RESUMO

PURPOSE: The ophthalmic examination of patients with diagnosed systemic sarcoidosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 33 patients (17 women, 16 men), aged 22-60 years had ophthalmic examination (visual acuity, anterior and posterior segment evaluation, applanation tonometry). In 8 patients repeated examination was performed (duration of observation: 2-31 months). RESULTS: In 27 patients no characteristic features of ocular sarcoidosis were found. In 6 persons (18.2%) variety of ocular lesions was recognized (nodular infiltrations of the eyelids, chronic uveal inflammation, signs of anterior and posterior uveitis in the past, optic disc oedema). In 3 cases ocular lesions preceded the signs of systemic sarcoidosis. This emphasizes the importance of the routine ophthalmic examination of patients with suspected or proven sarcoidosis.

RESUMO

The case of 26-year old male patient with typical clinical intermediate uveitis (vitritis, periphlebitis) with accompanying leucopenia, bradycardia and demyelination focal areas in brain of unknown etiology is presented. The asymptomatic periphlebitis was also found in the eyes of his twin brothers (30 years old) and sister (20 years old).

RESUMO

The authors present 2 cases (women aged 33 and 51) of APMPE with typical ophthalmoscopic and angiographic picture. The disease began with acute decrease of visual acuity. During 6 months follow-up there was no progression of the changes.

RESUMO

A case of a 46-year-old, generally healthy man, with sudden deterioration of visual acuity associated with macular haemorrhagies is presented. Angioid streaks were diagnosed basing on the ophthalmoscopical and angiographic picture of the fundus.

RESUMO

Investigations were performed in a group of 16 patients after cataract extraction with implantation of an intraocular artificial lens. The authors evaluated the condition of the iris on the basis of a biomicroscopic examination and fluorescein angiography up to 1 year after surgery.

RESUMO

Thirty six cases of toxoplasma chorioretinitis with fundus scars were studied. Subretinal neovascularization occurred in 7 cases out of 36. Angiographically, the new vessels were located either directly on the border of scar (5 cases) or at distance with feeder vessels arising from the scar. The identification of subretinal new vessels is easy during the early phase of angiography. At the late phase, the leakage from the membrane is usually difficult to distinguish from the staining of the scar. Leakage from these new vessels can cause a sudden decrease of visual acuity (from 0.4 to central scotoma) that is not associated with inflammatory signs. The natural history of these juxtafoveolar new vessels allows a useful final acuity (0.18 after a follow-up period from 5 to 42 months). The visual outcome of toxoplasmosis choroiditis without subretinal new vessels is usually around 0.5. In 3 eyes photocoagulation of new vessels was performed with improvement in the mean final acuity (0.3). In our cases the occurrence of subretinal new vessels happened only when the healing process was achieved, from 1 to 26 years after the acute chorioretinitis.
