RESUMO
Data of 84 Hartmann operations have shown it to be the operation of choice not only in urgent but also in planned surgery. It is indicated to patients with severe intercurrent diseases and in cases with great local regional spread of the tumor process. To prevent the development of infection in the pelvic fat a careful suture of the rectum stump and wide drain of the presacral space is necessary.

An all-round study established thyroid dysfunction in 51 reproductive, climacteric and menopausal patients with primary T2-3 NO-1 MO cancer of the breast. Hypothyroidism is attributed to functional derangement of the thyroid and disorder development in peripheral metabolism.

The functional condition of the pituitary-adrenal system was studied in 94 patients with disseminated breast cancer. A decreased excretion of 17--OCS's with urine and an increased cortisol level in blood were observed. This was interpreted as relative (extra-adrenal) failure of pituitary-adrenal function in breast cancer patients. Measures of long-term therapy (adaptogens, vitamins and hepatotropic preparations) are recommended.

The breast cancer morbidity among the population of the city of Leningrad has been analysed. It was shown that there is a tendency to the increased number of breast cancer patients. In this respect attention is given to the prophylactic measures, accomplished in Leningrad City oncological dyspensary. As proved statistically, the pathogenetic therapy of mastopathy is a factor contributing to less risk of malignant transformation. For the statistical analysis the authors used the data of 132 breast cancer patients; previously operated upon for local fibroadenomatosis, and the data of 259 control patients. It was found that among the patients with fibroadenomatosis who subsequently developed cancer of the mammary gland, the proportion of untreated patients was 2.8 times as much as in the control group.

Statistical investigations of morphological structure in 2 groups of patients with localized forms of fibroadenomatosis (93 observations) have been carried out. Histological findings of the morphological picture have been received both within the localized fibroadenomatosis sites and beyond them. The character of the distribution of morphological forms has been shown to remain the same in all the sites of a single and in both mammary glands. Close relationship between the morphological picture in the localized sites and in so called "normal" sites of the mammae has been established. This proves the expedience of radical sectoral resection and the necessity of longlasting conservative treatment.

Under study was the content of blood protein bound iodine (SBI) in 102 patients with mastopathy, aged from 18 to 44 years. The law of distribution of these indices was formulated, and the mean values were determined for 6 ethiopathogenetic groups of patients. The mean value for the whole selected group prior to the treatment (3.95 +/- 0.14 mKg%) was significantly less than in the control group of healthy females (5.81 +/- 0.21 mKg%). The asthenic-depressive syndrome and other factors were shown to influence the changes in the thyroid activity in some patients with mastopathy.
