RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: With the sudden global shift to online learning modalities, this study aimed to understand the unique challenges and experiences of emergency remote teaching (ERT) in nursing education. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive online international cross-sectional survey to capture the current state and firsthand experiences of ERT in the nursing discipline. Our analytical methods included a combination of traditional statistical analysis, advanced natural language processing techniques, latent Dirichlet allocation using Python, and a thorough qualitative assessment of feedback from open-ended questions. RESULTS: We received responses from 328 nursing educators from 18 different countries. The data revealed generally positive satisfaction levels, strong technological self-efficacy, and significant support from their institutions. Notably, the characteristics of professors, such as age (p = 0.02) and position (p = 0.03), influenced satisfaction levels. The ERT experience varied significantly by country, as evidenced by satisfaction (p = 0.05), delivery (p = 0.001), teacher-student interaction (p = 0.04), and willingness to use ERT in the future (p = 0.04). However, concerns were raised about the depth of content, the transition to online delivery, teacher-student interaction, and the technology gap. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings can help advance nursing education. Nevertheless, collaborative efforts from all stakeholders are essential to address current challenges, achieve digital equity, and develop a standardized curriculum for nursing education.

RESUMO

This follow-up survey on trends in Nursing Informatics (NI) was conducted by the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) Student and Emerging Professionals (SEP) group as a cross-sectional study in 2019. There were 455 responses from 24 countries. Based on the findings NI research is evolving rapidly. Current ten most common trends include: clinical quality measures, clinical decision support, big data, artificial intelligence, care coordination, education and competencies, patient safety, mobile health, description of nursing practices and evaluation of patient outcomes. The findings help support the efforts to efficiently use resources in the promotion of health care activities, to support the development of informatics education and to grow NI as a profession.

This prospective study tested a model to depict associations between a number of individual characteristics and 6-month glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels in adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Adolescents (N = 232) aged 10-19 years with T1D were recruited from a medical center in Taiwan. Demographic characteristics, emotional autonomy, problem-solving ability, self-efficacy at baseline, and self-management information three months after baseline were collected using a self-reported questionnaire. HbA1c levels 6 months after study commencement were obtained from medical records. Structural equation modeling was used to test the model. Higher baseline self-efficacy and self-management at 3 months were directly associated with lower 6-month HbA1c levels. Higher baseline problem-solving ability and self-efficacy were directly associated with higher 3-month self-management, and higher baseline problem-solving ability was directly associated with higher baseline self-efficacy. Higher baseline emotional autonomy was directly associated with lower 6-month HbA1c levels but indirectly associated with higher 6-month HbA1c levels through the mediation of lower problem-solving ability, self-efficacy, and 3-month self-management. Findings indicate that improving self-management is essential to improving subsequent glycemic control, which might be achieved by enhancing problem-solving ability and self-efficacy. Strengthening problem-solving ability could diminish the negative impact of emotional autonomy on subsequent glycemic control in adolescents with T1D.

RESUMO

Due to the corona (COVID-19) pandemic, several countries are currently conducting non-face-to-face education. Therefore, teachers of nursing colleges have been carrying out emergency remote education. This study developed a questionnaire to understand the status of Emergency Remote Learning (ERL) in nursing education internationally, translated it into 7 languages, and distributed it to 18 countries. A total of 328 nursing educators responded, and the most often used online methods were Social networking technology such as Facebook, Google+ and Video sharing platform such as YouTube. The ERL applied to nursing education was positively evaluated as 3.59 out of 5. The results of the study show that during the two semesters nursing college professors have well adapted to this unprecedent crisis of teaching. The world after COVID-19 has become a completely different place, and nursing education should be prepared for 'untact' education.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To determine the efficacy of swaddling and heel warming on pain response in neonates following heel stick. BACKGROUND: Swaddling has been suggested to reduce pain response in neonates during heel stick. Heel warming is also often performed for drawing blood easily before heel stick. However, the efficacy of both on pain response is unclear. DESIGN: A randomised controlled study was used. METHODS: Twenty-five neonates were randomly assigned to each of the control, swaddling and heel-warming groups. Heart rate, oxygen saturation Neonatal Infant Pain Scale and duration of crying were used to assess pain reactivity and pain recovery. A greater heart rate and Neonatal Infant Pain Scale increase, or oxygen saturation decrease, indicated higher pain reactivity. A longer duration of heart rate and oxygen saturation changes after heel stick back to baseline indicated a longer pain recovery. RESULTS: The decrease in oxygen saturation in swaddling group was significantly greater than that in heel-warming group. The increase in the Neonatal Infant Pain Scale in control group was significantly higher than that in swaddling group. The heart rate recovery time in control group and swaddling group was significantly longer than that in heel-warming group. The oxygen saturation recovery time in control group was significantly longer than that in heel-warming group. The duration of crying in control group was significantly longer than those in swaddling group and heel-warming group. CONCLUSION: Both swaddling and heel warming decreased the pain response of neonates during heel stick. Heel warming resulted in a lower pain response than did swaddling for neonates, particularly in terms of pain recovery. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Heel warming could become a routine practice to decrease the pain response of neonates during heel stick.
