RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The urgent tasks of experimental balneology are to design and investigate of the action of native mineral waters (MW) enriched with essential trace elements in order to improve their therapeutic and prophylactic effects. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanisms of direct action of the cycle intake of Essentuki MWs modified with selenium (Essentuki Novaya - MW1, Essentuki No. 4 - MW2) on healthy animals. MATERIAL AND METHODS: According to the experimental conditions, 102 male albino rats were divided into 7 groups using a simple randomization method. Group 1 (n=15) received only drinking water (DW) (a control group); Group 2 (n=13) used native MW1; Group 3 (n=13) took native MW2; Group 4 (n=15) had MW1 with selenium (MW1Se1 - 3 mcg/kg); Group 5 (n=15) received MW1Se2; Group 6 (n=15) had MW2Se1 - 300 mcg/kg; and Group 7 (n=16) used MW2Se2. RESULTS: After cycle drinking, the body weight of the animals in the experimental groups did not significantly differ from that in the control group and was determined within the normal species range. X-ray densitometry showed that the body fat composition in the rats was lower than the control values only after MW1Se1, MW1Se2, and MW2Se1 cycles. The rat lipid spectrum in different groups displayed differences: the atherogenic index was low after MW1, MW1Se1, and MW1Se2 cycles. The blood glucose levels increased in the rats after drinking native MWs (F=2.7; p=0.01). After selenium-modified MW cycles, the blood glucose levels corresponded to the control values. The blood of experimental and control animals showed no differences in bone mineral density (BMD), levels of hormones (insulin, thyroxine, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and end products of protein metabolism. Selenium-modified Essentuki No. 4 changed the orientation of functional relationships from negative to positive ones between glucose and BMD. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that cycle drinking with native and selenium-enriched Essentuki MWs differently affect the animals. The Essentuki Novaya MW (MW1, MW1Se1, and MW1Se2) drinking cycles predominantly affected in reducing blood atherogenic lipids. The volume of an animal fat component was lower after selenium-modified Essentuki Novaya and Essentuki No. 4 water (MW1Se1, MW1Se2, and MW2Se1) cycles. A direct relationship between DHEA and BMD was found in animals after using the selenium-enriched Essentuki No. 4 cycle.

RESUMO

The present study involved 40 children aged 7-14 suffering from chronic pyelonephritis and having an environmentally burdened medical history. The combined spa treatment included either traditional peloid therapy applied to the lumbar region or the specially developed treatment using the adaptive-reflexive method that allowed the therapeutic effect to be gradually spread over various reflex zones. Mud applications under the new scheme were shown to be more adequate and sparing because they ensured gradual sequential involvement of different reflex zones that is of special importance for the patients having an environmentally burdened medical history and characterized by the impaired adaptive capacity. The advantage of the proposed peloid-therapeutic modality is confirmed by the reduction in the frequency of the patients' complaints and the more pronounced dynamics of the signs of mikrohematuria, pyuria, and oxaluria combined with the restoration of the anti-crystal-forming urinary activity in response to calcium phosphates in all patients.

RESUMO

A total of 50 children presenting with environmental disadaptation syndrome have been treated based at N.K. Krupskaya health resort (Zheleznovodsk). The therapy included the consumption of mineral water with low salt content from the Slavyansky spring at a dose of 3-5 cub.ml per 1 kg b.w. 30 min before meal, thrice daily. Its influence on the radionuclide elimination rate from the organism of the patients previously exposed to enhanced levels of background radiation was estimated from the results of spectrometric and radiochemical analysis of their urine. It was shown that introduction of drinking mineral water into the program of combined spa and resort-based therapy causes a 2-3-fold increase in the cesium excretion rate and thereby reduces the internal radiation load.

RESUMO

A method for the spa-and-resort treatment of children residing under conditions of ecological discomfort has been developed. It includes drinking weakly mineralized hydrocarbonate-sodium sulfate-sodium-calcium carbon dioxide water from the Slavyanovsk spring and slightly carbonaceous mineral baths in combination with magnetotherapy. This treatment is shown to improve characteristics of somatic and neurological status, activate metabolic processes, accelerate lymphokinesis and blood circulation. Collectively, these effects enhanced the children's health potential.

RESUMO

Combined balneotherapy including intake and external application of Zheleznovodsk-type mineral water was given to 60 children at the age from 7 to 14 years presenting with environmental dysadaptation syndrome. This treatment ensured favourable dynamics of clinical signs of asthenovegetative, dyspeptic, and pain syndromes. Moreover, it exerted beneficial influence on the mechanisms of vegetative regulation, improved the psychoemotional status of the patients and functional capacity of their immune system.

RESUMO

This paper is devoted to a topical problem of rehabilitative therapy of children with ecological disadaptation syndrome under the conditions of a health resort. Original approaches to the improvement of efficiency of treatment are described with reference to different therapeutic modalities. The study demonstrated advantages of modulation peloidotherapy targeting adaptive and reflectory responsiveness of the patients over traditional methods of mud application.

RESUMO

Experiments on 80 Wistar rats revealed the ability of Essentuki mineral waters to stimulate the reserves and sensitivity of the intestinal serotonin-producing system. A clinical trial on two groups of children (exposed to low-dose ionizing radiation or with posttraumatic astheno-neurotic syndrome) found out pronounced positive changes in the psychological status of the children which progressed in correlation with an increase of the blood serotonin levels.

RESUMO

Children suffering from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) (n-132) were exposed to low-frequency variable magnetic field. Therapeutic response registered consisted of analgetic and anti-inflammatory effects most pronounced in 14-19 mT regimen. The addition of radon baths to the above exposure resulted in higher effectiveness of the treatment due to involvement of pathogenetic JRA mechanisms.
