RESUMO

The long-term success of dental implants depends not only upon implant osseointegration, but also on the surrounding soft tissue health and profile. An ideal emergence profile contributes to the aesthetics of an implant restoration. It maintains long-term implant health by preventing potential food accumulation and forming a barrier against bacterial ingress. This article describes a method for obtaining an impression of implants that will capture the custom guided peri-implant soft tissue contours accurately, thus contributing to a final restoration with favorable aesthetics. We also describe a technique for reducing excess cement in a cement retained implant crown, thereby contributing to the health of the peri-implant tissues.

RESUMO

AIM: The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare, among various implant systems, the influence of primary stability and the bone density and soft tissue biotype of the patient on the amount of peri-implant crestal bone loss after 1 year using radiography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Included in this retrospective study were patient records of 3583 implant placements utilized from an online dental information archiving software (DIAS). Clinical and radiographic assessments were conducted concurrently with implant placement (baseline) and 1 year post surgery. Statistical analysis was done to examine the mean marginal bone loss significance in the three different implant systems groups (group I: Straumann Roxolid SLAc-tive, group II: Nobel Biocare CC, group III: Straumann SLA), different primary stability values, different bone density. and soft tissue biotype at the time of implant placement. RESULTS: A significant difference was observed in the crestal bone loss with different implant systems used. Group I showed significantly lesser amounts of crestal bone loss when compared to groups II and III. However, the differences in the bone density, ISQ values, and the soft tissue biotype did not exhibit a statistically significant difference in the amount of crestal bone loss. CONCLUSION: Significant MBL preservation for implants with Straumann SLActive when compared to Nobel Biocare CC and Straumann SLA implants. No significant changes were observed with respect to primary stability, bone density, and soft tissue thickness and no correlation among early crestal bone loss and IT, ISQ at surgery, and ISQ at reopening was observed. Straumann Roxolid SLActive implants showed less crestal bone loss probably owing to its hydrophilic surface modification. However, more studies need to be done to evaluate the same.

RESUMO

To assess up to date patient and doctor perceived costs of dental implant surgery among the Indian population as there is a lack of information regarding patients' awareness of dental implants. Two online questionnaire forms were sent over the internet to the Indian population and the Indian dentists and dental students regarding the knowledge, attitude and perception regarding the dental implant surgery for rehabilitation of a single missing tooth. Statistical analysis was then carried out using SPSS software version 23.0. Thirty-eight percent (P < 0.05) of the participants questioned the thought that implants require the same care as fixed prostheses, and thought it was a better option due to a major percent expecting an additional payment > 10,000 indian rupees. The expectations that patients have for an implant-supported set are high in contrast to their willingness to make additional payments. There are still misconceptions regarding costs, and these must be resolved individually in practice.

RESUMO

The aim of this review was to perform a comprehensive overview of evidence pertaining to the influence of various surface modifications on the surface roughness, bone implant contact, and the success and complication rates of the implants. Modified sandblasted, large-grit, acid-etched (SLA) implants (SLActive implants) have a higher implant stability quotient compared with conventional SLA implants. Also, when compared between the implant surfaces from various manufacturers, Biomet 3i Nanotite implants were shown to have a relatively higher implant stability quotient compared to Straumann implants as well as the Biomet Osseotite implants. Only one study reports the insertion torque values as obtained by the various implant surfaces, with the findings being statistically similar for all the types, and a higher mean value for Biomet 3i Nanotite implants. Among SLA and SLActive surfaces, the latter was found to have a lower marginal bone loss, and among Astratech implants, the marginal bone loss levels were similar for Osseospeed and Tioblast surfaces. When Osseospeed, TiUnite and SLActive surfaces were compared, Osseospeed was found to have the minimum bone loss while TiUnite was found to have the highest. The bone implant contact percentages are similar and satisfactory for most of the implant surface modifications that are available currently. Upon assessing the recent literature on the survival rates for implants with various surface modifications, it was found that among Nobel Biocare implants, the survival rate was higher for TiUnite implants, compared with the turned surfaces. Surprisingly, among the Straumann implant surfaces, the survival rates were found to be higher for the SLA implants when compared to the modified SLA implants. Only one of the included studies evaluated the survival rate for Astratech implant surfaces and found a 100% survival rate for both the Osseospeed and Tioblast surface implants. Therefore, major advancements have been made in developing novel surfaces of dental implants. The numerous innovations set the stage for rehabilitating patients with high success and predictable survival rates even in challenging conditions.

RESUMO

Aim: The aim of this study was to assess surface roughness and marginal adaptation of Stereolithographic versus Digital Light Processed three-dimensional (3D) printed provisional resins. Materials and Methods: A 3-unit fixed partial denture (FPD) preparation was done on ideal model irrespective to 44-46. The Model was scanned and a 3-unit FPD was designed using 3-shape software. The STL file was transferred to two different 3D printers - Sprintray digital light processing (DLP) and Formlabs stereolithography (SLA). Eight samples were printed per group (total of 16 samples) using C and B temporary tooth-colored resin and cured according to the manufacturer's instructions. Marginal adaptation was checked for six surfaces per tooth for all the samples using a stereomicroscope. Surface roughness was also calculated for four samples from each group before and after polishing (pumice slurry + rouge and cotton buff) using a contact profilometer. Results: The mean maximum marginal gap overall, was seen for the DLP group on the mesiobuccal surface of the first premolar, i.e., 178.8 ± 8.35 µm, while the minimal marginal gap was seen for the SLA group on the mesiolingual surface of first molar - 32.5 ± 7.07 µm. Furthermore, all the DLP samples showed a statistically significant higher mean marginal gap as compared to SLA samples (P < 0.005). All the samples showed surface roughness within the acceptable range. There was a statistically significant difference noted in Rz (roughness depth) before and after polishing (P < 0.05). Conclusion: 3D printed temporary resin FPD via SLA showed a much better marginal adaptation (49.6 µm mean marginal gap for 46 and 106.8 µm for 44) as compared to those printed via DLP (101.8 µm mean marginal gap for 46 and 157.5 µm for 44). All the samples showed an acceptable surface roughness. Clinical Relevance: 3D printed temporaries have shown good marginal fit and adaptation and are a viable choice in patients where temporaries has to be given for long term before a final prosthesis can be fabricated (especially for full mouth rehabilitations).

RESUMO

Implant abutment connection has proven to have a significant impact on the success of the prosthetic rehabilitation for an implant-supported restoration. This connection not only provides the base on which the restoration is supported but also maintains the integrity of the hard and the soft tissues surrounding the implant. A wide range of implants and their implant abutments are now widely available in the market. Such a wide range would undoubtedly put the clinician in a quandary when it comes to selecting an acceptable abutment, one that is scientifically based and also has a high clinical rate of success. As a result, this study is a straightforward attempt to assess the knowledge of the dental specialists practicing implantology on the areas of implant abutment connections as well as platform switching. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge on various implant abutment and platform switching among various dental specialists practicing implantology. An online multiple-choice questionnaire based survey was circulated amongst a total of 100 dental specialists with questions assessing their knowledge about implant-abutment connections, platform switching and its significance. Although the degree of information about implant-abutment connection and platform switching appears to be appropriate among various dental specialists practicing implantology, there is a dearth of understanding regarding the mechanical, biological and technical considerations. With the advent of various implant manufacturer and their production of implants as well as their components, the clinicians are undoubtedly put in a quandary when it comes to selecting an acceptable abutment, one that is scientifically based and also has a high clinical rate of success. Therefore, more light must be thrown not only on the surgical aspects of implant dentistry, but also on the prosthetic rehabilitation and its components, in order to ensure clinical success in terms of restoring a patient's function as well as aesthetic.

RESUMO

The aim of the study was to carry out a structured review of studies that dealt with types of implant abutment connections, the concept of platform switching and its influence on hard and soft oral tissues. Electronic search was conducted over PubMed, Google Scholar, Medline, Embase to find articles dealing with Implant abutment connection and platform switching. We came across a total of 248 articles, which were filtered to a cumulative 19 articles after cross matching with predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Most of the available literature gravitates in favor of an internal connection with the incorporation of platform switching to attain satisfactory hard and soft tissue outcomes.

RESUMO

The present invention relates to dental compositions that include a phosphorescent material, more particularly, adding phosphorescent material to waxes that used in dentistry. The aim of the study is to develop a wax that has innate phosphorescent properties. Three groups of samples were taken in which the phosphorescent material was added. Three groups were later compared for their phosphorescent property in the material. All the samples in the initial molten state were poured into a mold made of silicone impression material and allowed to set. The material was placed in a dark room, and visual examination was done to compare the materials. From the samples obtained, paraffin wax showed more phosphorescent property than beeswax. The least phosphorescent property was seen in marginal wax. It can be concluded from this study that paraffin wax showed the most phosphorescent property.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Intraoral scanner (IOS) is a medical device used for capturing direct optical impressions and composed of a handheld camera (hardware), a computer and software. Digital impressions by intraoral scanning have become an increasingly popular alternative to conventional impressions. The aim of this systematic review is to assess the studies regarding the various available technologies for IOS and evaluate the most accurate IOS system for cases with multiple implants and identify the factors that can influence its accuracy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive electronic search was done in online databases, 'Pubmed', 'Google Scholar' and 'Cochrane' based on pre-determined eligibility criteria. In-vitro studies, In-vivo studies and Randomized controlled trials assessing the accuracy of intra-oral scanner technology were selected after thorough screening. The search strategy covered all studies published until February 2019 and yielded a total of 11 articles out of which 8 studies were determined to fulfil the inclusion criteria and were selected for this review. Data extraction from the included studies was conducted by the primary author and reviewed by the second author. RESULTS: The information collected included sample size and population, study design, intervention, scanning methods, comparisons and outcome measures. 5 out of 8 included studies compared the distance deviation of the acquired scans from the true values while the remaining 3 studies gave trueness and precision values as the outcome variables. A forest plot on scanner precision displayed slightly higher precision levels in the TRIOS scanner compared to the other intraoral scanners. CONCLUSION: Despite the limitations this study, it can be concluded that active wavefront sampling is more accurate than the other intraoral scanning technology employed by commercial scanners.

RESUMO

Denture marking techniques play a vital role in establishing personal identification in suitable clinical and forensic situations. The denture marking techniques are categorized broadly into additive and ablative methods. Additive methods involve embedding or impregnation of markers for establishing personal identity. Ablative methods involve partial removal of the denture surface thereby providing a marking for identification. Engraving and etching methods are the commonly used ablative methods. Ablative methods can be of contact and noncontact subtypes. Laser micro-etching is a precise noncontact ablative denture marking technique that could be used for prostheses-guided personal identification.
