RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The second wave of COVID-19 has emerged with the addition of vivid types of oral manifestations. Immunosuppression caused by COVID-19 results in an exacerbation of pre-existing infections. Recently, in the backdrop of COVID-19 expression, a notable rise in the incidence of secondary infections, both fungal and bacterial, have been reported either during the disease or as a post-COVID manifestation. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old male diabetic COVID-19 patient reported with a chief complaint of pain in the right side maxillary region for 3 months and the passage of content from the oral cavity into the nose. Intraoral examination revealed missing teeth i.r.t. 12 to 17, denuded mucosa with exposed necrotic bone and an oroantral opening. Sequestrectomy was done and the tissue was sent for histopathological examination which revealed necrotic bone interspersed with broad aseptate fungal hyphae branched at right angles along with actinomycotic colonies and Candidal hyphae in few areas. Based on histopathological findings, a final diagnosis of mixed infections leading to Maxillary Osteomyelitis was given. No recurrence was noticed after 3 months of follow up. CONCLUSIONS: The occurrence of oral infections even after the remission period of COVID-19 signifies an alarming sign both for the patient and clinicians monitoring the oral health status during the follow-up period. To our knowledge, this is the first such case (three oral infections as a post covid manifestation in a single diabetic patient) reported in the literature till date.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to compare the haemodynamic profiles of obese and non-obese pregnant women, alongside describing the haemodynamic changes that occur in hypertensive disorders of pregnancies with an Appropriate for Gestational Age Fetus (HDP-AGA) beyond 34 weeks' gestation. STUDY DESIGN: In this prospective case-control study, maternal haemodynamic assessment was carried out by a trained operator using an UltraSonic Cardiac Output Monitor during a routine clinical assessment after 34 weeks of gestation. Indexed and non-indexed parameters were evaluated. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Maternal hemodynamic parameters. RESULTS: Obese and non-obese women did not differ for non-indexed parameters (Cardiac Output, Stroke Volume, Systemic Vascular Resistance). Using indexed parameters, corrected for Body Surface Area, obese women presented significantly lower Cardiac Index z-score (-0.23 ± 0.5 vs 0.26 ± 1.2; p = 0.004), Stroke Volume Index z-score (-0.27 ± 0.8 vs 0.31 ± 1.0; p < 0.0001) and significantly higher Systemic Vascular Resistance Index (0.16 ± 0.8 vs -0.36 ± 0.7; p < 0.0001). In obese women, HDP-AGA (n = 19) had significantly higher Systemic Vascular Resistance Index z-score (1.26 ± 1.7 vs 0.16 ± 0.8; P = 0.009) and significantly lower Stroke Volume Index (-0.68 ± 0.8 vs -0.27 ± 0.8; 0.049). CONCLUSION: Using indexed parameters, differences in haemodynamic profiles between obese and non obese women can be highlighted. Obese women seem to present a cardiac maladapation to the pregnancy (reduced cardiac index and stroke volume and increased vascular resistance) that could explain the increased risk of complications in this subgroup.

BACKGROUND: This study was planned to compare and evaluate the staining efficacy of Leishman-Giemsa cocktail (LG), Papanicolaou, and Giemsa stain (G) in potentially malignant disorders and malignant lesions. AIMS: To evaluate the quality of nuclear and cytoplasmic staining of LG with G, and rapid Papanicolaou stain (Pap) and to compare the total staining efficiency of LG against G and P. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and eighty participants were studied under three groups - 60 as healthy controls, 60 with potentially malignant disorders, and 60 with malignant lesions; smears were taken thrice from the buccal mucosa. One smear was fixed with Bio-Fix spray and other two smears were allowed to air dry for 2-3 minutes. Then, the ethyl alcohol-fixed smear was stained with Pap and the two other air-dried smears were stained with G and LG stains. Analysis was done using Friedman test and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test with SPSS Version 15.0. RESULTS: In the normal group, staining of LG was highly significant (P < 0.001). Among potentially malignant lesions, LG was observed to be highly significant (P < 0.001) when compared with G and was not significant when compared with Pap (P = 0.186). In the malignant group, LG was highly significant (P < 0.001). LG was superior with the highest average staining score of (2.018) than Pap and G. CONCLUSION: LG cocktail is a better stain with excellent cytoplasmic and nuclear staining intensity compared to Pap and G stains.

RESUMO

Oral health could be maintained by application of this technology in prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Oral cancer is a debilitating disease, and numerous research activities are being pursued worldwide to combat this deleterious process. Nanotechnology is very diverse field that has revolutionized the industry and is setting new trends in the management of oral cancer. Hence, we performed a PubMed search on nanotechnology in oral cancer and found 211 articles related to this search. We have reviewed the reported literature to the best of our abilities and summarized the various aspects of nanotechnology, its role in diagnosis - nanodiagnostics and treatment of oral cancer - nanotherapeutics in this article.
