RESUMO

Aim: This study investigated the effect of an insect antimicrobial protein, apolipophorin III (apoLp-III), against two newly isolated, identified and characterized clinical strains of Staphylococcus spp. Materials & methods: Both strains were identified by 16S rRNA sequencing and metabolic and phenotypic profiling. The antibacterial activity of apoLp-III was tested using a colony counting assay. ApoLp-III interaction with bacterial cell surface was analyzed by Fourier transform IR spectroscopy. Results:Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus capitis were identified. ApoLp-III exerted a dose-dependent bactericidal effect on the tested strains. The differences in the Staphylococcus spp. surface components may contribute to the various sensitivities of these strains to apoLp-III. Conclusion: ApoLp-III may provide a baseline for development of antibacterial preparations against Staphylococcus spp. involved in dermatological problems.

RESUMO

The evaluation of inflammatory response in drug-induced maculopapular eruption was the aim of the study. Plasma concentrations of interleukin-6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP) and alpha-2 macroglobulin (alpha-2 MG) were measured in 40 patients with maculopapular eruptions using the immunoenzymatic ELISA method in acute stage of disease and after clearing of skin lesions due to effective therapy. In the acute stage of the disease mean plasma levels of the examined proteins were highly significantly elevated (p < 0.001) in comparison with healthy control. Regression of the clinical symptoms was connected with the deep decrease of protein concentrations in the peripheral blood. After treatment the plasma levels of IL-6 and alpha-2 MG were lowered towards the control values (p > 0.05), but CRP despite its deep decrease was still highly significantly elevated (p < 0.001) in comparison with control. The results of this study indicate that in drug-induced maculopapular eruptions the acute phase response can be initiated and that the observed increased activity of the examined proteins lasts longer than the clinical symptoms of the disease.

RESUMO

The wound healing is a complex process that can be divided into inflammatory reaction, proliferation and maturation of newly formed tissue. The inflammatory phase involves vascular and cellular events and is best characterized by edema, erythema and marked increase of blood supply. During proliferative phase there is formation of the epithelium with concomitant grow of granulation tissue and new blood vessels (angiogenesis). Angiogenesis seems to be strictly coordinated and regulated by multiple grow factors and cytokines released at the wound site. Once the tissue within the wound is formed the maturation phase begins. The synthesis of collagens and other extracellular matrix components increase tensile strength of the wound. Thus, the final result of the process of healing is the formation of tissue able to replace the normal, uninjured skin.
