RESUMO

The São Luís Island, Maranhão State, is an ecotonal region, a mix of humid forest, cocais forest, dune vegetation, restingas and mangroves. Unlike the interior of the State, their coastal areas have a gap in knowledge of the Passifloraceae. Here, through field expeditions and herbaria visit, we provide taxonomic treatment, identification key and comments on the Passifloraceae of the São Luís Island. Ten species were recorded: Passiflora auriculata Kunth, P. edulis Sims, P. foetida L., P. glandulosa Cav., P. laurifolia L., P. misera Kunth, P. nitida Kunth, P. picturata Ker Gawl., P. subrotunda Mast., and P. vespertilio L. Passiflora picturata and P. misera were recorded for the first time on São Luís Island.

Spectral quality is an important factor for in vitro development of explants in a bioreactor system. Based on the need to optimize micropropagation for E. grandis × E. urophylla clones, the aim of the study was to assess the spectral quality of in vitro multiplication in temporary immersion bioreactor (TIB). The tissue used to generate the explants (i.e., the nodal segment with 1 cm of length and two axillary bud without leaves) was previously in vitro established and multiplied, it derived from ministumps of E. grandis × E. urophylla clone grown in a semi-hydroponic system. The spectral quality of in vitro multiplication was assessed through five light sources (i.e., fluorescent lamp, red, green, blue, and yellow cellophane). Morphological and anatomical features of tissues grown in TIB were evaluated at 90 days. Based on the results, yellow and blue spectral qualities were the most suitable to be adopted for in vitro multiplication of E. grandis × E. urophylla, since they enabled lesser hyperhydricity, favors high number of shoots per explant and shoot length, as well as thicker mesophyll and spongy parenchyma; arise as an alternative for large-scale production of eucalypts clonal plants.

RESUMO

Abstract Dipteryx odorata (Aubl.) Willd. and Taralea oppositifolia Aubl., Fabaceae: Dipterygeae, are two Amazonian species of great economic and pharmacological potential. The anatomy of these species, however, remains poorly studied. The aim of this work was to inventory leaf anatomical characteristics of D. odorata and T. oppositifolia and to locate and identify secretory structures and determine the main classes of metabolites they store. Vegetative branches were collected in Parque Ecológico de Gunma, Belém, state of Pará, Brazil. Some of the branches were destined for herborization while the remainder was submitted to standard protocols for anatomical analysis and histochemical tests. Both species were found to possess an unstratified epidermis, with D. odorata being amphistomatic and T. oppositifolia being hypostomatic, and dorsiventral mesophyll with spongy parenchyma and wide cellular space. The two species were also found to possess idioblasts and secretory cavities that produce a heterogeneous exudate consisting of polysaccharides, lipids, alkaloids and phenolic compounds. The species presented differences in leaf anatomy and chemical composition of the secretory structures, which may be useful in their differentiation.

RESUMO

Introduction Chronic cough may represent a diagnostic challenge. Chronic parasitism of upper airways is an unusual cause. Objective To describe a case of human syngamosis as an uncommon cause of dry cough. Case Report An endoscopic exam performed in a woman suffering of chronic cough revealed a Y-shaped worm in the larynx identified as Syngamus laryngeus. Discussion This nematode parasitizes the upper respiratory tract of many animals including humans. The diagnosis is performed by the examination of the worm expelled by cough or by endoscopy. Endoscopic exam is easy to perform and is essential in the diagnosis of causes of chronic cough, even uncommon entities. Removal is the only efficient treatment.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the influence of different water concentrations in the solvents of self-etching primers on microtensile bond strength (LTBS) of an experimental adhesive system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five experimental self-etching primers with 0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 (wt%) water as solvent were formulated. An experimental adhesive resin (AD-50) was also synthesized to create one experimental self-etching adhesive system. Clearfil SE Bond (CSEB) was used as the commercial reference. Sixty bovine incisors were randomly separated into 6 groups. Buccal enamel was removed to expose the superficial coronal dentin; this surface was polished wet to create a standardized smear layer. After rinsing, water was removed, leaving the surface visibly dried. The dentin surfaces were etched with primer and air dried, adhesive resin was applied and photoactivated, then the composite resin restoration was placed. After storage for 24 h, the specimens were sectioned with a cooled diamond saw at low speed. Microtensile bond strength was measured and data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA/Tukey's test (alpha = 0.05). RESULTS: ANOVA showed that primer composition was a significant factor for bond strength. There was no significant difference in bond strengths between the primers with a water concentration of 40% (53.9 +/- 12.7 MPa), 20% (51.1 +/- 11.5 MPa, and 10% (47.5 +/- 11.4 MPa), and CSEB (50.7 +/- 9.8 MPa). The groups with 5% (38.6 +/- 12.9 MPa) and 0% (31.5 +/- 7.5 MPa) water presented similar bond strengths amongst themselves but were statistically significantly lower than that of the other groups. CONCLUSION: The water concentration in the primer solvent exercises a significant influence on the bond strength of this experimental self-etching adhesive system.
