thoroughbred horse is reported. The horse had a history of inflammation in the right thigh and a fever 2 weeks before sudden death. At necropsy, aortic aneurysms were observed from the aortic valve to the aortic arch, spreading over a distance of 40 cm. An irregular rupture of the intima of the ascending aorta was located in the cardiac side of a ramification to the tunica branchiocephalicus communis. An intramural haematoma, apparent on the cut surface and in the pericardium, had caused cardiac tamponade and sudden death.

RESUMO

A malignant basal cell tumor was found in the skin of the abdomen of a female Djungarian hamster of unknown age and weighing 40 g. Histologically, the tumor mass was composed of cells resembling the basal cells of the epidermis, and these cells exhibited solid type proliferation. In the tumor tissue and necrotic foci, horn cysts were observed. Immunohistochemically, cytokeratin was present in the tumor cells and horncysts. By electron microscopic examination, the tumor cells had scanty cell organelles and a few desmozomes. This paper describes a rare malignant basal cell tumor in a Djungarian hamster.
