RESUMO

Improving the electrochemical performance of biomass-derived carbon electrode-active materials for supercapacitor applications has recently attracted considerable attention. Herein, we develop hybrid electrode materials from rice-husk-derived porous carbon (RH-C) materials and ß-Ni(OH)2 via a facile solid-state reaction strategy comprising two steps. The prepared RH-C/Ni(OH)2 (C-Ni) was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) (energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS)), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to acquire the physical and chemical information, which was used to demonstrate the successful fabrication of C-Ni. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measurement results confirmed that the thermal stability of C-Ni changed due to the presence of Ni(OH)2. As expected, C-Ni possesses a high capacitance of ∼952 F/g at a current density of 1.0 A/g. This result is higher than that of pure biomass-based carbon materials under the three-electrode system. This facile preparation method, which was used to synthesize the electrode-active materials, can extend to the value-added utility of other waste biomass materials as high-performing supercapacitor electrodes for energy storage applications.

The effects of chelating agents and salts on the interfacial characteristics and oxidative stability of oil-in-water emulsions containing an endogenous concentration of metal ions were investigated. Emulsions were fabricated by high-pressure homogenization of 10% oil phase (sacha inchi oil) and 90% aqueous phase (1% Tween 60 in phosphate buffer solution, pH 7, 50 mM). The oxidative stability of the emulsions was characterized by measuring peroxide values and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances throughout storage. Endogenous iron and copper ion levels in the emulsions were detected by atom absorption spectroscopy as 1.99 and 0.86 ppm, respectively. Incorporation of chelating agents, either ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid or sodium citrate, into the emulsions effectively inhibited lipid oxidation, showing that even these low levels of endogenous metal ions ( parts per million) were sufficient to promote oxidation. Conversely, the addition of monovalent salts, NaCl or KCl, slightly increased the rate of lipid oxidation in the emulsions, which was attributed to their impact on the physical properties of the surfactant layer at the oil droplet surfaces. The impact of chelating agents and salts on the electrical characteristics (ξ potential) and relaxation time (TR) of the surfactant-coated lipid droplets were characterized by particle electrophoresis and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, respectively. The chelating agents and salts altered the surface potential of the droplets, indicative of a change in the adsorption of metal ions to the droplet surfaces. Moreover, they altered the arrangement of surface-active molecules at the droplet surfaces, thereby impacting the contact of pro-/antioxidants with the oil phase. These results have important implications for the formulation of emulsion-based materials that are more stable to lipid oxidation.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) + quercetin (QE) used in combination. DHA and QE are natural compounds derived from various foods and have been demonstrated to exert anti­inflammatory effects The protein mRNA expression involved in the nuclear factor (NF)-κB and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling pathway was analyzed by western blot analysis and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction methods respectively, other cytokines were detected by an enzyme­linked immunosorbent assay kit. The results of the present study demonstrated that combined treatment of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)­stimulated RAW264.7 cells with DHA + QE decreased the levels of pro­inflammatory mediators to a greater extent than QE or DHA alone. Additionally, DHA + QE synergistically suppressed nitric oxide, prostaglandin E2 and cyclooxygenase-2 levels. Molecular­level studies indicated that the DHA + QE combination can significantly inhibit the mRNA expression of NF­κB subunits p50 and p65, extracellular signal­regulated kinase (ERK) 1/2 and c­JUN N­terminal kinase (JNK) 1/2, which suggests that the NF­κB signalling pathway is involved in the synergistic effects observed. Furthermore, western blot analysis demonstrated that DHA + QE synergistically inhibit the phosphorylation of p50, p65, ERK1/2 and JNK1/2. This finding indicates that the enhanced anti­inflammatory effects of the combined compounds are achieved by suppressing NF­κB and MAPK signalling in LPS­stimulated RAW264.7 cells. The results of the present study suggest that DHA and QE in combination may be utilized as potent anti­inflammatory compounds, with potential preventative or palliative effects on obesity, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases.

Exopolysacharides (EPS) produced by Lactobacillus acidophilus play an important role in food processing with its well-recognized antioxidant activity. In this study, a L. acidophilus mutant strain with high-yielding EPS (2.92±0.05 g/L) was screened by chemical mutation (0.2 % diethyl sulfate). Plackett-Burman (PB) design and response surface methodology (RSM) were applied to optimize the EPS fermentation parameters and central composite design (CCD) was used to optimize the EPS extraction parameters. A strain with high-yielding EPS was screened. It was revealed that three parameters (Tween 80, dipotassium hydrogen phosphate and trisodium citrate) had significant influence (P < 0.05) on the EPS yield. The optimal culture conditions for EPS production were: Tween 80 0.6 mL, dipotassium hydrogen phosphate 3.6 g and trisodium citrate 4.1 g (with culture volume of 1 L). In these conditions, the maximum EPS yield was 3.96±0.08 g/L. The optimal extraction conditions analyzed by CCD were: alcohol concentration 70 %, the ratio of material to liquid (M/L ratio) 1:3.6 and the extraction time 31 h. In these conditions, the maximum EPS extraction yield was 1.48±0.23 g/L. It was confirmed by the verification experiments that the EPS yield from L. acidophilus mutant strains reached 5.12±0.73 g/L under the optimized fermentation and extraction conditions, which was 3.8 times higher than that of the control (1.05±0.06 g/L). The results indicated that the strain screening with high-yielding EPS was successful and the optimized fermentation and extraction conditions significantly enhanced EPS yield. It was efficient and industrially promising.

BACKGROUND: The decreased reproductive capacity of men is an important factor contributing to infertility. Accumulating evidence has shown that Electromagnetic radiation potentially has negative effects on human health. However, whether radio frequency electromagnetic radiation (RF-EMR) affects the human reproductive system still requires further investigation. Therefore, The present study investigates whether RF-EMR at a frequency of 900 MHz can trigger sperm cell apoptosis and affect semen morphology, concentration, and microstructure. METHODS: Twenty four rats were exposed to 900 MHz electromagnetic radiation with a special absorption rate of 0.66 ± 0.01 W/kg for 2 h/d. After 50d, the sperm count, morphology, apoptosis, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC), representing the sum of enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants, were investigated. Western blotting and reverse transcriptase PCR were used to determine the expression levels of apoptosis-related proteins and genes, including bcl-2, bax, cytochrome c, and capase-3. RESULTS: In the present study, the percentage of apoptotic sperm cells in the exposure group was significantly increased by 91.42% compared with the control group. Moreover, the ROS concentration in exposure group was increased by 46.21%, while the TAC was decreased by 28.01%. Radiation also dramatically decreased the protein and mRNA expression of bcl-2 and increased that of bax, cytochrome c, and capase-3. CONCLUSION: RF-EMR increases the ROS level and decreases TAC in rat sperm. Excessive oxidative stress alters the expression levels of apoptosis-related genes and triggers sperm apoptosis through bcl-2, bax, cytochrome c and caspase-3 signaling pathways.
