RESUMO

In recent measurements of the scissors mode in radiative decay experiments, transition strengths were observed that were double that expected from theory and systematics well established from measurements on the radiative excitation channel, that is, using nuclear resonance fluorescence (NRF). Additional strength as measured with NRF can only be present as heretofore unobserved branching or fragmentation of the scissors mode. Such possibilities were investigated in a transmission NRF measurement on the deformed, odd-mass ^{181}Ta, using a quasimonoenergetic γ-ray beam at two beam energies. This measurement further influences applications using transmission NRF to assay or detect odd-mass fissile isotopes. A large branching, ≈75%, of small resonances to excited states was discovered. In contrast, previous studies using NRF of the scissors-mode strength in odd-mass nuclei assumed no branching existed. The presently observed branching, combined with the observed highly fragmented elastic strength, could reconcile the scissors-mode strength observed in NRF measurements with the expectations for enhanced scissors-mode strength from radiative decay experiments.

RESUMO

Reported in this article is the generation of unique polarized x-rays in the sub-MeV region by means of the Thomson backscattering of the Nd:YAG laser photon with a wavelength of 1064 nm on the 150 MeV electron from the microtron accelerator. The maximum energy of the x-ray photons is estimated to be about 400 keV. The total energy of the backscattered x-ray pulse is measured with an imaging plate and a LYSO scintillator. The angular divergence of the x-rays is also measured by using the imaging plate. We confirm that the x-ray beam is polarized according to the laser polarization direction with the Compton scattering method. In addition, we demonstrate the imaging of the object shielded by lead with the generated x-rays.

RESUMO

Analyzing the solar system abundance, we find two universal scaling laws concerning the p and s nuclei. They indicate that the gamma process in supernova (SN) explosions is the most probable origin of the p nuclei that has been discussed with many possible nuclear reactions and sites in about 50 years. In addition, the scalings lead to new concepts: a universality of the gamma process and a new nuclear cosmochronometer. We carry out gamma-process nucleosynthesis calculations for typical core-collapse SN explosion models, and the results satisfy the observed scalings.

RESUMO

A 49-year-old male who had been diagnosed as having amebic liver abscess when he was 32-year-old was admitted to our hospital with fever and watery diarrhea. Ultrasonography and CT examination demonstrated a solitary abscess in the right lobe of the liver. Cysts of Entamoeba histolytica were detected in the stool and an aspiration of the liver abscess looked like anchovy paste. Serum amebic antibody by the IFA method was positive and the case was diagnosed as amebic liver abscess. The patient was treated with metronidazole, and percutaneous transhepatic abscess drainage was performed. The liver abscess decreased remarkably in size and serum amebic antibody was negative after the treatment. Recurrence of amebic liver abscess is rare and we report this case with some literature.

RESUMO

In general, the problem of reconstructing an object from its Fourier modulus has no solution when the Fourier modulus is contaminated by noise. Therefore a quasi solution, which we call the ideal estimate of the object to be reconstructed, is defined here based on the concept of territories of the convergence objects of the error-reduction algorithm, and a method that attempts to find that solution is presented. Keeping in mind that the ideal estimate is one of the output-stagnation objects of the hybrid input-output algorithm, we modify the hybrid input-output algorithm so that the output-stagnation objects can be located even when the value of the feedback parameter is not infinitesimally small, and this modified algorithm is combined with the hybrid input-output algorithm itself. The results of computer simulations carried out to test the performance of the proposed method are shown.
