[Statistical analysis of 1,430 determinations of 24-hour urinary estriol clinical conclusions]. / Analyse statistique de 1430 dosages de l'oestriol urinaire de 24 heures. Conclusions cliniques.

The authors used statistical methods to interpret 1,430 values of 24-hour urinary estriol. This determination is valuable in the last three months of pregnancy if values lower than 10 mg/24-hour are obtained at the 40th week, the tests must be repeated and additional examinations should be made to determine the condition of the fetus. This test is invaluable in the surveillance of cases of toxaemia of pregnancy, threatened premature births, severe forms of Rhesus incompatibility, and in cases of fetal death. This study showed that the prognosis is grave when reduced or flattened oscillations of the trace of fetal cardiac frequency are associated with very low levels of estriol.

[The interest of the plasma estrone + estradiol/estriol relationship in the surveillance of threatened premature birth, late pre-eclampsia and prolonged pregnancy]. / Intérêt du rapport oestrone + oestradiol/oestriol plasmatique dans la surveillance des menaces d'accouchement prématuré des gestoses tardives et des grossesses prolongées.

Although fully aware of the limits of their method, the authors consider the study of estrone + estradiol/estriol relationship, all these hormones being assayed in the mother's plasma, as a valuable aid in the difficult surveillance of threatened premature birth, late gestosis and prolonged pregnancy. Indeed, when the value of the relationship shows to be below I, the threatened premature delivery has nearly always a favourable course toward its resolution. In late gestosis, the rate of the relationship satisfactorily correlates with the gestosis index of Rippmann and Goecke, thus permitting to establish true prognosis. Finally, in prolonged pregnancy a relationship below I nearly always indicates good fetal condition.

The authors have attempted to devise a simple technique based in exclusively chemical methods to assay plasma estriol. The results obtained have shown the lack of fiability of such a method, in spite of fairly good correlation with urine estriol levels. Only methods utilizing labelled estrogen or radiomyological techniques can yield fiable results in the assay of plasma estriol.
