RESUMO

Nitrogen is one of the essential nutrients for the production of agricultural crops, participating in a complex interaction among soil, plant and the atmosphere. Therefore, its monitoring is important both economically and environmentally. The aim of this work was to estimate the leaf nitrogen contents in sugarcane from hyperspectral reflectance data during different vegetative stages of the plant. The assessments were performed from an experiment designed in completely randomized blocks, with increasing nitrogen doses (0, 60, 120 and 180 kg ha-1). The acquisition of the spectral data occurred at different stages of crop development (67, 99, 144, 164, 200, 228, 255 and 313 days after cutting; DAC). In the laboratory, the hyperspectral responses of the leaves and the Leaf Nitrogen Contents (LNC) were obtained. The hyperspectral data and the LNC values were used to generate spectral models employing the technique of Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR) Analysis, also with the calculation of the spectral bands of greatest relevance, by the Variable Importance in Projection (VIP). In general, the increase in LNC promoted a smaller reflectance in all wavelengths in the visible (400-680 nm). Acceptable models were obtained (R2 > 0.70 and RMSE <1.41 g kg-1), the most robust of which were those generated from spectra in the visible (400-680 nm) and red-edge (680-750 nm), with values of R2 > 0.81 and RMSE <1.24 g kg-1. An independent validation, leave-one-date-out cross validation (LOOCV), was performed using data from other collections, which confirmed the robustness and the possibility of LNC prediction in new data sets, derived, for instance, from samplings subsequent to the period of study.

RESUMO

Sambaqui (shellmound) societies are among the most intriguing archaeological phenomena in pre-colonial South America, extending from approximately 8,000 to 1,000 years before present (yr BP) across 3,000 km on the Atlantic coast. However, little is known about their connection to early Holocene hunter-gatherers, how this may have contributed to different historical pathways and the processes through which late Holocene ceramists came to rule the coast shortly before European contact. To contribute to our understanding of the population history of indigenous societies on the eastern coast of South America, we produced genome-wide data from 34 ancient individuals as early as 10,000 yr BP from four different regions in Brazil. Early Holocene hunter-gatherers were found to lack shared genetic drift among themselves and with later populations from eastern South America, suggesting that they derived from a common radiation and did not contribute substantially to later coastal groups. Our analyses show genetic heterogeneity among contemporaneous Sambaqui groups from the southeastern and southern Brazilian coast, contrary to the similarity expressed in the archaeological record. The complex history of intercultural contact between inland horticulturists and coastal populations becomes genetically evident during the final horizon of Sambaqui societies, from around 2,200 yr BP, corroborating evidence of cultural change.

RESUMO

The quantitative assessment of the carbonate system represents one of the biggest challenges toward the "Sustainable Development Goals" defined by the United Nations in 2015. In this sense, the present study investigated the Spatio-temporal dynamics of the carbonate system and the effects of the El Niño and La Niña phenomena over the Cabo Frio upwelling area. The physical characterization of the site was carried out through data on wind speed and sea surface temperature. Water samples were also collected during the oceanographic cruise onboard the Diadorim R/V (Research Vessel). From these samples, the parameters of absolute and practical salinity, density, pH, total alkalinity, carbonate, calcite, aragonite, bicarbonate dissolved inorganic carbon, carbon dioxide, partial pressure of carbon, calcium, and total boron were obtained. The highest average concentration of bicarbonate in S1 (2018 µmol/kg) seems to contribute to the dissolved inorganic carbon values (2203 µmol/kg). The values of calcite saturation state, aragonite saturation state, and carbonate were higher on the surface of each station (calcite saturation state = 4.80-5.48; aragonite saturation state = 3.10-3.63, and carbonate = 189-216 µmol/kg). The mean values of pH were similar in the day/night samples (7.96/7.97). The whole carbonate system was calculated through thermodynamic modeling with the Marine Chemical Analysis (AQM) program loaded with the results of the following parameters: temperature, salinity, total alkalinity, and pH parameters. This manuscript presents original data on the carbonate system and the "acidification" process influenced by the Cabo Frio upwelling, which directly depends on the El Niño and La Niña phenomena oscillations in the sea surface temperature.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Brazil is one of the world's largest pesticide consumers, but information on pesticide poisoning among workers is scarce. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate acute pesticide poisoning among tobacco growers, according to different criteria. METHODS: This was a two-step cross-sectional study with 492 pesticide applicators. It used a 25 question pesticide-related symptoms (PRS) questionnaire and medical diagnosis for comparison with toxicological assessment. Associations were evaluated using Poisson regression. RESULTS: 10.6% reported two or more PRS, while 8.1% reported three or more. Furthermore, 12.2% received a medical diagnosis of poisoning. According to toxicologists, possible cases accounted for 14.2% and probable cases for 4.3%. PRS increased during the period of greater exposure. Those exposed to dithiocarbamates, sulfentrazone, pyrethroids, fipronil and iprodione exhibited more PRS. The number of exposure types, multi-chemical exposure, clothes wet with pesticides and spillage on the body/clothes were associated with acute poisonings. All criteria showed sensitivity greater than 79% for probable cases but only greater than 70% for medical diagnosis when compared to possible cases, presenting substantial Kappa agreement. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of acute pesticide poisoning is much higher than officially recorded. Trained physicians can screen for pesticide poisoning. It is necessary to improve workers' education to reduce pesticide use and exposure to them.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To test whether two different materials used for occlusal splints would reduce the stress to the temporomandibular joint discs. METHODS: Geometric data from a young-adult male patient were obtained from computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. 3D biomodels and the finite element analyses were performed using specific software. RESULTS: The mandibular model presented the highest bone stress areas in the mandibular rami and insertion of the temporalis muscles. Regardless the material, the highest stress in the occlusal splints was located in the second molar regions on the occlusal splint surface and in the opposing mandibular second molars. Stress reduction was only observed in the internal surface of the occlusal splints embracing the maxillary teeth. No differences between occlusal splints were found in the stress intensity and distribution in either left or right TMJ discs, being concentrated more in the anterior portion of the disc. DISCUSSION: Hard acrylic OS should be preferred over soft EVA OS in the majority of cases, soft OS only for temporary use. Thinner OS (2-3 mm anterior thickness) should be preferred over thick ones (3-4 mm) in order to keep the stress concentrations in the center of the TMJ discs. Lighter contacts over heavier contacts should be preferred in the second molar OS contact surface area to prevent stress concentrations and fractures. Maxillary occlusal splints should be chosen if the teeth or implant are in the maxilla, and vice-versa.

RESUMO

This study applied spectroradiometry techniques with hyperspectral data to identify the correlations between sugarcane leaf reflectance and the contents of Nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), Sulfur (S), Calcium (Ca) and Magnesium (Mg). During the harvests 2019/20 and 2020/21, sugarcane was introduced to nutritional stress by the application of limestone doses. Liming was applied in a fractional way and, at the end of five years, the amounts corresponded to 0, 9, 15 and 21 t ha-1 of dolomitic limestone. The leaf hyperspectral reflectance data and the state of nutrients in the exponential growth phase of the culture were registered. The wavelengths correlated with N, P, K, S, Ca and Mg were identified using the Spearman's correlation analysis. The test of similarity (ANOSIM) and the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) were applied to evaluate data variability, as well as the Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR) for the prediction of the nutritional contents. The order of the degree of correlation in the region of visible was: P > K > N > Ca > S > Mg and for the region of the near infrared: P > K > Ca > N > S > Mg. P presented peaks with high correlations in the wavelengths 706-717 nm (-0.78) and 522-543 nm (-0.76). The values of the PLSR registered the best spectral responses in the region of VIS and red-edge, regions that are more sensitive to the deficiency of sulfur, potassium and phosphorus.

This manuscript presents an inventory of the carbonate system from the main water masses comprising the marine current system on Brazil's northeast coast (South Atlantic Ocean). For this purpose, four transects were conducted with an approximate length of 357 km (each one) through the platform and continental slope of the Sergipe-Alagoas sedimentary basin. Water samples were then collected in vertical profiles measuring from 5 to 1,799 meters depth, totaling 34 stations. Total alkalinity, calcium, and total boron were obtained analytically from these samples and by relationships with salinity. Speciation and concentration of the carbonate system were obtained by means of thermodynamic modeling. The results revealed that the empirical models used to calculate the concentrations of TA, calcium and total boron showed relevant variation when compared to the analytical values (TA: 5.0-6.5%; Ca: 0.4-4.8%; BT: 7.0-18.9%). However, the speciation and concentration of the carbonate system (CA, DIC, [Formula: see text], CO2(aq), ΩCalc, and ΩArag) obtained from the empirical values of TA, calcium and total boron did not differ significantly from those obtained analytically (0.0-6.1%). On the other hand, the parameters of pH, [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], CO2(aq), ρCO2, ΩCalc, and ΩArag varied significantly within the different water masses (p < 0.05). This study supports and encourages acidification monitoring projects in the South Atlantic Ocean, based on modeling the carbonate system parameters generated in real-time.

RESUMO

Yellow fever (YF) is a pansystemic disease caused by the yellow fever virus (YFV), the prototype species of the family Flaviviridae and genus Flavivirus, and has a highly complex host-pathogen relationship, in which endothelial dysfunction reflects viral disease tropism. In this study, the in situ endothelial response was evaluated. Liver tissue samples were collected from 21 YFV-positive patients who died due to the disease and five flavivirus-negative controls who died of other causes and whose hepatic parenchyma architecture was preserved. Immunohistochemical analysis of tissues in the hepatic parenchyma of YF cases showed significantly higher expression of E-selectin, P-selectin, intercellular adhesion molecule-1, vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, and very late antigen-4 in YFV-positive cases than in flavivirus-negative controls. These results indicate that endothelium activation aggravates the inflammatory response by inducing the expression of adhesion molecules that contribute to the rolling, recruitment, migration, and construction of the inflammatory process in the hepatic parenchyma in fatal YF cases.

RESUMO

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To assess the general subjective sleep quality in individuals with and without TMD, and its distribution among the TMD diagnostic groups. METHODS: A systematic review search was performed in Pubmed/MEDLINE, Embase, LILACS, Web of Science, SciELO, CINAHL and Cochrane Central as well as in the grey literature. Observational studies published since 1992 which used either the DC/TMD or RDC/TMD for TMD diagnosis and either the PSQI, SAQ or ESS questionnaires for sleep assessment were included. Articles selected for meta-analysis underwent quality, heterogeneity and publication bias evaluation. RESULTS: A total of 1071 articles were found by online search, and 10 articles were added manually. For full-text reading, 138 papers were selected. Thirty-six articles were included in the final review, and 19 in the meta-analysis (PSQI only). Subjective sleep quality was shown to be associated with all RDC/TMD or DC/TMD Axis I diagnostic groups: muscle disorders, arthralgia/osteoarthritis/osteoarthrosis and disk displacements; with the highest association in the first two groups, and the lowest in the last one. A 4.45 times increased odds ratio of TMD prevalence was found for individuals who presented poor subjective sleep quality. CONCLUSION: Subjective sleep quality should be considered in the management of TMD.

RESUMO

Evidence supports the link between air pollution and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Therefore, exposure to indoor pollution (IDP) is likely to be associated with the disease. The poor, refugees, and migrant workers who live in feeble conditions are the most vulnerable. The pandemic has caused many people to remain indoors, especially at-risk individuals (e.g., the elderly, diabetics, obese, cardiac, and chronic lung disease patients). Home isolation may be an underlying factor to other health problems among these populations if the place where they are socially isolating is not adequately ventilated. Therefore, understanding the consequences of the relationship between IDP and the COVID-19 pandemic is essential.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: We report a case of a patient with a rare clinical condition: cystic angiomatosis presenting as pleural effusion and multiple bone lesions mimicking a metastatic malignant neoplasia. With only about 50 such cases published in the literature, it is important to report the clinical presentation and proposed treatment and to share information about the clinical evolution in these patients. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 45-year-old white man who presented to our hospital with ventilator-dependent pain. Chest tomography detected pleural effusion and multiple osteolytic bone lesions. Oncologic investigation for metastatic malignant neoplasia was started after exclusion of an infectious process. Imaging examinations revealed diffuse osteolytic lesions as well as cystic lesions of the spleen, with discrete glycolytic hypermetabolism visualized by positron emission tomography. After negative results were obtained by investigation of the primary tumor site and a bone biopsy, a final diagnosis of cystic angiomatosis was made. CONCLUSIONS: In view of the fact that cystic angiomatosis is a heterogeneous disorder of unpredictable prognosis and uncertain treatment, it is necessary to disseminate new cases so that further studies may be undertaken to obtain further physiopathological findings and an effective treatment.

RESUMO

Two experimental cells with household solid waste and healthcare solid waste were monitored in order to evaluate the pollution potential, and its toxicity effects corresponding to the chemical substances present in the leachates generated, correlating the physico-chemical composition with the ecotoxicity results (organisms Aliivibrio fischeri and Danio rerio). From the statistical evaluation of the physico-chemical analysis results, leachate generated in the household solid waste cell presented greater or equal values than to the healthcare solid waste cell, except for the turbidity parameter. The ecotoxicity results showed the same behaviour as that obtained with the physico-chemical analysis. A significant positive correlation was verified between chemical oxygen demand, alkalinity and ammonia nitrogen parameters with the leachate toxicity. This study concluded that healthcare solid waste presented less or equal polluting potential compared with household solid waste, and the co-disposal can be considered a viable alternative in sanitary landfills.

RESUMO

Retroperitoneal liposarcoma is a rare type of cancer. Relapse after surgery is frequent, and relapsing tumors tend to be more aggressive and less differentiated each episode, worsening the prognosis. This report describes the case of a 42-year-old female diagnosed with retroperitoneal liposarcoma after complete tumor resection. At the 3-month follow-up, another expansive lipomatous mass in the retroperitoneal area almost the same size as the previous one was detected. The patient underwent a new surgery, followed by first-line treatment with a gemcitabine- and docetaxel-based regimen for 8 cycles. Finally, the patient achieved complete tumor remission confirmed by CT after the end of the treatment proposed. Although recurrence is a well-known characteristic of this neoplasia, no other case with such a vast expansion of a new tumor shortly after complete resection was found in the literature.

RESUMO

Resistance of maize inbred lines to major leaf diseases should be characterized for the development of new hybrids in breeding programs. Thus, this study aimed to assess the severity of leaf diseases in maize inbredlines with different kernel hardnessand two sowingseasons. We assessed four inbred lines and one check hybrid with dent kernels and four inbred lines and a check hybrid with flint kernels. Treatments were conducted in two sowing seasons, one in October, and another in December 2013. The symptoms of gray leaf spot (Cercospora zeae-maydis), northern leaf blight (Exserohilum turcicum), and white leaf spot (a complex of Phaeosphaeria maydis and Pantoea ananatis) were assessed every 10 days from flowering. The area under the disease progress curve was also calculated. Severity level of the diseases was higher in inbred lines when compared to the check hybrds (AG8041 PRO and P30R50YH), regardless of kernel hardness. Dent-kernel inbred lines showed a higher severity of northern leaf blight symptoms when compared to flint-kernelones. It is worth mentioning that disease severity increased as sowing was delayed.(AU)

Background: Focal Nodular Hyperplasia (FNH) in the liver is a solid lesion characterized by spontaneous benign nonneoplastic hepatocellular proliferation that occurs in animals and humans. The clinical course of FNH is usually asymptomatic in animals and humans; and its diagnosis is often an incidental finding during surgery, necropsy/autopsy, or imaging procedures for unrelated symptoms. Despite the lack of clinical significance or malignant transformation potential, FNH is an important differential diagnosis of hepatocellular adenoma, well-differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma, nodular regenerative hyperplasia and metastatic disease. FNH is particularly uncommon in wild marsupials and other wild animals and this study aimed to describe for the first time the occurrence of hepatic FNH in a free-ranging marsupial.Case: During the fieldwork activities for investigation of liver diseases in wild animals, a well-demarcated, non-encapsulated focal nodule measuring 2.0 x 1.5 x 2.0 cm was observed on the parietal surface of right liver lobe of a wildlife adult female opossum (Didelphis marsupialis) from Anajás City, Marajó Island, Brazil. The nodule had a smooth, tan-to-yellow cut surface with small reddish areas devoid of visible fibrous bands and/or scars. The opossum was in good body condition and no other gross lesions were observed. Liver samples were collected, fixed in 10% buffered formalin and routinely processed for histopathological analysis. Tissue samples were embedded in paraffin, cut in 5 µm sections, stained with hematoxylin and eosin (HE), Massons trichrome (MT), reticulin and Perls stains and the slides were evaluated under light microscope. Liver tissue samples were also snap frozen in liquid nitrogen and submitted to DNA and RNA extraction for molecular screening for Orthohepadnavirus and Hepacivirus (homologous to hepatitis B and C viruses respectively) by previously described nested PCR and RT-PCR techniques.[...](AU)

RESUMO

Commercial hybrids are viable to generate base populations for obtaining new superior lines. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the performance and stability of maize topcross hybrids and select superior partly inbred lines. We evaluated 155 topcross hybrids of partly inbred lines crossed with an elite inbred line (tester) together with 14 commercial hybrids (2B688, AG7088, AS1575, DKB390, GNZ2005, GNZ8132, GNZ9501, GNZ9505, GNZ9548, GNZ9623, P30F35, P30F53, P30R50, and Penta) in Guarapuava-PR, Candói-PR, Guarda-Mor-MG, and Paracatu-MG (Brazil). The assessed variable was grain yield (GY), in kg ha-1, at 13% moisture, being the plant stand corrected by covariance method. A variance analysis was carried out, testing both stability and adaptability. There were significant differences for all sources of variation. By considering the GY means of the genotypes in each environment, Candói (10,985 kg ha-1) and Paracatu (10,917 kg ha-1) were in the first group, while Guarda-Mor (10,448 kg ha-1) was allocated in the intermediate group, and Guarapuava (10,159 kg ha-1) formed the group of lower GY means. None of the topcrosses stood out in any of the four environments, which may be related to the differences in climate and altitude between environments. Despite of this fact, lines 9, 13, 39, 40, 60, 93, 108, 179, 184, 189, 194, 211, 212, 213, 216, 217, 235, 243, 245, and 253 excelled as promising and should follow the process of inbreeding, in addition to the topcrosses 87, 144, 179, and 211, which also stood out for stability and adaptability in these environments.(AU)

Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) is an acute febrile rash, usually induced by drugs, which recently has been linked to spider bite. We report a case of a male patient, 48 years old, with an erythematous rash accompanied by fever and small non-follicular pustules. He reported previous pain in the buttock with the onset of a necrotic plaque. The lesion was compatible with spider bite of the genus Loxosceles. According to the EuroSCAR group instrument, the patient scored +10 indicating definite diagnosis of AGEP. As the patient had a compatible lesion and had no other triggers of AGEP, in an Loxosceles endemic area, the AGEP would be associated with spider bite, as described in other publications.
