RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of acrylic full removable dentures on the perception of four primary tastes (sweet, sour, salty, and bitter), as well as to determine if there is a correlation between changes in body mass index (BMI) and taste perception. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 60 patients who wore acrylic removable dentures and 60 controls were included in the study as a convenient sample. Sixteen solutions for basic tastes were prepared, and the patients were asked to identify the taste of each solution from the lowest concentration. Anthropometric measures, such as height and weight, were measured and recorded in an MS-Excel sheet. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 23. RESULTS: The results showed that patients with complete removable dentures had lower taste scores for sourness (P < 0.001) and sweetness (P < 0.001) compared to the control group. However, there was no significant difference in salt taste scores (P = 0.218) and bitterness (P = 0.002) between the two groups. Additionally, the study found a correlation between lower BMI values and higher taste scores among denture-wearing patients, indicating an inverse relationship between total taste scores and BMI. CONCLUSIONS: The study suggests that geriatric patients with complete dentures have reduced taste sensations compared to those without dentures which can have a negative impact on their nutritional status. Therefore, it is crucial to provide adequate nutritional support and dietary counseling for geriatric patients based on health policy to maintain their overall health and well-being.

RESUMO

Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) has immunomodulatory and immunosuppressive properties and is used in many rheumatological conditions like systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, and Sjogren's syndrome. It is usually a widely used and well-tolerated DMARD (Disease Modifying Anti Rheumatic Drugs). Its most feared toxicities include retinopathy and, rarely, cardiomyopathy. Among its other reported side effects is drug-induced phospholipidosis. Here, we report two cases of HCQ-induced phospholipidosis based on renal biopsy electron microscopy. HCQ-induced phospholipidosis, although uncommon, must be considered as one of the differentials in a patient with persistent proteinuria.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The present study examined the morphology and morphometric parameters of the pyramidalis muscle (PM) in detail with their potential applicability in making midline infra-umbilical incisions and biomechanics of the linea alba. METHODS: PM was examined in 51 formalin-fixed cadavers (36 males and 15 females), and based on the mode of insertion or the level of apex, the formation or shape of the muscle was classified into nine types (Mori's classification). RESULTS: Bilateral PM was more prevalent (39.21%) than unilateral (1.96%) (p = 0.001). All the cases showed side symmetry except one. Mori's type 7 (right PM is higher apex and the left PM with elongated origin) was the most common form. The mean length of PM in males and females was 4.51 ± 0.14 and 3.33 ± 0.12 cm on the right and 4.51 ± 0.11 and 3.26 ± 0.16 cm on the left side. The mean width of right-sided PMs in males and females was 1.90 ± 0.17 and 1.58 ± 0.13 cm and left-sided 1.88 ± 0.14 and 1.55 ± 0.38 cm. The mean of pyramidalis-pubo-umbilical index (PPI) in males and females was 32.82 ± 1.65 and 27.50 ± 1.08, respectively. The mean insertion angle was 24.56 ± 3.07 on right side and 23 ± 2.03 on the left side (p = 0.03). Male predominance existed on right- and left-sided PM length (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001), width (p = 0.001) and PPI (p = 0.001). The strong positive correlation (r = 0.83) between length and width indicates a symmetrical muscle augmentation in the two dimensions. CONCLUSION: PM is an inconsistent anatomical structure with persistent morphology. The level and angle of insertion into the linea are crucial in the biomechanics of linea alba. PPI, determining the termination level would be useful to surgeons making midline infra-umbilical incisions.

RESUMO

Introduction: Iron deficiency anemia is a public health problem globally attributing to high incidences of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity. Iron and folic acid supplementation (IFAS) is essential and provided free of cost by the public health sectors, however, a systematic review shows that the national-level adherence to oral Iron-Folic Acid Supplementation (IFAS) is less than half in pregnant women, and the significant obstacles to non-adherence are fear of side effects and forgetfulness. This trial was designed to mitigate the side effects and tackle forgetfulness with telephonic intervention. The objectives were to investigate the effectiveness of the telephonic intervention on oral IFAS adherence and hemoglobin and the reasons for non-adherence to oral IFAS, to find out the proportion of anemia in the study population, and to assess the effectiveness of the intervention on maternal and neonatal outcomes. Methods: Hospital-based open-label multi-centric parallel-group randomized controlled trial, used block randomization and allocated treatment in a 1:1 ratio recruited 286 anemic pregnant women between 14 and 24 weeks of gestation with hemoglobin level < 11 g/dl having smartphones at a secondary hospital and a tertiary hospital in Eastern India. The experimental group received telephonic intervention for one month via structured text reminders, WhatsApp audio messages, and phone calls. The standard course of treatment was given to the control group. Results: 286 women (n1 =143, n2 =143) were randomized, 36 had attrition leaving 250 for analysis (n1 =123, n2 =127), the experimental group experienced a 44.9 % and the control group 13.8 % increase in adherence (P < 0.001). The leading reasons for non-adherence were forgetfulness (24 %), nausea and vomiting (23.2 %), and constipation (18.8 %). Hemoglobin level increased by 0.8 g/dl (P < 0.001) in the experimental group and 0.2 g/dl (P < 0.807) in the control group. Conclusion: In addition to improving adherence to oral IFAS, telephonic intervention mitigates side effects and enhances hemoglobin in anemic pregnant women. The increase in adherence was threefold in the experimental group compared to a marginal rise in the control group. This study recommends the implementation of a telephonic intervention to promote adherence to oral IFAS among anemic pregnant women.

RESUMO

Background: Birth pain affects women at a physical and psychological level. Pain is subjective, and perception will vary among individuals depending on their health status, pain tolerance, and psychological state. Labor pain can drastically affect the birth process and delivery outcomes if not managed well, ranging from poor maternal satisfaction and impaired maternal-newborn bonding to prolonged labor and fetal distress. Since pharmacological pain relief methods harm the fetus, non-pharmacological pain relief methods are gaining popularity among laboring women and healthcare professionals. Objectives: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of audio-visual therapy on labor pain and maternal anxiety. Methods: A randomized, controlled, open-label, single-center trial was conducted among 76 primigravida women with no obstetrical complications during the active phase of labor (4-8 cm cervical dilatation). The participants were randomly assigned to an experimental group receiving 50 min of virtual reality intervention or a control group receiving standard care using a computer-generated random sequence. The data related to pain and anxiety were collected using the personal information form, anxiety assessment scale for pregnant women in labor, present behavioral intensity scale, numerical pain rating scale, and post-delivery birth satisfaction checklist. Results: Groups were homogenous in terms of demographic and obstetric variables. The virtual reality intervention reduced the experimental group's reported pain intensity and anxiety score. However, no statistically significant difference was noted in maternal vital signs and labor and neonatal outcomes between the groups. Conclusion: The virtual reality intervention reduced labor pain intensity and anxiety among laboring women compared to standard care.

RESUMO

Background: Early initiation of breastfeeding (EIBF) within 1 h of birth is crucial in preventing newborn deaths and plays a vital role in early infant nutrition. Promoting and supporting breastfeeding is an integral part of midwifery. The objective of the study was to improve the EIBF rate in neonates born through a Cesarean Section (CS) from 0% to 50% within six months through a quality improvement (QI) process and to assess the maternal experience of EIBF in operation theatre (OT). Methods: Six Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles were conducted to test the change ideas proposed by the team members for a month to improve EIBF. Participants of the study were the stable term newborns delivered by CS under spinal anesthesia. Results: The EIBF rate improved from 0% to 88% after the sixth PDSA cycle. The effect was sustained for six months. Mothers of 51 neonates (98%) who received EIBF reported that their newborns were breastfed successfully, and it was not physically tiring to feed immediately in the OT. Conclusions: A quality improvement (QI) initiative was able to improve and sustain the improved EIBF rate after CS. Early skin-to-skin contact to be initiated with EIBF for better neonatal outcomes.

RESUMO

Purpose: A recent single-arm pilot study from our group showed a significant decrease in HbA1C in Type-2 diabetes individuals provided with SMS and phone call-based education on glycemic control. Considering the preference of participants to phone call-based education, a randomized control trial (RCT) with parallel design was conducted to determine the impact of phone call-based diabetes educational intervention on the control of hyperglycemia and improvement in the knowledge about diabetes management. Objectives: To determine the impact of phone call-based educational intervention on the control of hyperglycemia and improvement in the knowledge about diabetes management. Methodology: The study was conducted for a period of 12 months on a total of 273 Type-2 diabetic patients (interventional group (n = 135); non-interventional group (n = 138)) who had provided consent to participate. Subjects in the case group received weekly phone calls on diabetes education; whereas the control group received no education. HbA1C investigations were carried out at baseline and at every fourth month until the completion of the study period for the subjects in both the groups. The impact of phone call-based education was measured by comparing HbA1C values as well as by measuring the questionnaire-based knowledge scores on diabetes management. Results: At the end of the study period, there was a significant reduction in HbA1C in 58.8% participants (n = 65) and a manifold (2-5-fold) increase in knowledge on diabetes management among participants in the case group (n = 110). However, no significant difference in HbA1C and knowledge score was observed in participants from the control group (n = 115). Conclusion: Phone call-based diabetes education is a viable option to empower patients for better management of Type-2 diabetes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A non-stress test (NST) is an essential diagnostic test performed during pregnancy to assess fetal well-being. It is a recording of fetal movements besides fetal heart rate, indicating fetal biophysiological well-being. As maternal physiology is altered in various positions, apt positioning during the NST is essential for accurate results while ensuring maternal comfort. This study aims to evaluate the effect of different maternal positions, left lateral and semi-fowler's, on NST reactivity, maternal blood pressure, heart rate, and comfort in pregnant women while performing the NST. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This crossover study evaluated 50 healthy pregnant women between 32 and 40 weeks of gestation with no obstetric complications for the effect of maternal positions on maternofetal physiological parameters and comfort. The NST was performed for 20 min in each position with a washout period of 10 min. The maternofetal physiological parameters were recorded by a calibrated sphygmomanometer and the electrocardiograph interpretations. The maternal comfort was assessed using a maternal comfort rating scale (MCRS) for each position after the NST. Relevant descriptive and inferential statistics are applied to compute the results. RESULTS: Statistically, there was a significant difference in the mean maternal blood pressure and heart rate between the left lateral and semi-fowler's positions at 0 and 20 min (P = 0.001), whereas within the groups, in the same position at 0 and 20 min, no significant difference was found. There was no significant difference in NST reactivity (P = 0.79) in different positions. There was no significant difference between the MCR scores of women in either of the positions (Z = -1.64, df = 49, P = 0.100). CONCLUSION: Semi-fowler's position demonstrated favorable maternal blood pressure and heart rate during the NST in the third trimester of pregnancy, though it was clinically not significant. There was no significant difference in the comfort of women in both positions. Hence, either of the positions can be implemented in practice as an alternative position while performing the NST, based on the women's preference.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: There are limited data on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) growth patterns, particularly in Western cohorts, despite implications for surveillance, prognosis, and treatment. Our study's aim was to quantify tumor doubling time (TDT) and identify correlates associated with indolent and rapid growth. APPROACH AND RESULTS: We performed a retrospective multicenter cohort study of patients with cirrhosis diagnosed with HCC from 2008 to 2017 at six US and European health systems with two or more contrast-enhanced imaging studies performed ≥ 30 days apart prior to HCC treatment. Radiologists independently measured tumors in three dimensions to calculate TDT and specific growth rate (SGR). We used multivariable ordinal logistic regression to identify factors associated with indolent (TDT > 365 days) and rapid (TDT < 90 days) tumor growth. In the primary cohort (n = 242 patients from four centers), median TDT was 229 days (interquartile range [IQR], 89-627) and median SGR was 0.3% per day (IQR, 0.1%-0.8%). Over one-third (38%) of HCCs had indolent growth, 36.8% intermediate growth, and 25.2% rapid growth. In multivariable analysis, indolent growth was associated with larger tumor diameter (odds ratio [OR], 1.15, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.03-1.30) and alpha-fetoprotein < 20 ng/mL (OR, 1.90; 95% CI, 1.12-3.21). Indolent growth was more common in nonviral than viral cirrhosis (50.9% versus 32.1%), particularly in patients with T1 HCC (OR, 3.41; 95% CI, 1.08-10.80). Median TDT (169 days; IQR 74-408 days) and SGR (0.4% per day) were similar in an independent cohort (n = 176 patients from two centers). CONCLUSIONS: In a large Western cohort of patients with HCC, we found heterogeneous tumor growth patterns, with one-fourth exhibiting rapid growth and over one-third having indolent growth. Better understanding different tumor growth patterns may facilitate a precision approach to prognostication and treatment.

RESUMO

Decreased physical activity, increased psychosocial stress and work stress have contributed to the increased prevalence of obesity and Hypertension (HTN). Irrespective of the aetiology, sympathetic over activity has been recognized as the main pathophysiologic mechanism in the genesis of obesity and HTN. Sympathovagal imbalance or dysregulation of autonomic functions owing to sympathetic over activity and vagal withdrawal is reported to be the basis of many clinical disorders. Obesity, hypertension and diabetes mellitus are known to be associated with dysregulation of autonomic functions independently. Heart Rate Variability (HRV) has emerged as a practical, non-invasive tool to quantitatively investigate cardiac autonomic dysregulation. The present study was undertaken to ascertain whether obesity has any effect on further disruption of autonomic functions particularly in hypertensive patients. A total of 96 male and female adults aged between 40-50 years visiting the Primary Health Centre, Yelwala, Mysuru district, India were recruited for this study. They were grouped in to 3 (n=32) as Groups I (Obese hypertensive), II (non-obese hypertensive) and II (non-obese normotensive, control), HRV was determined using the One minute during deep breathing method. Data were presented as Mean ± SD, inferential statistics was by One Way ANOVA and Tukey's Post Hoc test p value <0.005 at α0.05 HRV was significantly decreased in obese hypertensive patients compared to the non-obese hypertensive patients. Our present study supports that obesity and hypertension probably has additive effect in causing autonomic dysregulation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common psychiatric illness in children and adolescents. Till date, the sample sizes in the Indian studies have been relatively small. METHODOLOGY: The present study is a retrospective chart review of a large sample of children and adolescents diagnosed with OCD in a tertiary care center. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to characterize the clinical profile and to evaluate outcome of OCD in children and adolescents. RESULTS: Fear of contamination and washing/cleaning compulsions were the most common presenting symptoms. Most of the patients were male with two-thirds having a comorbid disorder. Major depressive disorder was the most common comorbid disorder. The rates of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, disruptive behavioral disorders, and tic disorders were low when compared to Western studies. One-third of the patients received adequate trial of serotonin reuptake inhibitors and 36% received cognitive behavior therapy. Fifty-four percent of patients had a poor outcome with hospitalization, longer duration of illness, earlier onset of OC symptoms, and family history of OCD being the predictors of poor outcome. CONCLUSION: The present study of a large sample of patients with juvenile OCD highlights the low rate of comorbid disruptive behavior disorders as reported in the earlier Indian studies and a favorable short-term outcome in approximately 56% of the patients.

RESUMO

Ocular Perfusion Pressure (OPP) is the pressure difference between the Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) and theIntra Ocular Pressure (IOP). Decreased OPP could be a major risk factor for glaucoma. The aim is to study the effect ofIsometric exercise on OPP in apparently healthy young adults. Forty apparently healthy young adult volunteers comprising20 males and 20 females in the age group of 18-21 years were selected among MBBS Phase I students of JSS Medicalcollege, JSSU, Mysore. IOP and BP were recorded. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) and OPP were calculated. There was astatistically significant difference (p<0.05) in the mean OPP before and after performing Isometric exercise and betweenmales (50.58±0.72 to 56.85±1.15 mm Hg) and females (49.35 ± 1.66 to 56.71 ± 1.61 mm Hg). Physical activity in the formof Isometric exercise improves ocular blood flow - OPP. Hence regular exercise of prescribed intensity may prove useful forglaucomatous patients which enhance their OPP.

RESUMO

The development of antibiotics has played a significant role in combating the dreaded infectious disease such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, typhoid fever and meningitis in 20th century. However, the improper use of antibiotics led to the development of multidrug resistance (MDR) in microbial flora raising a global public health concern of 21st century. This unforeseen threat demands the development of new drugs and strategies for combating antibiotic resistance shown by many microbial species. Recent developments in nanotechnology to engineer nanoparticles with desired physicochemical properties have been projected as a new line of defense against MDR micro-organism. In this review, we summarized and discussed the recent development demonstrating the potential of nanomaterials to evade the MDR. Nanoparticles have shown effective antimicrobial activity against MDR bacteria, such as Acinetobacter baumanii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, vancomycin resistant enterococci, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and others. Furthermore, new strategies like combination of radiation and drugs with nanoparticle that are being explored to potentiate the effectiveness against MDR bacteria have also been summarized.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to compare the linear dimensional accuracy of die materials before and after disinfection of the impression. Type IV and V conventional dental stone, type IV-resin impregnated and copper-plated die materials were studied. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A stainless-steel master die analogs to a complete veneer crown preparation with three scribed lines (I: vertical, II and III: horizontal) was machined and measurements were made from these scribed reference lines. Impressions were made with monophase addition silicone impression material for each of the specimens. 2% glutaraldehyde was used as a disinfectant. The fabricated dies were measured to the nearest 0.0001 mm. ANOVA and post hoc was carried out using Scheffe multiple comparison test at significance level of 0.05. RESULTS: Type IV resin-impregnated dental stone and copperplated dies approximated the dimensions of the master die. Type IV and V conventional dental stone dies showed greater variation in measurements. Statistically significant differences were observed for type IV resin-impregnated and copper-plated dies in dimension I and III. For dimension II no significant differences were found for dies fabricated from four die materials. A one-way analysis of variance indicated no statistical significant differences among the two groups of dies fabricated from disinfectant treated impressions and those fabricated from nondisinfectant treated impressions. CONCLUSION: Type IV resin-impregnated dental stone and copper-plated dies are dimensionally more accurate than type IV and V conventional dental stone die materials. No significant linear distortion in the dies fabricated from the disinfected impressions was observed.

RESUMO

We have investigated on the potentiation of etoposide (ETP) and temozolomide (TMZ) cytotoxicity in U-87MG glioblastoma and D283 medulloblastoma cell lines by curcumin (CUR) and turmeric force (TF), a nutraceutical formulation of turmeric, with the objective of assessing the potential for their adjuvant use in brain tumor chemotherapy. While U-87MG cell line was generally resistant to TMZ, IC50 values for CUR and TF were 37.33 and 30.75 µg/ml, respectively. TF is the only agent that demonstrated efficacy at the IC90 level. When CUR or TF was combined with ETP and TMZ, increased chemotherapeutic efficiency in the U-87MG cells was observed. TF is highly cytotoxic to D283 Med cell line compared to curcumin with an IC50 value of 1.55 ug/ml. Although both CUR and TF potentiated ETP and TMZ cytotoxicity, TF is more efficient than CUR in both U-87MG and D283 Med cell lines. Treatment of U-87MG cells with the triple combination of TMZ+ETP+TF induced a high percentage of apoptotic cells. Potential mechanisms that may explain evidence of synergy include down regulation of p10 and p53 mRNAs and increase in BAX/Bcl-2 mRNA ratio. These pre-clinical results suggest that TF may be useful as an adjuvant with ETP and TMZ for brain tumor chemotherapy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ovarian hormone withdrawal and a high fructose diet on the development of atherogenic dyslipidemia in rats. Because amla (Indian gooseberry) is known to possess hypolipidemic properties, its preventive effect on the above was also studied. METHODS: Three-month-old female albino rats were either ovariectomized (n = 48) or sham-operated (n = 12). The study was performed in two phases: phase 1 (first 12 wk) and phase 2 (next 6 wk). The sham-operated rats were fed rodent chow in both phases (control). The ovariectomized rats were assigned to four groups: rats fed chow in both phases (O), rats fed a 60% fructose-rich diet in phase 2 alone (O + F), rats administered chow and amla extract in both phases (O + A), and rats administered chow + amla extract in phase 1 and then fed a 60% fructose-rich diet + amla extract in phase 2 (O + F + A). RESULTS: O + F rats developed insulin resistance and had increased triglycerides (TGs) and total cholesterol. O + A and O + F + A groups had significantly lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and higher high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol compared with controls. O + F + A did not develop insulin resistance and had reduced TGs compared with O + F rats. O + A and O + F + A rats showed a tremendous decrease in non-HDL cholesterol and non-HDL cholesterol/HDL cholesterol, TG/HDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol/HDL cholesterol ratios. CONCLUSIONS: Amla decreased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and increased HDL cholesterol in ovariectomized rats fed chow or fructose. In ovariectomized and fructose-fed rats, it prevented insulin resistance aside from subduing the rise in TG. Amla may be explored for its use in preventing dyslipidemia in postmenopausal women.

RESUMO

Stomach contractions are initiated and coordinated by an underlying electrical activity (slow waves), and electrical dysrhythmias accompany motility diseases. Electrical recordings taken directly from the stomach provide the most valuable data, but face technical constraints. Serosal or mucosal electrodes have cables that traverse the abdominal wall, or a natural orifice, causing discomfort and possible infection, and restricting mobility. These problems motivated the development of a wireless system. The bidirectional telemetric system constitutes a front-end transponder, a back-end receiver and a graphical userinter face. The front-end module conditions the analogue signals, then digitizes and loads the data into a radio for transmission. Data receipt at the backend is acknowledged via a transceiver function. The system was validated in a bench-top study, then validated in vivo using serosal electrodes connected simultaneously to a commercial wired system. The front-end module was 35 × 35 × 27 mm3 and weighed 20 g. Bench-top tests demonstrated reliable communication within a distance range of 30 m, power consumption of 13.5 mW, and 124 h operation when utilizing a 560 mAh, 3 V battery. In vivo, slow wave frequencies were recorded identically with the wireless and wired reference systems (2.4 cycles min−1), automated activation time detection was modestly better for the wireless system (5% versus 14% FP rate), and signal amplitudes were modestly higher via the wireless system (462 versus 3 86µV; p<0.001). This telemetric system for slow wave acquisition is reliable, power efficient, readily portable and potentially implantable. The device will enable chronic monitoring and evaluation of slow wave patterns in animals and patients.0967-3334/

RESUMO

The synthesis of three new bis(imidazole)-ligated iron(II) picket fence porphyrin derivatives, [Fe(TpivPP)(1-RIm) 2] 1-RIm = 1-methyl-, 1-ethyl-, or 1-vinylimidazole) are reported. X-ray structure determinations reveal that the steric requirements of the four alpha,alpha,alpha,alpha-o-pivalamidophenyl groups lead to very restricted rotation of the imidazole ligand on the picket side of the porphyrin plane; the crowding leads to an imidazole plane orientation eclipsing an iron-porphyrin nitrogen bond. An unusual feature for these diamagnetic iron(II) species is that all three derivatives have the two axial ligands with a relative perpendicular orientation; the dihedral angles between the two imidazole planes are 77.2 degrees , 62.4 degrees , and 78.5 degrees . All three derivatives have nearly planar porphyrin cores. Mössbauer spectroscopic characterization shows that all three derivatives have quadrupole splitting constants around 1.00 mm/s at 100K.

RESUMO

The presence of cellular somatostatin receptors, particularly of subtype 2, has been reported in a large number of human primary non-neuroendocrine tumours, such as breast and colon cancer. Our aim was to evaluate whether subtype 2 expression may represent a prognostic factor in these tumours, and if the exact determination of its expression might help to identify patients eligible for a new treatment modality based on somatostatin analogues. Large groups of neuroblastomas as well as breast and colon cancers were studied for subtype 2 expression. In the two latter groups the expression of subtype 2 was evaluated both in tumour and in the corresponding normal tissue from the same patient, to correctly evaluate any modification of subtype 2 mRNA expression in cancer. Subtype 2 mRNA expression was measured with accurate quantitative retro transcription-polymerase chain reaction procedures (first, by competitive polymerase chain reaction and then, by real-time assays). When possible, results of mRNA measurement were compared with in vitro (in situ hybridisation and immunohistochemistry) and in vivo (octreoscan) demonstration of subtype 2 expression in the same patients. Our results seem to suggest the hypothesis that subtype 2 may represent a marker of cell differentiation in certain tumours, such as neuroblastoma, and another instance may be represented by breast and colon cancer. Beside this, the question whether subtype 2 may have an active role in inhibiting cancer cell proliferation, stays open.
