RESUMO

Breast cancer is the most prevalent malignancy among women. Conservative and operative treatment methods are associated with a risk of side effects pertaining to the shoulder complex. The surgery complications including chronic pain, upper limb and chest lymphedema, range of motion limitations, and motor control deficiencies may lead to upper limb function impairment and affect the quality of life negatively. Twenty-three women were examined in the tested group and twenty-two women in the control group. The motor control was assessed with dissociation tests as defined by Comerford and Mottram. In order to assess patient-perceived upper limb disability, the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire was used. The test of glenohumeral (GH) abduction control in frontal plane and in scapular plane and medial rotation control outcomes were found to be statistically significant. It pertains to both: Comparison between groups and analysis within the tested group-body sides comparison. The DASH questionnaire results analysis indicates that there was a higher degree of subjectively perceived disability of upper limb in the tested group. Surgical interventions in the breast cancer treatment and other medical procedures affect the level of motor control and perceived disability of upper limb negatively in this group of patients. Movement faults are statistically more prevalent in the tested group. Movement faults are more prevalent on the operated side in the tested group.

RESUMO

(1) Background: Due to the pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, rehabilitation centres have become less available for neurological patients. This is the result of efforts to physically distance society, to try to slow the spread of the pathogen. Health care facilities were mainly restricted to urgent cases, while most physiotherapy treatments, mainly for patients with chronic conditions, were suspended. Some countries have seen a reduction in acute stroke hospital admissions of from 50% to 80%. One solution to the above problem is the use of telerehabilitation in the home environment as an alternative to inpatient rehabilitation. (2) Aim of the study: The purpose of this review is to analyse the benefits and limitations of teletherapy in relation to the functional condition of post-stroke patients. (3) Methods: Selected publications from 2019 to 2021 on the telerehabilitation of stroke patients were reviewed. The review was based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) checklist. (4) Results: Studies have proven that teletherapy significantly improves the functional condition of post-stroke patients, resulting in improved quality of life and faster return to independence (while maintaining maximum possible precautions related to the SARS-CoV-2 virus pandemic). (5) Conclusions: Analysis of the study results showed comparable effectiveness of rehabilitation in the tele system to inpatient therapy. However, it should be emphasised that patients undergoing telerehabilitation must meet strict conditions to be eligible for this type of treatment program. However, the strength of the evidence itself supporting the effectiveness of this method ranks low due to the limited number of randomised control trials (RCT), small number of participants, and heterogeneous trials.

RESUMO

We developed a simple method of analyzing the strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) content of intact eggshell samples in support of a broader study of how dietary Sr uptake impacts waterfowl eggshell quality. We used wavelength dispersive - x-ray fluorescence spectrometry (WD-XRF) to analyze eggshell pieces ranging in size from ∼6-mm2 fragments to intact half-shells. We verified this approach on a subset of reference shells by subjecting the same region and volume of shell material from which x-ray signals were measured to analysis by inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). An analysis of the sources of analytical uncertainty yielded total internal error estimates of ±0.3 and 5% relative for Ca and Sr, respectively, on the basis of which the chemistry of intact shell material analyzed by WD-XRF in this study is compared. The total external errors associated with the WD-XRF results of this study in relation to certified reference material (National Institute of Standards and Technology [NIST] 1400 [a bone ash]) are ±9 and 13.5% relative for Ca and Sr, respectfully (95% CL). Our results demonstrate this method is acceptably accurate and precise for many wildlife management applications. WD-XRF analysis is a quick and inexpensive alternative to traditional methods for determining eggshell Sr and Ca that require acid digestion, allowing for generation of larger datasets that might otherwise be cost-prohibitive, while preserving sample material intact.

RESUMO

The purpose of the paper is a functional assessment of post-mastectomy patients who underwent latissimus dorsi breast reconstruction (LDBR), and of healthy women, through an analysis of selected muscle function parameters, including motor control assessment. Twenty participants were included in the study (ten LDBR-procedure individuals and ten healthy controls). The research consisted of a DASH (The Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand) questionnaire assessment, shoulder area static assessment, shoulder mobility assessment, latissimus dorsi flexibility assessment and shoulder motor control assessment. LDBR-procedure individuals-when compared to healthy controls-exhibited a decrease in physical aspects of quality of life, shoulder area postural alterations, limitations in shoulder mobility and decrease in shoulder motor control. LDBR procedure may have an influence on limiting shoulder active mobility, as well as on decrease of shoulder motor and postural control. Standard functional assessment diversified on motor control assessment of post-mastectomy patients qualified for the LDBR procedure seems to be necessary.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) is one of the most common neoplasms in children, that is. 3,000 new cases are diagnosed in the USA each year. The assessment of the quality of life (QoL) by the patient is the important indicator of the effects of treatment by the means of physical, psychical and social functioning. AIM: The aim of the study was to evaluate the QoL of children treated for ALL and the stress levels of their parents. Additionally, the impact of the most common symptoms on perceived QoL was analysed. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy-four patients with ALL (mean age 9.03) were enrolled in the study. The questionnaire of Paediatric Quality of Life (PedsQL) and the medical records as the source of the socio-clinical data were applied in this study. RESULTS: In QoL assessment, the social functioning reached the highest score (67.57 ± 21.33), and physical functioning - the lowest score (51.1 ± 25.59). The analysis of the symptoms showed that the most intensive were stress (7.19 ± 2.71), fatigue and weakness (5.19 ± 2.76). In Spearman's rank correlation analysis the depressed mood, fatigue and weakness were significant negative predictors influencing QoL in all the domains of PedsQoL. In the linear regression analysis only the depressed mood was the significant independent determinant of the decreased QoL in the majority of the domains of PedsQoL, respectively: the general QoL (ß = -0.314; p = 0.002); psychosocial functioning (ß = -3.44; p < 0.01); role functioning (ß = -3.18; p = 0.004); social functioning (ß = -3.5; p = 0.007) and emotional functioning (ß = -3.012; p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: Quality of life of children with ALL is decreased and of the lowest value in the range of physical health. The factors negatively influencing the QoL are depressed mood, fatigue and weakness. The significant independent determinant of the decreased QoL is children's depressed mood.
