RESUMO

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the level of depression and stress among the first-year students at Suranaree University of Technology (SUT) and to compare the level of depression and stress among the samples, classified by demographic factors, including gender, domicile, and problem. This research has been approved by the SUT's Research Ethics Committee. The study period was between July and August 2018. The online, self-report questionnaire was used as a research instrument to collect data from the sample of SUT first-year students. The total number of first-year students at SUT was 3,552 and the response rate was 65.15%. The major findings revealed that 7.0% and 51.1% of them were suffering from depression, and pathological stress, respectively. In addition, the prevalence of depression and pathological stress was higher in female samples than in other gender groups. The findings would suggest that related activities should be organized to promote students' awareness of their suffering and self-control in order to prevent further depression and pathological stress.

Purpose: A high level of stress among medical students is perceived as stress caused by strenuous medical programs and medical school is an extremely stressful environment, to begin with. For this reason, identifying stressors facing medical students is expected to enhance medical school lecturers' understanding, leading to a provision of assistance for adequate supervision. The purposes of this study were to investigate stress levels in daily life and the electroencephalogram (EEG) characteristics during daily life and pre-examination period of 2nd-year medical students at Suranaree University of Technology (SUT), Thailand, and to compare the EEG characteristics between these two periods. Methods: Medical Student Stressor Questionnaire (MSSQ) was used as a research instrument to collect data from sixty medical students. After that, EEG was administered in two periods for these studies (in daily life (baseline) and pre-examination 1 week). Paired t-test was used for analyzing the difference in the EEG characteristics in the 2 periods. Results: The results indicated that the stress levels among medical students were mild (3.33%), moderate (53.33%), and high (43.33%). Academic Related Stressor (ARS) was found to be the main cause of stress among the subjects. All had a beta wave in 2 periods. Conclusion: In conclusion, stress among medical students can alter brain function as measured by EEG. The findings could assist medical schools in better understanding medical students' stress levels and planning how to teach in order to improve student achievement.

Osteoarthritis Knee (OA) is the leading cause of pain and disability. This may affect the patient's quality of life (QoL) and lead to the onset of mental disorders. The aim of this study was 1) To find the correlation between the severity of OA, depression, and QoL. 2) To compare the severity of OA knee and QoL between urban and rural areas. 199 patients were diagnosed with OA. All patients had self-assessment with questionnaires in terms of 1) demographic data, 2) the knee severity by using Oxford Knee Score, 3) Depression screening by using Patient Health Questionnaire, and 4) World Health Organization Quality of Life Brief-Thai. The results revealed that OA knee patients had excellent (no abnormal symptoms) and good (mild symptoms) levels of severity were 34.2% and 32.2%, respectively. They also had a good level of QoL. The correlation between residential area and other variables were age group (p < 0.01), severity of osteoarthritis (p < 0.01), and depression (p < 0.05). The severity of OA knee and QoL in the mental health aspect was a significant difference in patients in each age group. (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05, respectively). Depression and QoL were not correlated. The conclusion was patients had less severity of osteoarthritis, good QoL, and no anxiety or depression. Residential areas had no impact on QoL but healthcare providers should explain the treatment plan. The next study should focus on the long term of the patient's QoL.

PURPOSE: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is a global health crisis that has impacted daily life due to the policies created to contain the outbreak. Recent studies showed that medical students, a high-stress population, experienced deteriorated mental well-being during the pandemic. The aim of the present study was to assess stress and the need for support among Thai medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic, as a multicenter study. METHODS: The present study was a cross-sectional questionnaire-based study which collected data from second through sixth year medical students. Data was collected during the pandemic from multiple medical schools spanning all six regions of Thailand. Questionnaires included: demographic data; the Thai version of the Perceived Stress Scale-10 (T-PSS-10) assessing stress level and the sources of stress; and the received supports from medical schools, the satisfaction with the supports, and the further necessary needs. RESULTS: There were 1,395 medical students who responded to the questionnaires. Mean T-PSS-10 score was 17.8. Most of the sources of stress were related to the changing of teaching and evaluation system. Students residing in larger medical schools were significantly more satisfied with received support and tended to gain greater support than those in medium and small sized schools. Stress-relieving activities arrangement was considered the most sought after additional support by students. CONCLUSION: Medical student stress levels were higher during the pandemic compared to pre-pandemic levels. Stress relieving activities, availability and access to mental health resources, and other strategies to reduce stress among medical students are urgently needed.
