Chemical composition and nutrient digestibility of insect meal for broiler.

To determine the chemical composition and digestibility of insect meal for poultry made from the larvae of Tenebrio molitor (TL) and nymphs of Gryllus assimilis (GAN) a total excreta collection test was carried out, substituting 20% of the reference diet with each type of meal. The meals presented 6074 and 5975 kcal/Kg of gross energy, with 49.34% and 52.66% protein for TL and GAN respectively. The most nutrient digestibility was less than 65%, except for energy and ether-extract digestibility in the meal from Tenebrio molitor larvae, which were over 70%. The meals under analysis can be used as a source of nutrients in poultry diets.

The seed coat of Phaseolus vulgaris interferes with the development of the cowpea weevil [Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae)].

We have confirmed here that the seeds of the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris, L.) do not support development of the bruchid Callosobruchus maculatus (F.), a pest of cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp] seeds. Analysis of the testa (seed coat) of the bean suggested that neither thickness nor the levels of compounds such as tannic acid, tannins, or HCN are important for the resistance. On the other hand, we have found that phaseolin (vicilin-like 7S storage globulin), detected in the testa by Western blotting and N-terminal amino acid sequencing, is detrimental to the development of C. maculatus. As for the case of other previously studied legume seeds (Canavalia ensiformis and Phaseolus lunatus) we suggest that the presence of vicilin-like proteins in the testa of P. vulgaris may have had a significant role in the evolutionary adaptation of bruchids to the seeds of leguminous plants.

Perfil sócio-demográfico e avaliação funcional de idosos atendidos por uma equipe de saúde da família na periferia de Goiânia, Goiás / Socio-demographic profile and functional status of elderly attended by a family team of the periphery of Goiânia, Goiás

Investigar o perfil sócio-demográfico e a capacidade funcional dos idosos atendidos por uma equipe de saúde da família. Durante novembro de 2001 a maio de 2002, todos os indivíduos (N=107) com 60 anos ou mais foram entrevistados e avaliados através das Escalas de Barthel e Lawton para dependência nas atividades de vida diária (AVDs) e instrumentais de vida diária (AIVDs). A maioria dos idosos tinha entre 60 a 69 anos, residia com familiares e possuía rendimento inferior a um salário mínimo. Praticamente a metade dos idosos não sabia ler e escrever. Do total de idosos, 40,9 por cento eram dependentes para as AVDs e 58 por cento para as AIVDs. A análise dos fatores de risco revelou que a idade, acuidade visual diminuída, doenças associadas, depressão e equilíbrio e mobilidade prejudicados foram estatisticamente associados à dependência dos idosos (P<0,05). As escalas Barthel e de Lawton são de baixo custo e de fácil execução pelos profissionais de saúde e, oferecem subsídios para o planejamento de ações de saúde efetivas. Os resultados subsidiarão as ações de saúde junto à comunidade de idosos atendida pela equipe de saúde.
