RESUMO

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, jails were advised to reduce facility census, particularly the growing population of those with medical/behavioral health vulnerabilities that increased susceptibility to adverse outcomes. Although jail census decreased across the nation in the initial days to months following pandemic declaration, there are minimal data regarding the health status of those who remained in jail. The current investigation aspired to describe jail census trends before/since the onset of COVID-19 and offer snapshots of temporal changes and context for prevalence estimates of medical/behavioral health conditions in jail detainees from 2019 to 2023. Using a serial cross-sectional design, prescription information for individuals residing in 18 jails across the United States on June 30 of each respective year was extracted and categorized using MediSpan's ontological system to determine prevalence estimates of prescribed agents/products. Although data evidenced an initial 31% census reduction (followed by gradual return to prepandemic rates), prescribing patterns for all major therapeutic drug classes steadily increased, with 10% more individuals prescribed at least one agent in 2023 than 2019. The largest increases were observed for behavioral health agents (e.g., 32.4% of the sample was prescribed psychotropic agents in 2023 compared with 25.7% in 2019). We provide considerations for future investigations.

RESUMO

There is ongoing debate about the methods that evaluators should use to assess the adaptive functioning of an individual in an Atkins claim, including the appropriateness of using self-report measures and extent to which adaptive functioning measures are valid for persons with a history of violent offending. This study examined whether offenders' self-report adaptive functioning scores tended to decrease as their level of psychopathic traits increased. Eighty-five male felony probationers completed the self-report version of the Adaptive Behavior Assessment System - II (ABAS-II: Harrison & Oakland, 2003), the Psychopathic Personality Inventory - Revised (PPI-R: Lilienfeld & Widows, 2005), and a brief intelligence screening measure. ABAS-II composite scores were negatively correlated with PPI-R Self-Centered Impulsivity and Coldheartedness scores, but positively correlated with Fearless Dominance scores. These relationships appeared to be due, in part, to over-reporting symptoms of impairment across measures, suggesting that scores on self-report adaptive functioning measures may be especially susceptible to feigning.

RESUMO

We examined the ability of scores from the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI; Morey, 1991) to predict postrelease (M = 4.90 years follow-up) arrests in a sample of 1,412 sex offenders. We focused on scores from 4 PAI measures conceptually relevant to offending, including the Antisocial Features (ANT), Aggression (AGG), and Dominance (DOM) scales, as well as the Violence Potential Index (VPI). Scores from several PAI measures demonstrated small- to medium-sized effects in predicting violent nonsexual recidivism, nonviolent recidivism, and sex offender registry violations, with the AGG scale being the strongest (d = 0.50 for violent nonsexual recidivism, d = 0.55 for sex offender registry violations) and most consistent predictor of recidivism.
