RESUMO

Eosinophilic cystitis, a rare disease of unknown origin, simulates bladder neoplasms and interstitial cystitis. Since the first report by Brown in 1959, 35 additional cases have appeared in the literature. Reported here are 3 cases with advanced forms of this disease which failed to respond to antibiotics, antihistamines, steroids, fulguration, and, finally were subjected to cystectomy and urinary diversion after periods of five to fifteen years.

RESUMO

Presence of a specific 17 beta-estradiol-binding protein in prostates of patients with adenocarcinoma without hormonal manipulation prior to surgical resection has been reported by us earlier. The present study involves 40 patients with carcinoma of prostate analyzed during the period December, 1974, through June, 1978. Thirty-four patients had metastatic disease, 26 of these were manipulated hormonally after and 8 prior to receptor protein assay. The other 6 were in clinical Stage C and were subjected to transurethral resection alone. The study confirms our earlier report and outlines the role of 17 beta-estradiol (E2) and possibly 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) receptor protein in hormonally responsive and refractory patients. Based on the preliminary findings it seems possible to classify the prostatic carcinoma similar to human mammary cancer for the purpose of selecting patients for endocrine manipulation or treatment with other available modalities.

RESUMO

Identification of specific 17-beta-estradiol, 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone and progesterone binding proteins in 10 patients with metastatic adenocarcinoma of the prostate is presented. A synthetic androgen radioligand (R1881) and a synthetic progesterone (R5020) were used. In all but 1 patient receptor protein assays were done before hormonal manipulation. Based on the preliminary findings it seems probable that prostatic carcinoma might be categorized for endocrine therapy similar to the method used for carcinoma of the breast.

RESUMO

The use of ultrasound in the diagnostic and therapeutic management of 5 patients with renal abscesses is described. A spectrum of ultrasonic findings was noted, with the majority of the lesions being anechoic (3 cases). However, a few lesions showed a mixed pattern (2 cases). Ultrasonic aspiration of abscess fluid for culture and sensitivity obviated an operation in 1 case. For the first time, ultrasonically guided, percutaneous, indwelling catheter drainage of a renal carbuncle is reported. Since the patient had failed to respond to systemic antibiotic therapy this technique saved the patient from undergoing an operation. The clinical and ultrasonic findings in the 6 previous case reports of abscesses are reviewed.
